I was also thinking, since we're rather close in age, esp the 20-18 year olds couldve met in high school. And since most are ghostly, aside from demon chicks, it could be that they were a group of friends brought together by having that same abnormality.

Abby could the one that finds them, or is told to associate with them by the ghosties. She's social enough, and the youngest founder.
This is what I have collected so far... Did I miss anything?
Past Friendships:
@Killigrew Silas Eagleton - Met Abby and was forced into joining with her on some of her missions while they were in highschool.When he started college, him and Nathan began the PI.
@Jason R Nathan Leroy, Distant Leader - Was friend to Abby's older brother, and in the original group of PIs, before Abby's brother was killed and the other members quit. Is strictly business when it comes to the newer members of the group. Mostly just wants to be involved in the more serious cases.
@Auren Abigail “Abby” Tompson, Recruiter - Brother was one of the original founders, but died on one of the missions. Has since made it a point to try to carry on what he did. Also, he came back as a ghost and kinda asked her to do stuff before he "moved on." Usually is the one to find the new members, thanks to her little ghosts that tell her about others with relations to the strange.
They founded the PI. ( There's more here, but that'll be edited in later. I'm feeling rather lazy bout now.)

@Shadow Michaelis Mae Osbourne - Was once a physic that worked alone, and often rivaled the PIU. Then, when she took on a case and needed help, she called upon the PIU. After the case was over, she joined.
@Kaine Lauren Annette Fousenfaust, PIU Mascot - Was taken in by Leo, and joined the PIU with him.
@Karma200 Blythe Foster - Joined one year after it was founded. Was a former client. Leo saved her, so she now see's him as an older brother.
@Taqhart Leonid "Leo" Molchenko - Helped Silas change who he was into who he is. Is a strong role model. (possibly adopts Lauren and brings her to the PI for stable living situations?)

Well... maybe Leo suggested her for a mission that was all "nobody wants to do it because it seems tedious"... or, since she's the same age as Abby, Auri's character, maybe THEY'RE CHILDHOOD FRIENDS and that connection made it easier for her to join? besties

So to get him back, Jeanette and Jeanelle came to earth's dimension and tracked Lucas down.
When their initial plan to steal him away failed, they joined the group for easier access, but the longer they stayed, the stronger new friendships and ties between the other members became and soon they doubted ever betraying them.

No, I was thinking that Jean1 and Jean2 were already employed with the group and Lucas/Eraniel only heard stories about the sisters he never had. Or could vaguely remember.
