I feel like “the internet” is a little too broad a term for me to say yes to this question. I do feel there are a lot of kids that shouldn’t be in a lot of parts in the internet, especially without supervision, but I wouldn’t say a person reading Wikipedia articles is a bad thing no matter how young they are, or that a kid getting to watch YouTube videos is necessarily a bad thing.
On the other hand, I do feel things like social media should be kept out of their hands, I would say of the top of my head at least until they graduate high school. Then again, social media may be too broad a term too. Like I said, them watching YouTube videos isn’t something I would say is a bad thing, but a child posting too young that’s another story.
Obviously it’s a very complicated and very nuanced issue, but I do feel like while it wouldn’t be right to utterly block children from the greatest gathering of information in human history, one which even educators are increasingly making use of and requiring use of, we should also strive to ensure they can first form some solid basis and connection in their actual life, before letting them fully explore the parts of the internet that can be the most addictive or more demanding to a person’s willpower or which require a thicker skin to navigate.
