Active Mercenaries Harassing This Village?!

One Thousand Club
Hello, everyone, this RP is set in the world of Isekai Hell; you can find information about the world here.

This RP follows several characters as Aurae has settled into her role as Mayor of Lanstrich a small village in Ryke with a set of unfortnate events. Previously the former mayor was paying off mercenaries to keep the village safe and they quickly overstayed their welcome. The former mayor lost the election and the village has returned to some normalcy however travelers have mentioned armed men harassing people.

The village of Lanstrich is nestled into the north part of Ryke, which was home to a small forest and where the rest stop village was situated. Many merchants and various travelers going north to the Beastmen Republic often stopped here for a few days before continuing on with their journey. However, the village recently received some disturbing news, armed men have been seen on the outskirts of the village, though to what end has yet to be seen. The merchants have been getting uneasy as many of them who travel for a living are concerned with their wares potentially at risk. The word around the town was the mercenaries that had been hired had been fired from their former employer and could be looking for revenge if it is indeed the same individuals.

Aurae was in the village hall in her office as she looked over reports she had recieved from the local guard as well as the information from the traders and local villagers. If this keeps going the way it is this might cause some issues with the trade flowing in the region. Not to mention potential arrivals might not come, I would like to see the town grow but, if I can help it. Though if I don't handle the matter the Countess might not be pleased with me if she were to show up. She thought to herself as she pushed the papers off to the side. She let out a sigh before as she pushed the papers away from her desk then stood up. She restacked the papers before walking toward the door opening it from her office she stepped out to the main hall of the building. Her retainers milled about the room, looking at the door as she stepped out.

She gave a small signal as they fell inline with her as she exited the hall. Stepping outside the sun shined down on the village, it was warm though there was cool air on the wind. Signaling that the change of the season was coming soon. This meant that winter was well on the way to coming, and it would be here more than likely sooner than later. There was a guard by the door outside who gave her a nod at passing. "Let the villagers know that I will address them all and the concerns on recent events shortly and tell them to assemble here if they wish to hear it." Aurae spoke as the guard nodded and rushed off to pass the word along. After some time many of the villagers arrived and gathered around the stage.

Aurae took her spot on the stage with two of her retainers behind her and the rest scattered about close enough to react if they needed to. She cleared her throat, [red] "Hello everyone, I have seen the requests and the reports about the armed men that have been seen outside of town. While I cannot say for sure if they are bandits or our previous protection. But what I can tell you is that I will be handling this matter without delay. The village was founded on trade, and I would like to see that it remains. So I along with any adventurers or intrigued parties will go and speak with them and see what can be done. Now with that being said is there anyone among you who would like come along?" She inquired waiting to see who would step forward.

It was around noon, with the midday sun's rays shining through the window of a relatively quiet inn—as quiet as inns can get anyway. A woman manned the bar, cleaning drinking glasses absentmindedly while whistling a small tune known only to herself. A small boy, he couldn't have been older than twelve, whizzed amidst tables and chairs with a cleaning rag at hand, wiping any existing but mostly imaginary stains. Most patrons found it endearing and let him do his job, amused at the sight.

Finishing wiping down an empty table, the boy set his sights on one occupied by a guest; from afar the man seemed down in his luck, hunched as he was over his drink, his ginger locks almost licking the surface of the beer he had ordered. As the boy approached, he noticed the man had actually laid out some coins on the table, coppers from what it seemed. With one hand enveloping the beer mug, the other slowly counting the coins, and small murmurs escaping his lips, the picture the man painted at that moment was one of complete hopelessness.

"...ninety-seven...ninety-eight...ninety-ni—excuse me." A voice yanked the man out of his reverie. He turned to see who had addressed him, only to find empty air. "Down here!" The voice exclaimed, and the man turned his sights down towards the kid, regarding it with a face that easily betrayed his current mental state.

"I'm on cleaning duties today, so I must keep the tables spotless!" He watched in silence as the boy climbed up on a stool and started wiping down the table, moving the money and his hands away to help with the process. A satisfied look of another job well done painted the boy's face upon finishing, and he looked once again at the man, one hand pointing at the beer mug in the guest's hand. "Mother said it's on the house, you seemed like you needed it!"

He turned his gaze towards the bar, only to see the woman silently going about her business. After mustering a word of thanks to the boy, he hunched down over his drink once again. He watched himself, the rippling surface of the liquid reflecting back a face as equally familiar as it was foreign. In his mind, the events of the day before replayed over and over again as he struggled to make sense of his predicament.

○ ○ ○

His eyes fluttered open, greeted by the dim, dusty rafters of an unfamiliar ceiling. The air was thick with the scent of mildew, mingling with a metallic tang that set his nerves on edge. He groaned, his hand instinctively reaching for the back of his throbbing head, where a tender lump had already started forming. What had happened? Where was he? As he struggled to sit up, his fingers brushed against something firm. Potatoes. They were scattered around him, a few split open, their earthy smell mixing with the dampness of the cellar. Flashes of memory teased the edges of his mind—a creaking step, the sensation of falling, then darkness.

The realization crept in slowly, as if from a great distance: Aethelred. That was his name. But as the name surfaced, so did a jumble of disjointed images—laughter, a flash of light, the cold touch of steel. His head throbbed with the effort of grasping at these memories, like trying to catch mist in his hands. And then, as if whispered from the shadows, came the echo of a divine mandate: "Your mission, should you accept it, is to save the world from its perpetual stasis. Otherwise, live as you please..."

The words resonated within him, the only clear thing in the haze of his mind. Clinging to that phrase, he surveyed his surroundings, all the while piecing together what other few fragmented memories he could recall; a job—a simple task really, moving sacks of potatoes from the cart outside the house and into a cellar, albeit backbreaking, was honest work. Red could almost hear the voice of the man—Johan was his name—in his head, reminding him time and again to be careful, but he had failed to mention the rickety, rotten wooden stairs he would have Red head down.

He scanned the dimly lit cellar, its stone walls lined with cobwebs, wisps of gray fluttering in the draft from unseen cracks. Wooden shelves, sagging under the weight of dusty jars and forgotten tools, lined one side, while the opposite corner held a pile of firewood, long forgotten and overtaken by a blanket of mold, but which would find use relatively soon with the onset of winter. The single, narrow window near the ceiling allowed a sliver of light to pierce the gloom, casting elongated shadows that danced across the dirt floor.

Aethelred pushed himself to his feet, unsteady but determined. He stumbled toward the collapsed stairs, their broken remains a jagged silhouette against the faint light filtering in from above. His voice, raspy and weak, echoed in the confined space as he called out, "Old Johan! Can you hear me?" He peered up through the narrow opening, the quickly darkening afternoon sky greeting him, yet no further sounds of movement reached his ears. "Johan, it's Red! I'm stuck down here!"

Once again, silence answered him, pressing in from all sides. "There's no way he would have gone to bed already..." Aethelred's heart sank a bit at the thought of him passing the night in a musty prison. He needed to find a way out, and fast. With renewed determination, he began to search the cellar for anything that could aid his escape...

○ ○ ○

Everything after that had been a blur. The first set of yelling, that of the old man upon finding his stairs broken and him balancing atop a makeshift tower of barrels, trying to reach the cellar opening, had positively blown his eardrums off; the second set of yelling coming from the old man's wife, berating both of them—the husband because he'd failed to properly check the damaged stairs, and Red because he'd put himself in danger with his stunts—had obliterated all that was left of his hearing.

And yet, his face grew a faint smile as he thought back at it; the experience had grounded him at that moment, forcing him to temporarily put away any needless thoughts in favor of immediate reconciliation. They'd ended up offering him to stay the night, which he accepted. Warm food and a roof with a bed to sleep on had helped him immensely at that moment, allowing him to organize his mind. The morning after, Johan—with a forced smile on his face—had handed him a small pouch of coins before summarily kicking Red out of his house.

He'd wandered around town for a while, taking in scenery that, again, was familiar yet entirely new to his eyes. Under the, then, morning sun, the village lay quiet and open, with only a few clouds dotting the sky. A light autumn breeze rustled through the cobblestone streets, bringing a hint of chill and the earthy smell of fallen leaves. Red wandered through the heart of the town, where half-timbered houses lined the streets, their roofs a patchwork of repair from years of weathering. The market, though not bustling yet, had a steady flow of villagers browsing stalls that offered simple wares: fresh produce, homespun fabrics, and basic tools were among some of the things being sold.

Soon enough, however, the low growling of an empty stomach, paired along with the sun's rays steadily getting stronger as the day passed, had forced him to head towards an inn, seeking something to ease his appetite. He'd ordered some food and a beer to wash it down, however after finishing eating, something that could only be explained as an existential crisis had soured his mood once again. "How am I supposed to survive with only my name and a few scant memories... and then there's that memory..."

In an attempt to distract himself, Red had started counting the coins Johan had given to him—probably as compensation for the cellar situation at the behest of his wife—and that was when the boy had brought him back to his senses. After the kid had finished with his work, a man hurriedly entered the inn, called upon all to gather in front of the village hall as per the mayor's word, and then quickly left to spread the word elsewhere. Red, having nothing really better to do, followed suit with the rest of the patrons, soon finding himself amidst the rest of the townsfolk who, at the direction of the guards, had formed a small crowd in front of a stage.

The armor-clad, white haired woman addressing the crowd struck quite the image; her words spoke of armed men harassing people in the vicinity of the town, with the murmurs of the people around him seemingly backing her claim. As the woman talked, Red's mind raced—were one to study his face at that moment, they were bound to notice the rapid shifting of emotions going on inside that head of his. "Where there's danger, there is also opportunity, and for one with nothing to his name, I can only go forward..."

With a determined look on his face, Red raised his arm high up to signal the mayor, then walked towards the stage.

"I'd like to volunteer, if that is possible. I believe I could be of help to your cause."

Rosette Louvier

Rosette sat up in bed her eye lids still heavy with sleepiness. For a moment she sat motionless, wondering whether or not she should go back to bed. Then very lazily she climbed free of the warm blankets into the chill of her room. She gave a little shiver as the chill of the wood floor gripped her bare feet. She clutched her arms to her chest as she made her way over to the window. She slid the curtains wide taking in the muted predawn light as she Looked down on the street below from her room on the second floor of the inn. she rubbed her upper arms trying to get some of the warmth back as she watched the few people wandering about at such an early hour. Leaving the curtains wide she went into the small bathroom to begin her morning routine. an hour and a half saw her teeth brushed, hair fixed, and maid uniform dawned complete with hairband and apron. Among her many morning chores she carefully inspected her rifle before loading it and setting it to the side. Lastly she slipped on her sturdy black traveler's ankle boots. She grabbed the key to her room, her rifle, and magazine bag. Her backpack she left next to the bed. Then very quietly she slipped from her room, locking the door and slinging the key around her neck with the leather thong attached to it.

Rosette made her way to the Inn's kitchen where the Inn keeper, A woman in her early thirties was hard at work prepping food for the day. The woman's young son dashed here and there helping her to prepare for the days work. Rosette set her rifle and magazines on an empty table in the far back of the kitchen.

" Madam, what would you like me to do for you today?" Rosette asked politely as she turned to face the woman hard at work prepping a stew for the lunch crowd.

Rosette's sudden words caught the woman off guard and she gave a little start.

" Goodness! Rosette, you're quiet as ghost I swear!" She exclaimed in surprise. " Wasn't today your day off?"

Rosette nodded as she grabbed a small piece of day old bread, a hunk of cheese, and began to snack. She had come into Lanstrich with a traveling merchant she had been hired to protect, but she had been unable to leave due to the mercenaries that had begun to make trouble outside of town. She hadn't much money and had struck a deal with the Inn keeper to work in exchange for a room and meals. So far it had worked out fine as far as Rosette was concerned. The inn keeper was nice and her son was a sweetheart who liked to help his mom.

" I don't mind helping out, I don't have anything else to do." Rosette replied as she finished her little breakfast

" Mmm, just until lunch prep is done, I don't want you over working yourself." The Innkeeper declared in a very motherly tone.

Rosette nodded once in reply and got to work setting up for the lunch time crowd. The morning blew by and soon enough the inn keeper and her son disappeared to the front to clean and prep for the lunch rush. Her tasks completed Rosette washed her hands in the dish sink. Her attention flicked from her hands to the kitchen door as it swung open giving her a glimpse of the dinning hall. Her ruby red eyes caught sight of a rather down trodden fellow. The Innkeeper dished him a plate of food and as she did so she asked Rosette to pour a mug of beer.

Rosette quickly and carefully filled the mug giving it to the Innkeeper who darted efficiently out and into the dinning hall. Rosette watched as she served the plate and mug to the lonely looking man before returning to her duties at the bar in the front. Her son dashed here and there cleaning the tables to spotless perfection or what passed for such in the eyes of a twelve year old. Rosette dished herself a bowl of stew and a mug of ale, eating at the table in the back that passed as a break room, the one that also held her things. Once her lunch was finished Rosette carefully washed her bowl cup and spoon before grabbing her things. She slung her magazine purse across her shoulders to hang on her left side, her rifle she hung on her right shoulder. Just as she was stepping out of the kitchen a man hurriedly entered the inn, called upon all to gather in front of the village hall at the mayor's request, and then quickly left to spread the word elsewhere.

Rosette followed the crowd only a few paces behind the beleaguered man she had watched earlier in the inn. They joined the throng of villagers standing before a stage. After a few moments an elvish woman clad in armor, platinum hair glistening in the sunlight ascended the stage with two of her guards. She cut an imposing figure as she began to speak.

"Hello everyone, I have seen the requests and the reports about the armed men that have been seen outside of town. While I cannot say for sure if they are bandits or our previous protection. But what I can tell you is that I will be handling this matter without delay. The village was founded on trade, and I would like to see that it remains. So I along with any adventurers or intrigued parties will go and speak with them and see what can be done. Now with that being said is there anyone among you who would like come along?" the woman announced

Before she could even think the sad man from earlier stepped forward his arm raised to signal to the woman on the stage.

"I'd like to volunteer, if that is possible. I believe I could be of help to your cause." the man's deep voice boomed.

Rosette was glad something was going to be done about the mercenaries, she was more than ready to continue on her wanderings. The town was pleasant but very small. It reminded her of her home town, but it was not her destiny to remain here and her wanderlust had begun to gnaw at her. She nodded her head to herself one time, a very slight gesture of affirmation. She too would help. Rosette stepped forward quietly, making her way toward the stage very professionally. She noted the positioning of the elf maiden's guards, a habit of hers, and soon she stopped next to the other volunteer. She gave a deep and dignified curtsy.

" Madam, This Rosette will also assist you!" She declared in her light sweet voice. She remained in her curtsy for several heartbeats before rising to her full height.

Aurae stood there for a few moments, the murmuring of the rose slightly. No doubt many of them were annoyed their lives had been disrupted again. First with the Ratmancer, then the mercenaries, and now the armed men. All these recent events culminating at this moment were the most inopportune time. Though there was still wind and it did seem like the windmill was still spinning. She was about to speak again when Red walked up toward the stage, she gave him a small nod before another stepped up dressed in a maid's uniform.

She studied the two for a moment before nodding her head after another moment it was clear that it was going to be up to them to accomplish the task. No doubt the village folk were waiting to see how she handled the situation. She was still very much having to prove her worth in her current position. Of which this didn't look good after the promises she had made. She had made good on some of them such as removing the old mayor and the corrupt mercenaries with him. But that wasn't going to be enough to earn their trust and full support. If she wasn't careful when the next election came around she could be next on the chopping block.

"Thank you for volunteering, everyone else please remain calm the local guard has the ability to maintain order in the village. So I do not fear retaliation or any attacks. But for the time being keep the village, farmers will be informed to keep an eye out as well. Now if you two will follow me we must discuss a few things before leaving town to attempt to talk to the men," Aurae concluded as she motioned for the two to follow her to her office.

When the group was inside, one of her retainers remained by the door outside the office while the others did menial tasks. "Once again, thank you, I'm Aurae Faren, and I'm the recently elected mayor of the village. Now there has been some rather unfortunate events here in the village over the last couple of months. Though the first event I don't think holds any sway on the situation but the other two do. The former mayor was being paid by some extra muscle he hired to look the other way as they did what they wanted in the village. When I took the office I said I would remove them and I did, but rumors came up that the group was then fired from their employer. They might have turned to banditry in the process," She explained, motioning for the two to sit down and make themselves comfortable.

Aurae had her theories on who was behind all of this but she and the group were going to need to meet with the armed men in question if they were going to get to the bottom of this. Which had the potential to spark an even more dangerous event if it was not handled correctly.

The general civil unrest did not escape Red's notice; it would take a long time, and who knows how many sacrifices, for the supposed bandits to be dealt with the traditional way. He assumed the mayor would try a more diplomatic approach to start, hence the meeting they were currently having. Although focused on her and her explanation of the history between this town and the attackers, Red's eyes wandered, examining the room they were situated in. The blend of rustic charm and lingering extravagance, presumably inherited from the previous mayor's tenure, gave him the feeling that Aurae's words about her bribe-taking predecessor were the truth.

The wooden walls were partially obscured by rich tapestries depicting historic battles, while a grand but slightly tarnished chandelier hung from above, casting a warm glow. A solid, rich, brown piece of mahogany desk with minimal ornamentation held the mayor's documents, a simple yet elegant brass lamp casting light across the papers.

"...rumors came up that the group was then fired from their employer. They might have turned to banditry in the process."

As the mayor's speech trailed off, Red looked at the woman that had volunteered along with him, and then looked back at the mayor before speaking up to introduce himself. "I am called Aethelred, but you can call me Red if it helps," he said with a smile. "Now, I believe there are several ways we can go about solving this problem, Mayor Faren, but to me you seem to be a person that avoids needless bloodshed, so a diplomatic approach seems best in this situation," Red continued, leaning a little further in.

"You mentioned that the previous mayor took bribes in exchange for overlooking some of the bandits' crimes in the village. Maybe our solution lies in that person, and whatever he knows about those men. Might give us a clue about their operations, inner conflicts, or any potential weakness we could exploit, down the line, to gain the upper ground in our negotiations with the bandits." After finishing, he leaned back a bit and looked at the two women. "Miss... uh... Rosette, you too, what do you think of this proposal?"

There Cass was, a wandering vagabond of robotic make haunting these quite vast forests( a cruel irony he seemed so distant from it all now. ) before bumping into a couple of fellows. 'fellows' of course being the cordially term for what they were- some half way evolution towards and backwards from banditry. Certainly their attire spoke of some degree of organisation and training but their ruggedness spoke of rough living, a queer combination; though it wasn't like he was looking any better. Maybe that was why they had immediately hit it off right after, before he knew it he was slung round a campfire, swapping stories and laughing with them. Turns out they were a bunch of mercenaries recently burnt, very bitter, very angry and very willing to drink and rant with some poor doll-looking man such as himself; yet always buttoning up whenever he inquired further into the matter of their rapid unemployment. Even going as far as to lend him a ineffective sleeping bag to sleep beneath the night sky, beautiful as always, stars oddly positioned as always here.

God knows, the mercenaries would probably rip him apart if they knew he went off to see the the matter dealt with the morning after, even if it was for their own good. A man can't run from his problems forever after all. They would have to confront their situation eventually instead of wallowing and stewing in that pit of bitterness they called camp, and if it took one rusty machine to be the push, Cass would happily do it. Who knows maybe a third party wold be enough to distil matters down to a simple disagreement and away from an lynching. They'll thank him in a couple of years, give or take. Hell worst comes to worst he certainly won't be the man who leaks their position out.

Cass plodding his way along the road to the 'damned' village in question. Already far exceeding what accounts he had heard the night before with every step inward, it was homely and quaint, quite quaint actually especially compared to some joints of his past, shame the guards seemed to be giving him the stinkeye, the locals were gathered around that preaching mayor, Cass having to squeeze in the back. He'd caught most of her speech, sounded all sorts of good apart from the bad parts concerning his 'bandit' friends, still didn't make him trust her. All mayors were corrupt in his opinion, it just ranged on a spectrum. That was a fact he was certain of even if they draped in slick armour. The crowd dispersed, sending him with it, just catching a glance at the backskirts of the relocating folk the mayor took, and losing them...Luckily there were some people around to ask directions. Cass grabbing the closet looking man with a cold hand, gripping his shirt with an exertion of his arm gears and asking him a polite question.

"Ai, you know where'd the Mayor and that get off to? I wish to present as an volunteer, lad. " Cass- or maybe his scratched voicebox said. His face was so wrapped in cloth, as to spare these fine folk from the unfinished face that covered his robotic skull, the motion of cogs and gears following the movements of his mouth. The face also never seemed to never move with his words or expressions. A cold stoic front, that he had to compensate for to be seen as friendly. A task he had expressively failed considering the look on the man's face. Though he eventually mustered enough of a spine to point him to the mayor's office.

Maybe that uniform badge he'd nicked wasn't the best choice to wear after all. Judging from the stares or hushed whispers now that the people weren't engrossed in a speech, his dear compatriots had seemed to have lost quite a bit of goodwill- hopefully just hysteria to be resolved at the moment.

Cass arriving shortly at the mayor's office and having to contend with some guards barring his entry, requiring a long explanations involving 'I am here to see the mayor, I ain't hurt no-one.' and 'Yes I ain't here to rob ya, and look er' my gun don't even work so just let me through already-' in hopefully his best peacekeeping monotone until he'd buggered his way through to the door of the occupied office with only seven separate warnings and threats, the guards confident in the Mayor's abilities, which is a good or bad thing depending on day's end. The décor all the way through highly aristocratic, typical. Sharply making his inside mid collusion between the maid, man and elf.

"Apologize for the interruption Lass and Lad and apologize to you mayor-lass. I'd gotten held back so rudely as to deter my timely arrival to volunteer." Cass said apologetically, tipping his hat toward the three of them. They didn't look like much from a glance, which was good sign considering he'd had half a mind they were the defensive force ready to wipe them out. "I'll share my opinion and information after the Lass's answer I sorely interrupted. I'm curious as to what a..."

Cass momently lost his curated mellow tone, the Lad and Mayor-lass looked like something: Mayor-lass was quite simply in armour and high-status, pointy ears like those elves he'd heard about and a certain 'shine' to her that you see in leaders. But she was still a mayor. The Lad meanwhile looked like someone Cass should probably not call a lad considering their scrappiness and build, a mean hint at something to volunteer. But his words stirred Cass up, they weren't 'bandits' yet anyway(mere-slip of the tongue or possible law licker bias). Which was why he was momentarily stunned by the small maid present and the mean gun she had, was she like a personal servant of one of the two present? or maybe like that rifle she had was hers like she was some sorta maid-soldier. Good for her, that sounds pretty cool.

"Ahem- The dear Lass has to offer towards the conversation. Though I'll like to add the proverb 'innocent until proven guilty' towards the conversation the Lad proposed, be careful as to not make what you speak of real. " Cass trailed towards the lad at the end. God, he really did sorta grow attached last night didn't he. Hopefully any crimes committed weren't the bad kind, just the good kind, like drunken brawls and just battering's. Then he wouldn't have to revaluate the conversations last night.

Rosette followed the woman and her entourage as they made their way to the Mayor's office. As the little group walked through the rustically appointed building Rosette couldn't help but wonder at the civil unrest she had just witnessed outside. She would have thought the Mayor would have much more support from her kinsmen, but perhaps that was not the case here. As they entered the office Rosette took note of the retainer the Mayor stationed at the door.

They might have turned to banditry in the process,"

Rosette listened to Mayor Faren's brief explanation as she took a seat. Her mind was working through the information she had received. She could see why the Mayor would want a diplomatic solution. The men paying bribes to the former mayor would likely have only comprised a small number of the mercenaries originally hired. Though their actions would have brought a stigma to the group as a whole. The men outside town were likely the innocent members, and with no money they had taken up residence outside the town. Rosette knew first hand the expense and rigor of travel, and that the likelihood of the men turning to brigandry was very high.

"I am called Aethelred, but you can call me Red if it helps,"

Now, I believe there are several ways we can go about solving this problem, Mayor Faren, but to me you seem to be a person that avoids needless bloodshed, so a diplomatic approach seems best in this situation,"

"You mentioned that the previous mayor took bribes in exchange for overlooking some of the bandits' crimes in the village. "Miss... uh... Rosette, you too, what do you think of this proposal?"

Rosette's train of thought was interrupted by the man Aethelred, and she listened closely to him. She faced him properly as he spoke and carefully contemplated his ideas. As the door to the office swung open Rosette immediately turned her attention to it. Her instincts on full alert as an unkempt, doll like man strode into the room. He bore a revolver at the hip and quite the rough appearance, and to Rosette he seemed no stranger to violence.

"Apologize for the interruption Lass and Lad and apologize to you mayor-lass. I'd gotten held back so rudely as to deter my timely arrival to volunteer."

His apologetic and polite tone lowered his threat assessment in Rosette's mind, and she welcomed another armed compatriot.

"I'll share my opinion and information after the Lass's answer I sorely interrupted. I'm curious as to what a..." the doll continued as his curated tone fell apart momentarily "Ahem- The dear Lass has to offer towards the conversation. Though I'll like to add the proverb 'innocent until proven guilty' towards the conversation the Lad proposed, be careful as to not make what you speak of real. "

" If I may give a slight introduction." She began once he had finished speaking." I am Rosette Louvier. It is my humble pleasure to make your acquaintance My nameless new friend, Master Aethelred, Mayor Faren. Now if I may add, Master Aethelred, your ideas while sound have been formed without full context of the situation. We have yet to be told what exactly happened to the mayor. He seems to have been driven off. What of the Mercenaries guilty of bribery, were they driven off as well? Did every man that the former mayor hired end up abusing their position? were any of them innocent? It is just as our new friend suggests, these men could well be the innocent men whose image was tarnished by the acts of their compatriots."

Rosette turned her attention back to Mayor Faren.

" If you would be so kind Mayor Faren, I believe we could use some clarification of the situation as much as you may afford us. Though, I should like to play devil's advocate for just a moment." Rosette continued." I heard much discontent from the crowd while you had made your proclamation. I wonder if it wouldn't be more efficient to ruthlessly stamp out these mercenaries with violence. This would both show the villagers that you have the power to truly protect them and also that you are not to be trifled with."

Rosette heaved a sigh as she gave each of her new companions a small smile. " If that Idea is too much I would suggest perhaps bringing the mercenary Leaders here where we have the advantage. If they are innocent then perhaps we can convince the towns folk to accept them once more, and in this way the town's soldiery can be bolstered. I will gladly volunteer myself for such dangerous tasks."

Aurae looked past Red as she heard the footsteps outside; they were ones that she didn't recognize. This could mean that someone else would join them, although she wasn't entirely sure who would be at this point. She had waited several minutes for people to volunteer before departing; when Red started to speak, her gaze shifted back to him. She brushed a few strands of hair out of her face as she leaned forward on her desk. Her sword was leaning against the wall behind her and then the door opened which drew her attention away from Red and the new arrival walked in.

"I would like to avoid bloodshed if possible. You are right. However, I'm an adventurer by trade. So if it turns to violence, well, then so be it," Aurae replied with a simple nod of her head, pausing for a moment. "As Rosette has theorized, the former mayor is no longer here; after the election was concluded, he left pretty quickly afterward. If the rumors are to be believed, he went to the capital city," She explained before standing up from the chair and walking over to the window before listening to the rest of Rosette was saying. The village itself had a long string of events which many of the locals were hoping for some time that there wasn't some kind of a threat.

"As for the mercenaries...I don't know much about them, to be completely honest, other than they were hired after the appearance of a Ratmancer. They were supposed to leave once the threat had passed. However, they remained. While they were here, the group harassed merchants, and according to some of the locals, fights had started, and the Mercenaries were pushing the legal limits. From what I was told, the group was fairly close-knit. Is there the possibility that a couple of them might have held some regrets personally, but I can't speak on that matter as a fact," Aurae replied as she leaned against the wall and looked at the group.

"Much of the grumblings have been the string of events, I'm a newcomer I have far more to prove and they are still deciding if I can keep things under control," She paused as she bit her lower lip for a second and walked back over to her desk. "Crushing them would be a simple solution this is true, however sometimes solving the issue without the need to shed blood can hold a greater reward," She pointed out leaning against the desk as her eyes shifted over each of the individuals before her.

"However, I doubt you will find the leader of the former mercenary group, he was the worst offender of the issues, he even made threats towards me and some other individuals during the election that happened," She explained and then her gaze fell on the newest arrival. "You had something you were going to add?" She inquired.

After his introduction Cass respectfully removed his hat and held it behind his back with both hands, standing himself politely near to that Aethereld fella while miss Rosette Louv-louisis-lousivi-whatever fancy last name she got spoke her introduction. Respectfully and quietly listening-or at least tried to- some mutters spewing out his lips after the maid proposed a full-scale eradication:

"Jeez, pull the cotton round my eye's with the fashion...Psst, Aethereld, If I pronounced that right? Is Rosy over there always so cold-blooded? You sure she ain't like a spy or somethin'? " Cass practically whispered to Aethereld. To propose a straight extermination with a smile, sent shivers down his boots. It was a pragmatic logic that went against his bleeding heart, and felt off coming from one so young looking.

Fortunately the Mayor dismissed that suggestion, along with any possibilities of yanking that crooked former mayor back. Bloody politicians. Bloody mercenaries as well. Faren's elaborations made them seem even more lucky and even more stupid. This mayor could've easily crushed them, so whatever fallout occurred between the former mayor and them before must've been pretty bad to risk the hangman.

"Well, I ain't got nothin' much to add, you lot damn near hit every nail on the head. But I'll give it a go around." Cass said after the Mayor was finished, stepping forward to better address this motley crowd. "Firstly the name's Cass Garret, latest and greatest of my name. I'd like to say I can get you an parley with 'em, or at the very least get a message through to em'. I do apologize that I can't give up specifics about their location but I've put my word on that. But I will say Miss Faren you're right on the money on them being close-knit; however, their human, they'll listen to reason you believe me."

"Before any actions though. Do you have any of the names of the merchants or persons involved? If so with a couple pointed directions It'd probably be worth double-checking them before starting trouble. Whatever was bribed quiet has gotta be worth the cost. If it don't trouble you as well Mayor, could you elaborate on sort of threats did these men say to you? Were they trying to get you onto there racket or to get outta the election race? "

Cass wanted to believe that this was all some misfortune series of misunderstandings. Yet something smelt awfully fishy 'bout all this. He would've almost respected it if it didn't seem so petty and masked in rumors. The hell were they doing that was worth bribing a mayor, surely not just to harass a small village or flog merchants for money for a month before they got a whiff of danger and ran. It smelt of protection racket but sung of extortion. He was missing something. Or maybe his heart was too compromised. Bah, politics, all complicated jargon, maybe a simple solution was in need.

"Thinking on it though why don't you just duel the mercenary leader? " Cass taking a moment to fix his hat back squarely on his head, then continuing on with his 'easy' suggestion with a hand fiddling with his gun handle. "I mean he slighted you mean-like and threatened you. I get you don't want to spill blood; which is better than most, but these rough guns-for-hire types got awful prides. One simple call for noon and a clash of arms to solve it all-hell you'd probably don't even gotta kill him! Just send them back with their tail between their legs. Hell of a first impression for the town and forces them to concede to your demands! " Spoken with an eager excitement, a smile creeping through his bandages before disappearing. His hands moving back to his sides.

"Well, just an idea is all. "

Ratmancer....The very idea of it caused Rosette to give a small shiver. Even so, she carefully kept her attention on the Mayor. She listened intently to the information the Mayor was imparting to them. Puzzling over it, twisting it and turning it in her mind. The former leader of the mercenaries had disappeared, and the mayor had supposedly run off to the capitol. If she was understanding things correctly, the mercenaries while acting inappropriately had not actually broken the law, merely skirted along it's edges. The ones who seemed to have committed real crime had already ran off. The Mayor wanted a solution that would win over the people who distrusted her and one that didn't provoke any bloodshed. What did the mercenaries want? They had returned to the village despite having upset it's citizens, and they were disrupting trade. Rosette truly felt they should be ruthlessly erased. It was clear to her that they were using this Mayor's relative newness to their advantage. Having lost their jobs they were basically trying to enforce Mayor Faren to foot their bills.

When the Mayor directed their attention to the newcomer Rosette turned her gaze to him. She gave him her full attention as he spoke. Cass had struck upon a very good line of thinking. Knowing what the mercenaries had been doing, what the bribes had been for, and even just ascertaining the trustworthiness of the claimants would do much to aid them. However, Rosette was not onboard for a duel. If they would go to that level she felt a full extermination would serve them much better.

" Master Garret, I do believe a duel would be impracticable, The one who threatened the good mayor has already left as she mentioned." Rosette stated, her eyes locking briefly with the bandaged man. " Though I agree it would be wise to double check on the merchants and any claims against the mercenaries before we engage in trouble making."

Rosette turned her attention back to the Mayor.

" I cannot help but feel that these men are preying upon your newness Mayor Faren. I believe we should take a firm approach with them, these men had no qualm skirting the edges of propriety, and so we owe them nothing least of all safety. In fact if we are going to parley with them in any sense of the word then your goals are the ones the three of us should be most concerned with. That said; what exactly are your aims Mistress? Do you simply want them chased off? Is there some information you need from them? Do you want some of them arrested? Do you want to hire them? If you tell us what it is you desire them I am sure between us we can see that your goals are accomplished." Rosette stated calmly " I must however caution against capitulating to their demands. It would be better to shed blood than to bow and scrape to criminals."

Red leaned back in his chair, his eyes subtly narrowing as he regarded Cass. The man's familiarity with the mercenaries was intriguing, if not a bit unsettling. "Cass, you seem to know quite a bit about these men," he said cautiously. "Your direct contact could be invaluable, but I can't help but wonder—how exactly did you come to know them? Given the tensions, it's important for us to be sure we're all on the same page."

He paused briefly before continuing. "If you're willing to act as an intermediary, that could help us reach a peaceful resolution. But we need to ensure that there's no conflict of interest."

"As for Miss Louvier, he said, facing her. "I understand your concern about showing strength to maintain order, and in some parts I agree with you. However, if we jump straight to violence, we might escalate the situation unnecessarily. These men might be desperate, not inherently malicious... but that doesn't change the fact that they did harass the public during their stay here." Red eyed Cass as he finished his sentence, hopeful the man would understand the underlying message.

Looking at Mayor Faren, Red continued, "Mayor, you mentioned that these mercenaries were initially hired to deal with a Ratmancer and then overstayed their welcome. It's possible they feel abandoned or cheated by the former mayor's sudden departure. If we can address their grievances, perhaps we can find a peaceful resolution."

"I propose we send a small delegation—perhaps the four of us—to meet with them under a flag of truce. We can offer them legitimate work or safe passage elsewhere. If they refuse and choose hostility, we'll be better informed about their intentions and can prepare accordingly."

Red glanced around the room, meeting each person's gaze. "Ultimately, our goal should be to protect the village with minimal harm. If we can resolve this without bloodshed, it would strengthen your position, Mayor Faren, and show the villagers that you can handle conflicts wisely."

He added with a slight smile, "Of course, we should remain cautious. We'll need a contingency plan in case things go south. But I believe, as I said in the beginning, that it's worth trying diplomacy first."

"What do you all think?"

Aurae sat back in her chair as her eyes shifted to each individual. "Mr Garret, I do not think that all of them will see reason, it is a nice ideal to hold up to. But, if one participates in what some would consider crimes then takes part in it unless a knife is held to their throat is no better than the rest." She paused for a moment as her eyes shifted back to Cass. "Can't speak of the location? I had just intended to walk out of town until I found the first group of them," She explained but that line of his had caught her attention as she rested her hands on her desk as they were clasped together.

As several of them were asking about merchants who had been involved, "Already one step ahead of you all, the local merchant guild had collected complaints against the mercenaries. I had to make a deal with the merchants guild to get these which I had used during the day of the vote. The merchants complained about damage to goods, stalls, and threats to them by the mercenaries, all of which have named at least every one of the former group that we know of at least once. If you wish to speak with the merchants that is fine but, I doubt you would be able to find out more information compared to what has already been reported," She spoke opening a drawer in her desk and pulled out a stack of letters each bearing the symbol of the merchant's guild.

Aurae let out a small sigh, "For the record, the mayor left a few days after the election, the mercenary leader left the same day as they were kicked out of town. Last time we heard anything about them was that they went to Ryken. Now for all we know it could be another group of people but based on what people have reported to me some of the same faces are around here once again," She theorized leaning on her elbows as she closed her eyes.

She sat silently for a few moments as she was milling over some thoughts in her head. "Employing them is out of the question; they were draining the town dry and making business here unprofitable for everyone. So, hiring them is out of the question; I plan to approach this diplomatically at first. If they want a fight, then they are going to get one. Since they couldn't solve the Ratmancer themselves a group of adventurers had to do it for them." She concluded as her eyes shot open and moved from one to the other.

"I have no power to give them save passage, my power ends so far from town and, I think many of the village residents would not be happy about that fact, they can leave whenever they want. But, we will see what happens when we meet them, now are there any other questions or shall we proceed to where they were last spotted?" She inquired.

Rosette wore a small polite smile as she listened to the mayor, giving the Elven woman her complete attention. All the while she thought carefully on what everyone had said. It was no longer a question that they were dealing with criminal sorts and not just rough and tumble sorts. Rosette truly doubted that they would be able to deal with them diplomatically, but was more than willing to give it her best. These mercenaries were, in her estimation, more akin to a street gang that knew to skirt on the side of legality. That fact would prove troublesome she felt.

Rosette wondered what these criminals wanted that they would lurk outside a town they had been driven out of. She found it rather surprising really. Surprising and more than a bit disconcerting. Although her assessment of the situation might be wrong, it seemed as if they intended a form of political dissidence. They would skirt her authority in the same quasi legal way in which they had harassed the towns folk. Thus it seemed more than clear to Rosette that they intended to undermine and damage the Mayor's position.

She nodded once to herself as she resolved her position mentally. She now understood the importance of a peaceful solution to this issue. Those in authority above the Mayor would be watching with interest. Keen to evaluate the skills and value of their subordinate. Potential enemies would be seeking her weaknesses, and with that thought Rosette wondered if perhaps the mercenaries were having their strings pulled by some political enemy intent on causing the Mayor an issue. Be it the former Mayor, or some new adversary, it was a situation that bore observation and caution.

" I personally have no further questions, and am keen to see these mercenaries first hand. However, a thought occurred to me. Perhaps this entire issue is a calculated attack on your credibility Mayor Faren. Surely this does not look good in the eyes of your superiors, and perhaps it was the former Mayor's intent to cause you such a dilemma. Additionally, it might well be the work of a new political enemy. I think it prudent to keep these thoughts in mind as we visit with them." Rosette remarked politely.

Rosette closed her eyes briefly as she rubbed her temples with the thumb and fingers of her right hand. Political fighting was not something that she was good at particularly. This was the realm of the nobility, and their specialty not hers. She and those in her family were trained in the basics of such combat, but more to be able to tactfully avoid it than to embroil themselves in it. She hoped that she was wrong in her over all assessment, and in fact hoped rather for a violent engagement. The tangible dangers of physical combat were much preferred to the intangible dangers of politicking.

She took a deep breath, her smile slipping from her face as she lowered her hand to once again rest it in her lap. Regardless of the outcome of their situation she intended to give her best aid. However, she would be sure to prevent herself form making a lasting enemy if it proved to be at all possible. It would do herself no good to draw the ire of some low rank noble, criminal mercenary, or other nameless brigand. At least she seemed to be in capable company.

Cass Garret

"But just imagine it, a duel at noon with whatever doohickies they use, a clash of wills to pursue their dreams, a passionful- Okay I see that ain't happening" Cass tapered off in disappointment from Rosette's dismissal.

Shame, ain't nothing better to clear the soul than watching another bear it, though it was probably for the best Rosy killed that dream before he got to thinking better of the Bourgeoisie; even if Rosy seemed to have the sense of a banker. All cut costs this and abject success that. Heartless, soul less people. Still, Cass kept listening to Rosy and the rest of them all reach the same page of this unfortunate chapter.

The fellow in the chair, Aethereld, perking up, with a rather astute line of questioning towards the situation and him:

"That is a succinct question..." Cass addressed the question levied at him. "We happened across one another on a narrow path in the woods."

A disappointing answer to a simple question, Cass even gave a shrug as if he didn't give the non-sequitur himself. Close enough to the truth. Just a shame he had to condense it when Red was giving out some keynotes he liked the lick of, peaceful resolutions were a sordidly desire of his after all. A delegation of them four...He can work with that, safe passage and the works, one hell of a bargain to object. Cass nodding his agreement to Red's preposition, getting the message, at least the parts he agreed with. There would no acquittal, still, seemed the man weren't on the execution train of thought.

Cass leaning up against one of them fine tapered walls as the Mayor fished into her desk. (nabbing a chair now seemed counter-productive and he was plain tired of standing straight.) nodding along all the while-

And promptly stepping forward when she dared to question his ideal.

"-They will see reason. " Bluntly declared with pride and a stare. Like a flame striking tinder Cass seemed to erupt in passion: " What about if the knife held to their throats is metaphorical, one made up of coin, desperation or dreams, the same knife that hovers nary all our throat, that tug us towards the desires of another is that not the freedom of- A-Ahem- Crimes don't make you any less human. We can reason with humans. Without a outstretched hand, most won't be able to pick themselves up. " Cass then shuffled back, sufficiently done. Something in that cold hard logic of sweeping them all together had pricked him fierce. But they weren't here to argue philosophy.

The fact he couldn't exactly explain that most groups the Mayor planned to wonder into may not exactly be the most friendliest of individuals, without sounding even more a fool just made him feel even more like fool, but a idealistic fool. He'd intended to curate the best impression for them, but now this was to be a free roll. Hopefully better odds than his first meeting. Which he soon realised would look rather suspicious now if he were to reappear with the Mayor and this gaggle.

His face contorting itself into its best imitation of a grimace when Aurae procured evidence, compounding matters further on the scale, no plausible deniability, no reemployment, no safe package and a disturbing recontextualization of some of the words shared with him. Still on the brightside. Cass made sure to try and nab one of those letters before they headed out: "Excuse me, may I borrow one of those letters there? to read on the road."

An idea brewing in his head, further supported from Rosette's accusations of this being politics at play. Cass's hand once again idlly thumbing his gun while he thought. Whatever compelled them to stay had to be at the behest of their leader. If Cass simply dealt with them, either by scapegoating them or convincing the village that it was simple case of abusive leadership, it could be a way out. How unfortunate it was that he couldn't remember their face, an apparent abstainer from revelry. Cass let out a breath, he was thinking too hard about this.

"I'm rearing to go already. " Cass said, stretching his mechanical limbs, keen to start already and stop worrying. Once they were out on the road he could start his plans. To obnoxiously whistle his presence towards the mercenaries. It weren't a good plan but it was certainly a start.

Red had been quiet for some time, leaning back slightly in his seat, his sharp gaze alternating between Aurae, Rosette, and Cass. When the mayor finished her explanation, his lips tightened at Cass’s idealistic outburst, though the man’s passion clearly struck some chord within him. Finally, Red leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees, his expression thoughtful but weighted with concern.

"Well, I think this discussion has dragged on for longer than necessary," he said once the others had voiced their opinions. "At the end of the day, this is your town, Mayor Faren. Your people look to you to make the call, and we’re here to support you, not to wrestle the decision from your hands. We’ve each shared our views—Rosette sees a bigger political game, Cass sees a chance for redemption, while I think there’s wisdom in both approaches."

"Rosette makes a fair point—if there’s more to this than meets the eye, then this isn’t just about a band of wayward mercenaries. And Cass, you’re not wrong to believe people can change, or that desperation might’ve driven some of them to this. I'm of the mind that the truth likely lies somewhere between."

Red let the weight of his words settle before continuing. "Now, it’s time for you to take the lead. How you choose to approach this—whether to extend a hand, an ultimatum, or a sword—will shape not just the outcome but how this town sees you as its leader. Whatever you decide, we’re ready to stand behind you." He paused, his fingers steepling as his eyes locked onto Aurae. "I respect your decision to approach this diplomatically, because It’s the right call to start with. If things go south, though…"

He shifted in his chair, the wood creaking a little under his weight. "It’s clear from your account that these people aren’t just mercenaries—they’re troublemakers who’ve already crossed too many lines. So, if they don’t accept reason, we'll do what’s necessary to protect this town." With that, he leaned back again, folding his arms across his chest, his tone softening slightly. "But one thing is clear: doing nothing isn’t an option. These mercenaries are either a threat or an opportunity. It’s up to you how we move forward."

Aurae took a deep breath as she stood up from her desk it seems like everyone was ready to go. She then turned around and grabbed her sword that was leaning against the wall. She tied it around her waist and looked toward Rosette. "Could be the former mayor however, the man was greedy rather than vindictive but I suppose we shall see soon enough when the times comes." She concluded with a nod of her head as she started to come around her desk when Cass asked about getting one of the letters. She cocked an eyebrow for a moment as she reached into her desk and pulled out a copy of one of the letters and slid it across the desk.

"Who said we were going to do nothing?" She chuckled as she started to walk out of her office and signaled for her minions to follow. The group left the main hall and passed through the village. Many of the merchants were selling wares, some of the inhabitants were walking into the local tavern. The sun was still out and the rays warmed the air, the dirt path that ran through the village was well traveled. One could see the years of wagons and other wheeled things coming and going. from the wear and tear.

As the group made it out of the village, they soon left the village behind the forrest remained on the left side of the path about 20 years away. Ocasionally there was a group or two that were traveling through heading toward the village and some were returning home from their day of trading. The group came up to a tree that offered shade from the sun but as they got close a familiar figure to Aurae and Cass stepped out from behind the tree.

"Well, well, well, looks like the new Mayor has finally decided to grace us with her presence." The large man spoke as he rested his hands on his hips flanked by 7 other individuals. The man had black hair, a scar that ran the down his right eye down to the middle of his cheek. A longsword was tied to his hip, he spit off to the side and closed the gap. "I wondered how long it would take before you would come out here. You made me and my boys loss all our clients, so we have come to collect," He concluded as he leaned in a only a foot away from Aurae's face.

Aurae heard the sounds of her retainers moving which she held up her hand to stop them from moving. "You caused trouble for the town and the merchants, you were also bribing the mayor not my problem when I sent word back to the local mercenary guild about what happened." She retorted as she stood her ground.

Rosette watched as the Mayor rose from her desk and strapped on her sword, her eyes meeting Aurae's as the woman directed her attention to Rosette.

"Could be the former mayor however, the man was greedy rather than vindictive but I suppose we shall see soon enough when the times comes."

Rosette took in the Mayor's opinion and smiled politely as the Mayor gave a short concluding nod of her head. She watched as the letter was passed to Cass, and She took a long look at each of her companions. Cass had the look of a bandit or a stickup man, but judging by his words he was given to the romantic. It was a strange form of gap-moe that made her smile deepen as she took in the doll man and his strange aesthetic. Aurae Faren, Mayor of Lanstrich, she was stern but capable. A beautiful and ethereal being wrapped in the accoutrements of battle. Her confidence bubbling into her voice and in her stride as she and her henchman made their way out of the office. Then finally there was Aethelred. At first sight she had mistaken him as a homeless trouble maker, but it hadn't taken long to change her opinion of him.

He came across as practical and level headed. Rosette was sure he was no stranger to trouble and could hold his own. The warm smile she had flashed at Cass remained as she took Aethelred into her consideration. The Mayor and her two new colleagues inspired confidence in their endeavor. She was certain the odd group would be successful whether it be through their weapons or their words. She gave a brief curtsy to the two men.

" Master Aethelred, Master Cass, I shall be taking my leave first." She commented before moving to quickly follow after Mayor Faren.

She scurried out into the hall and afterwards into the village streets. Her eyes took in every passerby as they cut through town. She looked for any sign of threat as they walked. The sounds of the village filled the air, but still she kept her ears alert for the tell tale noises of trouble. Then as they neared the out skirts of town she slung her rifle across her front in the collapsed low ready position her mother had ingrained into her since childhood, right alongside afternoon tea service. Her trigger finger rest easy along the trigger guard, and her gaze searched for trouble along the roads. Her eyes searching each passing person as they walked along the road growing farther and farther from town.

She followed along dutifully as the group made their way toward a large shade tree, noting the dangerous man who chose that moment, with his acolytes, to make their presence known to the little group of diplomats.

"Well, well, well, looks like the new Mayor has finally decided to grace us with her presence."

"I wondered how long it would take before you would come out here. You made me and my boys loss all our clients, so we have come to collect,"

She counted eight combatants as she listened to the man speak, but her eyes searched for others who might be lying in wait. As Mayor Faren's guards moved to deal with the threat to their boss Rosette took a few steps to the side to give her a clear line of fire at the Mercenaries. Her right hand index finger flicked the safety off before returning to it's resting place alongside the trigger guard. If trouble popped off she would shoot these mercenaries dead starting with the ones closest to her. Her face wore no smile, nor sense of charm, but rather a cold and calculating visage.

"You caused trouble for the town and the merchants, you were also bribing the mayor not my problem when I sent word back to the local mercenary guild about what happened."

The Mayor's proclamation was sure to elicit a negative reaction from the overly brazen Mercenary. Rosette was not so well versed in these sort of rough negotiations, but she would offer whatever help she could. On the other hand she was a capable fighter in her own humble opinion, and on that matter she was comfortable. Thus she kept her mouth shut knowing that she would lean toward the type of parlay that would lead to an unwanted fight.

Cass Garret

He said his thanks and took the letter. There was little else to discuss by this point, as proven by the Mayor departing with an ominous sword followed by the Maid's rather swift departure . Cass following through with a self-confident jaunt towards the outside, letter in his hands and trying to fiddle with it: "Hmmm...Now's that alot of jargon right there. "

Cass mumbled to himself and the mutilated letter in his hands, having been fiddling with it the whole way outta town. He'd reached the unfortunate quandary of how to open one such letter. His answer of simply slipping one mechanical finger across the through-line of it and yanking it upwards did a rather crude job of opening it. An full paper trail of destruction in all respects, yet with polite names to remember for later.

His eyes only leaving the paper to dine on the feast of well-mannered quaintness. An beaming sun that almost warmed his metallic carapace and the living breathing hustle and bustle of a thriving town. One that almost reminded him of home; and how he didn't belong here or there.

Still, he slipped that naked paper into his pocket, sparing half a thought to attempt to reapply the envelope before realizing his lack of solvent or left-over paper for that matter. Instead busying himself instead with whistling- poorly as one could with metal for a voicebox. The folk that passed them on this well trodden road seeming mightily different from their group: One Mayor walking like an Arthurian with her company, a rough-looking man who seemed like the muscle and a French maid with a bloody Rifle.

Good people if a little too uptight if anything...Though their appearance brought to mind a certain idea. those two(the Mayor likely known of) looked mighty and odd enough if one didn't know them, specifically for a certain band of merc's who whispered terror and spite to the dreaded Ratmancer. (whatever that was)

When they eventually came to an familiar spot of shade, wherein an familiar band of folk made their presence known. A few of the retinue recognisable enough for Cass to give a friendly wave, nice fellows. Before the scarred sour fellow (that sadly Cass also recognised) opened his mouth, and there went any remaining goodwill left from the Mayor. The two of them already practically at each other's throats and the click of the maid's safety turning off-

"Ah bugger."

Cass rushing to mediate before they started to take swings. "- Woah, lets all calm ourselves down a bit, no point for fighting words. We all want the same thing here. " hurriedly said while he tried to lightly move them apart, giving them both a ambiguous wink as he did so.

Though making sure to place himself by the familiar man's side, close enough to address him. His tone more relaxed, less stiff, Cass was more at home in this type of company: "C'mon mate, I did what I said I was gonna do didn't I. Told you it weren't so hard to organise a parley and here you go already ruining my hard-work with this 'collection' business. " Well, more specifically what he'd said during his nightly stupor was 'Stop being a bunch of sourpusses, I'd do it my god-damn self if I have to. Get you lot off of burnt toast at least. ' but still close enough.

"God-damn. it's like you don't even know who those two are -" Cass exclaimed dramatically for the rest to hear whilst aiming a pointed finger at Aethereld and Rosette's hopefully threatening visage, hopefully to add a bit of doubt to the fight option. Yet whispered the last part to the big man himself- "Just please try and not mess this up, if not for my sake getting you such a good deal; but for the lad's."

With that Cass dug out that now crumpled up but still legit letter, Cass gave it to the man before backing away and taking a moment to clear his throat.
"Ahem, could you please explain to the Mayor your accounts, heard or interpretation, of the events detailed here? "

If eye's could beg, Cass's would've been grovelling, for the man to play ball with him. He needed a talk to at least start, for the ball to start rolling.

Red kept a steady pace as he followed the group out of the village. The lively sounds of merchants haggling and townsfolk chatting faded behind them, replaced by the rhythmic crunch of boots on the worn dirt road. His expression was calm, but his mind churned, analyzing the situation as it developed.

The Mayor’s firm resolve and Rosette’s sharp focus gave him some confidence in their ability to handle what lay ahead. Cass, seemed less concerned, his attention split between fiddling with the letter and whistling a discordant tune. Albeit only just having met him, Red felt somewhat confident in his character judgement skills; Cass’s casual demeanor could potentially mask a surprisingly deft hand in navigating tense situations.

As they approached the large shade tree, Red’s senses sharpened. The group of mercenaries emerged from behind it, their leader stepping forward with a calculated swagger. Eight men. Their worn yet well-maintained gear and deliberate movements suggested more experience than common bandits, though they carried the same air of danger. The scarred leader’s taunting tone left little doubt about his intentions.

Red’s gaze swept the scene, noting the way the mercenaries positioned themselves and the confidence in their body language. Something about the situation felt off—not just the inherent tension, but a faint, inexplicable sense stirring in his mind as they drew closer. It wasn’t a warning of danger exactly, but an awareness he couldn’t yet name, as though stepping closer would reveal something hidden just out of reach.

Cass moved forward, interjecting himself into the conversation with his usual theatrical flair. Red let him take the lead, betting that his strange way of handling people—equal parts charm and mischief—could often diffuse hostility where force might fail. However, when Cass gestured dramatically toward him and Rosette, Red met the mercenaries’ gaze with an unreadable expression. His calm, steady presence wasn’t physically intimidating, but in this case it might make their opponents second-guess their actions. Stepping forward slightly, he addressed the leader directly.

"Your grievances are noted," he said, his voice steady and even. "You’ve made them clear enough, but this isn’t the way to resolve them. You have an opportunity to speak your case and be heard—or you can waste it by resorting to threats. That’s your choice."

With that, Red stepped back, positioning himself near Rosette. He stood relaxed yet attentive, making no aggressive moves but ready to react if needed. Despite the calm exterior, the strange sensation lingered in the back of his mind, growing stronger the closer he was to the mercenaries. It was as though something about them called to him, a feeling that left him both intrigued and cautious.

"Oh yeah, knife-ear? If I remember the last time we met face to face like this, it was in the tavern where you stopped me from getting my free drinks." The captain spoke as he was then interrupted by Cass. Whose tone was much more friendly and relaxed than it had been before, which caused Aurae to cock an eyebrow though she kept an eye on the captain himself. "Don't presume you know my mind," He paused as he stepped back away from Cass with a glint of murder in his eyes. "Due this knife-ears letter to the guild we were thrown out and resorted to this, If I had the chance to do it again I would have ran her through at the tavern," He spoke with venom in his voice as he was handed the paper he looked down at it and tossed it to the side.

"What is there to explain? We had it good until she showed up. The merchants were all walking the line, giving us our dues." The captain spoke as his eyes shifted to see the other two moving. Though it was plain to see the captain was much more of a brute than one to negotiate for anything, especially after the election events. When Red came up and spoke there was a snort of dismissal.

"So how is this going to end then? Are you going to attempt to run me through now and add an even bigger target on your back, or are you going to be rational here?" Aurae inquired as she kept her hand on the hilt of her sword. The tension itself was starting to thicken almost to the point one could cut it with a knife. She was hoping to avoid blows but it there was no other ways then it was going to have to be that way.

"I mean, I could cut you down here and then my boys can reap what they deserve, we should have drained the town much faster than we should have," He spoke as he filed his arms across his chest.

"If you do that, once again, the target will be much larger, and you won't be able to get into anywhere outside of small hamlets. Not to mention, if anyone comes across the scenes and then you go to the village, I think many people will draw the line, so do you really want to add murder to your long record, or will you walk away?" Aurae inquired as she used Pass Judgement hoping to convince him to just leave before any violence happens.

Rosette listened intently to the dialogue between her new friends, the mayor, and the mercenary spokesman. She shouldered her rifle, and took careful aim at the nearest threat to her. Her index finger resting against the gently curving trigger; she was now ready to destroy what lay before her. Her mindset shifted from cautionary observation into full combat mode as she looked through her rifle sights. Her face was set firm with the resolve to take lives, and to have her life taken in return should fortune decide her time in the world was over. A small smile found it's way on her lips and her eyes sparkled with deadly anticipation. Despite her readiness for action she also felt a small sense of regret, though it didn't show on her face. She knew that her new friends and the Mayor had wanted a peaceful end to things, and she felt bad that things didn't seem to be going that way. Now that the criminals full suppression was near at hand she felt both immensely excited and immensely troubled.

" Good Sir! I implore you to take the Mayor's offer of amnesty! You are lucky to leave with only a loss of employment. You criminals deserve to die or to rot in imprisonment!" She declared " What fools would give up their freedom or their lives for so trivial a thing as revenge over a lost job!?!"

Her sweet vice strained with being raised much more loudly than she was used to but she still continued.

" My friends, and the Mayor both spent ages looking for a path to a peaceful end. That is the only reason I am bothering with you! Take her offer and leave this place!" She continued passionately " The wages of sin are death you fools! and I am the angel sent down to gather your lives for judgement! Don't you understand! You are throwing away your lives!"

Cass Garret

"Sorry for presuming you gave a damn about your men."

Cass angrily grumbled out to the subtle inclinations that the man did not in fact have the same priorities he did. Before him was murder and anger all swallowed into one damned being, which was fine for one but what of the many, what of those under one's duress. Brought to a front from the boiling nature of isolation. Grievances he'd heard grumble like the mere eviction from a drinking hole becoming a grave offence in the mind of an mad bull; however without its horns what point was it. if the Captain weren't taking the words of Aethelred, Aurae or he, maybe the men would.

With the Captain's dismal of the letter lending Cass to have to bend over to pick up the thoroughly roughed letter and stuff it into his pocket (it was borrowed afterall.) A moment taken to ruffle his hat, an ineffective stress reliever but better than tapping his gun. Aurae's response to the Captain's bravado seemed reasonable, honestly more reasonable than he would've been in her position, probably a dirty politician thing that came with absence of soul. Still, Cass was optimistic but not so optimistic to believe that'll work at this stage.

Looking over to Rosette and Aethelred when the former spoke up. Funny, she seemed to be the more unhinged of the pair by far. Angels of war and all that dramatic stuff(Cass wouldn't ever be so dramatic. ). Still, she was helping, probably. Meanwhile Aetherlred on watch, unfortunate he didn't have giant obvious weapon as well to read from.

So Cass after affixing his hat turnt to address the unaddressed so far, the men the Captain had under his employ. Deciding on a different approach. If he couldn't get a peaceful option via the high-ground best to strike low.

"What of you, the men that follow this Captain. Are you happy to die following a man who's seemed to only brought dishonor and further regulations of your freedoms, all to happy to throw them away over trimmed extortion? A man who is in all to good of a position to use and flay you until you are nary of bone or marrow, A man who's just said that he spared nary a thought of you. " And so Cass lied. Ange and outrage in his robotic voice(or at least its best facsimile) akin to an particularly outraged preacher to a rising mob. "I personally have looked abound the total taken earnings from your extortionist periods my friends, leaving one question what are you still doing here? A ragged band masquerading through the woods as scoundrels yet without the wealth to show. Almost as if someone's been pocketing it, would you know? I bet that's why he don't gamble as much as the rest of you, to hide the obscene wealth he keeps stashed somewhere."

'And if he does its a sign he has too much' The obvious opposite retort if the Captain tried to defend himself, 'He's being too protective' if he does it too desperately, and if he attacks Cass, well that's practically a omission of guilt. The cowboy playing this game with a concerning amount of familiarity, it weren't the first time he dragged a man down to pull himself. He cared for them, enough to lie or condemn one of them to save the rest. Maybe there was danger in that- but he was right.

"Not to mention how that past Mayor has eluded you to live a good life in the big city. He gets to recount the story of how a band of mercenary paid him shillings to make a quarter in-between drinking outta his golden glass. How is it if you are so outraged as to the current Mayor for winning and not the Last for losing. Think about that, this fatcat grinning in his luxurious manor as you make chaos for his rival, laughing all the while in between some nice wine that he got it all for free- no he got it for your money. It's outrageous! He should've been paying you from the start but instead you were paying him to enforce taxes! And lets not mention that Ratmancer fiasco." His passionate words spilling out in a long lengthy speech, turning to face the Captain directly in the middle of his speech before finally catching his breath. Cass knew what he was implying. Cowardice and deceit, implying the Captain was stealing money or too much of a coward to actually attack the real culprit of their money loss. The Captain would think him a traitor, that was fine, it was Cass's goal to make his merc friends to think the Captain was the same.

"If you wish to pursue you dreams whether gold or profit take the offer at hand to move on! Whether to gut that mayor who I personally lead you to or to better pastures, it will surely be better than here, a useless death in foolish fight under a greedy man."

'And you'll need to get a new Captain with him gone' the grim thought put into Cass's mind, greed- no, not greed, Cass wasn't greedy he just knew what was best for people. If they took him up on his offer, well they'll probably cool off on the journey and if not. This his final desperate attempt, if Aurae's consolation didn't work, Rossete's threatening and whatever Aethelred's got up his sleeve to gamble on. Cass hoped this multi-pronged attack would work...God, he hated politics.

Aurae kept her hand on the sword around her hip as she waited to see what the Captain would do. However, it seemed like he was trying to determine his chances of winning if a fight broke out. She turned her head as she heard what Rosette was saying behind her. She still hoped that this could be handled diplomatically, but that was still yet to be seen, and then that was when Cass started to speak to the group. She kept her eyebrow raised at the true nature of Cass' connection with the former mercenaries, to which she started to tap the hilt of her sword.

"What do you mean what are we doing here? We lost our livelihoods, even with the money we made that doesn't fill out the money that we now lost all the future profits that we could have been making Cass. We all got our pay now, and some might have been skimped off the top by you. Besides you were the one who was always timid about what was going on in the town," One of the men shouted back.

The captain laughed at the mayor comment, "You think the mayor was the one pulled one on us? The mayor was our puppet boy, and he got a small payment to look the other way occasionally. This manor you think he is living in is a lie because we ran into him on the way back here to exact our revenge on the whole matter." However, three of the men slowly started to back away from the group and disappeared from sight. leaving 5 individuals that are left. Now that their numbers had been lowered to some to the captain, looked back over his shoulder and glared at those that left.

"Well it looks like captain that some of your men would rather take their money and leave," She responded as the captain clamped down on his teeth. The tensions were further rising now that probably even a knife wouldn't be able to cut through it. Probably one single more push was all that was going to need to either be a fight or one side backing down. "Last chance leave or there will be a fight and this 'knife-ear' isn't going to just lay down," She stated as she used Pass Judgement to further push the envelope.

The air around the groups seemed to go quiet, even the birds normal songs seemed to fade away. Then the captain broke the silence, "Fine, well leave alright boys lets leave there is not profit to be made here. Lets head to the Eastern Empire I'm sure we could hunt down a few escaping slaves," The captain spoke as he slowly backed off and so did his men until hey reached the far tree line and disappeared from sight.

To which Aurae let out a small sigh of relief and let her hand drop to the side as her retainers moved forward and looked around to make sure no archers were hiding somewhere.

For a few moments the tension was super high. Rosette listened to Cass' speech and to the response from his intended audience. She listened to the Mayor and marveled inwardly as a few of the men cut and run. She had been very certain that she would have had so many more to kill but as things often do in life, they took an unexpected departure from the planned route. She took a deep breath into her small frame, enjoying the scents of the forest and of the oil used to lubricate her rifle. Her finger drifted from the curved steel of the rifles trigger to rest once more along the trigger guard. Her eyes kept careful watch as the mercenaries disappeared back from whence they had come. After a few moments she sighed in relief.

" Well, dare I say that went well." She very brightly commented in her sweet voice. " Master Cass, I must say, you got on quite well with these ragtag fellows. Were you perhaps a politician at some point?"

She gave a bright smile to any who looked her way as she lowered her rifle to a more relaxed but still ready position.

" I rather thought we might have to kill the lot of them." She continued brightly. " Perhaps, upon our return, you will allow me to prepare the afternoon tea service for everyone Mayor Faren?"

Rosette was not a girl accustomed to high diplomacy, but tea service was something she was very practiced at. Tea service and the taking of lives. Now at least with the mercenaries seemingly dealt with she would be able to continue her travelling. On the other hand she was still very cautious. These men would not be the first ones to lay an ambush or to feign a retreat. She was sure the Mayor was well aware of such potential, not to mention her new comrades. Still she couldn't help but feel the rising concern. There was no doubt that these men were criminals. Men Of the lowest and most based of orders. She was sure they would cause more trouble for the mayor eventually. Though now she knew to avoid the East Empire.

Red had remained quiet throughout the standoff, observing the back-and-forth with his usual calm but attentive demeanor. Tensions hung heavy in the air, crackling with the promise of violence. His instincts warned him that the smallest misstep could send everything spiraling into chaos.

As the captain ranted about revenge and spat insults, Red's eyes narrowed slightly, taking in the brute's every move and the reactions of his men. The captain was a bully, plain and simple, but it was the others—those who followed him—that concerned Red more. Desperation could make people dangerous, especially when mixed with wounded pride and the false bravado of a cornered animal.

As for his companions; Cass’s fiery speech, dripping with calculated disdain, drew murmurs from the mercenaries. Red caught the subtle shifts in their body language: some glancing at one another uneasily, a few taking small, shuffling steps back. Doubt was starting to creep in—even if the captain refused to see reason, his grip on his crew seemed to be slipping.

Rosette’s impassioned outburst, contrasting sharply with her previous quiet demeanor, caught Red’s attention next. Her words were a mix of righteous fury and barely veiled threats, delivered with an intensity that might have unnerved a lesser man. Her readiness to deal death was evident in her posture, her rifle still poised with deadly precision. Red felt a pang of unease. This girl, with her bright voice and delicate manners, was a far more dangerous presence than her dainty frame suggested. And as for the mayor, she'd been as steady and resolute as ever. Her calm defiance and firm logic made it clear that she would not hesitate to strike if it came to that, with Red not failing to to notice the way she kept her hand near her sword. It spoke volumes about her readiness for a fight, yet her tone conveyed a faint hope that violence could still be avoided.

When Cass’s pointed accusations hit their mark, the captain’s men hesitated, their loyalty shaken. Red noticed three of them break away and vanish into the woods. The tension seemed to tighten even further as the remaining mercenaries exchanged nervous glances, clearly uncertain about their next move. Aurae’s cutting observation about the deserters only deepened the rift, and when the captain finally relented, his bitter words were more bark than bite.

As the mercenaries retreated, Red kept his posture relaxed but his eyes trained on their every move. He wasn’t convinced they wouldn’t double back or try something underhanded, and only once the last of them disappeared into the trees did he let out a soft breath, his body easing from its subtle readiness. When Rosette spoke up, Red turned toward her, his expression unreadable. Her sudden shift from fiery determination to bright chatter was almost jarring. The contrast was striking, but Red had already pegged her as someone full of surprises. He offered her a faint smile but said nothing, his mind still running over the events of the standoff.

"Well done, all of you," he said after a moment, his tone low and even. "I don’t think we could’ve asked for a better outcome, considering how things started. Let’s hope they don’t get any ideas about doubling back." Red’s gaze shifted to Aurae, the little minions in his mind shuffling around, searching for something to say that fit the situation. "You kept your cool under pressure, mayor. That probably made all the difference," he concluded in the end with a nod.

Red turned his attention to Cass, a glimmer of respect in his gaze. "That speech of yours—well, you didn’t just talk. You hit them where it hurts. Gave them plenty to think about and more than enough reason to question their captain. If I were him, I’d be watching my back right about now."

Finally, he turned to Rosette. "You’ve got a way with words yourself, though maybe next time, save the ‘angel of death’ routine for when we’re sure it’s going to come to blows." His tone was light, almost teasing, though there was an undercurrent of sincerity in his words.

Red glanced toward the treeline where the mercenaries had disappeared, his hand idly brushing against the bark of a nearby tree. He still felt the faint pull he’d noticed earlier, a strange awareness he couldn’t quite place. It was something to think about later. For now, he focused on the others. "Let’s not linger. If they’re smart, they’re gone for good. But if not… well, best we’re not still standing here when they figure that out."
