A Skull on the Shelf
Never truly dead
"Huh. Sounds...confusing," Elam replied, still scanning Aiko with one eye. "I guess I'll have to see for myself."
An image of Sid flashed over his eyes and Elam shuddered instinctively, taking his eyes off Aiko for a brief moment and sliding slightly farther down in his seat. "That is, if I survive Sid's remedial lessons. Yesterday was all psychological torture, but by the end of today I can't help but get the feeling that I'll be little more than a stain on his boot." Sid certainly seemed like the enthusiastic educator he claimed to be, but Elam couldn't help but shy away from the blue-skinned zombie.
A sudden thought crossed his mind; if he and Aiko were official partners, would she be dragged into the remedials as well? Elam once more began scanning Aiko curiously. Her posture was perfect, back straight and eyes clear and focused. Aiko was, by all accounts, the picture perfect student: Elam, on the other hand, was slumped in his seat and there were no doubtedly bags under his eyes after having gone sleepless last night. We're so far apart that only a madman would think us partners at first glance, Elam thought pessimistically. What did she see that made her want to be partners in the first place? Hell, after everything I dragged her through yesterday it's a wonder she even acknowledges me anymore. Now that I think about it, that apology felt more like I was some sleazebag begging a friend to take him back in after screwing him over. But instead of spitting in my face and walking away as she should have, she got down and hugged- Elam could only pause and go wide-eyed as he began to comprehend what Aiko had done during his apology. He stared at Aiko for a second longer before quickly averting his eyes, his face burning and his hands nervously fiddling with his hoodie's drawstrings.
