Long ago, the great goddess Sayu filled the world with life. The angelic elves were her emissaries, guiding the human race to prosperity. But another looked on Sayu's world with jealousy. Ulzan Mo arrived overnight, subtly corrupting a number of Sayu's elves, turning them into vampires. Twisted versions of their former selves. Lead by the vampires, his abominations steadily chewed up the empires of man, until, after centuries of war, only a few kingdoms remained.

One of these Kingdoms is Westphalia, home to a dozen or so city states. They squabble like siblings, scheming, plotting, and warring among themselves. The peace of the past three decades has allowed them to work together, building defenses against the abominations that roam the wild. With strong, natural barriers, the city-states can hold off the horrors for a long time, as long as tensions between them remain manageable.

Though the elvish race has declined to the point where many believe they are only myths, and Sayu's presence seems far, sages have discovered a way of creating seeds of power that may change the course of history. When these seeds are sealed inside a human, the human is known as 'awakened'. They gain enhanced physical abilities, healing, and unique powers all their own. But seeds are dangerous. If a human's mind and heart are not healthy, they risk corrupting the power...and themselves.

Okay, so this RP is based on @Salt Lord's request that I run something with elements of magical girl anime. Hence the title. It was a strange starting point for me, but what we've got is essentially Gaia vs Cthulhu and that's pretty awesome. I wouldn't have come up with this if I'd started in a normal place. @Captain Gensokyo and @Taggerung, there are spots reserved for you and Salt Lord if you want them. Otherwise, we need two more players, so let me explain the application process for this interest check. Also invite whomever you like.

Okay, so applications. Fill out this character concept form below. Think of it as a mini character sheet. There will be a full character sheet later. There will be one winning applicant for each of the five roles. (If you apply for more than one role, please make sure your posts do not merge. Also, you will only get one of the roles you apply for)

How to get your application chosen:

  1. Work with other applicants. Characters with preexisting relationships make the party more interesting right away.
  2. Do things that aren't being done. If people are posting for a certain role, certain types of powers, or certain personalities more often than others, avoid those. Do things that make the party diverse, interesting, and balanced.
  3. Get other applicants to like your applications. Likes by the potential players will resolve any ties in my head.
  4. Don't go overboard. The goal is to communicate your concept and how interesting it is briefly. There's still room for interesting details, but only the best of the interesting details, or the ones necessary for your concept to make sense.

Application:

Role: (Choose from: Sword, Shield, Mind, Heart, or Bow)

  • Sword: The sword represents a common soldier, such as a mercenary, a member of the town watch, or a border guard.
  • Shield: The shield represents a knight, an educated warrior of noble birth.
  • Mind: The mind represents a scholar, such as a student, librarian, or scribe.
  • Heart: The heart represents a religious functionary, such as a priest/priestess, acolyte, or monk/nun.
  • Bow: The bow represents a woodsman, possibly a peasant, hunter, or guide.

Personality:

Background:

Power concept: All awakened have enhanced physical abilities. You also have a unique power which takes a form and function based on something important or familiar to you.

Role: Mind

Personality: Neutral, a bit pessimistic

Background: Alchemist

Power concept: Speed, enhanced alchemical and historical knowledge

Like, three or four sentences each, give me enough info to get to know him a little.

Role: Sword

Personality: Renlon is stubborn and quick to show his emotions, though his behavior is generally light hearted and festive. He values honesty whenever possible, and is more than willing to settle matters with his fist or blade rather than his tongue, though this doesn't mean he isn't accepting of other views. As quick to forgive and forget an offense as he is to make one himself, Ren is able to make friends at any bar, whether it be buying a round or throwing a punch.

Background: Renlon was born in the slums of one of the walled cities, his family succumbed to disease, crime and general life in the slums. Ren was taken in by an old sellsword after being found on the sidewalk in the dead arms of the oldest of the three sons. Raising Renlon as his own, the sellsword took him to the middle class district of the city, teaching him swordplay and pyromancy from a young age. Renlon left his adopted father at 17 years old, taking with him a last parting gift, a runed bastard sword, and has since traveled the lands of Westphalia selling his services to whomever needed a sharp blade and skilled hand. He is now 20, bears more than a few scars from his mishaps, and continues to ply his trade, aware of the growing danger from the abominations but still unaware of any real way to stop them.

Power Concept: Pyromancy- is able to control small campfire sized flames with ease, though anything bigger requires much concentration as of now. In moments of need, Ren can project flames from his hands, though this always leaves him drained. His most common use of this power is to set his blade ablaze, the runes set into the blade allowing him to maintain the enchantment with a small amount of concentration.

Role: Heart

Personality:  Colette can be a complex person. Her personality shifts depending on the people around her, always towards what she feels is most suitable. She's excellent at masking her true feelings unless she's extremely stressed or frightened. In truth she lacks empathy for others, has a mean streak, feeds off of attention and praise. She'd never let anyone truly get close to her as she feels relationships are a waste of time as the person will only disappoint her in the end. Deep down she's just a self serving young woman who would stop at nothing to save her own skin. Her will to survive is perhaps the most notable thing about her.

Background: Colette's earliest memory is lying in a street, her gut caved in, curled in the fetal position slowly starving to death. She managed the strength to look up at the sky as birds flew by likely migrating for season. She listened to the sounds of life continuing on around her, totally uncaring towards her situation. Something in her young mind clicked- where most other youth would resign themselves to die, an ugly dark thing unfurled within her heart. It told her she would live but only she could make it so. She listened to that thing and she did live. But she also allowed that dark thing to grow and dictate her every move, her every decision. She stole, she lied, she hurt people - as uncaring towards others as the world had been to her. It was only enough to survive, enough to get by but she wanted so much more.

When she found out the church opened their doors to the homeless and fed them she went there. It didn't take long to figure out she'd be more secure if she actually joined and became a priestess, so she did this.

She did not care for the great goddess that had idly stood by while she suffered as a child but fooling people was an easy feat for her. She enjoyed many liberties within the church and enjoyed the sort of reverent attention she got as a "priestess of the faith".

With the threat of the end of human civilization growing, the church was called upon to aide in the efforts to fight back and somehow she managed to be one of the rumored 'awakened'.

Power concept: Hunger - Perhaps the thing most familiar to her, aside from the darkness in her heart. When she first began showing signs of being awakened she assumed she would get advanced healing powers, or some sort of shield or anything to do with her status as a priestess. Instead her powers manifested in a much more honest way. She has a deep rooted, somewhat insatiable hunger that can only be quenched by draining the life force or essence of living creatures. This is especially horrifying considering it's so strikingly similar to the vampires that plague the world.

Role : The Bow

Personality : Taciturn, stoic, words akin to this spectre feel most adequate to describe the boy that is Avan. The boy feels most in tune with silence, prone replying to questions with nods and gestures, or just long, vacant stares. When prompted to speak, he does so in poor coherency, always speaking in a monotone and displaying a dispassionate expression. Avan may even disturb the likes of others at times, either by way of his ability to stare without blinking or his wooden, awkward demeanour. He also is a rather judgmental, wary individual, easily ticked by things most people would not. While slow and simple-minded on the uptake and devoid of restraint when it comes to his primal instincts, he is not as more of a beast that some may take him for...

Background : Born within a family of seven brothers and sisters, harsh times would linger in the life of Avan, son of Lensteir, a woodsman who had grown far too fond of his reclusive, hermit ways to give it up for Avan's mother. Scrawny as he was as a child, Avan would be nothing more than another mouth to feed among his siblings, one which could not even provide for the family ny helping his father. His awakening would come to further prove his desire for isolation for humans, carving the path for a young Avan to leave the house again and again, to one day never return. Over the years, he has come to know the woods as his own, once in a while guiding travellers and alike through them, as well as to become more and more in tune with those who dwell within and making it an easy task to hunt and trade substance in the nearby towns every once in a while.

Power Concept : Shapeshift
The divergence of Avan's character from others of his kind largely comes from his attunement to his primal senses, as he has come to resemble more and more of the creatures that have surrounded him from the beginning rather than those who brought him to this world. As such, his power essentially links him to that connection who defines his character, as he acquire the characteristics and perhaps even the physical appearance of an animal he has found over the course of his life.

Role: Shield

Personality: The Mad Paladin, Nightender, Shield of the South, all monikers used in naming Ser Godfrey Von Eizen. Those closest to him would describe him as unshakable, courageous and loyal to a fault. Like most career soldiers Godfrey allows little time for frivolity preferring direct action to stratagem and confrontation to passive aggression. This directness describes a personal charisma that has led to many followers on and off the battlefield as well as many enemies. Those who do not know him might think of him as a simple brute who's only happy when swinging a sword, but to his men he is a steadying hand in the face of the strange and terrifying horde that threatens Westphalia. Despite his fearsome reputation Ser Godfrey has a soft spot for those he perceives to be weaker than himself. A manifest characteristic of the code of chivalry that he lives by. Ser Godfrey is no politician and no diplomat, he is a force, a force that one would do well to stay out of the way of...

Background: As the fourth son in the scionic House Von Eizen there was little place left for him in the influential upper rungs of court. Like so many other lordlings born too late he was accorded to the military. His family had given him little choice in the matter, going through the motions of his youthful education with low expectations and seeking to place him in a symbolic generalship somewhere quiet to fulfill House Von Eizen's military obligations. However Ser Godfrey chose to embrace his family's wishes in an unexpected way. His high birth afforded him the opportunity to be a squire to a belted knight on the frontiers south of Westphalia where skirmishes with the vampire enemy were frequent and casualties high. Ser Godfrey's awakening took place on those very battlefields amidst the blood and fire of war with the great enemy. His feats and bravery on the battlefield resulted in him being knighted by the King of Westphalia himself and a meteoric rise to captain of the Fangbreakers, Westphalia's elite vampire hunting battalion.

Power concept: Unravellment.

The reaching, snakelike tendrils of magic seem to have little effect on Ser Godfrey. His fearlessness and refusal to give up no matter the odds has led to a unique awakening: Anti-magic. Although unable to employ the dark arts himself Ser Godfrey can withstand even the most direct magical attack with little consequence. He is an enigma, a void in a world where the touch of magic reigns supreme. There are whispers among the men that he can even unravel the very essence of some spells, although of course such a thing is impossible, is it not?

I like that anti-magic ability.

I'm wondering if we should include weaknesses and drawbacks?

Definitely. I was thinking his weakness would be a complete inability to have magic used on him, such as buffs or healing of any kind. Not being able to get any sort of benefit from magic as well as generally not being able to be damaged by it unless it was a physical use such as using telekinesis to throw something at him etc.

I like that anti-magic ability.

If it fits, sure, but don't push the length too far. There will be plenty of room to develop the specifics of your powers on the CS if you get the role

Role: sword

Personality: Aran Kopaka has a kind heart, which he buries beneath a cold and logical front. Perhaps it serves to distance him emotionally, allowing the watchman to perform his duties without regret or hesitation, or maybe it’s a scar left by war. Those that know him well, particularly the other men of the watch, understand that this seasoned soldier suffers from mild PTSD, and feelings of abandonment. Even so, he cares greatly about each and every one of his charge, and would fight to his last breath to protect them, although he would never admit it.

Backstory: Corporel Aran Kopaka is a veteran of the Matanuva war, fought in the the northern regions of Wesphalia over the course of the one of the coldest winters in recorded history. Aran served in a unit of pikemen that protected the outermost flank of his army, and when the center was overrun and routed, he and his men were stranded in the mountain wilderness, the unit slowly succumbing to the elements. A number of months later, the war was won, and rescue came, but Aran was the only survivor; every one of his companions had starved or frozen. He now serves as the dutiful captain of the city watch, quietly meditating on whether to be proud of his country for winning the war, or resent it for leaving him and his men to die.

Power Concept: Cryomancy. The bitter cold of that fateful winter never really went away. (Awakened) Aran’s touch can freeze liquids and he possesses the ability to emit an aura of frost that chills enemies and slows their reactions. To a very limited degree, he can influence the weather, turning any precipitation to snow that responds to his direction as he whirls his massive halberd.

Role: Mind

Personality: Perun Karjalainen, on a good day, is seriously pissed off. He's quite intelligent, confident (probably to a fault), and often capable, but also young, short-tempered, and uninterested in social niceties. His goal in life is to bring an end to the endless, futile war he sees all around him.

Backstory: Perun was once a fairly normal kid; he went to school, got decent grades, got a corresponding amount of bullying, and was raised entirely by his rather inattentive mother. However, he grew up admiring his father and three older brothers, who were on the frontier fighting evil. The occasions when they were able to come home briefly were some of the happiest Perun could remember. He wanted to be like them, but consistently poor health kept him out of the military, so he did the next best thing and went to college to learn about military engineering, where he learned his hero relatives had all died in action. Perun learned as much as he could about the incident, and about other engagements, and came to the conclusion that the war was only a constant drain on human life. He was filled with anger and hatred for the whole thing, and vowed to end the suffering in his lifetime. Those not actively helping him are annoyances at best and enemies at worst.

Power: Rage. Perun is always angry, but in battle he can become terrifyingly furious. This aids him and his allies in physical combat, but makes him more likely to lose focus on what's actually important.

@Taggerung @Rum Ham @Blue Jay @yoora @caYabo, congratulations, you're in. I promised Salt Lord a spot as well, so there will be a duplicate role. That'll be fine. I will invite you all to a hosted project shortly and begin writing up more detailed lore.
