Rebirth: The Highland Academy of Magical Studies

Gray took Bane's hand with a smile. "The name's Gray Dalenforp-er, I mean Dalenforth." Wow. That was embarrassing. Gray hoped Bane wouldn't pick up or ask why he messed up his own last name. It's not like he'd tell him anyway. Afterall, he just met Bane. Waiting to find out why they had to form pairs, Gray tried to think of something to talk about. Something that wasn't too personal. His mind then drifted to Anya. The two were friends for years and yet she dumps him for some random guy? He didn't even seem like much. Gray looked much better than the other kid did. Wait. No. Gray quickly looked into his mirror. Okay. He was safe for now. He had almost forgotten how ugly jealousy could be. Luckily, he still looked good.

He then remembered he was there with someone. "Sorry you had to see such a hideous face of mine," he said flipping his hair out of his eyes. "But fortunately, that phase is over and I'm back to fabulous."

*****

Anya pouted. The girl she jumped had managed to escape so now she was with no partner again. Maybe she should've partnered with Gray after all. But they both came to this academy to meet new people and make friends. And pairing off right away wasn't going to help them do that. Plus he was a sore loser. As she scanned the crowd for her next prey, she heard a voice addressing her. It was the boy from before. Had things not worked out with the blue haired girl? Apparently so since he asked Anya if she still didn't have a partner. Well, he didn't really ask but made his availability aware. Either way she was still in need of a partner. She smiled at him. "Sure. The hunting isn't so good today. Like I told you before, my name is Anya Fullbuster. It's nice to meet you."

Lifting his formerly downed gaze, Eeliphas now simply stared the girl right into the eyes, his view only wavering for split-seconds in which he quickly studied her face.

Only after several seconds of awkward silence did he remember that he had forgotten one of the first, but most important, steps of the 'manners' the Lady had taught. Shrinking back for a moment, he hastily replied "Eeliphas, Eeliphas Hur-" he interrupted himself midsentence, before starting anew "- Eeliphas Yonah, I am..." again, he struggled with his words "I- I must seem quite strange to you..." he added with a stutter, his mechanical jaw replicating the resulting missounds quite ridiculousely, gesturing with his spindly fingers to his dark, robe-like attire "I apologize, I originate from a place that might be called far away and have... only been in this, 'city', for a very short time. Thank you, for telling me your name and- letting me look at you."

Tybalt looked back up from his shoes, scoping out the details of Anya's facial features, and looking at her eyes rather intently for a moment. He smiled slightly, and nodded.

"T-Thank you." He said in an appreciative tone, evidently thankful. Celestine snickered to herself, making Tybalt's eyebrow twitch.

I swear if you say one more thing I'll lose my temper. He spoke mentally to the spirit, his angry thoughts not betraying the still normal and sincere look on his face. He was excellent at hiding when he spoke to Celestine. He glanced up at front of the room, where the Headmaster seemed almost ready, fiddling with some odd device in his hands.

Then my lips are sealed for now, boy, but so is my aid. You are on your own for now. She spoke, unhappy her fun was ruined. She had been enjoying laughing at Tybalt's expense and poking fun at him. She'd spite him back if he wanted her to be quiet. What did he expect? With that she returned to the black pendant silently, delving into the pocket dimension it held at it's core.

With Celestine's mental presence gone, Tybalt felt a mixture of relief and worry. She was immensely annoying when she acted childish like that, but he'd be next to helpless if something dangerous happened. It wasn't like he could do magic on his own....

Taking a deep breath and raising an eyebrow ever so slightly at Anya, his visage became one of curiosity.

"N-Nice to meet you Anya, I-I'm Tybalt Hale. You can just call me Ty if you w-want though." He mentioned, figuring he should tell her his name as well. Social situations usually called for it, he had noted.

Connie sat down at a table, parking Cyr beside her. Their line of sight was obscured by a group of giggling girls sitting at the table in front of their otherwise empty table, in-between the two of them and Tybalt. Connie peered through the group to get a better look at Tybalt as he talked to the girl, who she assumed was now his partner. Man, this kid was hella-awkward, and seemed waaaay too bookish to fight. It couldn't be the same badass she'd seen last night...

Connie glanced over at Cyr, biting her lower lip.

"You'll never believe me if I told you, but I saw him last night... In the restricted section of the library... And something happened. Do you know him, his name or anything?" She asked Cyr, seeming slightly on edge, and overly curious. But with the display she'd seen... She could afford to be.

Glancing between each other, Headmaster Nilast and Professor Nexter exchanged thoughts and messages with simple facial features.

Headmaster Nilast looked quite sheepish, obviously a little more confused with his own contraption than he should have been.

Professor Nexter was insisting the Headmaster hurry the hell up, else he be the laughing stock of his own Academy for having trouble with his own devices.

With a click, and a sudden smile, Nilast managed to open up the device, releasing a spray of light into the air. The light itself seemed malleable and ever-shifting, and it split into hundreds of little pieces of varying sizes. They seemed to release a strange humming noise, almost human and relaxing, and had shifting, easily identifiable golden pieces in the liquid seeming light that made them up.

"Alright students! Time to play a game I've been playing since I first came to the Academy, Lylight Life. The teams, in your cases today, partners, will go about searching these little Lylights around the campus. They'll try to dodge, dupe, and otherwise avoid you, but you'll be able to catch them with hard work. Once they're all caught, I'll announce it and have you all assemble back here. This is to familiarize yourself with the new area you're all in, and have fun working with new people you've met today!" He explained, obviously in a bright and cheery mood, getting to announce one of his favourite games to the students.

"There will be a timer. Once the game begins, you'll have 3 hours. If not all the Lylights are found by then, they'll begin to converge here, and be much harder to catch, so don't think you can be lazy to win this game. Once they're back in the Grand Hall, they'll return to Headmaster Nilast and be off limits. How many make it back to him determine the difficulty of the second game we'll play as well, so I recommend you catch as many as possible. Game begins now!" Professor Nexter shouted in explanation, the Lylights darting in erratic patterns and out the front doors of the Grand Hall, scattering all over campus in a dazzling display.

"Eeliphas," Eroria said, trying out her partner's name. "Sounds like we both have weird names starting with E," she joked, laughing nervously at herself. She looked at her partner, feeling nervous. She guessed she wasn't alone in it, but she felt better. It seems that her suspicions were as silly as she thought they might be. He wasn't even from around here. Besides he didn't know her actual last name and they had to be people who didn't know her family. No use in worrying.

"I like it." Eroria waved a hand at Eeliphas. "No, no. It's fine. You are welcomed. But there is no need to apologize." 'Especially to me,' she thought, but did not say. He seemed nervous enough. No reason to make it moreso.

Eroria looked at the Headmaster as he explained why they had been called here and ask to partner up. It sounded fun, if challenging. She was certain they'd probably do okay. Still she wanted to have fun. Eroria stood and smiled at Eeliphas.

"Let's go start looking."

----

Bane raised an eyebrow at Gray's slip, but he didn't say anything. Maybe he made him nervous? He held back a chuckle. Probably not, but it was a nice thought. Bane wouldn't mind having that kind of effect on people. Making them all shy and nervous. Worried because Bane was just so attractive and charming. Bane didn't hold back the laugh that time. Well he was clearly getting delusional.

"Gray. Right. Well it is very nice to meet you. I think we are going to be fabulous partners don't you?"

Bane watched him look quickly in a mirror. Well this one was just a question waiting to be asked, wasn't he? Bane shook his head, giving him a charming smile. "Oh no. It's fine. I don't think you could look hideous. But that is just my lowly opinion." Bane shrugged. "Now that we have introduced ourselves I think it's time to see how well we work together." Bane motioned for Gray to start walking. The game sounded like fun to him.

"so... we have to familiarize ourselves with the area... by running about trying to catch those... things?"

he leaned over to David "you'd think a tour would be easier..." after this, and a light chuckle, Lucian raised his hand "uhh, excuse me, headmaster? what exactly are these Lylights? are they some kind of summon or...?" he cleared his throat then put his hands on his hips, he had never seen anything like those Lylights before "oh and another thing Mr Headmaster, sir, can these Lylights be caught through normal meals, like catching them in our hands, or do we need to use magical means? and last, do they have any method of protecting themselves? 'cos if i end up chasing one over like, a rooftop or at the top of a tree, i don't want one giving me a shock and sending me falling to the ground is all..." he felt embarrassed asking these questions, since upon retrospect, they seemed kinda silly, but he liked to get all the data he could before doing things.

The Academy

David simply listened to the brief. As he listened,he removed his tie and suit jacket, revealing his white button up shirt beneath. Folding up the jacket,he placed it on a nearby chair, and set his tie on top. As Lucian asked his questions,David rolled up his sleeves, and began to answer the questions with his own assumptions, which he saw as common sense. "We're fresh meat,Lucian. They probably expect us to know nothing useful at this point. So that means mundane captures. And something tells me that staff members or senior students will be shadowing us,for safety's sake. Some people here are the heirs of great dynasties. Imagine the fallout should one break their neck falling from a tree." He approached the door, and opened it,then called over his shoulder, "C'mon,Lucian! Time's a-wasting!"

Hell

As Hope and Vent made themselves manifest,Steven immediately relaxed. I'm invincible with these two. Steven simply fell onto Vent, his strength quickly fading. He stopped splitting his own atoms, and re-stabilized them, but he didn't stop splitting the atoms in the detached prosthetic. He hurled it at the deranged figure. The prosthetic's hand was still flipping the bird. Steven smirked at the figure,an expression that read "Checkmate, sucka!" At the same time,he jerked his head backwards, gesturing to the portal. Fire in the hole, bastard.

Gray gave a sigh of relief when Bane said that there was no way he could look ugly. That was nice of him. Then Gray's eyes widened in slight panic. W-why would a stranger be so nice to him like that. Unless . . . dear lord, he was in love with him. Oh God. Curse these good looks of his. What was Gray supposed to do? Supposed to say? He didn't feel the same way about Bane. Sure the carrot boy seemed like a nice kid but Gray liked girls. Plus he wasn't ready for a relationship. Sure, he told his roommate he was looking in order to seem more impressive but in truth, he wasn't ready. With school and the search for friends, how could he fit in a girlfriend, or in this case boyfriend. He'd have to turn Bane down. Say that he was flattered but just got out of something big. Yeah. That'll do nicely.

Before Gray could say anything though, the headmaster announced the rules for the game and the creatures were set loose. With what troubled him earlier out of his mind, he followed Bane in pursuit of the Lylights. "So you got a plan or something? 'Cause Anya says that I'm not the best strategist. How are we supposed to catch these things anyway?"

*****

Anya's eyes lit up as the headmaster explained the rules of the game. "Yay, Lylights!" She then turned to face Ty again. "What are Lylights?" Didn't matter what they were though. Anya loved animals, all sorts of animals. Except hippos. Hippos were terrifying and just weird. Oh and mosquitoes. Bloodsucking little bastards. Soon the creatures were unleashed and began scrambling about. She looked at the display in awe. She had to catch one, whatever it was.

She began to chase one particular Lylight, determined to catch it. After running for a bit, she remembered that she had a partner and turned around. She grabbed Ty's hand and began pulling him in the direction of the Lylight that had already escaped her field of vision. "Come on, slowpoke. Hurry up. We have to catch more than anyone else." She tried to speed up and drag Ty along. Unfortunately, she should've spent more energy on watching where she was going. Not even four feet further and she had slammed the back of her head into a wall.

Anya let go of Ty's hand to grab her head. She stumbled a bit but didn't quite fall down. "Owie. Stupid wall." She then turned around and gave it a punch. "If only you weren't there."

"We could... certainly, aimlessly wander around in search of the... 'lylights'..." Eeliphas stated, gaze set without blinking onto Eroria's eyes "However, and I must apologize again, I am currently not in the best of states suited for running... perhaps we should attempt a more, tactical approach? My knowledge of the surroundings here are... severely limited. Would you perhaps know of a place here in this area that may be used as... overlook? A place from which we have view over the entire... campus? If it is not too, far, then perhaps we could start our... further course of action from there?"

His voice kept faltering, both courtesy of the still-not-entirely familiar artificial jaw and general lack of experience in social interaction, but he was hopeful that he was capable of getting his point across, at least.

There was a slight hesitation and in it, the girl next to the one she asked had asked her as well. Lux was fidgeting, resisting the urge to run away and find somebody else. Eventually the confused middle girl talked, slightly baffled at her situation. There was another hesitation, she was probably thinking her choices over but she eventually turned to Lux and the back to the other girl, bowing in her direction.

"I...I think I will partner with her for this endeavour this time."

At the girl’s words, Lux was slightly pleased, but also feeling a little guilty for the girl that had been left alone. It seemed the two were roommates given the girl’s next words, and the redhead seemed to leave on a good note. Her hand had been left hanging, but she quickly brought it up to salute, introducing herself “Lux Blythe at your service!” With a smile on her face, she stepped closer to the girl to confirm their partnership.

Soon enough the headmaster seemed to get the device in his hands working, a light show was forming above the two. There must’ve been mirrors somewhere to project so many of the anomalies, but Lux paid it no mind, listening to the rules of the game. They had to catch these things… the turquoise haired girl wasn’t really sure how they were supposed to catch light. Maybe she could leave it up to her partner though…

As the things were released from the grand hall, Lux turned back to the girl, still not sure of her name. “How are we supposed to catch light?” she wonders, rhetorically, not too worried about finding them.

Cry blinked, looking at the girl. Was she some sort of fanclub or something? And...hadn't Tybalt gone into the green house? Shrugging, she nodded slightly, "I ran into him yesterday, he's a good kid, I guess. A bit stupid but, that's just personal opinion." She leaned forward, speaking quietly as the adults addressed them. "What'd you see in the library?"

----

"I guess that means it's us, huh? You know what a lylight is?" Vative glanced over at her partner, before back at her books. Looks like she didn't need them after all, but maybe one of them.... She grabbed one on beasts and spirits, flicking through pages trying to find the -L section. "How would we even catch one?"

--

From beneath a mop of hair, dark brown eyes peered out nervously The partner they had found was large, unexpected, a brash. The kind of kid that would make a bully piss themselves, really. And, unfortunately for the much smaller, scrawny boy, mutism was not something he understood. As he leaned in close, nearly shouting in his ear what the professor had said, he flinched back, catching the edge of a chair. Tumbling backwards, he nailed the ground hard. His pen and paper pad sliding across the floor to another students feet. Oh sugar...

Looking down, Lucien saw the notepad and pen at his feet, leaning down, he picked them up, seeing where it had come from, he walked over to him "hey, i guess this is yours" he says, handing the pad and pen to Hal, then giving Hal a hand back up, looking to the big guy who was partnered with him "you know, you don't need to be so loud, you're annoying everyone with all you're yelling"

Hal blinked as his tools were offered back to him, along with a hand up. Shuffling quickly back to his feet, he bowed his head in thanks. He heard his partner grumble, before he was grabbed roughly by the arm, a hand messing up his already untidy hair. "I wouldn't need to shout of this one could actually understand what was going on around him." As the kid looked down, he spoke up, and spoke slower, "Ain't that right?"

Lucien's eyes narrowed "i don't think he likes that..." he said, making eye-contact with the bully, he turned to Hal "hey buddy, how about you be in my group?" before the bully could say anything, he glared at him, summoning a small flame in his hand "those clothes on you look flammable... back off" he said to the bully, his tone and eyes dead-serious.

Hal blinked, going wide eyed. Putting up a hand to protest, he was only shoved towards the teen with the flaming hand. "You can have 'em, I don't want an idiot for a partner anyway." As his partner walked off, Hal felt nervous building up in him. Oh god, he was without a partner, and partners meant two, not three. Oh....grasping his pen tightly, he wrote quickly, cursive scrawling out over the pad below crossed out lines. Flipping it around, trying to act like it was perfectly normal to do that, he waited.

Is it really okay to do this?

Lucien read what was on the paper "aah ok, so you're mute... well, i think that the teachers would rather you're in a group of 3 than being paired with an asshole like that guy"

Lucien put a hand on Hal's back, leading him back to his group "come on, i'll go introduce you to my other group member" but before he got back there he stopped "oh right, I'm Lucian riddle, and you are...?"

He went red with embarrassment as his state was put so bluntly. Though the touch was unexpected, it was at least light, and not at all like the other kids grip had been. Looking up at the boy that was called Lucian, he felt a goofy smile cross his face and he couldn't wipe it off. Looping in big letters at the top of the page, he wrote three letters, showing it proudly as they stopped walking. Hal.

"Hal huh? ok, cool"

He bought Hal over to David "hey David, this is Hal, he's joining our group" he said with a big smile on his face, he looked to the head of the room again, waiting for the activity to start

Eroria looked at Eeliphas. She saw several groups already leave. She didn't have high hopes of winning anything but catching at least one or two would be something. She wondered if she could call one to her if she got close enough. But then she worried she might crush it or something. Then again how would they catch them if not by hand? This was not going to be easy.

"No it's fine. I am not that good at running around a lot either. I think...there might be a balcony around here somewhere," she guessed. Eroria then shrugged looking down at the ground. "I don't really know the place either. Sorry you ended up with me as a partner. I am not much help."

Eroria looked back up at
Eeliphas. "Should we go check for a balcony? Or maybe a tree if it's tall enough," she suggested as well. "Of course I'm not that good a climber, so..."

----

"Do I have a plan? No. Not really." Bane turned his head a little to look at his partner. He smiled at Gray. "I am not sure. I don't know much about Lylights. But I really don't want to come out of this empty-handed."

Bane thought about what would be the best way to go about it. He stopped walking for a moment and twisted his face in concentration as he tried to figure it out. If he had to be the brains right now, he didn't want to mess this up for them. He then snapped his fingers. "How about we follow another group? They might catch one and show us how to do it. I also don't think we should go too far. If they all come back to the grand hall eventually, then we'd be able to catch them at that time."

Bane then shrugged, looking at Gray. "Unless you have a better idea in mind? I am open to suggestions."

((If sir Coro would perhaps be so kind as to describe the Academy Stadium, perhaps, that would be helpful.))

"I never judged you, nor will I ever. I just feel... fortunate, to have a partner." Eeliphas answered Eroria's apparent apology for her self-perceived low quality of her peership.

"As for the balcony..." the student let his gaze wander within the hall they stood. Though he did not find something like stairs that obviousely led to some outlook, his eyes did stop at a large board fastened to the wall- a map, a layout of the schoolgrounds. Stepping closer, he beheld each of the symbols, then the explanations on the lower right side.

Tapping carefully with a cloth-covered finger on a large round symbol, he said "Perhaps here we might find success, the Academy Stadium, by the looks of it, directly south of this hall. Even if it does not overlook the entirety of the area, within it will certainly hide at least some of the lights."

Turning his head to face his partner, he asked "Shall we go?"
