- With the tournament drawing to a close came the executive decision to allow the mentors complete autonomy in how they evaluated their teams and more so their approach to dealing with what had been demonstrated. While none of the agents saw what happened behind the curtain, this decision was not an easy one by any means. Debates between Kidd, Cyrus, the sponsors of the program, and those within the upper echelons of the DWMA all had their say, but as it stood now, Kidd had the final word. That word was something akin to, "You cannot make rash decisions on a premature tournament most of you requested," and that settled the debate.
However, the tournament still had its impact on the DWMA. For the most part, those involved saw the merit of the program. For some, it was a chance to become part of society when they perhaps had no other way. Reality was, it would be feasible to pass through F.A.T.E., retire, then lead a normal life with some type of amnesty all while getting help and providing a service to the world. For some, it was a chance at redemption that they so desperately needed. For some, it was a chance to reflect and grow, not just about the redemption, but about finding themselves. And, for some, it wasn't about what they found, but who they found along the way. It was clear that the Agents, Meister, Weapon, or Witch, all had noteworthy power or ability, and the realization that this was just one of many groups like this demonstrated resources that were being wasted.
Or worse, sent somewhere else.
The Guild of Magic likely took the most positive notes from this exchange. In it, they saw faults in their own kind being overlooked in this effort of inclusiveness while also seeing outstanding demonstrations of comradery, albeit unorthodox at times. The time and money, even being rebranded from the Wiccan Council to the Guild of Magic, seemed to show that there was a definite shift in perspective to how the DWMA approached Witches. This helped to inspire faith in their efforts, and more so, gave them the realization that perhaps even outcasts from their society could find sanctuary in the DWMA. Witches that, quite often, may end up dead or hunted, now had a place they could call home--if only necessary due to their own internal politics.
That is not to say the entire DWMA was elated by the tournament. The misuse of power, premature force of abilities, and brief glimmer of Madness brought forth the fear and concern of many. From the beginning, there were those adamantly against this type of program. Some even more so knowing The Blue Reaper was leading it. Call them cynical, conservative, or perhaps even realistic, but their voices did not go unheard. A Sound Soul Dwells within a Sound Mind and a Sound Body. That is their core tenant, and many of these agents were hardly closer to a sound mind than when they started. At least, in the eyes of these few.
Luckily, that faction of the DWMA was still just the minority.
Once the tournament concluded, there was an opportunity to review all of the matches individuals had been in, then a break for post-tournament festivities. A small faire of sorts outside of the Colosseum with stands and stalls, but nowhere near the size of what it would have been if it were truly public. Of the individuals that could attend this type of gathering, most were encouraged to while Zelda, Emmett, and Rand hosted a heated discussion regarding the tournament with Kidd and Cyrus present, but said heat simmered down considerably once both sides were given a chance to clear the air about what had transpired. It seemed, oddly, that the mentors had a unified grudge against those that wanted this tournament so early, if at all. A silent agreement that pushing these agents too hard this soon was setting them up for failure.
Beyond that, no more incidents such as the attempted escape with Zosar occurred, and the agents were simply allowed to enjoy the rest of their afternoon. The only direction they were given, really, was some slight hints to visit or check on those that were hospitalized, although this wasn't mandatory. It seemed that the tournament went over arguably better than anticipated, given the bleak outlook many had for it going in, and once it was over, the atmosphere of these new teams returned to normal for the most part.
Soon, it would become business as usual. - The next two weeks came and went. A new group was introduced, but had little interaction with the previous one. They seemed to be more isolationist in nature. It turned out, that each group had a slightly different structure to it with the first groups introduced being the most free form. The Project was testing the efficacy of different approaches. With the imprisonment of Zosar becoming public knowledge within the first upcoming week following the tournament, Midori explained that their team would be shifted to Group A-03 and he would be reassigned. While he had another mission planned for them, this was set aside to provide them more training. He worked with Adrian to make his use of Self-Resonance quicker, reducing some of the build-up required to use it. With Zari, he spent the bulk of his one-on-one tutoring trying to emphasize how to better utilize Wavelength Amplification via the Hoshi methods of strict but fruitful repetition as opposed to the Amazing Star method, resulting an eye-opening ability to use even complex martial arts with the style. Jarvis, however, arguable had the most notable result of all: a perfect Calm Seal. As it turned out, the Bloodsucker had spent ample time learning how to manage his soul space and mind over his deceptively longer life, he just required a little guidance for that final step. While the Calm Seal did little to help the two resonate, it did relieve worry of Madness.
The Mages also spent a fair amount of time with each other, preparing for an upcoming, lengthy mission Rand had set up for them that required a long flight. Chanterelle would have mostly spent this time healing, however, in this period learned of the true benefits to her Blood Magic. After her initial hospitalization, she was given a proper assessment by Witches more specialized in healing. Her body was able to break down some of its components to rebuild them, cutting down overall healing times by a massive amount, and more so, it was determined she had effectively cellular immortality. Her body was unique in and of itself. Raph would have faced a considerable amount of backlash from all sides for his behavior, but ultimately did come out with a new spell due delving into his research and training. Maria would have faced far less of this backlash, and instead actually be given more tools to avoid just using an explosive suicide doll. Introduced to Emmett, then subsequently Professor Davis in the Magitech Labs, she was given first level clearance to begin testing Magitech devices she could integrate into her dolls. A week and a half was hardly enough time to do everything, but it would be comparable to a child in a toy store. The caveat being that she was responsible for safely integrating them, and requesting alterations to their design if need be. Ark at this time spent a more than fair amount of time with Rand, whom had explained his disappointment with what he felt like was an underperformance in the arena. But, much like Maria, Rand did not approach him with just mere bland remarks, but a new approach. Per his own creation, Rand granted Ark three golden rings for his left arm, all inscribed with a type of sealing magic similar to that of what he learned was used on Iris. Each, when worn on his biceps or wrists, would limit how much mana he could channel through his gloves, but allow him to focus entirely on what he was doing it with. This resulted in a lesser focus on mana regulation to allow him to focus more on what he actually did with those spells, and use them at their full power. If he wanted his full strength, all he had to do was slip them off.
Emmett started his own whole mess on the side. Complaints to Cyrus were taken seriously, and an investigation into the Thales Agents was under way. This caused quite the stir inside the upper echelons of the DWMA community as Herakles, Rank #3 Meister, was involved. While many tried to keep it quiet, such was truly impossible. This had even reached as far as an upcoming mentor, Starwulf, knowing now that Emmett--and this program--had the potential to cause the eyes of the DWMA to fall on places they hadn't in years. This also opened up a chance for a direct dialogue with Cyrus--alone. The two met. The two spoke. Cyrus took notes. For what it was worth, he was respectful to Emmett's opinion, and opted to follow-up with Salem and the other Fate Consults to see if further progress or implementation could be made. Cyrus may have been an asshole, but he wasn't deaf or incompetent.
While Zelda took the reigns for a while with training as Emmett followed-up with his complaints, she wasn't alone. Gauss spent the better half of a week in the hospital, but even out of it, he wasn't ready for training yet. Instead, Sara with her new partner Eva and Nadia and Dani were setup in semi-competitive combat sims, this time upgraded with audio. The intent was not just to push their teamwork with their weapons, but also to "give them thick skin" to the types of comments they might receive from adversaries like Raph. It may be nowhere near as effective as living person running their mouth, but given one of them was a werewolf and the other possessed a dangerous Wavelength, this type of combined training for partnership and ignoring skin-crawling comments showed some level of effectiveness. The goal, really, was to desensitize them while mid-combat. With Zelda writing the scripts, it created plenty of humorous and intense moments all at once.
Eva proved to be a welcome addition to the team and morale improved for the first week. What the Agents did interpersonally was on them, but what they did under supervision was an entirely different story. The tune of this training changed entirely during the second week. With the return of Gauss, Noah, Prudence, and of course Emmett becoming more active after his complaints were dealt with--for now--training focused on the cardinal issue the majority of the group had: Resonance. Emmett, the prodigy that he is, clearly outlined the issues they faced. To Resonate without a Sound Mind was a recipe for disaster. Whether it was the explosive results of the first match or the false Resonance of the second, this echoed true. Going back to basics, he demonstrated with Zelda what proper Resonance was, how it should look and feel to the Meister and Weapon respectively. He did not just criticize them or tell them they were wrong, he gave them constructive input for how to improve, examples of what proper Resonance was, and told them just how very close they were to this milestone.
This week of focus opened up a new skillset for the Agents. While Sara and Eva were still bonding and getting closer, the mental blocks Eva possessed made Resonance incredibly difficult even if they were on the right track. Nadia and Gauss, with the help of Emmett, proved capable of actually achieving Basic Resonance for a brief period of time, although it was fickle. Gauss could only do so with Noah or Prudence, but not both of them, and if his attention shifted too much between them, Resonance would be lost. Nadia, on the other hand, had to remain stoic and calm during Resonance, as did Dani, else new collars placed on both of them would intentionally disrupt their Resonance--a limit Cyrus himself insisted on until that Murderous Wavelength had some other answer. Nevertheless, each group demonstrated a giant leap forward in their capabilities.
Zosar himself was no longer in a maximum security prison, but he was still excluded from the teams. A solution had to be found for him. It was believed he did not intend on this event occurring, but because the chance for backlash from the Enlighteners or another attempt at escape, they took extra time in forming a solution.
As described above, the newest group--Group A-03-- was about to meet. March 28th was the date. The Friday Prior, they were each informed of who their upcoming partner would be. Zari and Jarvis were assigned to a team as well, Adrian formally being with them. Another Autonomous Weapon, Ashi, would be considered his 'partner' in training, but not quite the same dynamic as standard duo. Aside from those specific pairings, the following pairs were sent out: Eloise Keegan and Sage Chauvelet, Giane Leone and Juno Ramsey, Artem Belouse and Bellamira Ossana, Temperance Quills and Miroku. Each were texted the name and contact number of their partner, and instructed to 'get to know the other' over the weekend. - It is now March 28th, 2067--A Monday. Mentors will begin their post cycles how they deem fit with an introduction post, and timelines will follow appropriately. Flashback posts will be allowed to go over anything that characters may have done in the two week time frame, but they should not contradict what is pre-established and must be somehow noted with a "Flashback" title clearly. Unless it becomes a problem, specific times and dates should not be necessary for these unless it becomes a problem. The goal is to move forward with the option to describe past events beyond the brief explanation in the previous tabs. The four new player-character groups are also open to writing out their first meetings, but if ample time is spent together over the weekend, we do suggest one or two detailed scenes with a written transition into March 28th meet up with the mentors. Remember, the posts for March 28th are the active timeline and are priority over flashbacks--this applies to everyone.
As for all of the new players, welcome! You are starting out in Phase 2 of the game, which is a great starting point. You get a chance to see as other characters have progressed while also starting your own adventure. Given the most abundant answer I saw in the character-updates thread was training, we opted to allow this flashback sequence to flavor your characters slightly. That is, if you are the type of player that enjoys and or has time to write an active and flashback posts. They are not mandatory. We like to provide options here!
A note to all those posting flashbacks/collabs that aren't in the active March 28th timeline, please do somehow note the post is a flashback in a clear way so we can easily differentiate the timelines.
