Battle with the Admin
Both Jay and Flint watched in silence as the scene unfolded before them, the crude appendage rising from the ground like some disembodied hand from the world beyond; a pristine premier ball clutched firmly in its ethereal grasp. Without saying so much as a word, the pair had already begun to feel their nerves tense as the garish scene continued; the serpentine form of Drakloak appearing amidst the flash of red light.
"Get ready" muttered Jay, talking aloud to those in close vicinity as he tried to calm the nerves. All things considering, it seemed pretty normal that he was feeling the heebie-jeebies standing before the ghost pokemon; the supernaturally cold air that had permeated the area around them causing his spine to tingle ever so slightly. Before getting the chance to launch the first attack; the Drakloak had taken the privilege, its tail glowing as its inner power began to grow.
"Dodge it!" shouted Jay, eyes focused on the oncoming attack as the adrenaline began to course through his veins; the excitement of battle gripping at his heart. Already his mind was beginning to race with various strategies and counters, factoring the limited knowledge he knew about their opponent before them as well as what he could deduce from what had already been revealed. Jay glanced down to his second Pokeball, a possible solution to their predicament nestled inside of it; though even that would be a risky bet.
Eyes darting down towards Flint, Jay watched as the simian pokemon leapt out of the way in time; coming to a stop several yards away from where he originally stood; beating his chest with both fists as he challenged the opponent before them.
"Any idea's Lili?!" called Jay, not once tearing his gaze away from the ongoing fight in front of them. "I'm all open right now, cause I've got nothing"
"I might have," Lilinoe replied as she warily eyed the ghostly drake. It was a pokemon she is unfamiliar with, but she can make a guess. Ghost-type based on how it hung weightlessly in the air, its movement through the air distorts it as if the air itself is unsure whether it is physically there or not. Dragon-type is a huge maybe, a lot of pokemon have the reptilian visage without the typing.
Her Salandit had dodged the first attack thanks to Jay's timely warning, not one to take an attack silently, she launched a ball of fire in retaliation. It wasn't as powerful as it should be with how quickly she had gotten it ready, nevertheless, it was merely one of many she used in the ensuing battle. Each fireball detonated, sending sparks of smaller ember in their wake.
There were many moves in Lilinoe's mind that Kini can use against the ghost. Sweet scent can slow it to allow for a hit or more time to dodge. Poison gas is always good to weaken their opponent and set up for their trump card. The rest of Kini's moves are normal ranged attack. "Kini needs to poison it," she replied after a moment, then added, "she can slow it too at the same time, make sure to get out of range."
“Poison huh?” muttered Jay inwardly as he glanced down towards Hendrix’s Pokeball; concerns raised regarding the Toxel’s motivation before quickly returning his attention to the fight before them. All the while Lili’s companion had taken the initiative; peppering the opposing pokemon from afar, whilst Flint remained rooted to his spot, unable to aid in the ranged combat yet keen to get up close and personal with the Drakloak.
“Flint… this is going to be like that time with the Ursaring all over again” shouted Jay, Flint’s beating of the chest slowing down ever so slightly as he recalled their time at Nimbos forest. “Keep your distance and wait for the right time to strike.”
Sighing the chimp complied.
“Ho, not bad.” Levi mused as the attack was dodged. He stuffed his hands in his coat pockets, watching pokemon and trainer alike. His focus centered on Salandit as she began hurling flame burst after flame burst. “Pokemon can have good instincts, balancing between who’s in command is important.”
“Dreee!” A small shriek cut through the air as the little Dreepy was knocked from its perch by one of the bursts. Dreepy scurried into a bank of powdery snow, peering out after a moment.
“Ah… perhaps I should have held off on the-” Levi’s musings were cut off by Drakloak’s enraged roar. Vex gave the Salandit a venomous glare before diving into the Admin’s shadow and vanishing. The very air seemed heavy with malice.
Lilinoe had allowed Kini to continue her assault as it worked well in keeping the ghost busy while she talked to Jay, but it ended the moment their opponent screeched in rage. "It is protective of the little one," she murmured. It brought out a little dark thought in the back of her mind for a moment. She never gave it a chance to form as she issued her own command.
Kini crouched low to the ground when her opponent vanished. Silence hung in the air as chill continued to intensify. She hissed, low, as her head darted this way and that, trying to find sign of her foe.
"Kini! Flush it out with Double Debuff!" Lilinoe shouted out, her order rang clear. She saw an opportunity and took it. She mustn't hesitate or her own fear will spring out again.
Ever since she encountered the admin, standing by his lonesome without a single apparent backup; it alarmed her something fierce. The chills, the second pokemon hiding in his shadow and the admin's utter lack of concern. This was not a battle where she could hide her trump card for the last moment.
Her lifelong partner knew what to do like always. Kini spewed forth pink smoke from indent on her back. She made much of it that her form was obscured within. Thick and cloyingly sweet. A scent that was not only attractive to pokemon, it lulled them into a trance. She didn't stop there as a tint of deadly dark particles mixed into the smoke, masked by the sweet scent.
Jay watched as Lili’s partner continued to assault the Drakloak, the reptilian pokemon spewing pink smoke from her back as they took the initiative and fought back. Meanwhile, Jay and Flint could not help but feel agitated at their current uselessness to the whole situation. On one end, Flint’s lack of ranged capabilities left him limited in his opportunities to attack. He’d either get in the way of Lili and Kini’s combination or simply be overpowered by the dragon pokemon.
For now, their only real option was to sit and wait. Wait for the right opportunity to attack.
As the Salandit scattered her attack, her shadow would start to twist and darken. Drakloak shot up, trying to slam her head into the other Pokémon’s chest and knock it skyward. She shook her head slightly in the heavily perfumed air, it would likely be a moment before they could tell if the poison set in or not.
Phantom Force
“You may as well follow up,” Levi called out, “mmm, why not dragon tail?”
Vex’s tail glowed a dark purple before lashing out at the Salandit a second time, looking to send her crashing into the cliffs beside Flint. While it wouldn’t knock her out, the blow would definitely leave her stunned for a few moments. “I suppose I should give you two a hint. Drakloak, what my little Vex is, are dragons reborn as ghosts.” He shrugged, focused more on the ground than the fight before him.
The dragon's attack was executed successfully, giving the sign that sweet scent won't affect it more than a slight distraction. "I should have known it won't be so easy," Lilinoe sighed. Here's hoping the poison set in at least or she could repeat it just to be sure if the ghost didn't show any sign of it.
"That is very nice of you," Lilinoe replied dryly. It was helpful in that neither fire nor poison would work very well.
Kini was still recovering from the attack, their strength and subsequent collision had been powerful enough to leave her reeling. Lilinoe estimated that she won't be able to another one or two of such an attack.
Lilinoe turned to Jay, "Jay?" Her words carried expectations. Where is that fire she had seen at the beginning?
“Fuck!” shouted Jay, clenching his fist as he watched on helplessly as Salandit took the brunt of the attack, the young reptilian pokemon sent flying backward into the cliff next to where Flint had been; the simian getting increasingly frustrated with his lack of action thus far in the fight. Whilst Jay appeared to lack the fire of battle, Flint surely made up for it with the glowing ember in his eyes, the fighter eager to step into the ring with a worthy adversary in Drakloak. Like David versus Goliath, it was clear that Flint held the belief that he could stand up to the behemoth before them and put up a fight if only his trainer would man up and give him the go-ahead.
Jay for all his ‘gung-ho’ during the build-up to this fight had fallen into the novice trap of ‘overthinking’ things, the boy attempting to deviate from what he was so confident in. Thinking, strategizing and being tactical were rarely tools he chose to employ, instead of being a straightforward and instinctual fighter, improvising as the battle progressed rather than relying on a set strategy. Clearly from the beginning, there was only one option for the pair and that was to get up close and personal with the Draconian pokemon before them.
“Flint, let’s do this!” shouted Jay, slapping either cheek as he refocused himself to the problem at hand, his change in demeanor resonating with Flint as the pokemon raised both hands in approval. “Get in close and watch out for its attacks.. Especially that tail!” Flint gave the thumbs up and began to charge forward. “Just like it was with that rampaging Ursaring, we are gonna stay low and strike!” Jay continued to shout, the confidence in his voice brushing away any signs of nerves he once had, Flint meanwhile angled his body forward and lowered his center of gravity as he closed in on Drakloak, steam already appearing to radiate off both its fists as he readied himself for what he knew was next.
“Don’t give it a chance to even breath! FIRE PUNCHES!” roared Jay,
Flint now closer to Drakloak had both fists fully engulfed in flames as he rushed forward.
“Ho, would seem someone finally regained their confidence,” Levi noted, still scanning the snow for something. “Well if it’s up close and personal he wants, why don’t you rush to meet him?”
Drakloak roared in agreement, still riled up from her Dreepy being hit. Her body glowed brightly for a moment, enveloped in blue light as she rushed in to meet Flint's attack head-on. Malice poured from the shroud.
Dragon Rush
“Ah, there you are!” Levi stooped over a pile of snow, eliciting an excited “Dree!” as the little Dreepy flew up into his sleeve for shelter.
“Full Power Flint!” commanded Jay, his eyes fixed upon the oncoming Drakloak; the blue glow of the dragon complementing the white snow of their surroundings. If it was a head-on collision that Levi wanted, then so be it. This was only ever going to be an up-close and personal sluggerfest, it was easier if the opponent came to them.
“Chim!” Flint replied, his voice audible over the noise of combat all around them. Almost instantly, the fire engulfing both his fist began to grow in size, spurned on by Flint’s ‘Iron Fist ability’, the orange flame rapidly transitioned into a fiery red blaze causing the surrounding snow to melt around them. Adrenaline coursing through the veins of both trainer and pokemon; neither of them could resist smiling as the heat of battle overwhelmed them.
“No mercy Flint! Aim for the face! A quick one-two!” roared Jay, Chimchar spewing flickers of flame as he too roared in unison. Collision was imminent.
Drakloak made no attempt to swerve away from the incoming blow, already intent on making sure her own tackle landed. The two pokemon clashed in an explosion of fire and draconic energy, Vex’s head snapping back in a snarl from the punch. A dark mist poured from her mouth, surrounding Flint and extinguishing the flames on his fists before the second punch could land. The now normal punch phased right through his opponent.
The loud explosion of both sound and light had caused Jay to flinch, his left arm rising to cover his gaze from the assault to his eyes, the resulting shockwave also causing his clothes to flutter against the rushing wind. It seemed that their power had been close to equal, the two pokemon clashing in their head-on challenge; Flint’s ability giving him a feasible chance against the Drakloak, though of course things were never that easy as the victory cry from Chimchar was soon cut off, a look of anguish spreading across his face as the fear of the unknown took grip of him. Just like Flint had access to ‘Iron Fist’, Drakloak too had access to its own ability.
Having never faced this kind of opponent before, their lack of knowledge on the opponent had left them rather vulnerable to surprises, surprises like the dark ominous mist that poured out of the mouth of the dragon pokemon; the apparently sentient aura circling the simian before fully engulfing it in its abyssal entirety, the dark smoke extinguishing the second flame that Chimchar had grown on his left fist. The fire gone, Chimchar and Jay could not help but feel the cold grasp of despair creeping up upon them.
Jay and Flint glanced over to their allies. Hopefully, they had bought enough time for Lili and Kini to recover and more importantly, allowed Akira to slip by unnoticed.
Jay had taken over which allowed Lilinoe to check up on her Salandit. She had originally planned to give support fire, but it ended up with Kini engaging Drakloak on her own. That was a tense situation for her as she wasn't sure whether Kini could present herself as enough threat to occupy Drakloak on her own. The pressure of what would happen if they failed weighed down on her mind. She didn't want to mess up.
"Are you alright?" asked Lilinoe in concern. "Sa!" Kini propped herself into crouching on her hind legs, still half-buried in the snow that had fallen along when she impacted the cliff. A crack was marring the cliff above them and snow had piled precariously far above. They were fighting a dragon in ice chasm. An idea bloomed in her mind. If I can use it offensively, but how?
The Salandit took a deep breath, then expelled fire from her back that instantly melted any snow in her vicinity. She won't be bowing out until she was knocked out.
"Good," Lilinoe nodded in response to Kini's desire to continue. A glance back toward how Jay's faring made her transfixed for a moment to the scene of Chimchar trading blows with the dragon. For a pokemon in its first evolution, Chimchar packed quite a punch. Maybe they won't need her half-baked idea, but just in case. "Listen. I may need you to draw Drakloak’s attention," she began. "See that crack?" she pointed upward. "I want you to make that Drakloak to physically attack that spot if the opportunity came up."
"For now, let's help them," Lilinoe would have Kini ran up toward the battle, while she returned to stand near her teammates, Jay. She was only halfway there when she witnessed Chimchar being engulfed in dark mist, smothering the pokemon's fire punch. What? she wasn't sure what happened as she caught only the tail end of it. Though from how Chimchar had appeared to have its fighting spirit extinguished along, it had lost use of it. "Kini!" she called, her tone of urgency made the Salandit run faster. Both Jay and his pokemon looked to her direction with the Drakloak free to attack. "Prepare to intercept!" A further order was given out.
“Fire Punch! Again!” commanded Jay, though his voice wavered this time as he failed to shake off the uneasy feeling that had gripped him. Unfortunately, his concerns were proven correct as the fire failed to materialize on either fist, an invisible force preventing Flint from controlling his innate affinity of fire. “Flint...! Come on! Fire Punch!” urged Jay, though the only reaction he received from Flint was the shake of his head and a worried expression.
“Lili!” called Jay, turning to face his battle partner. “I think that mist disabled Flint’s fire punch… keep an eye out for it” he advised, before turning to look at Hendrix’s Pokeball, not really eager to throw him into this battle. A dragon type was just a bit too much for the baby pokemon Toxel.
"That's.... quite a troublesome ability or move," Lilinoe replied. Regardless, they still needed to attack it.
Drakloak seemed to laugh as Flint tried in vain to reignite his fire punch. “You’d be correct,” Levi called, lightly scratching Dreepy’s chin. “Striking an opponent with a cursed body can be risky.” Though even he was slightly surprised to see the power come into play, the two of them usually had poor luck with it. “Let’s wrap this up, hm? Vex, dragon pulse.”
The dragon seemed content to comply, rearing her head back and loosing another beam of energy at Flint. A massive roar shook the chasm for an instant. Levi glanced over his shoulder in the direction it came from. Too deep and guttural for any pokemon he knew.
“Flint! Brace yourself!!” shouted Jay, knowing full well that dodging at this point was highly unlikely. Complying, Flint raised both arms in front of himself, bracing for the inevitable hit.
A loud bang sounded behind the admin, causing the dragon pulse to graze Flint instead of the direct hit it would have been. The artificial winds rapidly died down causing an eerie silence to rapidly take its place. “Oh, dear…” Levi looked over his shoulder at the smoking weather machine. Already mist was beginning to fill the chasm floor once again.
“Change of plan, Vex,” one of Levi’s earrings began to glow as he returned Drakloak to her Pokeball in a red beam. “You know, I was hoping to look for our dearly departed admin while I was here.” His shadow began to twist and writhe. “Wonder how many more I’ll need to keep an eye out for after today.”
His shadow started to cackle, arms of inky darkness coiling around the Admin’s body. Finally, the pokemon responsible emerged enough to be identified. Mega Gengar. “Maybe I’ll find you two as well? I hope not.” A short wave, “Ta-ta.”
Mega Gengar dragged Levi into his own shadow, the two vanishing altogether. The ghost’s laughter echoing all around the two trainers for a long moment before fading.
