Neon Valkyrie

She Who Is Called I Am
Used to be only criminals wore masks.

Fighting for justice, for what was right meant putting on a badge and trying your best not to have to shoot anyonre ... it didn't used to mean putting everything you care about in harm's way.

That was before things got so desperate, before things changed. Couldn't tell you when exactly it happened, what precisely caused it; Economy drying up, settling in the hands of the rich. Population boom, people stacked on top of one another in low-quality housing. Maybe we just forgot how to believe in those things that keep us decent when life gets hard. Whatever the case, things HAVE changed. Criminality is a way of life, it's our culture. Do what you can get away with, help only yourself, take what you can while you can, the rules only apply when you're being watched. A culture that makes charlatans and thugs of us all. The police couldn't cope. They were outnumbered a thousand to one, and half of them were having their palms greased, equipped with dated gear, upholding dated laws designed by the corrupt.

Then it happened; The Age of the Superhero, the anonymous vigilante. Some were brutal, some were civic-minded, most were feared, especially among the criminals they hunted. Some were individuals with a lifetime of skills to rely on, some were born with impossible abilities, some just had more willpower than sense. Whatever the case, there was a new force for justice in the streets, a light to push back the darkness. For a while it seemed like things were getting better. Every day there was a new story in the news, on the internet, images of masked or caped or armoured individuals dispensing justice where the law failed to, directed by some higher morality, or an insatiable thirst for vengeance.

Funny thing though, whether for better or for worse, the universe has a way of maintaining balance. Motion and stillness, heat and cold, light and darkness. You know the only difference between a Superhero and a Supervillain? Their motivations. I don't know how we forgot ... forgot that only the strongest people, given power, will use it for good. Only the few. And so just as the age of the Superhero began, so too did the age of the Supervillain. The world recoiled.

Now things are worse than ever before. Crime has flooded back into the streets as the battles of Gods and Demons rage overhead, letting the city crumble while deciding the fate of the world. Every day a new disaster, a new nemesis against the light, a new force for evil. The police protect only their own, while private security firms, little more than soldiers of fortune, protecting those who can buy security. Everyone else just suffers, living life between victimizations. The world is become a dark place ... will you take up the torch of Justice, hold it high, and brazenly cry; Come Get Some.

Woohoo, you made it through all of THAT, whatever that was. You still alright champ? Good to hear. So here's the more succinct version; I want to run a gritty superhero RP with however many people we can get. I'm hoping to keep it to like ... a post a day, 4 a week at least. Characters can be inspired by anything, dupes are allowed, but I expect you to keep characters fairly weak ... you're Kick-Ass ... or like, Luke Cage, not Superman. That being said, powers are allowed, with limitations, and the more powers you have, the weaker each one will be. Also, gritty means dark, violent, brooding, even a bit mature, but we will have nothing that breaks the ToS in this RP, y'hear?! I think that's all ... Interested?

I was thinking perhaps a guy inspired by old Western movies. A modern day cowboy with a pair of revolvers, perhaps able to even ricochet bullets off of surfaces?

Perfect aim sounds like an awesome power, and I would be fine with him being able to ricochet bullets off multiple surfaces.

Edit: Keep in mind, too, you can have powers, just not OPPs ... I'm not down with OPPs.

Oh no, I just meant feel free to expand on his powers or abilities if you want.

Nothing concrete yet. Other than perfect aim. And the Clint squint. Perhaps heightened reflexes? I'll have to put more thought into him as I think over what I want to do with him

Hopefully if we get others there can be some good chemistry going!

That would be great, we can only hope. I think it would help if I put some setting information down in print. I'm thinking it's 2054, the setting is a mega-city in the north-western US. Part of the government's urban expansion projects in the 2030s, the city encompasses a space three times larger than L.A. The city was booming for a few years, but problems began to appear within the first decade. While the downtown area is the peak of modern technology and construction, the quality of the buildings lessens as you move outward, and there are a good number of buildings at the edge of the city that have crumbled in earthquakes and super-storms, which are now a thing. 70% of the population technically live below the poverty line, and most of the city could be considered a third world country, with rolling brown-outs, failing public transit, rampant crime, etc. While there is marvellous new technology, it's only really available to the super rich and upper-middle class, with millionaires owning things like personal, one person Vtols, and the average rich person likely owning things like a self-driving car and a semi-holographic home entertainment system. There are sprawling slums, and most people are underpaid, even for trades and intellectual work ... I don't know, I want it to be kind of a modern feel, but I want characters to be able to rely on technology to give them powers without everyone having a mad scientist for an uncle. Any ideas/suggestions/criticisms?

:puff:I am totally interested, though I need to balance my roleplaying. I’m involved in quite a few at the moment. Though this sounds totally worth dropping a couple over!

Woohoo, and I mean, with 6-8 people, we won't move suuuuper quickly. What kinda character is brewing in your brain?

I really love characters that make up for disability with other abilities, so maybe a blind person who has heightened hearing and can use things like echolocation, or someone who lost a limb but used cybernetics to enhance themselves. I dunno, something like that~

Very Blade Runner-esque to me. Perhaps if people wish to use technology there can be special implants that can be surgically put into the body? Ones that boost brain activity, muscle growth and ise. Things like that. Very expensive for the good quality stuff, but Chinese knock-offs and poor backyard surgeons are available to the working man but hardly safe.

Perhaps specially made drugs are made? Or perhaps if you want to be a bit more technologically advanced there could be prosthetics like from Deus Ex. Most likely expensive, but knockoffs are available.

It appears we have some like-minded individuals here. I like the idea of high and low market cybernetics, super-pharmaceuticals, especially the poor backyard surgeons! And Panda, I like the concept!

CerpinTaxt CerpinTaxt I'm leaving it pretty open for now, but when we get enough players we'll discuss the dynamic we all want most, whether it be one central villain, or more a parade of small time thugs. I'm also thinking we should pass around the DMing wand and let people take turns running encounters as npcs, creating new enemies or replaying existing ones.

hey hey! I'm pretty interested in joining your roleplay, if you don't mind me being a newbie to these forums.

Reading through the premise i get the feel that it's going to be sorta Worm-esque in its powers and grittiness? Exactly how low-powered are the superheroes? I've got a character in mind who can scale walls via growth of gecko setae on their appendages, with slightly enhanced strength and reflexes. Would that be too much or can I go a little crazier with abilities?

Vesuvius Vesuvius Ooooh, Worm sounds terribly interesting. I'm tempted to let you be as spidery as you like, but lets say this; you get five points. A point can be used to give you a basic power or a skill, or you can use a point to strengthen a power (no real system, just meta).Like ... A single point could get you levitation, or let you stick yourself to a wall and move along slowly, or give you a vague sense of danger, or make you terribly stretchy if pulled. Two points in the same skills would make you able to fly at your running speed, or let you stick yourself and extra weight while moving a little faster, or give you a sense or danger and direction. Meanwhile five points, respectively, mean you can break the sound barrier and might have a peripheral effect like being able to swirl up a cyclone, or let you create an unbreakable bond between your skin and another surface with great speed and accuracy, or finally giving you combat precognition or the ability to foresee danger to yourself and others.

Ah, 'kay, thanks for the clarification! I might end up putting one point in strength and four in wall-climbing because being able to hang off a ceiling is awesome and honestly i wasn't aiming for a spidery power, more a gecko b/c geckos are cute and where i pulled gecko setae out of. or maybe some other power entirely if i can pull something equally versatile and dramatic and yet not overpowered out of a bag. count me down for the roleplay!

Whoops, sorry for assuming you were leaning toward spidery. I would say two points or more would let you navigate a ceiling. Welcome to the party!
