- st. numen's academy for hostsst. numen's academy was founded centuries ago, when the gods and goddesses from various pantheons began to fade as a result of the people's belief in them deteriorating. as they are immortal and incapable of truly dying, their essence remained while their divine bodies crumbled to dust.
in an attempt to remain remembered, and to continue to have one foot on earth, these various gods and goddesses latched onto other living beings. at first it was random — a last ditch attempt to stay alive while the memories of them were slowly being forgotten. they soon realised, though, that this was the only way for them to continue to exist in the physical world.
over the years they learned from their mistakes, and their system of choosing hosts progressed. some humans were unwilling to act as hosts while others felt privileged and blessed. the gods soon realised, though, that a balance in nature needed to be maintained. just as they continued to exist, so did many of their foes.
evil gods chose hosts as well, and roam the earth in their human disguises while trying to carry out the things they wanted to do when they were still gods.
monsters, though eventually becoming the stuff of myths, continue to exist and cause chaos. they are invisible to the people of earth though, and most things that they do seem to be an accident in the real world. the hosts are the only ones capable of seeing their true forms, and are also the only ones capable of killing them — even if this death is only temporary.
the gods eventually realised that their chosen human hosts were not well equipped to deal with things that they'd been dealing with for years. their bodies, though enhanced by divine energy, were still mortal and therefore vulnerable. they needed to be educated, and they needed to learn how to hone their abilities, and so a school was made.
st. numen's was named after the prophet who initially foresaw what would happen to the gods, and at first, educating the hosts was quite tricky. they didn't have many others to learn from, and the gods were still learning the ropes as well since they could contribute their power, but could not completely take over the human bodies they had chosen.
eventually, after choosing new bodies, the older hosts were able to help the next set of hosts in small ways. this continued for years, and after a lot of learning and trial and error, st. numen's became a large institution.
and you just happen to be among the next batch of hosts.
- important loreTHE SCHOOL
the headmistress of the school, madame saunja, as well as all of the school's teachers, are former hosts. they reside at st. numen's, along with all of the students, for the entire school year.
the school itself is an enormous structure, and situated on a large island in the western part of the north atlantic ocean — a place that many commonly refer to as the bermuda triangle. magic keeps the school hidden from regular mortals, and transport for students to and from the school is always provided. each of the school's four houses has its own dormitory with several rooms that house two people each. the school also has several facilities such as training grounds, different sports grounds, various plantations, and an outdoor dining pavilion.
since the only staff at the school are the teachers, students are typically required to take up an on-campus job for the duration of their time at the academy. this is up to each student, but jobs are first come first serve and are usually chosen upon arrival at the academy. some examples of different jobs are assisting in the library, working in the kitchens, waiting tables, helping with the plantations, or even joining the cleaning staff. there are several other small job opportunities as well, to ensure that each student is employed.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
all hosts are chosen at the age of twenty, during a summer solstice, and they usually serve as hosts for twenty-five years before new ones are chosen again. though they act as hosts for that long, they only attend st. numen's for three of those. hosts are also selected based on countries. the gods choose to stay in a country for at least three selections before choosing to go to another country to settle. before every fourth selection, the hosts gather to decide where to shift next. the current set of hosts all based out of the united states of america and are part of the second selection.
the gods can consider several things before choosing their next human host. sometimes they might decide to stick to a particular bloodline, choosing various members of the same family and continuing that trend with the next generation as well. such students are commonly referred to as legacy students.
gods and goddesses may also be random in their selection. if they find a person whose interests, personality, or opinions align with their own, it might be enough to be selected as a host.
of course, some people aren't thrilled with being chosen, but once a decision has been made and a god chooses their new host, the change cannot be reversed unless absolutely necessary.
THE CHANGES
once a person has been selected as a host, they will experience some notable changes. some may be prepared for it if they are legacies, while others may be caught by surprise. either way, all hosts are briefed about the situation after the switch has been made.
hosts are then invited to st. numen's so that they may learn how to adjust to their new lifestyle. the only exceptions are those that are chosen as hosts to the gods that are deemed evil (titans from greek mythology, apophis from egyptian mythology, etc.). they are not extended invitations to the school, nor are the hosts necessarily chosen at the age of twenty.
once chosen, hosts develop slightly enhanced senses, and they are each gifted with one or two special abilities that represent their patron god or goddess. some abilities may be stronger than others, but everyone is still technically human, and therefore vulnerable. they can just withstand a little bit more (physically) than most mortals can. hosts are also capable of mentally communicating with their patron god or goddess.
when the gods choose a new body, their former hosts lose all these enhancements, and some may be asked to return to st. numen's to help educate the next set of hosts.
