go to the "User Control Panel" at the top right. Then to "Usergroups" on the left. Once you've clicked on that you should be in groups/manage groups menu. Scroll to the group/forum you want to join (they're listed alphabetically), click the little circle next to it, then go to the bottom of the page. make sure "Join Selected" is the option showing, and then hit "Submit".
