Quarantine 2040

He didn't know much about her, but he already had an idea about what kind of person she was. "We don't expect you to depend on us for food, and we'll try not to annoy you." He said in a promising way. "And thank you. You're an excellent fighter aswell. Maybe a little careless, but other than that..." He smiled and reached out his hand for a handshake. "Welcome to the team, Spikes."

He was a little sceptical. "Should i do this again? It's a mistake... I know it will turn south again, just like it did in my previous group.

Theft.

Betrayal.

Murder.

People are all the same. They'll do anything to save their own skin,

even if it means taking somebody else's life. Betraying somebody who trusted you.

But i'm just this kind of guy... I have to help others. I can't resist. I know i'll burn myself again. It might even get me killed this time... But i'm just too damn kind. I'm like a fly trying to escape a car through a closed window. I know it's pointless, but i just try again, and again, and again, hoping that it'll work this time."

He realized that he wasn't saying or doing anything and just stood there; thinking. He snapped out of it and smiled. "Sorry. I'm a daydreamer. Tell me when you're ready to go. Who knows, we might meet William again. If he's still alive, that is." He said adressing Julian and Spikes.

"Maybe it'll work out... Still, i can't trust so easily anymore. Not yet. But why did i trust Julian from the moment i saw him? Is it because he's only 15 years old? Because he was all alone? Because he had nothing to defend himself but a metal bar? "

No.

He reminded him of his little brother. He needed somebody he could help out and protect if he was in trouble. It gave him comfort.

"So. Are we ready to go?"

Spikes shook his hand, a snarky smile on her face. A million emotions seemed to pass through his face, and she had a hard time getting a read on him. Was he the type to up and leave when things got tough? He was a good fighter, sure, but would he risk his life to save that of a stranger? Or would he let the infected get them? Eventually he coughed, and she dropped her hand.

Skychild said:

Spikes nodded, not believing for a second that he had been daydreaming. Everyone had skeletons in their closets now. Even some as young as the kid with them, who Spikes still had yet to learn the name of. She might be travelling with these guys, but there was no way in Heaven or in Earth that she was going to trust them. She wouldn't even trust her own mother if she was travelling with them.

Skychild said:
"So. Are we ready to go?"
Spikes nodded, pocketing the sewing supplies and glancing at the kid when he agreed they should leave. That one doesn't say much, does he?

She was the first to head out, opening the door. "So are we headed to this high rise or what?"

Vespertide said:
"So are we headed to this high rise or what?"
"Can't wait, huh?" He said with a smile as he followed her outside. He looked behind him and watched Julian walking out aswell. Hopefully it wasn't too late... A high rise was one of the worst places to be at. Lots and lots of infected, everywhere you look. And that guy earlier went ahead on his own... He's probably a goner already. David knew he wouldn't be able to handle all these infected at once if things were to go south, so he had no choice but to hope that the others were going to watch his back while he did the same for them. If they weren't...

Worst case scenarios started rushing through his head. "Don't let things go south. No matter how much you help others, they're not going to appreciate that you risked your life for them. They'll leave you to die when they're afraid. They will. Trust me. That's how people are."

"No. Stop. Stop thinking about it. Everything is going to be fine. We won't find ourselves in such a situation..."

"Hey Julian, how far is it from here?" He asked in an attempt to distract himself. Now was not the time to think about that. They had to get there first.

He took a deep breath and inhaled the fresh air. One of the few good things about the apocalypse? No waste gas or smog. Not even a little bit.

"About 1 mile west. All goes well, we make it quick. Um, Spikes, can I borrow something better?" Julian walked out and saw a pretty clear horizon.

Spikes glanced at the kid, and turned her heads sideways at him. "What makes you think I have anything better?"

Though it was hard to read him, he looked like a teenage boy who couldn't wait to get his hands on some real weapons. But she had seen the way he acted. Ran straight through the infecteds, not coming back till they were all dead and gone and safety was once again reassured. She almost asked if he had actually fought before, but no one could run forever. Everyone had, at one point or another, had to stand their ground against the infecteds. Plus, her knives were special. Every single one of them had a story. All of them had saved her life at some point, even the sewing needle. The story made her smile inwardly; it was actually pretty funny, but only to her.

So was she going to give them to some kid? Absolutely not. These knives were her brothers and sisters; the only things she could always depend on.

"Ok just go to the high rise. I have nothing to defend myself. Other than a sharp metal bar. Get something for me."

Julian walked back to the shelter, punched the code in and went in it.

William threw the last zombie over the railings and watched it plummet to the ground below. When it hit the floor it looked like someone through a large watermelon and not something that used to be human. With the last of the zombies taken care of, he proceeded upwards and onwards to the top.

Spikes glanced at David with a What's his problem? look. Before she could say anything though, the kid went back into the shelter, the door shutting behind him. Spikes shut her mouth, and muttered, "Kids these days," under her breath. Seriously. All she asked was a question, and she wasn't getting a weapon for him, either. She wasn't his mother, and she didn't even know his name. If he wanted a better weapon, well, he could get one himself. She certainly wasn't going to do it for him.

She stretched her neck. "Let's get moving. I definitely don't want to be outside at nightfall."

David couldn't resist the urge to smile when Spikes gave him that look. He didn't say anything, he just grinned. Julian just wanted to help, and well... He's 15. He's a teenager. We all behaved like that during puberty. David wondered what Julian was going to carry with him once he walks back out. He looked at her again, and almost burst out laughing. That expression on her face was priceless. "He's still a kid, Spikes. Don't be pissed."

He crossed his arms and waited for him to walk back out, curious to know if he was going to find anything useful.

Vespertide said:

"Me neither. I hope he finds something quick." He let out a sigh and waited for the door to open.

"Boring in here. Wish I could be heard. Such idiots!" Julian yelled, kicking the steel wall. As he did, the panel fell off, revealing a bomb stash that extended for thousands of feet. "Huh?"

Julian ran to the hatch and opened it. "I've got bombs! Wait up!"

David was pretty perplexed when he saw Julian running back to them, packed with explosives. "My god, where did you find all these?!"

Come to think of it, they never explored the shelter thoroughly. Maybe he should have looked around instead of taking a nap... Eh, whatever. It's not like he could do anything about it now.

"I hope you know how to use these. And if you do, only use them when absolutely necessary, alright? They're loud as hell. The explosion will kill off many infected, but it will also attract many others afterwards."

He realized he was worrying too much about him again. "Geez, David. Calm down. This little guy knows what he's doing... probably..."

"Let's go already. Lead the way, Julian."

"Ok." Julian lead the way, and 30 minutes later, he was at the door. "Well, we're here!"

Laura

Laura hears the unfamiliar group by the door and runs down the stairs, running into a random guy.

( @RedZombieWolf that's you)

Spikes glanced behind her as the kid came running up, his arms full of explosives. Not recognizing him for a second, she unsheathed her swords and was in a battle stance before David spoke. She didn't appreciate his swearing, but she also didn't particularly care. Nowadays, church attendance had dropped to zero on account of the whole infected apocalypse. As she was sheathing her swords in the scabbards that criss crossed her back, she noted David's tone. Almost like an older brother, or a father. Spikes rolled her eyes, but at the same time, she couldn't help but admire that. In this world, not many cared for anyone but themselves.

Julian. When's the last time she met a Julian? A smile came to her face when she remembered Julian Dimerro, a self-proclaimed Mexican with only nine fingers. Man could shoot as well as a Wild West crook, and claimed to be taught by one. Her expression saddened when she thought of good ole Julian, because they were a good team, before... Well, before he got infected and she had to behead him. He was not going to become an Infected, and she gave him a proper Christian burial the next morning. What good mood she might have had was gone, because now whenever she looked at Julian, she remembered Dimerro's face, a solemn resignation, before she used her swords to cut off his head.

Spikes glanced around her. The high rise seemed stable, mostly. "Let's go," she growled, opening the door and finding the floor covered in thirty or forty infecteds. Immediately her swords were in her hands as she stepped through them, not bothering to try and wade her wade through. She reached the stairs before remembering she had team mates now. Great.

Signalling them to hurry up, Spikes began to ascend the stairs.

William was leaning against a wall and waiting to see if the others showed up, when suddenly a woman came down from the top of the stairs, "Well hello there miss. Where are you off to in such a hurry?"

William shrugged, but instead of leaving, he walked passed them and into the room they came from, "I'll leave when I wish to leave."

"Pathetic excuse for a human. Leave."

(( I'm a little confused. I'm just going to assume that you were roleplaying as Laura and William, without the other characters ))

He followed Spikes and Julian up the stairs, holding his weapon ready. It was dead silent in the building until he barely heard faint voices from above.

"Shh! Did you hear that?"

He listened intently and could make out a female and a male voice. The male voice sounded oddly familiar.

They walked up another level and entered the first room to the left, where the noises originated from. As they did, they bumped into...

..."William...? Wow. He actually made it here alive, on his own. I clearly underestimated him..."

Actually, he should have known. There were dead infected lying around everywhere.

"Didn't think i'd meet you again." He said as he looked past him, noticing that there was another person standing in the room. Who was she? Was it Julian's girlfriend?

Julian

As Julian walked up the steps, he noticed a familiar face. "I think I know you, but, I don't know. But here's a serious question, where are the weapons?"

Laura

"I won't tell you."
