It's really not complicated, you'll get it.
You can start anywhere you want. I wouldn't recommend starting at a home though because it's a little less likely someone will just show up or whatever.
In the "Searching for people?" or w/e thread you can ask if anyone is looking for someone - or you can ask here.
People may join you without you asking, if you start in a fresh thread, but you can always join someone if you are afraid no one will RP with you.

Oh ... @The Fabulous Emerald, are you using classic Githyanki history and culture such as from the old Gary Gygax AD&D modules? Or are you using something heavily modified? (I heavily modified the minotaur and used something closer to the Kothians of Dragonlance, but taking a good deity as their patron.)
