Futuristic NCQuest: Breaking Era

2) Go to second level.

Might be that someone else came through here, judging by destroyed defenses. And I'm more than ready to prove ourselves worthy.

(if you've read the story so far you'd know that this was already discussed and you're right on the money @Exiled Ace)

You walk out, and step onto the ramp, beginning to gently slide down it. It begins to turn to the left at an eventual ninety degrees, and you slow yourself near the end with an equally gentle spurt from your array of thrusters. The second level appears more visibly damaged; a spot of the ceiling is falling down, there's many dents in the walls that look Kanabo related, and you see a larger 'Squid' type dead on the ground, its primary reactor apparently being ripped out by this NC's fist. With all this data, it's obviously a close combat type of some sort... And you're in some very cramped quarters for an NC. Not a good combo.

Looking at the footprints, you can see that this unit's feet are large, square things with eight 'toes', two pointing in each direction. You've heard that some NC pilots think that having more surface area they can apply high-friction materials too can improve their swing; they can reasonably put more energy into each attack due to the fact they don't have to worry about slipping off their own feet due to the forces involved. Well, their NC's feet. Must be a dedicated melee fighter.

Aside, you see two doors; one to your left, and one to your right. The one to your left, apparently going to the 'center' of the underground complex judging by your map so far, appears to be malfunctioning and can't stay shut. Easily forced open. The one to your right is welded to stay shut. Now, did the AEG you've been sent to destroy do that, or was it like that when they got here...?

1) Go to the center of the facility.

2) Try to open the welded door.

3) Go back to the second or first level.

4) Write in something completely different

( @Windsock You know I read it all baby.)

1) It's time for some Weeaboo Fightan Magjik, Wraithknight edition!

We'll see how that pans out!

You go towards the door, and hold it open with your free hand while going inside. To the center...

You enter into a frankly gigantic, triangular room; you're sure that the rest of the base is effectively just a lining to this one room. You think it's nearly six hundred meters tall, and measures about two kilos across! A bit larger then the three elevators on the surface might've suggested, if they were each placed near one of the ends of this one room.

You're currently on a sort of balcony at the three-hundred meter mark of this room; looking closer at the walls, near the bottom, you can see a panel struggling to open. Eventually, it breaks through the debris that was obstructing it, and you see three seven-meter 'Squids' coming out to greet you! They maneuver their arms upwards, and begin gaining altitude.

The NC that was here before you must've placed that obstruction there to stem the tides, or it could've just been the result of time. Either way, old-world drones are coming for you; what should you do?

1) Let gravity do the work; jump off and crash into them. (Possible damage due to collision)

2) Start firing at them; Six rounds, rapid. (Six rounds)

3) You had a peek; save them for later and close the facility.

4) Launch one of your HEAP rockets. (One rocket)

2) Pew, pew, pew. I still want that NC booty I've been a-huntin' for.

We'll see if that happens.

You fire two shots at each 'Squid'; they're heavy models, but one to blast apart their arms, and another to finish them off should be enough. You fire your first two shots at the one in the lead, causing it to be blasted apart; slowing the advance of the other two. Firing four more rounds, you take out all of their arms and then finish them off at about the same time. Simple! They barely got a third of the way up, you feel almost proud of yourself. Of course, usually, you've heard they come in dozens at a time, usually... He must've killed off the majority.

The panel closes itself off; apparently having spent its munitions. It could launch some more; should you pacify it?

You look around while judging your options, and see another sort of 'balcony' near the bottom; at about the fifty-meter mark. An alternative entrance to the third level, possibly. What should you do?

1) Jump down and pacify the drone deployer; investigate the third level while you're at it.

2) Check out that welded door first.

3) Inspect your kills.

4) Write something else in.

You jump down, using a technique you've half-invented in your training to slow your descent. Grabbing the wall, you turn your back towards it and maximize your friction by placing both of your feet and your free hand on to the wall the balcony was placed at. Your original goal was to just see if it was possible during training... and to look cool. You then learned that it was actually a common trick that experienced NC pilots used when inside Burrows to save fuel and energy from using their boosters to slow their fall.

The instructor didn't give a shit and said you were just copying what you saw somebody else did once. Asshole.

Aside, you soon land next to the drone deployer and... just kick it closed, also using a short spurt from your plasma blade to weld it shut.

You boost back up again for a short period to the third-level balcony and see that the door's already open. That's usually either a really good or really bad sign. Walking through, you can see that the third level is much larger then the other two. The other two were probably just 'defensive' levels or something. The room you're currently in is sort of built on the wall of the room you just exited; nearly as tall and just about as wide, with a large series of walkways, stairs, and other things meant to assist people to move around, built to connect to what looks to be a series of barracks. All of this hangs above your head. Flying up there would break the tightly packed network, so you're limited to your right and left.

Looking to the left, you can see that the door is half-open already, and goes to rubble; that zone must've collapsed. To your right you see a turn to the next 'wall' of the central room, that also increases in size. Through the door, you can see more evidence of battle. It's filled with 'Squids' that were completely bashed into pieces, and the remains of a few other archetypes that you can't pin down.

Suddenly, you begin hearing something; a sort of static noise that gets slightly more and more clear as time begins to pass. You quickly realize it's your communications array picking up something and relaying it to you. Before a minute passes, you can begin making out Terrance's voice.

"Stat... Update... ested... thi... is... Rav...n... Hard... to... ch... you... some...ng... wrong...?"

You try to reply. "Raven, Sir, I'm deep within the facility, estimate a kilometer down. I've taken out their entire force on the surface and have prisoners. I have reason to believe an enemy NC is afoot, somewhere; do you copy?" Before he can respond, you hear something, ever so faintly. A smashing sound, and the tell-tale whistle of a thruster at low speeds, reverberated through the halls.

...An NC thruster. They're here.

1) Prepare an ambush.

2) Fight them head-on.

3) Look for a way out; fighting another NC so early in your career is too much of a risk.

4) Find a place to hide.

5) Write something in.

1) Prepare an Ambush, I really want this man. But I feel like he know's we're here, so prepare you gun/maybe rocket.

You ponder on how to best prepare your ambush, and after thinking about it, you believe it'd be best to go back to the large central room and poise yourself to blow apart the middle balcony (where they'd most likely enter) as soon as they step onto it. It'd certainly surprise the shit out of them, which is always a good plus. Rushing out to prepare your trap, you slide onto the first balcony, aim upwards, and wait. Crouched, you nonetheless increase your heat-signature by pre-heating all of your thrusters, ready to jump around the combat zone you've found yourself in like a mosquito armed with high-explosive rockets and slugs of tungsten.

Almost half a minute passes, and the whistle starts to turn into a grumble; then a roar, just like your own thrusters, yet louder, befitting the maximum-strength type of propulsion that a melee fighter would have. You think they reach the thick metal door, and...

It fucking explodes outwards with a single, gigantic strike, a dim titan of sheet metal and desperation vaults over the debris, onto the balcony, and you fire off two rockets; blasting the metal patio into slag and causing the makeshift Neural Combatant to start tumbling downwards like a drunken seagull. Its array of thrusters struggles to commit to the precise, high-speed movements that need to happen to correct itself.

On a 'public' radio channel, you can hear the pilot, a younger, sort-of-southern sounding meathead, spew out angrish as he plummets. "WHAT IN THE GOTDAMN-", before you give him something to really get pissed off about by shooting off six rounds, causing him to smack into the wall three-fourths of his way down. He coughs before pushing his way out with the help of his main weapon, the biggest pile driver you've ever seen, puncturing the wall to the point dirt and sand start to trickle through it. Surprisingly, he manages to land on his feet, but not very well, obviously straining his NC's durability before the fight's even started.

You snark at him to get him as riled up as possible. "Surprise, asshole!"

He brays at you like a bull seeing red. "You pencil-necked little shit!", he says while he retracts his pile-driver, preparing for combat. "I'll pound you into fucken scrap, you sneakin' bitch!"

While he talks, you start to analyze his NC. The base frame seems to be a stolen corporate model, a member of Denver-Vegas' family of heavy siege frames. It appears its left arm, replacing everything below the elbow with a gigantic pile-driver propelled by six hydraulic pistons, was scavenged from one of Volkov's melee types. Aside from its main weapon, its right hand is wielding some type of jerry-rigged automatic shotgun, and it has two micro-missile launchers flanking each side of its barrel-like head. Overall, it looks like a 'speedy glass-cannon' sort of type. 'glassy' for an NC, of course. Objectively, it looks much more durable compared to what you've fought up to this point, as NC's usually do...

You'd love to scan him some more, but his boosters are hot and he's already started to charge at you.

1) Start maneuvering around the arena; Keep-away is the key to surviving here! (Low ammo use; middling danger)

2) Fortune favors the bold! CHARGE! (High ammo use, EXTREME DANGER)

3) Start flying high; it's not like he can do aerial combat! (High ammo use, minimal danger)

4) Release the squids! (1 rocket, middling danger, unleashes third party, obviously)

5) Think on your feet!

But that's no fun. Who dares, wins. And a challenge is better than a shooting gallery in my opinion.

But we do have enough arms and firepower to beat this guy (presumably). He is a glass cannon, so you would only need to get 1 or 2 good hits on him for his ramshackle NC to crumple. And if we catch him off guard with a madcap rush, which he wouldn't expect, then we'll have a much higher chance of beating him than running away from the fight and leaving 1-2 bullets on his hide. And what do we say when we meet up with Raven and the others after we run?

"We went investigating on a bandit encampment, and starting fighting a looted NC, but we ran away WHEN WE HAD THE UPPER HAND."

Live a little.

1. I think we need to keep moving but not cheat the system. Moving around on the ground is not as cheap as flying and unleashing hell on him, but not as dangerous as going face to face with an NC that's made for it. We're not running away, we're using our advantages.

And thus I made it a three way tie! Better than a two way tie!

1) Oh fine. I like Soldier: 76 better than Pharah anyways. I still want to bash his face in after we're done.

I also just liked the idea of raining death from the skies and making the enemy even more frustrated. But option 1 works good too.

Cowardly to give the opponent no chance for a fight. It is only most honorable to BLOW THEM TO SMITHEREENS SO YOU CAN LET THE BLOOD SPATTER ACROSS YOUR FACE. That's what I use these Wraithknights for anyways.

I love it when I get my players arguing. So, we're going to dash around him on the ground-level? Gotcha.

You launch yourself to the left, tilting your body to the right and shooting off the four bullets left in your magazine, three impacting him dead-on in the chest. Armor plates made from old, beat-up cars, aerial vehicles, and main battle tanks is shot off easily enough, but the main frame refuses to crumple that easily. 'Spearfist' aggressively jinks to follow you, and you fire off two more rockets when he finishes his new trajectory, blowing a piece of his right leg's outer hull clean off.

You can hear him yelping in pain, and apparently laughing at how handily he's getting his ass handed to him. You impact the wall shoulder-first, and launch yourself once more, continuing your game of keep-away while peppering him with another five shots from your freshly-reloaded carbine. Even though you're in the lead, he's beginning to gain up on you, and he only needs to hit once...

Actually, it looks like he begins to remember he has weapons aside from his giant pike and launches a volley from his shotgun, firing a veritable storm of fist-sized pellets your way. Your own armor, properly made from composite plating worthy of a dreadnought, handily defends against it, but the sheer weight of the combined projectiles knocks you off course. You take a few seconds to re-orient yourself, not wanting to lose your balance and trip face-first during a bout of high-speed combat, giving him ample time to gain a certain amount of ground on you.

You've still got a nice layer of distance based protection, but he's certainly chewing through it...

1) You're doing good enough, considering; keep this up, he'll die before he gets to you. Stay calm. (Medium ammo expenditure, medium danger)

2) Finish him off with a coup de grâce! Blade straight to the heart! (EXTREME DANGER)

3) If he trips you again you're screwed; start flying, spray and pray. (High ammo expenditure, minimal danger)

4) Fuck it, just go with the flow.

2) Fortune favors the bold. The red in EXTREME DANGER is just the blood of our enemies. Finish him honorably.

IT'S A FAT ONE

The best defense is a good offense... You decide to end it there and then. You point your plasma-gauntleted hand towards Spearfist, and, with a fire boiling in your heart, ignite your plasma blade while rushing towards him, screaming all the way. "LET'S FINISH THIS!", you let out, with the force of a raging inferno. He responds in kind, "NOW YOU'RE SPEAKING MY LANGUAGE!", charging at you just as you are to him.

You swing your plasma blade to the right, then back to the left, and aim it to disembowel him in one strike. He preps his own pile driver more simply; couching it at hips hip like a spear, aiming nowhere in particular aside from in your direction. Rushing at each other like an unstoppable force and another unstoppable force, you instinctively clench your asshole seconds away from impact. With acceleration comparable to a rocket, you both almost break the sound barrier as you crash into the other with the force of two freight trains full of explosives.

KLRRRRRRNK

As an unbearable amount of pain washes over you, you're not sure if you've made the right decision. Locked into your position, you stare at him in both expectation and dread. The entire right side of your torso falls off, bringing your carbine arm with it, and causes you to slurch forwards. You force yourself to move through the pain, and look again to your opponent.

The top half of his body slides off of his legs, and you can hear him barely manage to mutter "Damn... You..." as his torso smashes into the ground, bringing his pile-driver with it. He lands cockpit first, crumpling it like a piece of paper with the weight of everything else, and the entire unit struggles to stay alive, before failing entirely and finding a certain rest, broken in half.

You breath out a sigh of relief, and clutch onto your right side, feeling coolant drip out and watching as electrical arcs dance across damaged power couplings. Your NC begins to compensate, and the pain eventually normalizes to at least be bearable. You grab your right arm and sling it over your left shoulder, making sure not to obstruct the normal operation of your rocket launcher.

While boosting upwards, towards the remains of the second balcony, you laugh.

"Heheh... 'Surprise, Asshole'... heheheheh...", you let out, the laughter sort of helping with the simulated pain of having a good fourth or third of your body ripped off in a single blow.

As you land onto the door frame, you grunt at the mild pain of landing, as it exacerbates the consistent agony you're currently feeling. You power through, and, wanting to get this over with, forget everything and just go to the elevator. As you get to the door, it automatically opens, and you jaunt through it, happy to have your trial finished with almost assuredly flying colors. Even as damaged as you are, the fact you took out an enemy NC during your first operation is severely commendable, and more then makes up for it.

As you step onto the elevator, you look back with a pained smile, and nod.

The elevator moves, and you look back over your own memory and the recordings of the fight. You nearly shit your pants.

He didn't have the Kanabo...

But... it wasn't still in the door frame... You didn't see it on your way back, either... That means...

As the elevator approaches the surface, you nearly fry your sensors looking around in a massive panic, your plasma-blade hot and your rocket ready to fire at anything that moves. You receive another radio message.

"I see you took out my compatriot.", an older, eastern-accented voice tells you, in an assured, amused tone. "You're quite strong, but also quite dim. You need to make sure to remember the little details like that before you commit to anything so risky as your little stunt.", the man tells you, and you see another fucking Neural Combatant, a proper one at that, come out from the sand storm, right in front of you.

"You know, I'm really not sure what to do with you... ", he continues, while you look over his unit. It climbs over the makeshift prison you built earlier, and you see it's a four-legged, spider-like model, with four thick legs supporting a broad, deep chest, a huge sniper rifle peeking from behind its torso, a carbine in its left hand, and the Kanabo you saw earlier, resting on its right shoulder. "Leo, is it?"

"...Yeah."

"It's lovely to meet the fresh meat, isn't it? Ah, well, anyway... I'm really not sure what to do with you.", he tells you, almost like a friend. "On the one hand, you sure made a fool out of me today. Can't just let anyone do that, you know? Of course you do. Oh, but on the other... I can already tell you've got the same spark people like me had, long, long ago. Not everyone has it.", he mumbles something before continuing.

"I'm not one to cultivate and manipulate certain traits in others, but can you blame an old man who wants to see the same things he saw in himself, once upon a time?"

"...What the fuck are you saying, old man? Is that a threat? Just get done with it!", you yell at him, the embers of a single-stroke battle still affecting you.

He laughs in your face.

Calming down, he simply asks, "Just promise me you'll get stronger, won't you boy?"

"What?"

"Promise me... a good fight."

"...I don't get it."

"I'd rather burn out then fade away. I'm not one to sit on my ass and wait to go senile. I've tried disciples, but as you've seen... I'm no teacher."

You think you're realizing the deal he's given you.

"You'll get strong, and truly continue my legacy, if only in part. That's something nice, right? Who wouldn't want to be the one who slays this remnant of a bygone time? It'd certainly make you a feared man..."

"Who are you?"

"The man who was once known as Rank Four: Orochi. It really doesn't matter; do you accept my terms?"

This is one hell of a strange situation... What do you do?

1) ...You're in no position to disagree. Accept his terms.
