Tobias stood in front of his combat instructor. Both were sweating a great deal, however it was quite apparent that Tobias was the one that is in worse condition. His sword was held out in front of him, waiting for his instructor to launch her next attack. Sweat rolled down his forehead and into his eye, making him squint as he tried to stay focused. His instructor sprang forward, sword coming in for a stab at his chest. Of course that was a feint, and as Tobias moved to intercept, his instructor pivoted on her rear heel at the last moment, allowing her momentum to shift he stab into an elegant cross slash meant to cleave him from shoulder to hip.
Tobias saw the movement and parried the blow. As their blades danced away from each other, Tobias allowed the momentum of his sword to spin him around and moved to move into a crescent strike. His instructor saw it coming, but as she moved to intercept the move, Tobias struck out with his free hand with enough force to dishevel his instructor. Tobias saw an opening and was about to make the kill contact when he hesitated. A small wisp of air cooled the exposed skin over his throat as his instructor pressed the steel of her sword against his neck.
"What have I told you? Do not hesitate to deliver the final blow. You enemies will never show you the same mercy." And with that she lowered the sword from his throat. "When you block, you fear dying. When you dodge, you fear you can't protect yourself. When you strike, you fear killing." His instructor said as she turned her back to him and moved to the opposite side of the field. Turning back towards him, pure contempt was in her eyes.
"When you dodge, protect those that can't protect themselves. When you block, remember don't let them cut you. When you strike, kill." As she said this, her sword began to glow a deep red color as magic began to wrap itself around the blade. The magic energy was intense even from this far away, and the sounds coming from the blade was like screams of those that had fallen to its bite. "This is my resolve. My killer's instinct, reflected in my blade. If you cannot manage to do the same to yours, you will die with my next attack." Tobias' instructor shouted. Then a moment later she swung her sword towards Tobias, a thin wave of energy exploding from the blade and shooting towards him. Where the magic passed, the ground decayed and disintegrated into dust.
As Tobias watched his death shriek towards him, his instructors words echoed in his mind. Gripping his sword tighter, something within him seemed to click. Energy erupted within his soul like an exploding star. Thick blue energy erupted around Tobias' sword and with his life and soul on the line, he released his rage against his weakness. Swinging his sword forward, he released the energy. The blue energy exploded with such force that it flung Tobias backwards several feet. The second the blue energy touched the red magic of his instructor, the red magic disappeared. His instructor barely has enough time to dodge the energy blast before it slammed into the wall behind her completely destroying it in the blink of an eye and continuing through the camp for several hundred feet.
"Now you have it. The resolve to win a fight." His instructor complimented. However Tobias was on his back, asleep from exhaustion.
Present Day - -
Tobias had been dispatched to deal with some strange reports about a dragon terrorizing the city of Albarona. He didn't know exactly what he was supposed to do if he managed to find said dragon. But something told him that fate was on his side today as he watched scared city people evacuate the their homes.
