Nozomi Hikari
*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙˚.·͙̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥̩̩̥͙ ✩ ̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥̩̩͙‧͙ .˚•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙˚*

There was a lot happening.

Neon lights, chattering voices, Moo’s dramatic march toward the basketball game, Yume’s telepathy stunt, and two cards—two!—slapping down over her own.

And somehow, the most overwhelming part of all was seeing Demeter, without hesitation, drape herself across Kota’s tails like they were the world’s fluffiest sofa cushions.

Hikari blinked.

Then blinked again.

“Oh,” she said softly, her tone more of a reflex than anything else.

Her fingers still hovered near the credit card she’d laid down—a sleek, black signal of intent to take care of her friends—but now it was completely eclipsed beneath Rios’s and Kota’s.

She didn’t take it back.

Instead, she just left it there. Quietly. Stubbornly.

If someone let her cover a milkshake or some fries, she’d call it a win.

She tried to speak, but her brain didn’t quite catch up. There was something weirdly intimate about someone else paying on her behalf. Not bad. Just… flustering. And she wasn’t sure if her cheeks were pink from the overlapping cards or from watching Demeter curl up against Kota like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Not that she was jealous.

She wasn’t.

Just—well—

He was warm, and familiar, and he always had a way of putting her at ease.

And she’d never laid her head on his tails. Not once. Not even during club overnights. And Demeter was just—

A faint pink flickered to her ears as she turned her attention sharply back to the menu.

The thoughts slipped unbidden into the group’s mental link, echoing faintly like wisps of soap bubbles. Probably harmless. Hopefully forgettable.

She quickly reached for a water glass instead of saying anything more, hiding behind it for a sip. Then she gave a bright—maybe too bright—smile.

“W-Well, sounds like the food’s sorted then.” She laughed lightly, gesturing to the little mountain of cards and Moo’s wad of crumpled bills. “I guess we’re all in this together now.”

Then Rios, deadpan as ever, asked if they were fighting something.

That actually pulled a real laugh from her.

“Not unless you want to challenge Moo to a shooting match,” she replied, casting a glance toward their captain. “But that might be hazardous to your pride.”

And then, as if to confirm it, she caught Demeter’s mischievous grin across the table.

Her eyes flicked to Kota—who, for better or worse, seemed to be… content.

That made her heart both ache and settle at once.

Her lips pressed together in a soft smile as she gently leaned her elbow on the table and glanced at the game area.

“So, what should we play first?” she asked, trying to keep her voice light and full of cheer. “Something chaotic like dance battles or laser tag? Or should we ease in with Celestial Fighters X?”

Her fingers brushed the edge of her necklace—the tiny wolf charm cool against her collarbone—and she didn’t even realize she was smiling.

Just as she was about to ask if anyone wanted to try the claw machines after food, her phone buzzed.

“Hm?” She blinked, glancing down to see her father’s name lighting up the screen.

Uh-oh.

She hesitated for a heartbeat, then quickly answered, bringing the phone to her ear with a practiced, polite tone.

[INCOMING CALL — TAKEDA NOZOMI]

“Otou-sama? Is everything alright?”

“Hikari! You sound tired. Are you studying too much again? Or is this one of your student council things?” His voice boomed through the line, warm and doting with a timbre that was both fatherly and mildly intimidating—especially when it was followed with:
“I hope you’re not forgetting to eat. Or smile. Or sleep.”

Hikari’s cheeks warmed. “I’m fine, Otou-sama. I’m at the arcade with friends. We’re… unwinding.”

There was a pause. Then—

“Is Rios with you?”

“Ah—yes. He’s here too.”

“Good! I was just talking to his father this morning—wonderful man. We agreed you’re going to end up marrying him someday.”

The words hit her like a spell to the face.

“Wh—Otou-sama—!” she choked, almost knocking her water glass over in the process.

Her mind betrayed her instantly with an image—her, in a wedding kimono, standing next to Rios in ceremonial robes, probably still holding his sword, completely deadpan as always.

Her face went crimson.

She glanced around the booth in a panic, praying no one else could hear the conversation… or worse, see the mental slideshow currently short-circuiting her brain.

“He’s got discipline, drive, and a good heart. Was practically made for you, you know. That boy’s a keeper!”

Hikari pressed a hand over her eyes.

“Yes, Otou-sama,” she muttered, mortified.

“Wonderful. Be home by ten. I’ll make curry.” Click.

She slowly lowered her phone to the table, face burning. The room hadn’t changed. Everyone was still chatting, Moo was still plotting to defeat a basketball machine, and no one had (yet) teased her mercilessly.

But her soul had, in fact, left her body.

She coughed into her hand and reached for her drink again.

Nope. Definitely not thinking about weddings.

She was thinking about claw machines.

Definitely.

…Right?

~ Telepathy speech ~

…And people sure were great at keeping their thoughts to themselves! It was almost like telling people not to think out loud made it harder not to do so~! Then again, to someone like Yume, these thoughts were pretty basic: obvious stuff that one could just as easily use eyes to read, without relying on a psychic misthought. But she was also pretty observant, in that sense.

"Why do nyou always myention my lack of tails when nyou forget me nya!?" she sighed, shaking her head and keeping up the ruse. She, in fact, had a whole fanfic related to Kota and her, which was fairly in-depth. For… teasing consistency, naturally.

"Nyo way, oniichan! If Hikari-chan wants to be an anyagel anyd pay, we nyeed to let her nya!" All of Yume’s over-reactions aside, she was all-too happy to accept the offer, ordering a soda and some fries.

Sadly, her psychic chat wasn’t working super well. The strange girl was pretty much just saying what she felt aloud, with no speech impediment messing with things. Plus, the stunt clearly had the slight side-effect of blasting Rios (and the others) with Hikari’s deep desire to swap places with Demeter. That part was more of an entertaining bonus, though.

And it only got even more crazy from there…! Wedding ceremonies, arranged marriages. Yume definitely should’ve cut off the chat several seconds ago, but this was way too juicy. Eventually, she was left just staring at Hikari with a silly grin,

~ "I swear none of you listen to me sometimes…" ~ she shook her head slowly, still with that amused look.

Kota would watch as both him and Rios places their cards down at the same time. Raising an eyebrow to the swordsman.

“Rios, I’ve got the bill. Don’t worry about it! You already gave me some food. I insist. Your money's no good here either.” His face was kind but his posture grew ridge., Not backing down an inch. It was the principle of the situation, protect and provide. What it means to be an anchor and dependable. This applies to every realm of life. Whether it was in a friend group, a sports team, or in a fight. These were principles he was raised on since a child. He had the upmost respect for everyone at the table and by no means thought any less of them.

He’d look at Yume with a smirk, “because, you’re supposed to be my sister but you don’t have a single tail. And you’re making a lot of cat noises.”He chuckled, “and if I’m around, no one pays but me.”He interjected towards his copycat.

His attention would be broken up by Demeter, who surprisingly took him up on the offer. Diving head first into the sea of tails, she’d find they smelled minty and refreshing. A concoction of essential oils and creams were used to maintain a healthy, shiny coat on them. She even went the extra mile and slipped under his arm. From the way she spoke and carried herself, he didn't expect her to be such a hugger but here they were.

Her thoughts were clear to him, her calmness, how secure she felt, even the longing she had for a big brother figure. It filled the Fox up with a new found sense of pride. He didn’t have any siblings so for Demeter to take to him so quickly made his tails swoosh happily.

“And here I thought you were going to turn me down.”Kota smiled, returning the hug and her emotions down the telepathy bone. That was his little sis from then on, meaning she will have to deal with Kota in his entirety.

“Let’s see if you’ll still feel just as excited during the season when I’m sweaty and comparatively stinkier.”He joked, bringing her into a huddle.

“I’ll do you one better, Moo is a real sore loser. You want to really throw her off. Challenge her and beat her in some hoops.” Kota smiled, “She would be seething knowing a new player beat her. But you’d garner her respect, and if you’re worrried about shooting, I’ll teach you.” He’d release her from the huddle.

Turning his head in the direction of Hikari, he’d notice she still left her card on the table but she’s gone quiet. He studied her expression for a moment however he’d find the answers coming to him with little effort. Her thoughts about having someone pay for her, how she never got to touch his tails, envy laced her face and mind.

If he knew sooner, he’d have offered her first. The thought flooded down the telepathy line before he quickly occupied his mind with something else. His eyes would quickly focus on Moo whom was studying the basketball machines, attempting to play off the thought.

After a moment he would sneak a glance at Hikari whom was on the phone now, hoping she didn’t hear the thought. Though her expression seemed much more petrified, and then it hit him, harder than truck-kun did. He heard it, and perhaps he might’ve bitten his tongue if Hikari appeared happier as opposed to petrified. His skin burned, and his chest tightened. The pit he had been ignoring in his stomach grew to the size of a crater.

“I’ll meet you and Moo at the hoops.”He patted the green bean on her head. Before turning back to the table. He didn’t want to put her on the spot but he could tell she was distressed, but this was unlike the usual council problems or school troubles. It was dire.

“Want to help me grab some game cards for everyone, Hikari? Pretty hard to play without them.”

After recieving a response from Hikari, Griffin searched around and entered the building. Did as instructed and was pointed towards their table. To their surprise a lot more people were invited then either anticipated.

”i’m here! Sorry for my lateness. Greetings Rios ! I haven’t seen you since that one time… Hey Hikari! KOTA! its been awhile old friend, and you two I believe we haven’t meet.” Aurora added in the last part looking at Demeter and Moo.

”Nice to meet you both! I’m Aurora. And I’m Griffin. To avoid confusion because we were already called a theatre student…D.I.D” ‘D.I.D’ was the disorder assiocated with multiple personalities. And they thougt it was saner then explaining Aurora was dead and Griffin was a robot.

They gave Yume a stink look. Which didn’t do much but hide the inner turmoil. As their thoughts exhanged between themselves internally.

’We don’t know her?’

’My programming does?’

’maybe just instinct?’

Weird. agreed. Agreed.’

“Lot more people then we expected! How is everyone’s day?”

Kota<3 was happy to see her!! This already was the best day evah!!! Noelle felt giddy when her hottie crush greeted her. Soon the group went inside. The basketball captain Moo was eager to order a strawberry milkshake even before the group found themselves a booth to sit at. It was a bit endeering to see.
Hikari was to the rescue with that. Approaching a staff member to reserve a booth in her name. The group settled down and Hikari flashed the mighty [daddy’s credit card] relic. She was going to pay for the group this evening bless her heart. Noelle started to think about what she wanted to have. Yume was still pretending she was a catgirl and tried to appear as if the card blinded her. Noelle didn’t pay it any attention. But when she spoke her name like she knew the mermaid Noelle’s eyes flashed towards the drill-haired menace. "You know my name! how?" She tried to ask Yume but was interrupted by Hikari when she noticed Noelle that Grifin was coming and that they were to go do karaoke with Openia and Echoette "<yay!! Karaoke with Miss Songbird. This is going to be fun!!>" She said excited "<will… will everyone else also come along?>" The movement of her eyes betrayed what she actually meant with that last question. She was wondering if Kota<3 most of all would come along to the karaoke.

Speaking about hottie. Kota<3 and Rios, as the gentlemen they are, offered to cover the whole bill instead. Noelle didn’t know what to think of this. And she had little to care with it anyway. At the end of the day, her food is going to get paid. "Thank you Rios" She said dreamily but then she noticed Hikari’s sad look. [empathy F] Hikari was just wanting to look out for her friends. Noelle understood. "<Hikari-chan. You pay for my food okay?>" she said to her friend. How much she would love to have her crush pay for her food. She couldn’t let her friend be sad. "I want cheez borgar and peachy booba tea!" she exclaimed as a statement of her food order.

Everything seems to have been sorted. Food was ordered, Moo had wandered off to play a hoop game and Noelle hadn’t noticed Yume tethering everyones minds to a central hivemind like thing. Nothing noteworthy was going on in the mermaid’s mind. Just the regular elevator music thoughts and thinking Kota<3 was a hunk. But when Demeter laid her head on Kota’s<3 tails something stirred in the mermaid "How dare that Cirsium Arvense lay her seedy head on Kota’s<3 glorious tails. She is going to make them dirty with moss!" her thoughts betraying her possessive urgencies of the cute kitsune while her face just had a friendly smile. Well, an observant person might notice the slight twitch in the corner of her eyes seeing the dryad cuddle with the kitsune’s tails. Luckily Noelle’s attention was drawn away when Hikari’s phone rang. It was her father. " That your father?... HEY MISTER NOZOMI!!! HI!" Noelle said not knowing if Mister Nozomi even could hear her. As the call went on Noelle noticed Hikari become more and more disturbed. "Hikari-chan? You okay?" Noelle said worried about her friend. "<It be okay. Let’s have fun this evening>" Noelle put her arms around Hikari pulling her in a hug.

"Why would we listen to you Drills? Who are you anyway?" she spoke in thought to Yume complaining as if she had done it before, which she did. This mind-link was something they often used during cheerleading to keep coordination during their routine.
Noelle looked up when another person(s) came. "Hey Griffin. You late! Sit! Hikari pay for food" she said to the lion man.

Yume

~ Telepathy speech ~

Yume pouted as she noticed Demeter slip in and steal her prized fake title. ~'Really!? After all this effort to ap— oh, whoops...!'~ she caught herself before the thoughts further manifested themselves 'aloud.' She did, after all, have quite a bit more practice than... well, anyone.

"You are just no fun today, Kota!" Yume pouted, crossing her arms. "How many accessories do I need to buy before you'll believe me?" she added, dropping the ruse. "Well, whatever, I'll just—"

A wild Griffora appeared! "Pretty good! Would be better if Fluffytails was more gullible," Yume shrugged, enjoying the internal confusion that Griffora 'displayed.'

Turning to Noelle, Yume narrowed her eyes. "You can be very unpleasant to strangers, Fishsticks," she answered aloud to the thought that hadn't been. "Lucky for us, we're strangers no longer, 'cuz I finally finished it! Tada~!" Yume reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a string bracelet made of seashells, handing it over to Noelle. "You just wear it on your wrist, give it a little tap, and you should remember our best moments! Just let me know if we make a new memory you'd like to keep. Sadly, it doesn't remember them on its own. Hope you like it, though! I made it extra oceany, just for you~" Yume smiled brightly at the fishy, genuinely hoping to solidify an old new friendship.

"And don't feel left out, Griffora, I made one for you too~" she added, revealing another made of suspiciously-familiar-looking brown feathers tied together. Yume continued to smile innocently, but unlike Noelle's bracelet, Griffora's was more what she'd call... experimental. Griffora was already fascinating, holding two people in one body, so naturally, Yume wondered how many could be stuffed in there. What would three look like? Too much?

So, rather than containing Griffora's memories of Yume, the bracelet was stuffed with the entire core memories of a made-up character from a game she'd been playing lately. Of course, unless they had any knowledge of enchanting, there was no way of telling it was a lie, other than simply distrusting Yume.

MOO

The battle was on. Moo glared at her toughest opponent to date. She had slained the other schools, been chosen over the fox boy to lead her team, clashed with the armored baller, there was no challenge she hadn't overcome before, except this son of a bitch! She still remembers that night. The day she had made the team when her horns were still small and she hadn't hit her growth sprout yet. The defeat she experienced that day almost ruined her life.

Moo had been offered a spot on the team for her exceptional show of athletics in P.E. It took her days of training to understand the game and more days to get a good handle on the ball. But when she finally went to her first game and they won, she knew what she wanted to do the rest of her life. Until that night... She had left the school late, like always, staying to practice until the janitor asked her to leave. On her way home she saw that damned machine. There was a group of boys from another school testing their skills in it. At that moment, Moo thought it was just a way to practice, not to crush her spirit. She joined the group and started playing on the machine with them, until it became competitive, too competitive. After a small tournament amongst the students, it came down to Moo and one of the boys.

"Let's make it intersting..." Moo could still hear his devil voice in her dreams sometimes. "If you win, you will be crowned the ultimate champion, but if I win, you have to quit the basketball team because you aren't worthy."

The game started, who could get the highest score on such game. It seemed that they were evenly matched at first, but once the time was half way through, the boys starting mocking Moo as she started to fall behind. Miss after miss was all she could get, getting destroyed in the process. Her basketball career was over. Moo had to explain to her coach between tears and sobs how she had lost her spot on the team. It took the coach a while to make her understand that the school doesn't follow such rules. After a few days of doubt and support from the team, Moo was back and better than ever. But the emberrassasment she went through that night, it remained in her heart forever. Until this day.

Moo slammed her hand on the start button, ready to win, ready to beat that highscore that had burned into her memory ever since that night! It was time to take it all back, to make her pride complete once more to insert tokens! "Huh?"

Moo pressed the button again. Insert Token. "Huh?!" She pressed it a few times. "Why won't it work?!" She clenched her fist until the sight of a small boy exploring the depths of his nostrils with his finger walked up to her.

"You need to buy tokens." The kid said with an expressionless face.

Moo rolled her eyes, was everything about money in this damned place? She reached into her sweater and took out another bundle of cash. "Hea, git mee sum of em trokenz." She offered the cash to the kid, who grabbed it and walked away. Moo sighed and looked back at her wretched enemy. "Jiss ya weitt. I'm way strangrr naw, ya gawing dawn." She stood there, glaring at her enemy, waiting for the darn tokens that were probably never going to arrive.

“Yes, Otou-sama…” Hikari mumbled, cradling the phone between her ear and shoulder, cheeks visibly pink. She couldn’t tell if he was serious or just teasing anymore. “It’s not— it’s not like that…”

Before she could fully finish her flustered defense, Noelle’s voice rang across the arcade like a clarion bell.
There was a pause. Then—
“Noelle-chan! Hahaha, what a lovely voice as always! Tell her to warm up properly before karaoke—don’t want to strain anything before nationals!”

Hikari groaned softly and pinched the bridge of her nose.
“I’ll tell her, Otou-sama. I’m hanging up now.”

“Alright, alright—have fun! And tell Rios I said hi! I’m still waiting on that rematch!”
Click.

She lowered the phone, very slowly.

Her father hadn’t arranged a marriage. Probably. But the teasing still echoed louder than the arcade music.

There were just… too many things happening at once.
Demeter was snuggled into Kota’s tails like a sleepy forest sprite.
Yume had just pinged her brain with an entire reel of embarrassing thoughts—
And Rios, her actual boyfriend, had simply sat there like it was all normal.

Her boyfriend.
When had that word started to sound so huge?

She glanced toward him then—really looked at him. His calm presence, his quiet support at the table, the way he’d simply added his card to hers earlier like it was the most natural thing in the world. He even brought her a necklace.

Just because.

“Oh, um—Rios,” she added quickly, glancing toward him as she brushed her hair back again. “My dad says hi. And that he’s still waiting on your rematch, apparently.”

Her eyes flicked to Kota—just in time to feel the pulse of a thought down the mindlink. One that made her ears turn pink all over again.

Oh. Oh no.

She pressed her lips together in silent mortification and dropped her head forward onto the laminated menu with a muted thunk.

Then Noelle wrapped her up in a warm side hug—and just like that, her heart stopped spinning.

“Thanks,” she whispered, the smile returning to her lips, small but genuine.

When Noelle told her she wanted Hikari to buy her food, the tears almost won.

Almost.

“Okay. One cheeseburger and peachy boba tea, coming right up.”

She laughed softly, brushing her hair back behind one ear.

Just as she was catching her breath, a new voice pulled her from her thoughts—familiar, but softer in tone.

Aurora.

“You made it!” Hikari lit up as she spotted them entering. “Aurora, right? Unless Griffin’s trying a new softboy voice again. Either way—come sit! We’re just getting started.”

She slid over to make space, nodding at their introduction with warmth.
“You’re in good company tonight. I don’t think anyone here qualifies as ‘ordinary.’”

Her gaze drifted toward Moo—currently glaring down an arcade basketball machine like it owed her money.
“Our moose is declaring war on modern machinery, but otherwise, things are great.”

And of course, Yume couldn’t resist throwing out her usual chaos. Hikari caught the tail end of her teasing and gave the other girl a Look—one eyebrow raised in a way that said: “You are a menace,” with a dash of fondness.

Still, the bracelet for Noelle was… surprisingly sweet.

“Yume, please don’t enchant this one with sea spirits like last time.” She half-teased. She still wasn’t entirely sure what the tricksy girl had done to that first test bracelet, but she did know it kept whispering about eel weddings for three days.

Kota’s voice cut through the chatter, low and steady.

Game cards. A task. A reason to stand up and breathe.

Yes, thank god.

Hikari nodded quickly, reaching for her pale pink wallet—her personal one this time—rather than the sleek black card still resting at the center of the table like an enchanted artifact.

“Right. Let’s go before Moo starts throwing hands at the change machine.”

She gave Griffin’s arm a playful tap as she passed.
“Don’t let Yume rewrite your brain while we’re gone, okay? If you come back quoting riddles in Fae-speak, I can't promise I’ll be able to fix you.”

And with that, Hikari followed Kota into the arcade glow, the click of her boots swallowed by neon buzz and laughter.

The moment Rios heard Hikari's deep desire to be the one clinging to Kota's tails. He tilted his head and raised a single eyebrow in confusion. According to his knowledge, foxkin tended to be VERY selective with who they allowed to touch their tails given how sensitive of an appendage they tended to be. Kota so easily offering it displayed a deep sense of compassion and community that the others likely took solace in. Rios wasn't really interested in Kota's fluff so he had no real opinion on it. Yet the idea of Hikari cuddled up with the white tailed fox boy gave him pause. Although he wasn't quite sure why, he didn't like that.

Hikari and Kota were friends who worked in the student council together so Rios understood how close their relationship was. The thought of the pair cozied up on a long night after a late night session of paperwork made the cyan haired youth frown slightly. Rios didn't understand this feeling in his chest but it made him worry a little. After that Griffin/Aurora appeared to join their little group. "Good to see you again" said Rios with his usual stoicism. The pair had met when the archery club had gone on an school trip with the dungeoneering club to an old ruin infested with monsters. Unlike a few of their clubmates; Griffin/Aurora's archery skills translated over to practical application very well.

The sight of Noelle the fish lady made Rios scratch his cheek in confusion as he tried to recall who she even was. He knew he'd seen and heard of her before but couldn't remember HOW. Shrugging since spending too much energy on the matter seemed pointless. Rios began eating the small plate of burgers the very tired looking waitress brought him. Easily scoffing down three burgers in a few minutes. The very active lifestyle of Rios caused his body to burn through energy quite fast given how dedicated he was to his craft. He wondered if Hikari thought he was a little weird for being so obsessed with his swords. Rios and his sisters had been engineered for the sole purpose of combat against threats to the city so his near single minded focus could come off as a little strange to others.

Speaking of combat, Hikari mentioned Old Man Takeda wanting a rematch. The pair of them would sometimes fight in the simulator at the facility with a variety of rules attached to make things interesting. Old Man Takeda usually had more fun than Rios did but the young warrior was at least happy to get some unorthodox training in. "I will cut him down in virtual space once more" stated Rios with his eyes gaining a hint of color albeit briefly. The promise of combat was usually a good way to motivate Rios. Wandering to the counter where an incredibly disinterested catkin was scrolling through his phone. Rios placed his card down for a game card to play the machines at the arcade. There he saw something truly astounding, a pair of replica swords from Beetle Samurai X. Apparently for the collab with Celestial Fighters X, the arcade was offering these swords for the price of TEN THOUSAND TICKETS. Rios grabbed his game card and dashed right past Hikari and Kota in order to get to the arcade cabinet.

The corner of Kota's mouth lifted at the sight of his feathered friend, "Griffin! Aurora! Im happy to see you two made it." he greeted back, now that they were here, the party could get started!

"It's really been a while, especially outside of school, my day's not too bad. How about yours?" he'd asked before turning to Noelle who was cheerful as ever, her pronunciation of burger extracting a laugh from the fox. The good energy was always welcomed, Yume on the other hand seemed to be more on the whiny side since her scheme wasn't going according to plan.

"None, you don't need any accessories to be my kin." he responded to her question, the little schemer would have turned to Noelle. Instructing her to tap on the bracelet on her arm. Did Yume give this to all her friends? He'd look down and see a similar bracelet with fox heads on his, the finish on it was reminiscent of a 3rd grader but he could tell though. He'd tap on it and the memories would flood back, late nights at the club room, shenanigans from earlier in the week, all the times Yume got on Hikari's nerves and he had to break it up. It poured into his head immediately like a super trippy experience.

"We're already family Vice Prez." he patted her head with a smile of acknowledgment. "But I see you're up to no good, linking up our thoughts. This is 100% an invasion of privacy someway, somehow." Yume was like a sour patch kid, a really really sour one, but once you get past the outer layers. She was sweet…sometimes…once a week maybe.

His gaze would return to Hikari whom agreed to come along, the 7 course of emotions she had a moment ago causing the fox alarm. If he had popped the question then she’d have definitely lied.

But he knew something was up [Insight F]

They’d walk alongside one another, having a moment to themselves away from the others. Once outside of earshot he’d shoot her a look, one that he gave her rarely. The look that he knew something was up and now was an opportunity to open up.

“You seemed a bit distressed at the table back there, not school or extracurricularly stressed but genuinely. Is everything alright?” He’d pose the question, his voice was strong and stern but empathetic.

He’d turn to the receptionist, “8 game cards please. Each with the giga gamer+ entertainment unlimited bundle. And charge only the card with the fox’s at that table no matter what anyone else says.” He smiled before sticking his tongue out at Hikari, “I win.”

The receptionist would disappear into the back granting them a brief moment. He didn’t imagine hanging with Hikari outside of school would end up like this. Her in a relationship, with someone else. The emotions it incurred, irrationality, jealousy. It’s entirely messed with his head, more than Yume ever did. Maybe if he asked she’d put his soul into the rabbit so he didn’t have to suffer.

He’d recall one of her earlier thoughts that popped into his head, the one that made him happy.

“Also if you wanted to hold my tails you could always just ask. He shot her a smirk.

Hikari hadn’t even realized how quiet it was until they slipped away from the table—until the clatter of voices and neon buzz softened to a hum behind them. The moment stretched out between her and Kota, familiar in the way only long friendships could be.

Then came that look.

The one that said: Don’t lie to me, I know something’s up.

Ugh. Of course he’d noticed.

She shifted on her heels, brushing imaginary lint off her skirt.
“It’s nothing, really.” Her voice was light. Too light.

She fiddled with the edge of her sleeve, eyes fixed on a nearby arcade sign blinking overdramatically.
“It's...just...Rios asked me out. And I said yes because... I don’t know. It felt like the right answer at the time.”

Her voice dropped slightly, her thoughts slipping out like steam through a cracked lid.
“But nothing really changed. We still talk about the same things. Do the same things...He’s still... Rios. Calm. Quiet. Kendo-obsessed. Kinda edgy.”

She mimed a flat hand, sighing.
“And then he just gives me a necklace out of nowhere. No explanation. Just—boom. Here.”
A short laugh escaped her, baffled and breathy.
“I was like… okay? Is this a boyfriend thing? Is that what being boyfriend and girlfriend means? Just saying the words and hoping it makes sense?”

She looked back at Kota then, eyes searching.
“At least with student council, you know what the job is. You get a title, and then you do something.”

A beat passed.

“With Rios, I don’t really know what I’m doing.”
Her voice softened.
“He’s so hard to read. Half the time, I feel like I’m guessing.”

She didn’t say what she was really thinking. That maybe she was just playing the part of a girlfriend without knowing the script. That maybe she wasn’t sure if she’d made the right choice.

But that stayed unspoken.

Instead, she turned just in time to watch Kota issue precise, sneaky instructions to the cashier.

And stick his tongue out at her.

She blinked. Narrowed her eyes.
“You really think you’re clever, huh?”

And then his words struck her.

Her mind short-circuited.

“Wh— I—!”

She turned, pink flushing from her cheeks to the tips of her ears.
“I wasn’t—!”

She absolutely was.

A part of her—sneaky, terrible, and persistent—was still thinking about his tails, and how lucky Demeter was. Would they be as soft as they looked? Would it be weird to ask? Would he even say yes if she did?

Her mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.

She coughed.

“Cards,” she said firmly, reaching into her pale pink wallet with the urgency of someone absolutely not panicking.
“I’m paying for the cards. Because someone is a devious little fox, and I am not letting that slide.”

Then, her eyes lit up with sudden clarity.

She pivoted toward him, chin lifted, tone dramatic.
“In fact—"
A beat.
"I challenge you. Celestial Fighters X. One match.”

The grin she wore now was pure Nozomi Hikari—sharp, bright, and just a little dangerous.

“If I win? I’m paying for everything.”

And maybe—just maybe—she could stop thinking about fluffy tails and feelings she wasn’t ready to admit.

Kota listened intently, his ears facing forward and tails swooshing side to side occasionally. When she tried to deflect slightly he only pressed his gaze harder, until she finally let him in. He was surprised to hear what had been bothering her. Normally, wouldn't you go out with someone you like? The thought popped into his head, confusing him slightly. Not that it wasn't hard to comprehend her situation but more so her reasoning for entering it. He felt empathy for her, the emotional limbo she seemed stuck in, the uncertainty, the anxiety.

"Do you feel like being in a relationship with him wasn't what you expected?" he proposed the question, "As for getting you a necklace, he got you something because he believed you'd genuinely like it and he put a lot of thought to show his affection. He may be brooding but it was thoughtful." he smirked, nodding to the charm in approval.

"Being boyfriend and girlfriend isn't that simple, you're courting someone in hopes you might spend the rest of your lives with them. Different from the student council which is a temporary title we hold. Neither is there any level of intimacy." It was a title he'd trade in for the one that Rios possessed, part of the reason he joined was to be next to Hikari.

"You make it sound like you're dating a stranger if you ask me." For some reason, a wash of relief washed over him coupled with guilt. Subconsciously, was he hoping they didn't work out? Did that make him a bad person, a bad friend? Even if they were both thinking the same thing? That she was making a mistake.

The uncertainty in her voice, the slight plea when she admitted how she felt in the relationship made his skin prickle slightly. It wasn't her expression but her tone.

"Communication is a large part of a relationship, you shouldn't feel like there's a wall or that you have to guess how they feel about you. If I-“ His eyes flared slightly as the words left his mouth, war raging in his eyes for a moment.

He'd blink, regaining his composure. The receptionist would return with the cards now, handing them over to Kota with a sharp smile. Knowing that he got the better of Hikari by elusively paying made him chuckle, "How lucky are you to have a genius like me around."

"Enjoy you two!"

The red on Hikari's face brought delight to the fox, his tails swaying from side to side. teasing her, "I heard it in your head, I'd give you a fox hug as well. Plus you're fumbling your words, another admission of guilt." he double downed with a wink, pressing the matter forward. It was too late to backtrack and he didn't know if he'd and when he’d get another admittance like he had back at the table.

“A wager?” The corner of his mouth curled, he enjoyed every second of the hint of danger that was laced in her face. How informal they were acting, he didn’t have to throw up a facade be be “I pretty much already payed for everything. I honestly have little inclination to take you up on that offer.” His tails swayed mischievously, letting her believe he would decline for a moment. In reality, he was thinking about what he wanted. Because his option, a date, wasn’t particularly feasible.

“I mean honestly when else would I get to pay for your food and entertainment.” Though his words said one thing his body language said another.

“I’m a generous fox so I’ll agree to your terms. On the condition that if I win. You do what I say for an entire day annnd I pay for all your meals whenever he hang out for the rest of time. I’ll even sweeten the pot and do whatever you want for an entire day if you beat me. Deal?” He smirked, his tails swaying like behind him.

“Let’s go hand out the cards so you can lose in Celestial fighters X already. Unless you’re started to get cold feet, then you can back out now.”

On the way back to the table he’d pass Moo who was locked in a staring contest with the basketball machine.

“Show the machine who’s boss capt.” he smiled passing her a game card and patting her on the shoulder before handing a Demeter one as well.

“First official basketball duty for you, don’t let capt destroy anything before I get back.” He smiled to the green bean.

He’d reach the table with a smile, handing everyone their game cards. Handing Hikari the extra one, “For Ophenia, when she comes.” He smiled as he scanned the arcade for Celestial fighters.

“Shall we?” He pointed toward the arcade machines.[/COLOR]

"Okay, but how does that help me mess with her tonight?" Demeter replied as Kota offered to help her improve her shot.

Kota's reply was a simple pat on the head and a promise to meet her over by Captain Moo, shortly. The young fae sighed, sat up, and made her way over to Moo... who gave a kid much younger than any of them some money to buy her tokens. The kid immediately- and I mean immediately, ran straight out the front door of the arcade with the widest smile you could ever imagine. Demeter watched the door for a moment; taken by a curiosity that only lingered for a few short seconds before she turned back to Moo.

"Cap, how much money did you give that kid?" a long, awkward pause, "Like, I don't think he's... I don't think he's coming back. I mean, I know I wouldn't..."

The sound of approaching footsteps drew Demeter's attention towards Kota and Hikari before a card found its way into hand. Demeter glanced at Moo and smiled; no words needed to be said. She walked on over, inserted the card, started the game up, then stepped aside to let the captain enjoy her game before the horned, muscular woman barreled through her to get to it. She made sure that the captain got in her fun.

But... not at the expense of her own, of course. A tiny seed to plant in Moo's mind.

"So Cap," she began, "You're uh... you're not gonna miss any of these wide-open freethrows here, right?"

The draconian had luckily escaped to the entertainment district despite all the haunting that were taking place. She thought she could relax there for the moment. Stormy just needed to find somewhere to relax. She looked up and down the area, noting how it was full of life and people minding their own business. At least in her old life, she was good at video games. Stormbreaker slid off the roof of a building, making her way down, using her god awful parkour skills. What she didn't expect was people staring at her directly as she plopped herself to the ground. She was in full armor in the middle of a district where people were in casual clothes. IN CASUAL CLOTHES. She was the odd one out.

"Yo, is there some sort of live action roleplay going on? That armor looks sick," came a voice from one of the bystanders. Everybody had stopped and stared before long, some even starting to film. Hell, even some random wannable influencer decided to take advantage of the situation.

"Yo, it's your boy, here live in the entertainment district! I saw some random knight walking around!" The young man said as he filmed himself filming Stormbreaker. The draconian just sighed. Stupid idiot. She ended up walked away. It wasn't long before she bumped into someone, though. Someone she didn't expect to see.

"Yo, sorry, I didn't mean to-" Then as the person turned to notice her, the draconian figured that was the VP. The mcfucking VP she had run into. Just the person she needed to see, Gunhild was like on the other side of her and they seemed to be hanging out with each other.

"W-what are you doing here?" Stormbreaker spoke. It was hard to not speak with her normal deep voice she used normally when she was fully in her vigilante outfit. It was pretty obvious this was Stormbreaker to anybody that knew her enough. Same tail, same body shape and a very similar voice. "I never thought I'd see you outside of school. Lemme guess, Gunhild been telling you I got in trouble again? What a snitch."

MOO

"Dunno." Moo replied to Demeter, wondering for a second if she should go after the kid. But then the machine flared to life. Finally! It was time! "Miss? Ya trayain ta chell-inch meh er sumtin?" She looked down at the green girl and then back at the machine. "Jus kip et aun." Moo hit the start button and the battle begun.

She had no issues getting the basketball as soon as it came out, quickly pulling it up and shooting it swiftly towards the board. Swoosh! She made the first throw, no problem. Swoosh! and another. Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh! Moo began to gain rhythm, one after another the basketball flew across the air landing one after the other. Then it happened, just like back then.

Miss! Miss! Miss! Swoosh! Miss! Miss!

Moo greeted her teeth as she lost the pacing once more. She was shooting too fast sometimes, making the basketball hit the one rolling around the hoop and knocking both away from it. The again, hitting the ring and the bounce hitting the next one incoming.

Miss! Miss! Miss!

Moo's eyes stayed focused on the hoop, her hands moving in an automatic way as she reached for the next basketball and the next. Miss! She paused, took a deep breath and waited for the ball bouncing around the ring to stop. Swoosh! Once again she made the throw and once again she began to pick up the pace.

You're half way there!

"Don't hustle me machine!" She barked backed as her muscles tensed and she started shooting, faster and faster. Miss! Miss! Miss!

Hikari barely managed to recover from the fox-tail comment before Kota doubled down with a wink, twisting the knife in her already flustered brain.
“You are insufferable.” She muttered, eyes narrowed—but her smile said otherwise.

And then came the challenge. A day of servitude? Free meals for life?
The stakes were ridiculous. The confidence?

Insufferable.

“Deal.”
She shook his hand with all the dramatic gravity of a magical girl sealing a contract with a celestial being.
“But don’t think for a second I’ll lose.”

As they returned to the main area, she offered a quick, supportive smile to Moo and Demeter—though Moo seemed locked in a life-or-death battle with the basketball machine.

“If the machine taps out, someone grab a whistle.” she quipped, pausing just long enough to hand off the extra game card before following Kota’s gaze.

And then—she saw it.

The glowing cabinet.

The twin monitors. The holographic aura shimmer. The title emblazoned in bold chrome letters:

Celestial Fighters X

Her heart skipped.
Her confidence soared.

This was her domain.

Hikari stepped forward, swiping her card with a satisfying beep and placing her hands on the controls like a queen reclaiming her throne. Her eyes didn’t just gleam—they glittered.

“Of all the games in here…” she said, her voice dripping in mock sympathy.
“You really let me pick this one?”

A sharp tap of the joystick. Three practiced button presses. She made her selection:

Seraphina Aetherblade – The Velocity Valkyrie
Twin laser épées. Star-winged grace. Frame-perfect speed.

Hikari’s entire posture changed. Her smile was wide and deadly. Her aura? Glorious.

“Hope you’re ready, Mr. Student Council Treasurer,” she quipped, cracking her knuckles.
“Because I’m about to balance this budget—with violence.”

She turned to face the screen, eyes gleaming.

Only Yume had ever come close to beating her.

And Kota?

Well, he was about to find out why they called her the Queen of Celestial Fighters.

Dice Mechanics for Celestial Fighters X Duel (2 posts each):

To keep it fast and fair, let’s use a 1d20 system with a mix of attack rolls and damage.

Setup:

Each player gets two rounds.

First to reduce the opponent's HP to 0 wins.

Both start with 30 HP.

On your turn:

1. Roll 1d20 to hit

11 or higher = Hit

10 or lower = Miss

2. If Hit: Roll 1d6 for Damage
(Feel free to flavor this with a cool move or special combo!)

Optional:

Crit (Natural 20) = roll 2d6 damage

Miss can still trigger flavor text or animations (like a dodge, block, or dramatic slow-mo fail).
