In coordinated movement, Akihiko, Saori, and Shura acted on order and instinct. Still unfamiliar with their allies’ abilities, each had to rely on their own ability and trust in that of their squadmates. Perhaps against smarter and more veteran enemies, the genin would have been challenged to a far greater degree. Large and deadly as the pair of giant spiders might be to regular folk, trained shinobi stood a greater chance—especially in a small group. Further up the road, explosions, clinking metal, and rageful shouting picked up, as if the signs of danger Asuma Shimura wanted to avoid had only been a prelude.
Akihiko’s ink spears soared through the air; the spider reared back at the last second, preparing to shoot more webbing. All four of the spears sunk into the massive arachnid’s abdomen, the spider stridulating in horrific pain. The young genin disappeared in a fluid cloud, teleporting behind the spider to attack again. Its potential prey bringing himself to it, the spider went to shoot another massive blot of web, almost too close to dodge as Akihiko prepared a follow-up attack. Right on time, Saori’s rocky projectiles clashed with the spider, delaying its attack long enough for Akihiko to set off his explosive attack—successfully crippling the arachnid’s legs.
Severely wounded and further enraged, the spider would release its web attack at Akihiko. As it did, Shura’s wind-chakra boosted shuriken sunk into its head and cleaved through its cephalothorax, through its brain, getting caught internally, somewhere along its digestive tract. The spider fell dead from the tree, not fast enough to fend off dangerous attacks from three different directions. Down below on the ground, Saori would notice the agitated nature of the spiders—even large arachnids weren’t the type to make a direct, blind assault. These spiders weren’t being controlled, but there was some level of influence maybe trying to direct them to act in aggression.
As the others took out their spider, Sashi and Asuma fought the other spider in tandem. Free from the webs, Sashi slinged himself about using a slimed up kunai, performing another jutsu that shot burbling bubbles of his unique slime ability at the giant spider. It tried to drop down out of the way on its webbing, but the chunin Shimura cut off its escape with a flurry of smaller shuriken—still holding onto the larger fuma he’d summoned from his back. Trying to skitter to the underside of the branch it had landed on to avoid Asuma’s projectiles, the spider’s long legs set off the chain explosion of Sashi’s slime bubbles. Though not blinded by the exploding slime, the second spider found its legs crippled much in the same fashion as the one Akihiko, Saori, and Shura fought.
Deeply wounded and stuck in place, the slime an unusual obstacle for the arachnid, completely different from the stickiness of its own webbing. It shot a web out toward another tree, hoping it pry itself free. Before it could try, though, Asuma’s massive fuma shuriken thunk’d deep into the spider’s cephalothorax.
“Good move there, Gekiyaku,” Asuma said in a quiet, quick appraisal. He held back a smirk at the genin’s goofy puns, instead scoffing as he played cool, “but you only get one bad quip for every good move.”
As he spoke, Asuma lunged forward, kicking out with chakra concentrated in his leading foot. He collided with the space between the shuriken’s jutting blades, his boot pushing the fuma shuriken through the dying spider’s body, decapitating it completely. The shuriken lodged itself in the tree branch near Sashi’s slime, Asuma landing softly beside the summoned weapon.
“Everybody good?” Asuma asked, pleased with the efficiency of the battle. “I think—”
Tktktktktktktktktktktk—the quick, tapping legs of approaching insects approached, again from between the Konoha shinobi and the raging battle off in the distance. Way more agitated bugs were on their way, some smaller than the now-dead spiders, others even bigger. Asuma sighed, motioning off to the south where they were meant to be heading.
“I think we need to just get the hell out of here,” he said, getting back to the task at hand, “this is just a distraction. Get going—now! I’ll hold up the rear for now!”
Asuma prepared himself for the attacking insects, waving the rest of his team along.

The moment of shock and confusion not far from Konohagakure seemed to die down. Sojin managed to subdue the swinging blade of the samurai guard stuck to the outside of the carriage; the second samurai’s chakra sawblade enhancement around his wakizashi managed to cut through the sticky slime, but it did help slow the attack enough to assist Hinageshi’s quick exit via her body flicker jutsu. A quiet fell over the group for just a moment, long enough to hear Lady Eria’s panicked breathing slow and calm as she realized that the situation wasn’t as drastic as it seemed.
“Don’t talk down to me, child.” The annoyed guard growled at Kaito, frustrated as he tried to unstick himself from the carriage.
“Shut up, now.” Captain Io commanded his own man, dropping the still-dazed Gyaru back into the dirt, face first. He walked past Sota and Takumi, waving off his own men. “You’ve made fools of yourselves, and me as your leader. Let the shinobi do what they have to do. And for the confusion—we’re sorry, shinobi of Konohagakure.”
After bowing apologetically, Io looked at Sota as the young ninja held out a sealed scroll to Sojin. Eria’s guard captain’s eyes followed the chunin Gekiyaku, his face betraying that he expected to be debriefed on whatever the message said. Embarrassed by his soldiers’ hair trigger attack, Io tried to respect the shinobi transfer of information. Still, everybody knew who bankrolled the Leaf ninja.
“Can we just…move on from this?” Lady Eria asked, looking up and out of the carriage at the scene wrapping up. “This isn’t what any of us expected, I'm sure, but accidents can happen—right? Let’s just get to Kashio village.”
Creaking armor sounded, rolling over dirt and stone on the ground as Gyaru returned to consciousness. He leaned up, looking around with a stunned face.
“Did I do good?” He asked sheepishly. With an almost impressive overconfidence, his eyes found Hinageshi and - not knowing she’d dropped him with a single pebble - gave her a proud thumbs-up. Already tired and frustrated, Captain Io groaned.
