New York's Teen Refuge Center ((RP))

Nick softened. "Look, I don't want to throw you out, it would suck if I was the only one who's a legal adult here. I'll let you keep the cat, but you have to feed it through your own breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Now, go help her." Nicky stuffed his hands in his pockets and continued on his way.

Heather-

I let out a sigh as he walked away and glanced down at the little fur ball in my arms. "You better be the best dang cat anyone has ever had." I said to her like she could actually understand. I took her to my room where I kept all my supplies and tried to fix her leg and stitch her up.

Once in town, Nick sat outside an abandoned corner store. It was a freezing Sunday in February. He saw a man in a business suit dump his newspaper in the garbage can. Nicky leaped up and grabbed it. It was today's. Without looking at it, he hurried back to the Refuge. "Rose? I got a newspaper."

Heather-

I had managed to wrap up her leg and disinfect a few of the cuts. I picked her up again and put the top of her head. "Alright...now what to name a little thing like you?" I wondered aloud as I re-entered the kitchen. "Peanut!" I exclaimed, grabbing a piece of bacon off a plate. I didn't really care whose plate it was.

Mae looked hurt as Nick snapped at her. She hadn't meant anything by what she had said, just that they had the choice to leave. Mae and her sister hadn't but Ella didn't seem affected. She had just silently nodded after Nick had spoke and gave a short glance at Mae. The two blonde sisters stared each other down now. Mae's were brimming with tears, while Ella's were hard and concerned about Nick. Ella knew she shouldn't have the feelings she did about him, after all, she was fourteen. Mae turned away from her sister and faced the wall, careful to make sure no one cpuld see the salty years that slid down her pale face.

Ella sighed, Mae had always been the sensitive twin while Ella had always been the hard one. She began finishing breakfast after Nick had left. After everything was finally finished she hurried to set it all out. She left her sister alone knowing that a single word might set her off like it rarely did.

When he didn't hear a response from Rose, Nicky hid the newspaper in his room. He then went back to the kitchen. He piled some eggs and bacon onto a plate. "Good job with this bacon, Ella." He took a bite and wandered away. After he had finished, he went to find Heather. "Heather? How's the cat?"

Heather-

I was on the floor, petting her. "Oh...now he cares about my cat?" I mumbled to myself. I sighed and spoke. "She's fine...sitting quietly...not bothering anyone...so there no reason to kick anyone out." I said. I was only a tiny bit sarcastic so I added a small smile.

Nicky rolled his eyes and sat down next to Heather. "I want to apologize for being a jerk. You caught me at a bad time." Nick reached over to pet the cat. "Don't worry, I'm not gonna kick you or the cat out."

Heather-

I nodded and looked at him. "I get it...bad day." I said. Feelings weren't really my forte so I decided to change the subject. I looked down at the kitten. She was limping around in between us. "So help me out here." I started. "Peanut, Jazz or Poncho?" I asked. "For name of course."

"Definitely Peanut," Nick replied. "Did you eat yet? Breakfast is in the kitchen." Nicky petted the cat one more time before standing up. "Gotta go, Presidential duties await." He left the room, shutting the door behind him.

Heather-

I watched him leave. "Peanut it is then." I smiled, picking her up. "Are you hungry?" I asked her. I really had to stop talking to the cat... I made my way into the kitchen.

Rose sighed as she came in from her walk. Her feelings were drowning her and she had to get some fresh air to clear her thoughts. Walking in, she saw Nicky wandering around. Picking up the pace, she caught up to him. "Hey, sorry. Just went for a quick run, anything new?"

"Nope. I actually just got back from apologizing to a girl I threatened to kick out of the Refuge." He looked at Rose with a sheepish grin. He scratched his head. "Wanna look at it now?"

She chuckled. "Oh did you now?" She shook her head, "Well while we're on pur way to get it, You can tell all about the horrible thing she did that almost got her kicked out. "She joked.

Nicky laughed. "Okay. So after I snapped at the girl in the kitchen, I walked out. And this girl was staring at me with an injured cat in her arms. I asked where she found it and reminded her of the 'no pets without purpose' rule. She got sassy and I got really mad." Nick ran his hands through his hair, remembering.

Heather-

I was walking through the halls again, after putting Peanut in my room when I heard voices I stopped to listen for a moment and then rolled my eyes. "I was not sassy!" I snapped from behind them and then froze. Woops...that wasn;t supposed to be outloud.

Nicky froze. He was not expecting the voice behind him. "Hello, Heather." He nudged Rose, "This is her. Heather Morgan, our resident doctor."

Heather-

I walked over and and crossed my arms. "So glad you have wonderful things to say about me." I said, sarcastically.

"Oh Nicky..." she said trying not to laugh. "Over a simple cat, that's nothing worth getting mad about. Besides, would you really have put that injured cat back out on the-" She stopped talking as she felt Nicky nudge her. "Well hi there, Pleasure to meet you, Dr. Morgan." she said extending out her hand.

Heather-

I looked at her for a second and then shook her hand. "It's just Heather..." I mumbled. I wasn't a certified. There was no money for me to go to school. But I could bet I knew everything a real doctor did.

"Maybe you're right Rose. Just a rough time to catch me. And Heather, if you'd have let me finish, I was about to tell Rosy here how once I stopped being an ass, you actually smiled." Nicky smirked at the girls before backing away from Heather's death stare.

Heather-

I glared at him for a second longer and then uncrossed my arms. Now I was actually fighting a smile so I bit my lip. There was no harm in him thinking I was still mad
