Sure. You have sage advice.
Psychie Psychie Epiphany Epiphany Hey, ladies. In the spirit of roleplaying, Siembieda himself has said, "You are limited only by your imagination." You have the blessing of your Game Master and fellow Atlantean PC. We must make the most of our time lest we waste it; this includes our gaming time. It is in that spirit, I offer this:

Psychie, I recommend you create your True Atlantean Cyber-Knight. Perhaps this background may help?

What if your True Atlantean performed some Cyber-Knight-level heroic deeds, she followed the Code of Chivalry naturally (without any outside benefits; it simply was her way of life), was seen by the Cyber-Knights as one of their own, but could never become one because the surgery might kill her - until one day, that option was taken out of her hands. By whatever means you feel most comfortable with (be it self-sacrifice or just some accident or what have you), she suffered some injury/ailment/etc. that was in the process of killing her. True Atlantean magic and science could not save her.

But it was discovered that there was one method that had a chance, one that her Clan and allies could not offer - undergo the surgery required for Cyber-Armor.

Perhaps as a result, some of her True Atlantean powers and benefits would suffer (reduced or eliminated access to Tattoo Magic, less P.P.E., and the like). Perhaps she might have to take medicines of odd varieties in order to remain alive (high-maintenance like the Ghost in the Shell cyborgs). Perhaps her very mind might struggle with the circumstances surrounding her injury (assassination attempt? Perhaps to get at someone who loved her? But it ultimately failed? Now she has a lifelong enemy who must return to finish the job. What if your character were the target of a Master Sunaj Assassin's attack and the only living being ever to survive it? You must be killed in order for their honor to be satisfied. You must stop them in order for the Code of Chivalry to be satisfied lest they continue their evil. You were innocent after all. They kill innocents. You have some lead in their direction and they don't know it.).

Perhaps this Cyber-Armor could only be added by the finest Cyber-Knights alive? Thus, she would be indebted to these masters for life?

But it works. It comes at the cost of tattoo magic (or perhaps she can keep her current tattoos but gain no more if you are looking for a balance), but this True Atlantean's ability to learn psychic powers come out unharmed. The surgery succeeded and her body, though weak and fragile at first, could still go on. In time, years I imagine, she would heal amongst those whom she loves to be around. Be kept a secret from the Sunaj who perhaps believe her dead. Maybe she has to change her very name and hide her Clan name for her own safety? And protected by that secret, be trained as a Cyber-Knight and become them in name as well as in body and soul. Her clan and the Cyber-Knight group in question might bond that much closer and she would become a child of not one but both worlds - truly belonging to both. And she would live with continued responsibilities to both.

Ultimately, the fine details would be up to you and Pips. But this path or one like it might help you play what you really want for a long, long time. We only get out of our games what we put into them and making a character is only the beginning. A foundation. A preparation for years to come. The stronger that foundation, the more everyone in the game has to build upon.

It begins with our imaginations. =)

Honor and fun,
Dann =)

With this advice being given, Epiphany Epiphany what is your ruling on me having additional magic tattoos other than the two basic ones that every Atlantean gets? By the book, I can get as many as six before becoming an MDC being. I wouldn't mind getting the Invulnerablility one, but if that would be too much I can pass on it.

On the one hand, per Forums of the Megaverse® • View topic - Rifts FAQ
"Question: Can an Atlantean (who, per Atlantis WB, cannot be "transformed" by any physical means) have the CyberKnight's Cyber Armor (which eventually becomes a living part of him, but not at first) grafted onto him?
Answer: Yes"

On the other hand, per the Atlantis book pg 16:
"Only Undead Slayers / Tatooed Men are mega-damage creatures."

I'm admittedly not a True Atlanteans expert. Am I missing something else here?

They're is a magic tattoo called Invulnerablility that at a cost of 40 ppe gives the character 75 MDC per level for I think ten minutes per level. I was wondering if I could get that one to boost my survivability. If not, that's cool. I have a lot of good stuff going for me already.

Epiphany Epiphany Per Secrets of the Atlanteans, page 49 (physical copy) in the True Atlantean R.C.C. under Cybernetics and Bionics: "If a True Atlantean loses a limb, he will strive to get to a Healing Pyramid where he can be made whole. If that is not feasible, he may settle for a Bio-System, organic, replacement. All Atlanteans are attracted to natural things and seldom seek out bionic reconstruction or cybernetic implants. Cybernetics and any mechanical systems built into the human body interfere with and reduce the potency of magic and spell casting. However, Atlanteans who do not use magic, other than few tattoos, may consider as many as five cybernetic implants, but never bionics. Even partial bionic reconstruction likely to make an Atlantean feel violated and despondent, or drive him completely insane."

Psychie Psychie Correct. P.P.E. cost: 40. Duration: "10 minutes per level of experience or until the total number of M.D.C. is depleted." Source: Secrets of the Atlanteans, page 162 (physical copy).

Thanks, haven't read that book. The joys of a system this old; later books errataing the earlier errata. That said, it looks like there are a number of True Atlantean Cyber Knights out in the wild already. I think the ship has sailed.

i somehow do too- this system is quite alot. I know what i want for my charictar, and I know their backstory, the mechanics are just tough, and I dont have time to figure them out for a few more days.

EmperorNorton1 EmperorNorton1 And that, my good Anarchist, is why you have not one but several quality Players here (not to mention GM) that will help you sort it all out. I've been saying this for a long time (I may have even created the saying in these precise words), "Real Life Always Comes First." And if that means that you don't have the time and opportunity to learn game mechanics, then hey! What is a table - even a virtual table - of friends and would-be friends for? =)

P.S. Having said that last line, I am nearly certain someone in this game is going to have a silly follow-up answer to my rhetorical question. That too is what friends are for. =)

yeah, that is true. everyone in this group seems so cool, and while I dont have really any friends on this site, as i am very new, I am hopefull (I really do think so) that I will get closer to the lot of you!

Oh, and friends are for crime making terrible memes about our characters. once we all have ocs up, my shitty but serviceable photoshop skills shall see much use.

If anyone would like help with character creation, happy to help!

If you guys have other thoughts on what kind of general mission-type you might want to pursue, it might also help with char gen.
i.e. if you guys think you're going to stealth the campaign, it'd probably help if most/all of you picked up Prowl.
If you guys are going to go in guns blazing, might help to not bother picking up Prowl. ;)
etc.

Alternatively, I'm fine if you guys want to just build whatever seems fun for you. We get the game underway. After your characters have grappled with their existential crisis and started deciding what to do about the future, and after you've had a chance to practice and get into character, you may find that you want to rework your sheet a little. I'm good with that.

Ideally, rebuilds should be done by the time you guys actually leave Tolkeen (or you decide to stay in Tolkeen to (a) try to build its army and military strategy knowing the future (b) get into politics (c) go hunting for Coalition spies in the city or (d) all of the above!

Epiphany Epiphany I have some questions! *wave wave*

1. My Bud Sherwood Sherwood (tagging him because I'm talking about him - yes, I am!) has made a high-octane character with Tattoo Magic + M.D. Martial Art Powers. In short, he's made one bad to the bone, CS-stomping juggernaut! Hooray! My question is - do you want the whole party to be on that level of power? (I'm asking because if folks want help and I'm on, I'd like to know the GMs intentions.)

More questions will follow but that's the big one for me at the moment. =)

Characters can be on that level, if they want to be. The Coalition Wars books have a bunch of NPCs statted up, many of them pretty dang powerful. The intent is that these PCs should rival them, in experience if not in reputation. If folks want to play a Technical Specialist or a Rogue Scholar, I've no objection, but this campaign's uniquely suited to higher-end PC concepts.

I'm glad no one's tested that by asking to play a Cosmo-Knight. ;)

Bear in mind, the antagonist for this game isn't a single high level adversary but arguably the greatest military war machine in the world. By all means, play high-octane characters. They'll need every edge they can get.

Which reminds me. For those inclined, I'm considering the use of the Mass Combat rules introduced in the Rifter #23 pgs. 77-91. Particularly for larger engagements at least.

Any thoughts, opinions, concerns?

I thought you made it clear in the beginning that you didn't want characters of that magnitude? Perhaps you just implied it? (I got that feeling from somewhere and I thought it was here.) You hardly ever say things you don't mean so I took this to be a statement of intent. I think that is what guided my earlier question just now. =)

So... you want PCs close to Cosmo-Knight-level but not quite? To talk Phase World, 1st stage Prometheans but not 2nd stage or talking dragons, tough hatchlings but no adults?

Perhaps it would aid the group as a whole to know who has access to Rifter #23?

Another question I have (going into time travel here) - if, in 109 P.A., the PCs fell through a rift and arrived back in 101 P.A., did they arrive exactly in their 101 P.A. bodies? Or did their 101 P.A. bodies vanish? Or do they exist somewhere and now we've got a Time Lord-level problem? I know you touched on this but I'd like finer details if I may?

Well, I have a pretty bad-ass Cyber Knight up that is mostly done. Epiphany Epiphany please take a look at her and see what you think.
Psychie Psychie Hey! (/silliness on) You had the word "placeholder" in that spot! That made me think you were playing a True Atlantean Cyber-Knight named Placeholder! You fooled me! I want a refund! (/silliness off. Or... wait. Does it ever really turn off?) =)
