Sands of Glory

Speaking of character creation, are we using the rules in Scroll of Heroes to make our heroic Mortals, or are we using the ones in the corebook?

The legends I'm mainly basing this off come from, like, 6th century Wales, which was itself based of the even older Celtic myths of Finn. I'm not going for the chevalier in plate mail riding a big white steed, which is probably what you're imagining, but something a lot closer to the original source material.

Right, then let me try to find that scroll. I think I have it around here somewhere.

And even if it is not a "Knight in Shiny Armor" type he is still not a tribesman. Try figuring out how one of the tribesmen could of joined, why they would, and why they would be excepted. If you can get that to make sense then I think that would work.

Edit-So, after hunting down that book and scanning through it, I was very sad to see they do not have a hunter archetype. I was hoping that you would okay the three abilities I have chosen for a quick made up hunter archetype?

Survival for the whole surviving out in the wilderness and being able track animals type things.

Awareness for the whole seeing the deer you want to shoot at before he sees you thing. This could be stealth instead if you want, both would work well.

And finally, Archery for the whole actual hunting animals bit. Throwing could be substituted, but in the Desert\Savanna areas of the south I would think bows get used more often then throwing axes and spears.

Hmm, I lack scroll of kings, I've been drafting from the core book. Could somebody outline the differences please?

Choose 3 related abilities where you want to get an extra ability dot (Which can bring you to 4 dots in those abilities prior to spending BP) and get them okayed by Shadow Red Claws.

As you haven't even seen his backstory so you have no real idea what he's like, I'm curious as to how you came to this (Or indeed any) conclusion about my character.

Seeing as how we are all supposed to be people from the same nomadic tribe that just turned into adults (which means we are all probably 16-18 years old). Making your character a 'Knight errant searching for the one true lord of all that is' that's also part of an organization devoted to the same thing doesn't seem to fit into that requirement when I look at it. How did this order run into the tribe we are all from? Why did they recruit a child into it? Why did the tribe let them recruit a child? After recruiting said child, why did they not take him away to be trained and leave the new recruit with the old tribe?

I'm sure you can make it work, just as long as he fits into the 'You just turned into an adult and want to prove yourself in this trading expedition to Harborhead so your family and nomadic tribe all realize you are as cool as you think you are' requirement.

I'm thinking of creating a warrior, perhaps the eldest son of the tribe's chieftain who eventually exalts to a Dawn Caste Solar. Would that be an acceptable concept?

In that case, my character has fallen for your sister.

Great, I'll begin working on my heroic mortal after I finish my DB for your other game.

In that case' date=' my character has fallen for your sister.[/quote']
Ah, now I'll definitely have to keep my eye on you...

I'm sorry, but this is coming across as a bit patronising. While you say "I'm sure you can make it work" you are at the same time asking me the most blindingly obvious questions, as if I hadn't previously considered them. They're the kind of questions that everyone should include in their applications for any game they enter for the entirety of their lives.

I'd prefer it if you actually saw my character's background and then made a decision, rather than prejudging it.

Then post the background. All I'm going on is what you have posted so far. I've just been trying to toss out an idea or something that you can use.

I notice you've only provided a brief synposis rather than a complete background for your character. I assume you're okay with me commenting on your character under the assumption that you're a complete idiot who won't fill even the most obvious details of his history when it comes time to provide your background, right? Not that your assent actually matters, as it seems it's perfectly okay to give that kind of critique without any kind of okay from the character's creator.

I'm not critiquing your character, I'm pointing out that as written he does not fit into the requirements. Shadow Red Claws asked for 'a short background of your character, as well as what type of exalt you wish to be. This game is open to Dragon Blood Outcastes, Sidereals, Lunars, and Solars.' That's what we both gave him. Thing is, my synopsis also covered the fact that he is a member of the tribe, which is a requirement. So did pretty much everyone else's. Yours did not, and I believed that you might have missed that little thing. When I'm going through the trouble to build a character, I would love to have someone swoop in and point out that 'hey, the ST said everyone needed to come from nexus' if I had missed that note. Because it would suck to get turned away because the character wasn't workable due to a technicality like being from Lookshy. So go right ahead and pick my synopsis apart. The whole point of a rough draft is to pick it apart and point out what works and what doesn't. Or make your character fit into the requirements because it's an awesome character concept. Or both!

I did a big long reply, but after posting I've thought better of it.

Basically, regardless of what you were trying to do, I found the manner in which you did it rude because it insinuated that I was so stupid I wouldn't know how to do the most basic things regarding character creation.

My character has nothing to do with you so while I thank you for the spirit in which you offered your help, focus on your own character and keep your opinion of my character to yourself.

So I think this got missed on the page changeover and the argument, so let me repost this.

So, after hunting down that book and scanning through it, I was very sad to see they do not have a hunter archetype. I was hoping that you would okay the three abilities I have chosen for a quick made up hunter archetype?

So is this acceptable?

I'm sorry for failing to articulate my intentions properly and I apologize for insinuating something that I did not mean to.

:He groaned and shook his head: Text is text and does not include body-language, tone, or such. Get over it. It is that simple. Otherwise you are just whining... a lot Ligier. Which is definitely not fitting of the name you would so choose for a login name here. ;)

And yes, I am a blunt, to-the-point ass hole who says things that I think needs to be said without being angry, or emotionally attached to the commentary. Nobody has to like it actually, but fair warning. ;) So I am hoping all the panties are no longer all twisted up and we can move on.

So, is there still room for one more? I have an idea for a Full Moon.

Basically, he would be the Local rebel. A young warrior with a taste for freedom, a grudge with authority and a knack for getting in trouble.

His clan (or family, or whatever this tribe uses) was once had leadership of the tribe, but fell from that position a few generation ago, so he is a little bit too proud of his abilities and doesn't think very well of the current leaders.

He does seem to have a bright future as a warrior, for his ability together with the tribe's elders desire to send him away to do something useful instead of create trouble among the tribe makes him a prime candidate for conducting assaults on rival tribes.

He would be known to question traditions and lateral thinking. He bases his loyalty, which would be pretty strong, on earned respect instead of authority.

if Happerry is willing to play along, I'd like to see his character and mine having a rivalry, mostly because "You got everything in your favor and don't value it" and "if your father doesn't care for you, he doesn't deserve your respect". Then we'd Exalt and surprise! I'm your Lunar mate! which could lead to a story me dealing with the conflicting ideas and in time a better understanding between the characters.

Alternatively, since you quite of a loner yourself, they could have a more friendly rivalry and I just try to convince you that you shouldn't try give so much of yourself to your father if he doesn't return the respect.

if you are not interested in having a Lunar mate in the group, that is OK too. I think troublesome, freedom-seeking, tradition-questioning Warrior is good enough to build a decent future Lunar around.

So, could that concept work?

Right, having successfully dispelled my hangover, I hereby present a provisional background and character sheet for discussion.

Leaping Tiger

Concept: Preacher/Diplomat

Caste: None (Yet)

Motivation: Become the foremost religious leader of the Desert Siaka tribe

Background:

Born the fourth child of an influential family within the tribe, Tiger suffered the typical frustration of being overshadowed by his elder siblings in many ways. His eldest brother a warrior without peer, and the second skilled in the working of hides and other raw goods, Tiger found himself casting around for acknowledgement, and a chance to prove himself and stand out from his brothers.

As he grew, he began to fall in with the priests (or insert correct noun) of the tribe, learning a great deal about the centuries of proud tradition which preceded him. He rapidly developed a strong faith, both in the tribe and its patron, and would begin to discuss it with anyone foolish enough to stand still for too long. It steadily emerged that Tiger had an affinity for people, able to hold the attention of many listeners, or halt a passer-by with but a look. Taking advantage of this, the tribesmen have also taught Tiger of the arts of negotiation and bartering, in the hopes that this will aid them in the markets of Harbourhead.

Tiger is a courteous, respectful young man, who speaks clearly and firmly, as well as possessing a gift for tribal song and several instruments. While he is a patient man, he is nonetheless very driven, his eyes possessing a fierce strength of belief which impresses itself on others. Most people need only meet him once for him to stick in their memory.

Tiger’s great flaw is his hubris. He has risen to be noted in a very short time, and his interpersonal skills mean that many will willingly lend him an ear. The priests talk of great things. Tiger is a rising star, and he knows it, fully intending to cement a position within the upper echelons of the tribe. He intends to bring his personal skills to full bear in the towns of Harbourhead, securing many favourable deals for the tribe is the next step in his long campaign to increase his standing and recognition.

As an additional thought, might be worth considering the possibility of our characters being brothers, Lando? That could lead to some interesting roleplaying. :)

Well, if you want I can give that a try. I don't see any harm, besides the fact noted on the bottom of this paragraph, on putting that in at least. Though its less that my character's father does not care for me then like every time he sees me he sees his beloved wife's death. Its not like I would be the only one in that family with issues. But just to warn you, about the whole lunar mate thing... Well you been referring to your character as a male, and my character is a male. While I have no problem with people who swing that way, I doubt that I could realistically roleplay that. It's just not something I am comfortable with, at least in my first time with Exalted and fourth character I have ever played.

An attempt to shift the character around somewhat, and I noticed that danelsan's concept had a lot of the things that I had wanted for my guy but hadn't put down yet. So here's the revision.

Background: When Fox was born, astrological signs said that he could be a great merchant. Normally this really wouldn't have had much influence on his upbringing, but his father (something of a merchant himself) took it as a sign and basicly bullied his son into learning how to be a merchant. And he's good at it, he understands how to deal with outsiders and speak their languages and convince recalcetrent traders that yes they should buy from the tribe and yes they should charge slightly less for the things the tribe needs.

Now, a problem exists when you expose a child to multiple societies at a young age, they pick up on things that they really shouldn't. Fox, for instance, picked up stories. Action stories. Bits and pieces of tales about the Dragon Blooded host and how they fought the Raksha out of creation. Fragments of Daine and the Wolf, an ancient tale of heroism, most of the times he's heard it it's been about a pair of Realm Dynasts hunting Anathema, but once he's heard it told that they were a pair of Stars come from heaven to fight the Behemoth Ur-Galorsh-Who-Makes-Puppets. The second story was more entertaining. What all these stories have done is make the boy resent the fact that he's going to be a merchant for the rest of his life. He desperately wants to have stories written about his exploits, but he's to loyal to his family and tribe to just abandon them. And then there's the chief's daughter.

He's fallen for her. How could he just run off and leave her behind?

Upon exalting, he will become an Lunar with a Fox totem
