It's complicated. Okay... Basicly put... Reapers are these shadow like creatures. They swarmed the world and started killing humans. Humans were too weak to stop them so they creates weavers witch are humans that have undergone a surgery to have a reaper core in them so that they can have reaper powers. Then there are the sins.... They are reapers that are more like humans.... But they are more deadly than any reaper.

How do our powers... Or whatever work? Are they powers? Or is it just the origin?

The Thread powers came from surgery. They are strings of elemental magic which only do one type of element.

Just think they are threads of magic or string that move and have abilities of the element you chose. The limits are of that element. It all depends on the element. However if you are a recuit that wasn't transferred your abilities are weak but if you are transferred they are somewhat halfway of a squad leader capabilities.
