history.
an uneasy childhood
ejβs childhood was far from the conventional childhood. coming from two parents who were rooted in poverty, ej had a lot to endure. at just eight years old, he learned his way around the store cameras and stole for his next meal. he was only caught once, stealing a loaf of bread and the shop owner caught him. needless to say, after that fiasco, he was turned over to child protective services.
his parents werenβt inherently bad, however on top of being hoarders, they hardly had enough money for themselves to eat. they had no business bringing a child into the world, despite being loving parents, and for that ej remained in the foster care system until parents who were fit enough to raise him, did.

Lucky J. is a certified nutcase. He can be described as a maniacal genius with the heart of a wolf and a golden tongue. He's scrappy at worst, but when the times get tough he'll be in your corner for anything. Despite being named after some of the most "notorious" biblical traitors in the world, Lucky is more loyal than Lassie and has better hair too. He's not completely calm and collected in social gatherings. He's a loose cannon when it's needed, but he can pull off some of the coolest shit without batting an eye. Equal parts book smart to street smart, Lucky is always plotting a heist and the escape route simultaneously. In what seemed like a jest from God themself: Lucifer J. Slater was an only child, born to two very neglectful people who struggled to take care of him. When the authorities caught them trying to sell their newborn son for alcohol and drugs, his grandmother, Mrs. Tara Slater, stepped in to raise him. Being a 41-year-old single grandmother was incredibly stressful, but she always put Lucky's needs before her own. She took him in not for her own security in old age, but to make amends for the failings of his parents. Watching Lucky grow up reaffirmed her belief in her own nurturing nature. Though she had grown distant from Lucky's father, seeing her grandson happy and thriving brought joy back into her heart, something she hadn't felt since her husband, Tim, was alive.
As Lucky became a teenager, he appeared to be a good person on the surface. However, he had a wild side that he had managed in some ways but not in others. Despite knowing right from wrong, he would seize any opportunity to be mischievous. Tara sometimes wondered if she had raised a nonchalant evil genius, but she loved him nonetheless and knew he would do anything for her.
Despite not being wealthy, Lucky was well cared for. Hand-me-downs were common in their home due to an abundance of men's clothing that Tara couldn't bear to part with. Lucky even adopted his grandfather's style, which was amusing because of the striking resemblance between the two men.

Soo Hyun-Woo is not your typical bad boy, trouble maker. He doesn't own a leather jacket - he's vegan - nor is his face filled with piercings or his body covered in tattoos. He certainly doesn't have a mile long criminal record.
How would he be able to get away with the things he does if he looked and behaved like that? Not a rebel without a cause, Hyun is a conman, an opportunist, and a manipulator.
One first impressions, Hyun-Woo is the kind of guy you'd seek out if you were looking to have fun. He is playful and witty, and a massive flirt, no matter who he is speaking to.
Attracted to the spot light and most comfortable when he is the center of attention, it is clear he is a man who is comfortable with crowds of people and feels at his best when surrounded and adored by others.
Never one to say "no" to anything, he's also the type that more often than not ends up in absurd situations that would get a less intelligent person into a lot of trouble, and most definitely behind bars.
But Hyun-Woo's over the top charm and alluring personality allows him to get away with a lot of shit, as he is skilled in diverting attention and soothing over tensions. And just... not getting caught.
He definitely gives off party-boy vibes - those who know him socially would say the man is rarely sober, unapologetically gay and promiscuous, and always egging other's on to come and join in with his fun. However, this is just one side of who he is.
Underneath the bright smile and flirtatious language, Hyun-Woo is dominating, controlling, manipulative, and opportunistic. He views people as toys and tools for his advancement and amusement.
While he is typically very good at hiding behind his easy going and playful facade, sometimes cracks form once he's lost his temper - and his more arrogant and downright bitchy side shows through.
Overall though, Hyun would be better described as mischievous rather than malevolent, he's not out there murdering people or anything.
He is certainly capable of forming real, meaningful relationships with others. He is patient and helpful, and for close friends - he is incredibly loyal - willing to do anything to help those he considers his true family.

Hyun likes to drink, smoke, do drugs, sing karaoke, sleep with hot guys, and in general build his social connections so that he has a large pool of people willing to do things for him or give him what he wants. And Hyun-Woo likes getting what he wants out of people.

Hyun's least favorite things are when others try to control him - so he has an inherent dislike of authority figures - though he hides that well. He really dos not like when others stand in his way, or try to prevent him from living his life as he pleases. He's also an animal lover and gets very angry when people are cruel to them.

His reputation is therefore good, as his loyalty and love for the group proven over the years growing up together. childhood
Soo Hyun-Woo was born in South Korea as the only son of two lower-class parents just outside of the capital city of Seoul. His family dealt with both housing and food insecurity, and struggled to make ends meet, especially once they had a baby to care for as well.
When his father died when he was only 6 years old, his mother decided to immigrate to the United States where her sister lived, so that she could have better job opportunities and hopefully provide a better future for her son.
After moving to America, his mother worked multiple part time jobs, she was often not around when Hyun-Woo was a child, leading him to become fiercely independent and and even more resistant to her attempts of telling him what to do when she was around.
In elementary school he showed signs of being intelligent, observant, and intuitive, which somehow made his mischievous inclinations and sharp tongue all the worse. From a young age he learned what to say to get certain reactions out of people, and how to mask his true thoughts and emotions.
Teachers and other adult authority figures always seemed to love him, as he was a good student, polite, and focused. Using the positive stereotype of East-Asian students to his advantage, he easily shifted the blame for his own actions and behaviors onto others by feigning innocence and hiding behind a well behaved and formal mask.

As a teenager, Hyun's manipulativeness grew, but so did his rebellious nature. Because of this, his relationship with his mother grew worse. The woman had taken to drinking to deal with her stress and had very little patience to deal with her son's behavior when she was at home.
Their arguments grew more and more intense, and on nights that his mother had off from work, Hyun-Woo often slept over at friend's houses to avoid her, relying more and more on his friends to get by.
Polite and gracious around other people's parents, he continued to be a two faced little shit by using his charms and seemingly innocent looks to pass himself off as a straight-laced stereotype of an Asian immigrant.
Despite his family's low income, thanks to his skillful shoplifting, he was able to dress well and present himself as better off than he actually was.
This in turn, despite his growing criminal behavior, made him appear the opposite of a "bad influence" and allowed him to be a welcomed guest in his friends' homes, despite the fact his backpack was not filled with textbooks and notes, but liquor and weed.
Rather than giving the truth of the cause of the friction between he and his mother - that she was an exhausted, overworked, drunk - he blamed it on her conservative Korean culture, and that she hated him for being gay. This earned him additional sympathy from teachers and other adults as well.
Amongst his closest friends though, there was no question who Hyun was. Fun-loving, generous, and someone they could count on if they needed, well.. anything. He knew people, had connections, and could get things other people his age couldn't - and often for free.
Always with some kind of scheme up his sleeve, Hyun-Woo would go to great lengths for those he felt true loyalty to - whether it was finding drugs and alcohol for parties, pretending to be a father to get others out of class or jobs, or making fake IDs to get into college parties.
He was even willing to take the blame for his friends when they got in trouble. He always had a good reason for it, after all, and people always seemed to want to forgive him after hearing it.
On a deeper level, Hyun-Woo also proved to be a good listener, a sympathetic shoulder to cry on, and someone that his friends group could hang out with to just laugh and escape from reality with for a while.
By this point in his life, he was an witty entertainer, always had something smart or bitchy to say, and seemed to be a truly happy young man who was eager to brighten up his friends' days.
college years
After graduating high school, Hyun-Woo received a full scholarship to enroll in college, thanks in large part to his beautifully written essays and stellar performance during interviews with the admissions staff.
In order to have pocket money, he began dealing pot and other party drugs under the alias "Fat Tony" and writing papers for other students and charging them $15 a page.
Before he turned 21, fake IDs got him served at liquor stores and admitted into clubs (where he loved to pick the pockets of the men he danced with), and it wasn't long before he stepped up his cons and started targeting the tourists he met at the beach or in bars for hook ups.
Often, money would be exchanged for his time and attention, and almost always he would just steal their wallets as he snuck out of their hotel rooms once they'd fallen asleep.
When he was old enough to, he got his first official job as a bartender at his favorite karaoke bar, pulling in a small fortune in tips from flattering and flirting with the drunk men and women he served.
He also dealt drugs both at the bar and on campus. His major in Psychology only advanced his many schemes as it provided him with a deeper understanding of the human mind, behavior, and body language.
He might not look it, but Soo Hyun-Woo is most certainly trouble.

Celes Doe, better known as Bambi, is much like the nickname implies. She is someone with wide-eyed enthusiasm and complete innocence. Or she was when she was five and still believed her parents were soulmates. Some things have changed as a result of the cruel world around her, namely she has become a bit more cynical in how she portrays herself. Less inviting and more prickly to get people to second guess messing with her, even if it goes against her desperate want to be loved. Her only other desire is that of a place to belong, and the fact she lacks them has warped the sweet little girl who loved collecting seashells at the beach into this jealous young woman who is so unsure of who she is from trying to fit into any group that would have her that she is constantly at war with herself. Impulsive in pushing people away and trying to stay close to them, a hopeless romantic who has had her heartbroken so consistently that she is jaded in her prospects. But she just canβt stop herself from trying again, despite knowing that the odds are against her.
She is smart enough to see that people are using her and see the signs that they wonβt change. Which makes it all the worse when they end up ditching her, again, and she is left sobbing into her pillow in her dorm. Wondering why she just canβt make the right choice, make her personality or her looks or whatever the hell is wrong with her better so she isnβt the loser pariah. Her insecurities run all the way to her core beliefs that all she ever will be is the smart girl people use and then lose, or in the worst cases, abuse. Her naivety plays into it making her an easy target with little to no voice to say otherwise, and all the wrong people have taken advantage of that to the point she is willing to settle for scraps when she is bending over backwards to please.

The Doe family at first glance is just like any other. Seemingly loving and friendly with no financial or marital troubles. But then again, not everything is as it seemsβ The Doe family were well off for lower middle class, not the upper middle class they protrayed themselves to be due to Morgan Doeβs excessive drinking and Agatha Doeβs shallow compulsion to be seen as better off than she is. They live in a house they can barely afford that is falling apart underneath the pretty curtains and fresh patches of paint.
The eldest son, Castiel ran out the second he had stashed away enough money to get himself a car, not bothering to look back at his younger brother Raphael and younger sister Celes when he swerved out of the driveway. The only things left to remember him were the staged family portraits where their smiles donβt reach their eyes and they almost always are wearing long sleeves, the tire marks were washed away within the hour with a pressure washer. Rapheal and Celes lost the only real parent they had when he left, and the only shield they had from the worst of it. Their father had no one to leech off their paycheck, so his drinking took a hard toll on their finances, which caused more fighting. More than what their mother could hide away with long sleeves and color theory makeup maneuvers, and it spilled over to the kids who couldnβt fight back. Morgan Doe was progressively becoming a meaner drunk and her mother a more controlling narcissist because while Agatha couldnβt fullly control her husband, she could control her kids. Especially when she could direct her husbandβs anger to them instead to punish them for not obeying her, not that she stopped him when he was irked by them being kids. Raphael was targeted more simply because he was louder, and he began to resent Celes for that.
Her treatment wasnβt better, but he was too young himself to really care other than the fact that he felt he was being unfairly punished. So he ended up taking it out on her. He became the first of bullies, with some gum so deeply imbedded into her hair, her father just said screw it and shaved her head while her mother held her down chastising her for getting the gum in her hair. They didnβt care that her twin brother did it, her mother only cared that she would have enough hair for picture day, not the first day. Since she was nerdy and bald, dressed in hand-me-downs with thick glasses perched on her nose, she was set up for the worst next few years of her lives.
Itβs sad that the few people that did kind of care about her were mandatory reporters, teachers loved using her as a buffer for the disruptive students and using her as an example for a perfect students. Doing no favors for her at home or at school. Since neither were her safe space she tried to find somewhere else, and what a perfect place than the beach where some of her most happiest memories with her family were made. Her wetsuit covered any bruises and her brother hated the sand. Sometimes she saw her classmates there, but they didnβt make fun of her while she was there. Some even smiled in her direction and gave a passing compliment when she rode a particularly good wave. Which gave her hope, a misleading hope, that had her following those same nice classmates like a puppy. Or, as she began to slowly figure out, their walking punch line. She was the butt of every joke and their lap dog, asked the same things youβd ask a friend for them to giggle about while they slid their homework her way to do.
Then when she had annoyed them enough with how persistently she tried to be like them, they moved on and left her behind. Rinse and repeat all throughout middle school, and into high school. No word from Castiel, and Rapheal threw himself into any sport that gave a good outlet to his growing anger. He did very well, scholarship and popularity well. And with eyes on him, they would also glance over to Celes, who was still fumbling every social encounter she had. Unable to find a group that liked her, though sometimes she naively believed she came close. Like when a girl who was in some of her AP classes ended up asking her out after months of talking. Her name was Stacy Greene, she was just as smart as her, in fact they were academic rivals. Stacy was brilliant, funny, gorgeous, and sweetβ Thoughtful enough to compare their relationship to the popular romance novels they read and discussed. She was also recently aviable, since her jock of a boyfriend broke up with her before homecoming to go with a cheerleader.
So Celes took her shot, and it workedβ mostly because it was a set up for the worst prank to be pulled on her. To his credit, the one kindness her brother gave her was that he tried to warn her. βStacy isnβt into youβ Sheβs setting you up.β Celes knewβ¦ She did. Raphael could see it in her eyes, and he watched as she denied it anyway. He watched as she left homecoming early with Stacy, hand-in-hand, and Stacyβs ex following shortly after. When he came home, his sister was busy typing away at her laptop with a split lip, a black eye, and a red sniffly nose. Her glasses on her face and her contact case in the trash. She couldnβt meet his eye and he just kept walking to his room without stopping.
When graduation came, she was valedictorian and he had a full-ride scholarship to TSU that their parents couldnβt deny him of like they had hers with MIT. But even if she couldnβt go to her dream school and be far away from this awful place, she could at least manage the closest college she could with dorms, since Raphael peaced out almost as soon as the graduation was over and she refused to stay in that house by herself.
Still Nerdy But With Better Hair And A Dorm Room
That was the plan and she was sticking to it. Though she didnβt have any help to move, she took what she could carry and jumped into early enrollment so she moved into her dorm. Got a job after plastering her face with makeup like her mother used to do so the last few bruises wouldnβt impair her interview. Was it the best? No, but it paid well and it was something she was good at, even if she had to deal with sexist assholes everyday she was manning the counter, and then annoying comments when she wasnβt from her coworkers. But life was better.
She was alone, but she wasnβt being hurt, and she was free to spend her life and money as she pleased. So she invested in herself, and her happiness. Which on paper sounds like the first steps of healing, only she was trying to find what was her happiness. Sure, she loved surfing and working with technology, but what really made her tick. She couldnβt say, and trying to find that out while she was flipping through personality traits and hobbies to keep people around her made it hard to identify where she began and her insecurity spawned interests ended. It was neurotic to be so at war with herself that it was no wonder that she began to find additional solace in mysteries she could solve and fact-checking conspiracy theories.
Explanation after explanation, her critical thinking skills flourishing as she nurtured herself in a stable environment, and she got better at interacting with her peers. Not a social butterfly by any means, but she was able to make herself at least seem like a cooler person than she is. Who knew being slightly edgy and sarcastic would actually be flattering to someone who has a high IQ and makes her social faux paus almost endearing because she would fit nicely into the tragic genius role? She did, lord knows she read enough books with a character that had the same premise. But unlike those characters, she doesnβt have the fan base that comes with it, and at this point she doesnβt even believe she would deserve it. Her impulsivity at an all time high would make an actual murder mystery falling into her lap the best kind of distraction.
Is This A Found Family Or A Group Of Assholes
Age and intellect are irrelevant to her position in the group, she was deemed the babyβ the one who could not be left to their own devices unless she was doing something involving technology or flexing her brain power, even then it would be best to keep an eye on her. Sheβs gullible, and almost tries too hard to have the group be happy with her. Itβs endearing and a little sad, but this kicked puppy has a mean bark that at times makes things worse. The ones that know her history know just how to manipulate her, and those that donβt barely have to try because she is already invested in trying to solve the mystery and the treasure.
She was simple like quantum physics.

Koda Grey is a mixed bag.
Outwardly, she's the stereotypical rich kid with little awareness for how the real world works. She's a social butterfly who likes to flit about and hear the latest gossip. She's a materialist who can spot a knockoff from the real thing with just a glance. While everyone else is busy just trying to survive, her priorities lie in maintaining a positive reputation among the elite and living life to the fullest. Her whole world is funded by and dictated by Daddy's money, and she has a difficult time taking "No" for an answer. She's also not afraid to use her family's status, or her own, to get what she wants when she wants it. Koda understands that there is much that she doesn't know thanks to her sheltered upbringing, and tries to remedy that through learning from the experiences of others. At times, she can come off as a bit of an airhead.
Of course, there's a few more layers to just being bubbly and rich. Koda knows her reputation, and her family's reputation, so she uses it to her advantage. Frequently, she'll play up the whole "Naive Trust Fund Kid" persona to get people to lower their guard. People love to talk, especially when it comes to complaints, worries and boasts, and she's happy to keep them talking. She's also willing to fill the pockets of those who are more reserved just for a little more information.
Koda is naturally curious and had been brought up to ask questions. She's more cautious than she lets on and frankly isn't in the habit of letting her mask slip. Money doesn't often attract genuine friends, so she has a difficult time trusting others. It's a given that, 9 times out of 10, a friendly face is just looking to gain something from her. And the moment that a thicker wallet appears to either to tempt or dissuade them, those faces will disappear without so much as a "goodbye." Her "rebellious streak" never truly ended, it just got covered up. Due to that, she's also incredibly stubborn and not all that opposed to hiding one or two things from the law should they come asking questions. Her loyalty is earned and must be mutually respected. Koda is a firm believer in the whole "eye for an eye" mentality, and is patient enough to take the other eye when it's least expected.

Early Life
Dakota was raised by parents with very similar, yet very different, philosophies. Both Frederick and Penelope Grey believed in earning your place through hard work, in meeting the right people, and in learning through experiences. For her mother, that meant doing your best and being proud of your progress in every thing you do. It meant forming relationships with people who would help you to improve and grow, and who's company you genuinely enjoyed. She wanted her daughter to have as many experiences as possible as a kid: from camping and learning how to ride a bike, to mixing all of the soaps together to make potions and going to school in dinosaur costumes instead of a uniform. For her father, it meant that every single interaction from the age of 3 forward was a possible connection to be exploited later in life. It meant using the family's yearly donations to the school to ensure her place in various competitions and to qualify her for awards better handed off to someone else. It meant stealing experiences and opportunities from others for a chance to get ahead in life. Any and all friends had to come from other influential families, because they had better connections than some kid who came from a family of drunks and custodians. It meant succeeding in everything she did, because the smallest mistake would make them the laughing stock of the town.
Unfortunately, her father's wishes often came before her mother's.
From a young age, Koda was conditioned for perfection. She was always enrolled in three too many extracurricular activities and expected to keep her grades up. She attended every boring event and party that her parents or their friends hosted. If she brought home anything less than an A, a tutor would be hired and would drill that subject into her head until her brain felt like mush. Clothes always needed to meet the latest fashions, her knowledge of technology always had to be up to date, she was always expected to keep up to date on current events and the actions of her peers. If anything couldn't be achieved through her own efforts, then her father would pass money through as many hands as needed to make it seem like she succeeded anyway.
Thanks to these expectations, Koda didn't end up with the best reputation among her peers. Her friends were all but handpicked by her father and took on the personalities of stereotypical Mean Girls as soon as they hit Junior High. While she didn't participate in the bullying, she was heavily associated with the terrible group. It didn't help that she never said anything to relieve anyone of their torment, and just kept her head down. Dakota Grey was the stuck up priss who thought that she was better than everyone else. She was too good for boys, but somehow managed to lure boyfriends away from a dozen other girls. She was the model ditz who didn't earn a single one of the awards that she had been given. Everyone knew that her father paid for everything. Everyone knew that it was her who stole opportunities away from them. She was a relentless gossip who would leak your darkest secret the second that she learned of it. But of course, since she was so perfect, none of the teachers ever caught on. She was a snake who either had all of the adults fooled, or her family was paying them to look away.
When she was 15, her mother finally gathered the courage and resources to divorce her father. Penelope had seen the stress that her daughter was under and how it was impacting her mental health. She had her own issues with Frederick, but the pressure on their child was the final straw. The divorce wasn't going to be messy or public. Having everyone talk about the ordeal would just make it harder for them to escape in the long run. Penelope hid the plans for divorce from everyone but her daughter. She promised Koda that while they waited for the legal process to finish, they'd move away and could start fresh.
The day after Penelope served her husband with the papers, her car was found in a ditch. It had been raining heavily that night and everyone, even the police and the coroner, seemed to agree that it was a freak accident. The rain made it difficult for her tires to grip the road and she went around a corner too fast. By the time the paramedics got there, it was too late.
Less than a month later, Koda had a mental breakdown. It was apparently so bad that she had to be sent out of state to live with relatives. After her mother's death, she would not return to Amaretta Key for a good number of years. Her father got the pity of his peers, as he had basically lost both his wife and only child in the span of a few weeks.

Koda has returned to Amaretta Key!
After gaining a degree in Business--or so she claims--she's come home to knock out some general ed courses so that she can pursue either her Master's or a degree in a new field entirely. She's calmed down a lot since her younger years and is much more level headed. Her motivations for returning home are half for the courses and half to help with the family "business" of sticking their noses in political matters. Her father wants to try to help grow Amaretta and improve it's economy, so he's looking to bring in investors to develop some of the land around the town. He wants to use the fishing tournament as an excuse to invite some important people to the town to discuss the possibility of tourism, or in opening a canning factory or two.

But no other word seems to fit, she can't necessarily say she's been mistreated, and abandoned feels to dramatic of a word. Ollie is pretty sure she was an accident, or at the very least, her mother didn't want her. Often Ollie had imagined her own birth, coming out of her mother and the doctor smiling, saying "It's a girl!" and attempting to hand her to sweet old Nancy Woodward. But instead of excitedly holding her baby in her arms, she turned away in disgust. Waving the baby away like it was a bad meal. It was a perfect replica of how she was treated as an adult. Her mother doing the bare-minimum. Making sure Ollie was dressed for school, and then turning away like she was nothing. Ollie had tried once, to get a rise out of her. She screamed and yelled and asked why she didn't love her. She was completely ignored.
Not much could be said for her father. She thinks he might have wanted her before she was born, even excited. There's a few remnants here and there, an old baby carriage he had built by hand, and a photo or two of him smiling while holding his mothers pregnant belly. But maybe having a kid wasn't what it was cracked up to be, because he very quickly became a complacent father you often see on TV. "I don't know, go ask your mom." "That's not my problem," that kind of thing. At least he didn't completely ignore Ollie, like her mother did. He gave her an allowance, and seemed to give more of a shit about her awful grades than if she ate for dinner. But to ask anything else from him would be like asking a cat to jump in water. All he did was wave Ollie away and scurry off into the distance.Ollie spent most of her childhood acting out in hopes of getting a rise from her parents, which of course, they couldn't have given two shits about. It wasn't until she started high school that she met Michael Jers, well, she already knew him, he ran one of the local mechanic shops. But during one boring after-school detention, she was sent to go help him in his shop as punishment. But strangely, enough, she kind of enjoyed it, and she liked Michael.halfway through it all
Michael had very quickly become like a father to her, though Ollie would never admit it. She had accepted that her parents didn't care about her. But there was something so final about vocally accepting that her father wasn't really a father. But regardless, he was important to her, she could admit that. If it weren't for him, she probably wouldn't have made it through high- school. With his help, Ollie found something she enjoyed, something she could spend her time on. It was through his guidance that Ollie decided she wanted to become a NASCAR mechanic, though she was very close to wanting to just be a racer herself. Though, if the opportunity arose she wouldn't turn it down.Despite her dreams, Ollie never really pursued it. She didn't have the resources to follow that dream, something that became even more clear when her parents cut her off completely after she turned 18. She stayed at some friends places for awhile, and even stayed at Michael's place as well. But everything felt heavy, too much. Was she ready for such a jump? She couldn't even afford it, all she would end up doing is put herself in debt, and likely flunk out of school.what happens next?
Eventually, with Michael's insistence, Ollie enrolled in college and moved into the dorms. Though even now, her grades are still not the best. No matter what, her attitude hadn't changed. She spent her time either working, racing, or out at parties. She knew she was sabotaging herself, but couldn't bring herself to stop. Every time she saw her tuition the weight on her shoulders grew. Every time Michael praised her work she felt like she didn't deserve it. Sometimes, it felt like she was using all her energy just to stay afloat, and she was about to drown at any moment, and not even Michael would manage to get her out in time.
