Part I - The blood-dimmed tide

Garrett Bolton

Location: Tower of the Sun

Having reached the top of the stairs Garrett sets the girl he had picked up down, returning to holding Refara in both arms. As the healer began to heal people once more Garrett sets Refara next to him once more, in the hopes that he might do more to help her. In doing this he catches a glimpse of the kid who had called out and distracted Refara, his rage boiling up once more. However, before he can act on it the doors in front of them open to reveal a scene of death. Instinctivly realizing the danger Garrett steps protectively in front of his girlfriend, even as the corners of his mouth begin to curl upwards. A vampire, he hadn't fought one of them before and you could feel the twisted, bloodthirsty excitement radiating from him. It wasn't that he had stopped caring about Refara, as her safety was still his primary concern, it was just that he couldn't help but grow excited. After all, he wanted to know what sort of sound a vampire made as it broke, and how it felt.

Just as the door was opening, Erika felt herself being set down on the ground now. It was then that she could feel her heartbeat still racing quickly, finally in the momentary peace where there was only living people. She glanced behind her to see that Emiyn had walked ahead of the group, towards the door. She recognised what she was doing when she saw his hand was partially smeared with his own blood. Emiyn had once said told her when they were reading together on the history of Erminia,"You need the blood from the priestess or the royal family to enter." She looked once more back at the woman who was injured, and then at the man who had carried her and Erika all the way up. The door creaked open and there was a yell from ahead.

Emiyn's breath had stopped when the door opened, and there was no time to even gasp in seeing the abnormal amount of red. And his eyes grew round in horror at the sight of the priestess and the tall figure. "You!" he yelled, his eyes burning with horror and rage. "Let her go now!" It was the rare few moments where he would show himself in a more commanding and authoritative tone. From his side, the black falcon had dematerialised and changed into a longsword, the exact shape that he had practised with many afternoons. Seeing that the vampire hadn't even budged but merely smirked, his face darkened and took a step.

Only to have Erika grabbing him back by the shoulder, and shaking her head frantically.

"Oh. Is that what you want?" the vampire asked, in such a refined and calmed tone in the middle of all the blood on the floor. "Well, I have no more use for this wrench now. So... as you say." he said, his hand jerking out so quickly and the priestess choked out blood. Her body collapsed onto the floor as if she was a mere bag of bones. "Well then. My business is done here," he said, while sweeping his cloak, like a mere guest that was going to excuse himself from the party. He wasn't the least interested in engaging with the party that just arrived, despite how some of them were giving him looks of rage, malice and horror.

Marth scampered behind the other younger person, his wounds not all healed by the stone guy. "Here mistwer!" Marth grasped his hand and looked at the wound curiously. Not aware of the vampire, The kid put the man's bleeding hand in his fluffy golden hair to stanch the bleeding. "Pwease sit mistwer. Heart below cut." The kid said. His hair would feel like silky fur instead of hair and if Em moved his hand around, he'd notice two bumps on the top of the tyke's head...

Benton complete his ritual without interruption or issue leaving with a fresh dark crystal within him good for a few years and leaving Benton covered in blood as the harvesting process leaves behind a lot of blood and spare parts. Benton simply harvested for internal organs this time around. His lungs were beginning to give out of him so he would need to replace them soon. His intestines were already starts to rot so he really needed to replace those but he could push it off for a little bit while he investigated the tower. Walking in he couldn't feel the usual burning sensation of holy magic. Odd... in fact there was quite a few goblins in here.

The Goblins and Pixies shied away from Benton seemingly disturbed by his form and the amount of bloodlust coming off of him. So Benton walked up the stairs following the trail of human blood. It was so silent his foot steps echoed through the tower as he climbed.

Gautama sensed Benton's arrival was was visibly disturbed by it. The vampire didn't even seem to have such darkness in its heart when compared to Benton, " Guys be careful. Something else is coming up. And it seems much more malevolent than any goblin on pixie." Gautama warned scooting away from the stairs.

Erika, the observant one, had her grip loosened when she saw the shadows moving on the marble floor. Her very own grew taller, and seemed to have overlapped half its face and body over with Emiyn's. Even when he suddely bolted off towards the vampire, still with his materialized sword in hand.

Emiyn didn't even notice someone had grabbed onto his hand. "Hey, wait!" the boy yelled in seeing the murderer just leave out the window as transformed vampire bats. He ran forward, not caring whether there was any other danger, straight towards the priestess.

His heart was pounding and the blood seemed to be rushing in his ears. He knelt down right next to the high priestess, his hand now shaking to see whether she would still be breathing. He didn't even notice the entire time what was happening to the shadows on the marble floor.

Gautama docked as the vampire burst into bats and flew away from them all. Finding this all to be a bit too much Gautama looked around and saw the injured priestess and ran to her. Going a slide on the finely polished floors with his knees Gautama placed his hands her, cradling her head as he began trying to use his magic to heal her, but he wouldn't be able to us this magic to heal anything significant as his body was already far too waterfront the previous battles.

Benton finally made it up the stairs to be greeted by a group of.... He wasn't sure what they were so he was going to go with adventurers. His stitched up body covered by his clothing and the dark would hide his true nature from them he hoped and as he looked over at what they were all looking at he saw the wounded priestess and the monk trying to heal her while a boy simply held her uselessly. Recognizing her importance to the balance and the fight against corruption Benton decided to see if anything could be done and quickly walked up to them. The monk shied away from him but Benton ignored him as he examined the puncture wound through her abdomen. The healing magic had closed it a little but she was still bleeding heavily internally and she had already lost a lot of blood.... was she really salvageable?

Refara - The Doll-Looking Killer

Refara winced as Garrett shuffled her around to both arms, the new hold causing a soft sigh of happiness as her body wasn't painfully curled up and stretching the recent stitches. As Yuki called out she was there another wave of relief flooded her. Everyone else could die for all she cared just as long as her sister, her boyfriend and her sisters girlfriend were A-Ok.

Feeling Garrett place her onto the cold floor once more, the girl naturally put a hand protectively over the stitched wound to help stabilize it. Her gaze drifting to stare to Garrett's frame and an eyebrow lifting as he straightened and almost looked... tensed?... Excited? Her eyes drifting away to look to where his vision lay and spotting the Vampire dangling the Priestess with an arm. The girl's eyes widened before they snapped back to Garratt and once again she found herself pushing her legs in underneath her frame to come to a very slow and unsteady stand, legs shaking as her vision blurred again. She reached a hand out to rest against his shoulder, half for support and half to let him know she was right there.

"I'm not letting you attack that... thing... alone...if you attack him, I will to."

Glancing to his eyes with a weak little smile gracing her soft lips. Before they could do anything however the Vampire suddenly ran to the window and disappeared into a thousand bats as he escaped. Refara's eyes widened before she bellowed "Listen here you filthy Blood Sucker!!! We not good enough for you!!?!" Making a half sad pout then as he looked to Garrett. "Can't believe he just up and left.... what a coward..."

Ned fought with Jess against the goblins and pixies fighting them off. He had been hurt some but was healing up well. "We just need to hold them back." He said looking to Jess as he saw Lux fly away. 'I hope he knows what he's doing.' He thought as the goblins started to retreat. The pixies seem to just vanish as well making Ned wonder. "Well... It looks like we won. Right?" He said looking to Jess as he fell on his butt. He was tired, never having fought that much before. He smiled softly as he watched Jess. She fought so well, and he was impressed. 'Mother picked the right girl to talk to.' He thought as all the goblins left and it got quiet.

Garrett turned back towards Refara as she put her hand on his shoulder, hurriedly moving to support her as he noticed how unsteady she was. By the time he had looked back the vampire had just up and fucked off, to Garrett's great disappointment and annoyance. He looked back down at Refara, "Right? And just when I was about to go have some fun too..." Garrett likely would have gone to sit Refara down once more but it was at that moment that he finally noticed what was going on with their shadows. Now, Garrett was no magic-user and as such didn't know too much about how magic worked, but even so he was getting bad vibes off of this. "Oi, any magicy-types here? Know what the fuck is going on with the shadows?" As he spoke their shadows returned to normal, though Garrett's bad feeling remained. Something had happened and he didn't know what. He didn't like not knowing, especially when it might affect Refara.

At the very moment when the bats had scattered away, the monsters that had invaded the tower of the Sun stopped their attacks immediately. As if following their commanding officer, those who were still able to move about gave no more glance at the humans and exited out of the tower, heading towards the outskirts of Iafern. It was as if their only purpose was to kill the high priestess.

Emiyn's fingers couldn't stop shaking, as he slumped forward in despair. "Just stop..." he said tiredly, while watching the man (Gautama) trying to close her wounds in vain. He couldn't bear to face any longer, knowing that it would only be false hope. It was inevitable fate that the priestess herself had decided to accept. Her face seemed to look a lot more peaceful now that most of the external bleeding was stopping. Her eyes shifted over towards the group at the door, specifically at the young guard with white hair, Yuki. Drawing her last breath, she closed her eyes as if she was asleep.

This was what death was like. It turned, twisted and changed what was once someone that he knew of into someone lifeless. It was even more frightening than a doll. He didn't hear the squeal of a beast from above him, and his body jolted feeling the uncomfortable feeling of having his personal space invaded. On his hand, was the blue form of a small dragon. It was the worst time for another beast to appear. Having no heart to even look at it or fight it, he flung his hand outward to send it flying.

He sighed, walking towards the door again. It hurt just seeing her lying on the cold marble floor. Right now, he'd have to call for help to move her to somewhere else....before her funeral. There were many thoughts going on in his head, about what must be done, but the young prince couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by grief. "What?" he answered tiredly to Garrett while lowering his eyes to the floor. "I don't sense anything strange as of now." He then gave one look at the state that Refara was in, being supported by the man earlier. "She should rest... have you found an inn yet?"

Erika shifted uneasily, unsure of what to do. It was the feeling of when a friend was obviously dealing with a loss, that she can't empathize with. What was she supposed to say as the elder sister? She didn't hear the additional set of footsteps just when something blue whizzed towards her, and she opened both her palms. She looked down to see that it was a small dragon. "Oh..." she merely said, blinking a little at where it came from. She thought there were only pixies and goblins here. This one didn't seem like it could do much harm, so she merely bent down to put it onto the floor. It was then that she heard Gautama shuffle backwards from the cloaked figure. As a non-magic user, she knew nothing about whatever strange presence that the man had. One thing was for sure, she did not see him earlier.

"Who are you, mister?" she asked him, giving a brief glance at Gautama who seemed nervous.

Gautama scooted away from Benton as quickly as possible. Refusing to be in that thing's presence any longer Gautama left the tower quickly and made his way back to his forest. He was not ready to handle all the strife and pain that came with this journey. His compassion may be boundless but he cannot stand in the presence of Benton without feeling sick.

Benton ignored the monk as he quickly left and focused on the girl. The priestess was beyond saving and had already died. Maybe he could take her intestines later..... Benton quickly discarded that thought. The organs of a holy woman would probably do more harm than good.

" My name is Benton a pleasure to meet you. I am a passing doctor who happened to see what was happening and tried to help , but it seems I got here too late." Benton hastily wiped the blood from his gloved hand and offered it to this girl in greeting. "And who if I may ask are you?" Benton asked wondering if she could see his face in this darkness.

She was about to call and ask where Gautama was going, but he had darted out of the door so quickly she didn't have the chance. She turned back to the old man who had answered. "Mr Benton." she tilted her head a little. Nope, didn't sound like anyone famous. Then again, Erika didn't go to the doctor very often. "Yeah... perhaps... we all arrived a little late." she said, not really looking in the direction of where the priestess was lying down on the floor. Having a hand offered, she lifted hers. With her long sleeves, only the burnt marks on her palm could be seen as she gripped onto his hand slightly tightly to be polite. "I'm Erika. Nice to meet you." she said, specifically using his false surname. She let go of the hand rather quickly, before turning to the others. Right now was not the good time to be standing there and merely talking. Even if most of them had their wounds healed, they still needed rest for the night.

"I'm sure you guys must be tired after such a hard caught battle. If any of you are in need of shelter I humbly offer that you may stay In my home on the outskirts of town if you like. You won't have to worry about paying for anything. As hero's who saved our town I think it is the least I can do." Benton told everyone as he too approached them. Maybe he could isolate one of these adventurers and do an experiment or two.... adventurers are a rare commodity so this was a good chance to see how different they are physically and magically when compared to a normal human.

All of Yuki's hopes were absolutely crushed as the door to the Priestess opened. Despite the door undamaged and unopened it somehow didn't stop the demons from getting inside. The sight of the vampire holding the bloodied body of the priestess made the white haired girl freeze up in horror and shock. Her eyes fixed on the older woman as her body fell to the floor and the vampire left. She wanted more than anything to run forward to her side and help, but her legs wouldn't comply. She noticed the healer try to help her but she knew it was too late. No amount of healing could fix her broken mentor. Suddenly they locked eyes for a brief moment before the priestess finally passed away. As if a spell had been broken with her death Yuki finally found the strength to move her legs forward, the guard stumbling forward before falling to her knees in front of the body. Her warm hand reached out to take the bloody, cold hand of the older woman, regret and grief filling her mind. She couldn't help but think about how if she had been minutes faster this could've been prevented, or that she wasn't able to actually say goodbye, instead she stood there like a coward and watched her die. A few tears welled up in her eyes which was a rather rare occurrence for her, the white haired girl only cried when someone close died. Her eyes shut tightly and she sobbed quietly over her body.

(Ech I wasn't in it right now. Not a great death post rip.)

Marth didn't know what was happening. How could he? He was so young even in his slave time he hadn't encountered death. He scampered over to the crying girl and felt the cold of the other girl. "Brrr!" He exclaimed, hugging the girl. "Pwease dun cwy..." Marth sniffled. "You're making me cwy! Is it cause she coawld? I'll warm her up!" He whimpered, grabbing the cold lady's hand, blowing into it trying to warm it up. He hated seeing others cry. Within seconds he layed ontop of her, trying to use his body heat to warm her, feeling the cold leech into him like ivy tendrils. "See miss? I warm her up quickly i pwomise!" Marth said sadly, not knowing what to do. Death hadn't ever visited the small uneducated child and he had never been in a church or even had to fight. What was happening to everyone? Why were they sad? Why won't the lady get warmer and why is she so cold? He didn't know! But he wanted too so he could make them all happy again...

Jess looked at her shadow, blood dripping from a cut above her eye and her sword glowed blue and shrank to its normal dagger size. "It does, but there should be others who need our help." Her blue eyes were solemn, and she wiped the blood from her face with the back of her hand. "Lux knows what he's doing. I trust he'll come back."

It had reached late in the evening for all of Erminia. Within the streets of Roselea, there was an eerie silence in the streets, as a chilling atmosphere settled onto the frozen city. Within the west darker side, there was a large pillar at the deserted square.

Several bats had entered the quiet street intersection, just as there was a large shadow moving from the streets, and it glided swiftly through the air, until it descended down at a clearing within the very west of the city. At the centre of that there were black markings on the pavement, made with some black liquid: a magic circle simply laying there. Within the magic circle, a figure of the demon with three horns emerged from the large magic circle. This magic circle did not glow white as like the usual summoning, but had the glow of dark red.

The vampire that was at the tower of the sun earlier, emerged when the bats had accumulated and merged together. He bent his head down, not daring to look up at the figure that was much larger, and floating in the air. When the figure was a few feet away, he bent down to kneel over towards.

"Well, then, what news do you have for me today, Rossini?" A chilling voice said. It seemed to neither that of a man or of a woman's.

The vampire Rossini spoke about his assassination of the priestess, and the arrival of a group of people at the last moment. The mysterious figure was thoughtful for a moment. "I see...those would be the "heroes" of the prophecy?"

"Correct, Lord Gula*," the three-horned demon spoke up. Like Rossini he did not turn his head up to look at the face of Gula.

"There was one other thing..."Rossini began, and his voice was a little unsure in recounting about the strange occurrance of the shadows shifting and moving along the surface. Even the three-horned demon didn't seem to know, judging by the way he tapped his elbow with one clawed hand.

The large shadow shifted its position in the air. He turned about half a revolution. "Well then, their next move would be to come here. We should prepare for our guests..." he turned towards the demon. "Cider, I will talk with you later. Rossini, you have done well. Watch carefully for who enters the city." With no further notice, the place became quiet again as the mysterious figure of Gula* flew up the pillar and over the rooftop of the buildings.

*Gula is Latin for "Gluttony".

Three days later...

For the last three days the group had travelled from the Northern gate of Iafern towards here. Specifically, the group of people that found themselves near the tower and around it. There weren't many who were out of their homes, or an inn at the time when the Tower of the Sun was raided by the monsters. Immediately, the priests from the other monasteries had identified that the heroes of Erminia had gathered in Iafern.

Emiyn and Erika recalled how early they had risen up, and left with the group. Most of the city was barely awake, and the gathering of the adventurers in the prophecy was kept hidden. Within the city, there was an unspoken fear of how easily the monsters had invaded into the city, and many of the people were mourning for the priestess. They've travelled quite some distance, and was close to Roselea now. "I...I wish I could have gone to her funeral..." Emiyn said tiredly. Both he and his sister were currently refilling the water flasks they had in the middle of a temporary break. He was holding up better than he initially thought. Though he still was a little sullen, talking with Haruko and trying to know the other people for the last few days had helped with distracting him from brooding by himself.

Erika merely hummed in agreement. She wouldn't have liked it if she hadn't been able to see someone off herself. For her, when her mother had passed away, there was no sudden urgency to see to end the cloud of darkness and the monsters from appearing. The two stood up and walked back silently through the woods, towards the little clearing here some of their heavier belongings had been placed. One of them was a wagon of sorts. It contained mostly provisions, and a sleeping Marth . It was recently that, he took more notice of the odd peculiar features of the young boy. The cat ears, and the cat-like behaviour he had. Erika noticed the look in his eyes. "You think it's a curse, right?" she said. The two have read so many of the same books, and have so many similar discussions that at times they would be able to predict the logic of the other.

Emiyn nodded, but said nothing. He pointed towards the woods again. "I'll see if I can catch something before dinner." he said, changing the topic. Obviously trying to find something to keep him occupied again. His sister could only nod. "Alright. I'll see if I can ask the other mages around here about it." She waved to him as he disappeared back among the trees and then searched for the couple of people in mind. Perhaps Kurio or Isabella ?

Marth felt the cart halt and he lifted his head. He was still in his raggedy clothes but he didn't mind. "Where we nau...?" He ask groggily as he hopped out of the cart landing face first into the dirt. He got up, shaking his head, unable to remove the grime in his hair. His tiny stomach rumbled but he didn't seem to notice. Like he was all too used to the sound. He looked at the girl, awaiting an answer as he rubbed his eyes with tiny fists.

Benton had kept his distance from the group trying to keep his.... condition a secret from the others. Along the way he had to replace his intestines so he had distanced himself off from the others and proceeded to remove his intestines and put in the intestines he removed from one of the villagers and then sewed himself back up. He had a strange feeling he was being watched so maybe someone saw.

~Jess~

Jess ran back from ahead of the group. "The road's clear for a long while, but it might not remain that way for long. Do we set up camp here or do we keep going until we get somewhere more sheltered?" She said, calling out to the group.

Armyn had walked along behind the group, cautiously staying put of the way of everyone but Jess, her wing having healed already.

Jess walked up to Marth. "Not too far away from Rosalea, little guy. I promise that we'll be there by the latest at sunset tomorrow." The necklace hanging from her neck began to glow as she pulled water from the moisture in the air. She made a little ball in the air with it, pulling a small woven, watertight bowl out of her knapsack and then lowered the ball of water into it. "Wash your hair, it's looking pretty grimy." She said with a smile, handing the boy the Water bowl. She looked around the group for Ned.

Refara

The long white haired girl with the violet eyes was still sleeping. In fact she had rarely arisen for more than an hour or two over the past 3 days, sleeping in the very corner of the wagon, usually with her head nestled in Garrett's lap like a make-shift pillow. He only left her side to get water or food or sling an arm around her to shuffle her along. The stitches were practically not needed now and the exhaustion mostly due to a loss of blood. Despite everything that had happened Refara had mostly spent her waking moments smiling and laughing with Yuki about crazy antics as kids. She knew her sister felt guilty for the Priestess and in a way she also felt guilty for maybe delaying the group to the top of the tower. Wishing she had been quicker, more responsive towards the fight to allow them through faster. But her guilt was not the problem, nor the pain of her recovery. She was more focused on Yuki then herself, just as Garrett was focused in on her.

Rubbing her tired eyes the girl sat up with a yawn, one eye sliding open then the other as she peered to Garrett who as always was within a metre of her. "Mmm... Garry why are you here? Aren't you hungry or thirsty? Why don't you stretch your legs?" Her eyes still at odd angles as she took another yawn.

The past three days have been rough on Yuki, but very nice at the same time. She still felt guilty about the priestesses death despite positive reinforcement from her peers. During the day she tried to remain as positive as possible, but it was very hard. She didn't smile very much but never broke down in tears. The first few nights she got no sleep, bad dreams and feelings eating her up. Fortunately someone was there to help her, someone she didn't think would've. It wasn't her sister, or Garrett, or even Emiyn, but it was Senki. She stayed awake with Yuki and talked with her, trying to take her mind off of the bad things that kept her up. She never would've thought that such a perverted girl could be so caring. It really meant a lot to the guard, so much that she fell for her. Their relationship hasn't escalated to levels like Refara's and Garrett's though, more of a holding hands and cheek kissing thing. She really didn't want to go all out yet, especially with so many people in the carriage. It was now the present day, Yuki was in a much better mood and was leaning against Senki while her hand rested on top of hers. She was awake and looking down at her knees, not sure if she wanted to get up or not. The ride was at a short break and she was tempted to get up and walk around, but she also didn't want to wake up Senki. Look looking up a bit she saw that her sister was finally waking up, most likely for another hour or so. She waited for a few moments before speaking up. "Good morning Refara, or rather afternoon."

Garrett looked down as Refara stirred, glad that she was awake for a couple reasons. One was that he was simply glad that she was getting better, the other was that it gave him something to focus on rather than Yuki and Senki. He had nothing against the new couple, in fact he supported them, but even so he had been pointedly avoiding looking at them throughout the trip. True, they'd only been holding hands and similar tame things but that sort of stuff was for private time. You shouldn't just go showing that around to people. It was indecent. Thinking about this his face only got redder and redder as he remembered the various things that he and Refara had done. They were the real indecent ones weren't they? It wasn't like he wanted to be like that it was just that Refara, as much as he loved her, didn't understand the concept of modesty. What made it worse though is that he secretly enjoyed it a bit... not that he'd ever tell anyone. He didn't want to be labeled a pervert after all...

Due to this when Refara woke up he seized at the chance to focus on something else, that and he was truly concerned for her wellbeing. As she asked him if he needed anything Garrett looked away again, his face growing slightly red. "It's alright, I'm not hungry.
I was just worried about you. So I'm fine..." he replies, trailing off as his blush deepens.

The cute killer took another decidedly huge yawn and come to a kneel before Garrett, stretching her arms high into the sky as she arched her chest fully forward (and right into poor Garry's face), hearing a creak and groan and crack as a few vertebra clicked back into place. As her muscles seemed to soften, she noticed Garry's gaze drifting to the side, not realising it was shyness. Then she turned to Yuki as she addressed her. "Yello Sis... why so formal all the time? You really need to ta chill...." a half grin working in on her face before she started her usual habit of pinching, playing and absentmindedly yanking her shirt around like the very fibres of clothing annoyed her. Then hearing a trailing voice from Garrett, a absolutely chilling and devious smirk worked it's way onto her face as she swung a long leg around his thigh and in an instant had straddled his waist, looping her arms around his neck gently. She even tilted her head in a cute manner while her grin was anything but innocent. "Aww...Well-.. is there anything little reffy can help you with?" Even leaning her face in with lips all puckered.
