If I remember correctly it was either because he gave them info or poison that they used against him or something like that.

The former seems about right. Poison seems way too simple for Orochimaru

The reason I say so because I could have sworn they showed him with purple spots on his skin for some reason and I feel like it was poison but I could be remembering wrong.

All ik is the fight was never shown in the manga and Pierriot kinda have equal rights to the creative liscenses of Naruto as Kishimoto does (like Toei with DB). So ofcourse, they can fill in the gaps where they want. Unless Kishi says otherwise
