INTRO
Yuki looked down at her wrist when she realized it was dark out. Dammit, mom's gonna kill me if she notices I've been gone this whole time. There was something different about tonight, though. A certain feeling swept through the breeze, ruffling her hair as she thought about what might be the quickest way home.
"I have lingered here too long..." she mutters under her breath, realizing that her errand has taken approximately triple as long as it should have. "This way." she follows the direction the breeze is blowing, quietly leaping to each rooftop.
Yuki is a courier. The type that is illegal in the X-12 district. Information is a forbidden commodity this far out of the city's core, and all the couriers knew it. Yuki's mother disapproved of her chosen profession, scolding her by saying things like "Why can't you have a respectable job? Help me run the cafe, that will keep you out of harm's way." Yuki is far from the type to have such a mundane existence. Not a day goes by that she can go without at least one adrenaline rush.
"There it is!" Yuki spots the train that would speed her home in a flash. She jumps for it and lands on the back platform of the train with cat-like grace. She spots some civilians on the train, staring out the back window at her as the train begins to depart the station. Yuki braces herself between the railing and the rear door of the train with her feet as the train picks up speed, upwards of 500 km/h.
In less than 5 minutes the train makes it's first stop, which happens to be about a 2 minute walk from Yuki's apartment, where she live with her mom. She dashes home and tries her best to sneak in the window of her bedroom, hoping her mother didn't know of her absence.
"You're out late!" a stern voice bellows from behind her as she closes the window.
"I had some things to take care of…" Yuki's face red with the embarrassment of being caught in the act.
"Did you lose your keys or something?" an unimpressed smirk crossed her mom’s face. "... Or do you always prefer to come and go through the window?" Yuki's mom folds her arms, expecting an answer.
"I uh…" Yuki stammered, "I forgot my watch and I thought it was later than it really was." she paused a moment, "... and I didn't want to wake you." she sighs, hoping that her excuse is more than adequate.
Yuki's mom gives her a stern look. It's quite obvious that she wasn't buying into what Yuki had tried to use as an excuse. She closed the door rather harshly as she left the room. "Don't forget you have to be up early tomorrow!" Yuki's mom bellowed up the stairs on her way down them.
Yuki took off her shirt and collapsed backwards on the bed, the cold softness feeling really good on her bare skin. Her ceiling fan was turning very slightly, likely from the window being open as she clambered through it. Thoughts about her next job raced through her head. Why was her next delivery so secretive? Why did she have to make 100% certain she was unseen when she went to pick it up? What was she going to do if her mom's plans went well into the evening? Climbing up into her bed, Yuki kicked off her socks, shoes and pants and slid under the blankets. It didn't take very much staring at the ceiling before she fell into a deep sleep.
