They say history's just a product of geography. Nowhere is this more true than in our world of Celestis. A gas giant, our world is made up of a network of floating islands, continents, and rocks that swirl around the Great Storm. The core of the planet, filled with supercooled metals known as "superconductors' that create a stunning amount of magnetism radiating from the center naturally threw up asteroids containing high amounts of magnetic metal into a sort of half-orbit. The winds of the world push around continents holding anywhere between a mere fifty to a hundred million people across the vast expanses of the sky.

Life on Celestis is a harsh competition of resources, as oil is virtually nonexistent and coal and charcoal are hardly cheap. Food and arable land is limited, except for on the big and populous continents. It is in this brutal world that separate societies started to develop.

The Great Kingdoms follow feudal traditions and are ignorant, religious, and go to war with eachother. They live off aristocracy and a structured social order and are stagnant and economically weak, but very populous, formed on the big continents where warfare between Knights is the norm.

The Trade cities are less populous and smaller cites that floated around fast and in regular patterns through the map of storms that covered the world. Through their fast drift, they were able to build big and diverse trade connections. However, in recent years slavery has reduced their incentive to industrialize, and they've declined from rule by vicious and selfish oligarchs.

The Industrial Baronies are smoke-filled, oligarchical business republics which formed from former trade cities that were falling behind in the competition. Taking a new policy of finding a leg up, they started mass producing and experimenting with industry and creative ways to generate power. This led to a rapid industrialization and advance of technology. Today, they work to stifle all trade city competition and keep Kingdoms weak.

The Forlorn are societies without any advantages. Diverse in nature, they're either vassals to the great lords, isolated, or trade colonies.

Finally, there are stretches of the world which are just unknown... mysterious areas that have drifted, may or may not contain people, and are not explored either due to their extraordinarily fast drift or otherwise.

The most developed areas of the world are around the Great Storm, much like the Eye of Jupiter, a storm that generates a great circular wind that keeps most of the landmasses in circular rotation around it.

Taking advantage of the superconductor magnetism of the world, great sky fleets have formed and carry equipment from place to place.

However, in recent years, the metal and heavily armed ships of the industrial cities have allowed them to increasingly monopolize control over trade, increasing competition between them. The development of industry and capitalism was always an extension of the military sport of plunder: and the force with which some floating empires can now plunder others is massive.

Conflict is brewing between two central powers around the Great Storm. Over the past sixty years, the ultra-efficient industrial barons of the Volkarine Union, a series of smaller islands joined together, have conquered four other industrial cities, leaving only one, the greatest Industrial Barony of them all, Aeterna, standing.

But the Aeternans have become decadent and slow in their years. The wealth of the oligarchs multiplies as the common people suffer. Convincing themselves that their ancient city which, unlike the other industrial baronies, has maintained its chivalry and honor, would never fall, they delude themselves into exposing their own weakness.

Down in the Kingdoms, Forlorn areas, and trade cities, however, the recent wars between the industrial cities have been a disaster as a pervasive set of proxy wars with more powerful weapons than ever has killed millions. Entire kingdoms are up in flames and the ancient trade network of the old empires, built on the system of appointing governors of numerous trade outposts to raid for slaves, has been destroyed by Volkarine attacks.

But new secrets are starting to emerge which might permanently once again tip the balance of the world. In many outlying areas, some people are starting to develop special powers, magic, control over nature, the elements, or even physics in small areas. Journeying to the Forlorn, and especially the mysterious and undiscovered areas, has become for many a way to gain and expand powers.

Lemme know if anyone's interested or what yall think and if a ton should be changed. Thanks!

Honestly everything has to have some big conflict so I'n thinking of adding a mage villain on top of the conflict between the main powers. That begs a bigger question: magic yes/no?

Edit: This is our thread

If I had to choose a single word to describe this idea, that would be the one I'd select. I immediately appreciated the amount of time you put into planning out your world and the imagery you provided. It feels big, but not overwhelming. I especially enjoyed the inclusion of class warfare. There's a lot of room in your world for political intrigue and it compliments the psuedo-steampunk vibe and pure romance of playing in an alien world.

As for the concept of magic: you're clearly up to the task of explaining things with a casual nod to science. My honest opinion is that you continue that trend. One of my favorite quotes is:

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

I'd like to see you play with that idea with regards to your magic; I'd like to see you have your cake and eat it, too.

As of now I'd like to throw my hat into the ring. I think this could be a really fun environment to play in. My only concern - and I use the word concern for the lack of a better one - would be how you plan on having a group of people navigate your world. I think it would be best to have us all start together, but that's an issue to be addressed later. And, frankly, that's just me being a busy body.

Cheers, friend. I look forward to this.

Thansk dude and yeah I'm thinking of nixing magic unless we can give it a scientific nod and make it just a few gifted individuals.

Science:

So what if the superconductors of the earth mean that some people with specially constructed nerves could tap into the magnetic energy in the air and make electricity? These specially gifted people (whose powers would leave them or come to them with age, and would be on and off and unpredictable) can grow quite powerful in the areas furthest from the Graet Storm because those areas are of the lowest altitude, with the storm's winds picking up the islands in the center. Just like real brains, magic neurons become stronger with practice.
Societies wouldn't understand this kind of magic and would be scared. There could be an international inquisitions that would scare the living daylights out of mages. Those born with powers are hidden away by their parents.

Big thanks for the mention of a way we could engineer a plot. I'm thinking there are 2 options:

- Leaders of states and random people starting in different places

- A single quest

I think people will want the first more. A way we could get around it is by starting everyone off in one place, say the Aeterna Trade Fair, and for there to be a magical cataclysm (that one of the characters might have started), that triggers a massive crisis and war as sides blame eachother for the deaths of a lot of state leaders on both sides. From there, characters need to make the moral decision of fighting for their lands, going their own way, or getting to the bottom of what happened and reconciling the world.

I lke the powder keg idea as far as the plot goes. Very WWI.

I also really like the way you explain magic by incorporating the inherent magnetism of the floating islands. The first thing that came to mind was that maybe some people are born with a biology that allows them to act as transformers: they are able to ramp up the natural magnetism in order amplify their own natural electrical currents and utilize it at will. The details are of course up to you, boss. But, I see a lot of potential.

Oh yeah that's definitely a good idea to make it partially heritable. There are probable some oppressed families that are jailed up and convince the mages in hiding to stay out of public light

The problem with all these kind of out there RPs is finding players though. I might have to reach out and PM, and write up a much simplified version

Something tells me we'll be fine, boss. ^^
Haha yep spoke too soon

And on that note I was wondering since most of the vast world is open and hasn't been decided yet if anyone wants to request countries it would be a great way of filling them. Just even a couple sentences for the general idea would do if you want characters from a very specific place

I love anything to do with steampunk... And I like your idea. I"m interested in joining.

I am so interested in this. And I'd also like to request a country that is a mix between The Industrial Baronies and The Forlorn. Like a very advance society that is still very focused on traditions and is isolated?

Awesome great to see so much interest I'll open this at night japan time (next morning USA)

I'll put in a country sheet form in the character aps for anyone who wants to make one. This is mainly a character not country RP however

Yeah I'll send you all PMs and link you to it

Really sorry it wasn't up today. I'm rewriting bits that got way too long. I don't want people to have to read like 4 paragraphs just on Aeterna.

I am pretty interested in this! I'm going to check out the thread now!

Do you have a player/character limit for this roleplay?

It's going to be a big adn expansive RP, so not for now but I'll probably cap it at 20: the issue is a lot of people who join RPs don't end up posting so we'll see if we can find replacements if they do, that way the limit doesn't become a straightjacket. Good idea though. To keep everyone active and moving I'll set up RPs to call in and involve people who didn't end up posting in the initial rounds cause I think the problem is they feel left out usually

@ all let me know if any sections in the thread hurt the eyes or have bad grammar
