I'm working on my character right now whose half-blind and has a Litten as his starter Pokemon if that is alright. If not, then I can come up with another Pokemon starter from the Kanto region where he is from. My plan for the reason he has a Litten instead of a Kanto starter is due to their being four other people in his year group who were getting Pokemon at the same time so Professor Oak had to get a couple of Pokemon from two other regions.

Litten is fine. You are allowed to chose any, be it a known starter or not, Pokemon for your adventure. Josephine has a Tropius, as an example, and she started in Kanto.

The Pokemon are not limited to their regions as in the games. All Pokemon are capable of being seen anywhere in the world in any region so long as the geography and climate are ripe for them to survive and thrive.

Okay thank you.

Just wanted to double check that it was okay, since my character prefers Poison-Type and Dark-Type Pokemon.

Cool.

There are a few things you can get rid of on Litten's part of your profile which include the following:

Ability, Nature, the part of learning "an egg move", weaknesses and resistances (they do not apply as they do in the games, and I will explain more on that in a moment). All of these can be axed from the profile as they are video game mechanics and not applicable to the RP. There are no "abilities", "natures", or "egg moves". Moves are moves, and any move can be learned so long as it fits with the Pokemon's anatomy and biology. If it couldn't realistically perform the technique, then it's not going to be allowed to use it in the RP. Simple as that.

Now, for the explanation about advantages and weaknesses, and what follows is quite long winded so I do apologize (but I like being ultra clear about things like this):

In this RP, Pokemon, being living things, do not experience the kind of "x2" or "1/2x" damage they do in the games. Instead, they experience what might be likened to an allergy or chemical reaction when in contact with a "superior" realistic element.

Fire to grass, for example. Josephine's Tropius will experience much harsher and more violent burns on its body if it were struck by a powerful fire-type attack than other non-grass types would. This is due to Tropius' body being very closely related to plants which are highly combustible and prone to burning due to their bodies being filled with chemicals which are naturally flammable. So for Tropius, fire is naturally deadly due to its biology being naturally vulnerable to fire and flame-focused elements in nature.

However, another type that Tropius is weak to in the games, but not so in the RP, is Flying. Flying types are just normal Pokemon, for the most part. Pidgey is a flying-normal type. Spearow is a flying-normal type. Starley is a flying-normal type. You get the gist.

Most flying moves are either physical (aerial ace) or involve a lot of wind (like whirlwind). Being struck by an aerial ace is no different than being struck by a really fast Tackle attack or Quick Attack. It would hurt not because of the Pokemon being a Flying type, but because of the speed and momentum of the Pokemon slamming into you. So Tropius in this RP has nothing to fear from Flying types. It can fly itself, after all.

Using Litten as an example, we'll talk about fire and water and why it's a similar story to grass and fire.

Litten, as a fire-type Pokemon, has a naturally very high core temperature and its body relies on maintaining this high core temperature to properly function. Fire sacs in its body which produce the flames need to be heated properly to conduct the chemical reaction which triggers the release of flames. The lower their temperature, the less these flame sacs function and the weaker its attacks are.

When Litten is hit with water, its core temperature drops dramatically. Not only does this slow his heart rate making energetic activity more difficult and potentially hazardous, but it also weakens its ability to produce a flame as mentioned before with the fire sacs. For fire types, a lowered internal core temperature means its fire sacs are being cooled and thus any flames they produce are much smaller and weaker than if they were healthy and dry with a higher temperature to help fuel the reactions properly.

So that's what's going on with respect to weaknesses in the RP. It's less about "type matching" and more about the question of "what realistically happens when one element comes into contact with another"?

For Litten, in the games it has the weaknesses you provided. Ground, Rock, and Water. But in this RP, Ground and Rock are just natural elements. Why doesn't fire work on them? They're non-flammable. Rocks and Ground (dirt and other soil-like elements) naturally do not store heat like other elements do. Thus, they have an EXTREMELY high combustion and melting points which is why natural Pokemon flames (which don't burn much hotter than a couple hundred degrees Celsius) don't seem to work on them very much. Their bodies have a naturally higher tolerance of higher temperatures, so fire type moves don't hurt them nearly as much as they do other Pokemon.

However, the same is true the other way around. Rocks are rocks. Yes, they'd hurt to be hit by. But Litten, despite not being able to do much to Rock-type Pokemon with his fire, is not going to react to a rock thrown at him or an Earthquake attack splitting the ground beneath him as if he was just struck by lightning or anything. The rocks would hurt and the earthquake would send him down into the newly opened gorge. But other than that, he'd be just fine. It would be more a shock than anything else. But he won't really be affected by those techniques any more so than he would being hit by Tackle or Body Slam or falling from whatever height the surface to bottom of the new earthquake gorge was.

Rock type attacks are purely physical. A Rock Throw from a large Rock type Pokemon would hurt like hell for ANYTHING hit by it. It's the weight of the rocks that does the damage, not the rock as an element. So Rock types are naturally hardy and hard-hitting. But they don't really "super affect" anything more than they do anything else. Getting hit by a rock sucks no matter what, but there's no "super effective" element to it.

Steel is in the same boat. Steel is heavy and would hurt anything that was hit by it. The weight does the damage, not the steel as an element.

Does all of this make sense? I know it was long winded, and again I apologize. It's my natural tendency to make sure things are well understood so everyone knows exactly what they're in for.

So, if I just remove "egg move" from Heat Wave, remove Nature, Ability, Type Weaknesses/Resistances and Immune To then Litten is good to go?

No, it makes sense and thank you for the long clarification. I knew it would overpower Grass naturally and be overwhelmed by water and possibly ice.

Okay, I do have a few things I'd like some clarification on.
1. How do abilities actually work then? Its it simply a more abstract sense of "Well a poison pokemon can make stronger poison when they grow stronger" Without any sort of stat or variance there's a lot of redundant moves (i.e. Bubble and Bubble beam are both just bubbles) What dictates what a pokemon can ACTUALLY do?
2. Despite there being no special items that increase stats, could you instead do something like implement special training regiments and diets to have a "____ that's faster than average". There were a few other thoughts in regards to "stats" (as an abstract concept) but that's the big one.
3. While not earning from battles in the traditional sense, would they be anything preventing somebody from placing wagers on matches? Even if it was considered a crime, I can't imagine it'd be much more enforceable than say "Poker night with the boys" in the real world (Which is to say, not at all. For that matter, the games typically feature many locations that are dedicated "Battle arenas" (Battle Tree, Royal Rumble, etc.) which seem like they would essentially be just that, fighting for prizes (Money in this case since items are basically non-existent.
4. Are there any major region specific "Laws" we would be dealing with? For example, in the games, you can usually fly or surf on your own pokemon if they are able, but this isn't the case in Alola where its specifically stated to be illegal to use anything other than a ride pager, (essentially requiring individual licenses for modes of travel. A drivers license doesn't qualify you to pilot a plane.)
5. The previous thread mentioned something in the ways of levels but it confused me a little when it began to compare it to the idea of age. A normal creature would eventually reach a point where its past its prime until it begins to decline at an exponential level. But on the flip side of that, I could imagine there are some traits that would be present in something like a pokemon that would only become stronger with age.
6. I can mostly wrap my mind around most of the types, but what's a ghost?

This is also a really good thing. I love having this realistic pokemon theme, but it does leave a lot of open ended possibilities. Considering you're the kind of person to point out when something doesn't fit the lore established, can you elaborate Cho? Thanks!

I also question how Fairy contributes to anything in the RP or the Pokemon world in general. ChoShadow ChoShadow

Heh thanks. It's the only thing I can ever find anime wise that gives me what I want in looks for creating characters. Just wish it gave full body image as well. Polyblank Polyblank

Enjoy posting!

As for Fairy types, I would say just remove it and play the RP as if Fairy was never founded. It's kind of a bland anti-Dragon deus-ex-machina anyway. I don't see why they added it.

6. I can mostly wrap my mind around most of the types, but what's a ghost?

1) Abilities with respect to "growth" are very much, like you mentioned, common sense advancement. As poison types grow older and more powerful, the poisons their bodies create and concentrate in their attacks becomes more potent. When fire types grow older and stronger, their flames burn hotter. When water types grow older and stronger, their bodies hold more water and can release it at greater pressure levels. Etc, etc.

2) Yes, you can have your character create training regimens and diets which focus on helping a Pokemon focus on a certain aspect of their battle prowess. High protein diets, like with humans, will yield greater physical strength and muscle growth results. Circuit training will increase their cardio making them tougher and more easily able to last through long winded battled. Etc, etc.

3) Technically there is nothing stopping a pair of Trainers from making a private wager. They just have to be careful about how they go about it. All of their funds are handled through the Pokedex, and if it detects an illegal transfer of funds or suspicious transfer activity it will alert local authorities to investigate the issue. So the best way to do battles while earning cash really is to compete in high profile events like competitions and public challenges where monetary prizes are at stake. There are plenty of them out there, and you're free to make those up for yourself to enjoy in your journey.

4) No, there are no laws which are region specific that would change the way you travel or enjoy your life as a Trainer.

5) Good question! Essentially, Pokemon will reach their physical prime during what for them is the beginning of the second full half of their expected life span. So let's say we have a Charmander, who's general life expectancy if it goes through all three forms (Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard) is roughly 25 years. By the time Charmander (likely already a Charizard) is around 12-13 years of age, it will have reached its physical prime. From there it's a slow downhill effect as it is with humans. And during their final full year of life, their health and fitness will deteriorate far more rapidly until they finally pass.

6) Another good question! Ghost Pokemon are still animals, but they are animals with the unique ability to activate what you might call "chameleon pigmentation" which is how they turn "invisible". They are still there. But their pigments, like a Chameleon, are able to change colors. The difference though is that Ghost Pokemon pigmentation is able to transform perfectly to suit the environment so it's impossible to see them with the naked eye. It's one of the reasons only other Ghosts and Psychic types are able to combat them more effectively. Dark Pokemon can hold their own, but otherwise they still rely on their eyes. Other Ghosts can see through the disguise while Psychic types can hone in on their brainwaves to find them.

You might consider this a stupid question, but where would Froakie be found in Kanto? ChoShadow ChoShadow

Froakie would most likely be found in swamps and/or tropical beach/forest regions where there is plenty of water and humidity. But that's just me.

For the most part I won't be too stingy on exactly where to find Pokemon so long as the environment is at least generally well suited to their presence, but if you're unsure of whether or not you'd find a given Pokemon at a particular locale, ask ahead.

My motivation to post in this RP has been diminishing greatly due to personal reasons.

I will not close the RP though. I am going to leave it open for you all to enjoy and continue posting in.

If my motivation comes back, I will return and continue with Josephine and Tomoya. But for now I'm taking a hiatus from this RP.

If any issues arise or you have any questions, I will still answer them for you. But I will not be participating in the IC posting for the time being.

Thank you!

Thank you for handling this in such a professional matter. I've seen lots of "moderators" of RP's close an RP because they were personally bored with it, regardless of the feeling of the members.

ChoShadow ChoShadow So am I free to make a charater or do you not want me because of the last post?

You can still make a character.

Just make sure it's in line with all the rules and guidelines of the RP. If you have questions, ask and I'll be here to answer them.

I'll check on the RP from time to time to see how you're all doing.
