Fantasy Mediums - magic school for summoners

Francesca Lockheart by Demonsoul Demonsoul is accepted. You already know most of my thoughts on the character, and I look forward to seeing her in action, though I still think white hair is silly.

Basil... Hibiscus by Aeshae Aeshae is accepted, despite terrible naming conventions and smelling a bit too close to generic faceless protagonist material. We'll see how he shapes up once things get rolling. Chalk as a medium, not something I'd come up with. That could be an interesting one.

Misaki Himegami by RoyalPhoenix32 RoyalPhoenix32 is currently not accepted. While I am all for taking on a character with crippling depression, what I have here before me is just crippling depression without any character I can find attached to it. The questions in the acceptance letter are generally meant to give the instructors a peek into the heads of the incoming students, but what Misaki wrote down is troubling to the point hat it's unlikely the school would have reached out to her at all. Her answers might as well read: I got a dead twin, hey dead twin here, btw my twin died, did I mention that my twin died? It's just painful to read, and not for the reasons it could be. Setting that gripe aside, I also have to ask what she means in her goal, and I suppose her answer to the magic question as well. You also forgot to put in the character's medium and the shape their summon will take. Whatever help you need on the road to hammering this into a workable character, just let me know.

Wait a minute... Dead mom, dead parents, dead twin (and parents?). I swear everyone on this site hates their parents or something. It's the only explanation for how often they feel compelled to kill off those of their characters. I swear there are anime protagonists or even DC comic heroes with better track records of keeping family members alive.

Fixing Misaki and trying to think on what animal to go for. Torn between crimson butterfly, a horse, and a crimson butterfly dragon (small and able to fit in a small bag).

You people really have a death fetish.

Essie Amhearst by Ascarer Ascarer is accepted. I like the family dynamic presented. But seriously, death fetish. You people have a problem. Aside from that unexpected speed bump, most of the questions are having the expected answers.

I have to ask, why zinc?

Sorry if you think about that about the death fetish thing, I've had people pass away in my life and I've just kind of sprinkled a few things from real life into my character to help make it realistic since I know how it feels. And it said their most painful memory, so it just helped me put a simple and not even that rare of an occurrence that happens in people's life sometimes. Never really planned on bringing it up at any other time really. That was like one of the only deaths that happened in this character's life.

As for zinc, I was planning to go with copper because I thought it was be interesting, although the more I thought about it, the less I liked the idea of copper. Considering like, even in pennies now there isn't much copper and that it's expensive. Zinc is one of the biggest components in pennies, so that means it's easier to acquire and seemed interesting.

Please send me a PM explaining what the whole deal is surrounding Misaki. I'm all for characters having their own stories, but I honestly have no clue where you're going with hers.

Aside from that, her summon is a bit unusual. Her twin's hairclip is unusually specific for a medium, and if it were to be destroyed, either by the summoning process or in general, she'd be out of luck. If you still wish for that to be her medium we can make it work, but there will be hoops she'll have to jump through. As for the shape, I'm going to have to say no to a butterfly dragon. And do keep in mind that the summon is physically made of the same material as the medium.

finished with Misaki. Still debating on either going for one of three mentioned. Trying not to be overly strong with her.
"Strong" doesn't really apply here. For the most part, all of your summons will be equally useless in terms of any sort of fighting. By the time that is no longer the case your characters will have been taught plenty of ways to cover their weaknesses and boost their effectiveness.

The medium itself is much more important than the actual shape of the resulting summon. The only real reason for a summon to have any shape at all is to put an additional layer of separation between the summoner and the magic they're using.

That puts us at 4 accepted characters, just one away from the 5-10 range I was hoping to hit to get started.

Yo lurkers, git in 'ere!

Let's just give this a bump. I'd like to get at least one more character to start.

Jesse McAllister by QuirkyAngel QuirkyAngel is accepted. I appreciate him having his own life and goals already, and that him falling into this story might not align with that goal at all. It should be interesting at the very least.

The medium will need to be changed though. No part of a living creature (plants being the occasional exception) is allowed as a medium, so hair is out, and especially no human hair. That'd open a huge can of worms, one I'd rather keep stored away for later.

@ everyone
That puts us at the goal! Yay! I'll work on getting everything set up to start with IC posting later today if time permits. Don't worry if you wanted to get a character up still, I will announce when this is no longer accepting characters. In all likelihood you have a few more days, but do try to get your character in sooner rather than later.

I see. Silk is out then.

hmm, does gum work?

Edit: Glad you think so. Attending a magical institution might alter his goals, but I doubt it. He'll just return to the normal world after 4 years with some new party tricks. Or start his own Broadway in the magical world.

Course, silk was my second choice, so I'm perfectly happy with its acceptance^^

Gum is my third choice.

...silk is made from silkworms, isn't it? Spiderwebs are also made from silk.
I should probably do a better job of explaining why I said no to hair. It's not that it doesn't work as a medium. Hair, so long as it's cut, is a perfectly valid medium. Hell, no one would bat an eye at something made of human hair being used as a medium. But the closer a material is to something alive, and especially human, the more it's frowned upon. Dead things and the mechanics behind mediums' summons do not go together well. And no one likes necromancers, they're creepy.

Gotcha~ That's interesting if you want want to add a bit of politics and magical discrimination to the plot (When I picked human hair as a medium, I imagined it separated from the body. Fallen pieces of hair, hair from a brush, or maybe a strand he's plucked from his own head, etc.) By no means would he do something that resulted in the death of another. But I've changed him to silk and a snake since I've no desire to make things complicated nor do i want to mess with the mechanism of magic.

Without further ado, I declare this RP started! Please adjust the pickup time for your character's timezone (based on 1PM EST). Every character will have been picked up and deposited at the Halfway House at approximately the same time. Whether or not they specifically handed the man their things, their bags will no longer be with them.

Keep in mind that each sheet is only meant to be used by 3-4 students, and Sadako has taken a spot on one. But really, just act however your characters should.

Oh right, I should probably mention that the OOC is up and running as well. It's linked from the main thread, but I never put up a notice.

This RP will be closed to new characters as soon as the scene moves on from the front yard. At that point I'll simply populate the rest of the class with NPCs, along with a few of my own pieces to move around. If you still want to join please post your interest.
