Heather-

I blinked my eyes awake and sat up sometime in the early morning. Usually I slept in a little bit but I hadn't been sleeping well. I yawned and stretched before running a hand through my hair and roaming around to see who else was up.

Ella turned over on her lumpy mattress and stared out the window. She watched Nicky as he stood and gazed about before turning to the kitchen to begin breakfast. The fourteen year old sighed and sat up. She cpuld feel the metal support bars beneath the mattress press against her rear. Ella threw her legs over the side of the bed and set her small feet on the cold floor. She padded over to Mae's bed and stared down at her still sleeping sister. She chuckled and turned towards the bathroom to change. As she headed there she picked up her clothes and entered the smallish bathroom. She shut the door behind her and tucked a piece of hair that had come loose of her ponytail. She stared at her reflection in the dirty mirror. She lifted her chin and turned away to dress in one of the few items of nice clothing she had brought. It was Sunday and she figured she should still dress somewhat nicely. She turned back arpund and skulked at her reflection. She looked better in the red and white dress. She slipped on her shoes and headed for the kitchen.

Once she reached the kitchen she began helping Nicky. As she began another few pieces of bacon she decided to make conversation "So, did you hear the gunshots again last night?" she asked the older boy.

Rose gasped as she sat up quickly. She couldn't remember a single night she didn't wake up from a nightmare ever since she ran away from home. Trying not to make a scene, she rubbed her tires grey eyes and got up wordlessly, heading to the bathroom to brush her teeth and run a comb through her long straight hair.Slipping on a simple pair of jeans, she got out and headed towards the kitchen."Well, Morning!" she said, seeing the two already working on breakfast. She gave them a small smile as she she gazed down atthe already cooking food. Knowing she'd feel guilty if she didn't help, she started taking out some plates and set them down. "How may I be of assistance?"

Heather-

I heard voices in the kitchen and went in that direction. I walked in to everyone helping with breakfast. I hadn't even brushed my hair yet and they were all up and chipper? Granted I was usually the last one up anyway...today just happened to be a unusual one. I rubbed at my eyes and took one of the seats. I would have offered to help but I was still too tired. So I sat quietly and watched them.

Nicky turned to the fourteen year old beside him. "Hey, Ella." She was one of two girls he'd found, almost frozen to death in an alley. "I hear them every night. Every night I wonder, Mom? Dad?" He gave her a sad smile. She was one of those kicked out, whereas Nicky had run away. He turned to Rose. "Hey, can you start the eggs? Thanks." It was tough being one of the oldest here. The others looked for him to be a rock, their solid ground in such a shaky world.

"No problem," she said, grabbing a pan from nearby. Breaking four eggs onto the pan, she sprinkles some salt and just a bit of pepper on them. Sure she wasn't the best of cooks, but she had her ways. "I-is something wrong? I mean, other than the usual?" she said as she turned to Nicky, notching the sad smile on his face. Ever since joining the center as vice president, she had many tough responsibilities; she couldn't imagine what he was going through as president.

Nicky glanced at his VP. She was a tough girl, and he was glad. "Kinda homesick, you know? I know my family is better off with me here, but I still miss my little brother and sister." He walked over to help her with the eggs. "What is today, the thirteenth? My brother Danny turned sixteen last month and my sister Sammy's 11th birthday is in about a week."

Rose nodded as she have him a gentle pat on the shoulder. "They may be better of without you financially, but emotionally, they must be lacking a lot." she sighed as she flipped over an egg. She'd do anything to see her brothers and sister again, but after running away when they needed er the most, she couldn't bare to show her face to her father. She knew all these feeling would eventually eat her alive, but her tough image kept winning her over. "Look, if you remember the exact date of Sammy's Birthday, we could maybe send her a little something? That's if they still live at your old home." she said softly,

Heather-

I couldn't help but listen to their conversation. I mean, I was sitting right there. I sighed and stood. "At least your siblings are alive..." I muttered and walked out of the room, shaking my head.

Okay...so I was a little bitter and maybe that was a little rude. But I missed my brother and there was not even a chance I'd ever see him again because he was dead.

Nicky frowned after the girl who walked out. He was surprised, but not offended. Many kids here were having a tough time dealing. He bet that girl had some troubles before she came here. He shrugged and turned back to Rose. "I'd like to, but they don't. six months ago, I got a letter from my mother. My dad was taking them down to the coast to try and find something there. I do have a phone number though. Maybe we could find some change and I'll call from a payphone."

Rose sighed as she heard what the young girl had said. She thought about going after her, but remembered the times when she herself would storm out like that; the last thing she wanted to do was talk to anyone. Shaking her head slightly she turned back to Nicky. "Don't worry about a thing. Just focus on the phone number and what pay phone you'll use and leave the change to me." Rose smiled a bit, she had a few dollars saved up, but she wouldn't let Nick know that, knowing he wouldn't take it if he did.

"Rose, I'm a big boy. I can find fifteen cents." He joked, laughing. Secretly, he wondered where she would get money. He knew Rose was no thief, so she either had money saved up or she knew where people dropped a lot of money.

Heather-

I went for a walk to clear my head and stopped abruptly when I saw a kitten in the road. She was limping and dirty. I bit my lip and bent to pick her up, quickly assessing her wounds. I had acted as the groups doctor so I knew I could help the cat. I just didn't know if everyone would take too kindly to me bringing a stray cat with me. She snuggled her face into my arm and purred lightly. I couldn't just leave her there. I hesitated a second before taking her into my arms and walking back with her. I knew just what to do. But I would have to make sure her cuts wouldn't get infected first.

Mae had finally awoken and hurriedly gotten dressed in a black dress. It had been a tradition in her family to dress up on Sundays. She would continue it even if her own parents had kicked her out over a drinking game. She left her limp hair down and headed for the kitchen where she knew her sister would be. Mae slipped in through the back where Ella cpuldn't see her and as she walked past her twin she tugged the black ribbon frpm her hair.

Ella turned to face Mae a serious but silly expression on her face. Ella's hair had fallen down and lay around her shpulders. Mae giggled and slipped the ribbon through her thin fingers. She found teasing her sister highly amusing and when she was angry that made it even more comedic. Ella snatched the ribbon as she spoke "You know how I feel about my hair being down, Mae." Mae giggled again and sat on a nearby stool. Mae had never been a very good cook but she enjoyed chatting. As the conversation fell out she muttered under her soft breath "At least you had a choice."

She chuckled. "I never said you weren't, but I'll be offended if you don't let me help out this time." she shook her head and served the eggs on a couple of plates. "I'll get the money and that's settled. It'll be the least I could do." She gazed over at the other side of the kitchen. "Did Ella already finish with the Bacon?"

"What was that Mae?" Nick whirled on the young girl. "I chose that my dad lost the job that was keeping my younger siblings alive? I chose to have the whole country caught up in a depression? Just because I left my family doesn't mean I wanted to." Nicky almost never lost his temper anymore, but when he did it was because of stupid comments like that.

"I think so," he muttered to Rose. He wiped his hands off on a dish towel. "I'm going to town to see if I can find a newspaper or something." He walked out, not bothering to grab food.

Heather-

I walked in with the Kitten just as Nick seemed to be storming out. I blinked in confusion. Nick doesn't storm out...that was usually my job. I raised an eyebrow at him

Kaycee woke up, she walked to the kitchen and saw Nick storm out, she was puzzled she looked around the room and said "Good morning" with a smile

Nicky stopped when he saw Heather carrying a kitten. "Heather, where'd you find that? You know the rules..no pets unless they have a certain purpose." He sighed. Usually it was the younger kids bringing in pets.

Rose nOdded, opening her mouth to speak, but instead closed it, getting back to the food. "Well..." she said quietly, watching him leave. "Are you two girls hungry,?" she said, putting the plates on a nearby table. She felt a bit awkward with what had just happened, she grabbed an apple and leaned against the counter.

Heather-

I was in no mood. I was slightly annoyed already and I didn't feel like being talked down to by someone who was my age. He was the leader and I fully understood that. But today was an unusual day...maybe this is why I usually slept in...I was cranky in the morning. "Purpose?" I asked. "Well, gee, this one can fly!" I said, sarcastically, walking around him.

Nicky narrowed his eyes. He wasn't used to getting sassed. "Hold up, Heather. Let me just explain something to you. See this?" he gestured to the facility. "This exists through cooperation. Cooperation means following the rules. So either you knock this off and act civilized or I'll be forced to kick you out." Nicky hated reminding these people that he had the power to make them leave. But some people needed that reminder. And he would kick them out if he felt it was best for the community. "So are you going to tell me, or are you going to start packing?"

Heather-

I looked at him in surprise. Ouch... He would actually throw me out on the street? I unconsciously started to gently pet the kitten. It was comforting. "She's hurt Nick." I mumbled. "I couldn't just leave her there." I said. My voice started raising a bit in defense. "So...just let me nurse her back to heath and I'll let her go. She won't be in your hair at all...I promise." I said. And then, even though it killed me to say it, I mumbled a quiet little "please?"
