Lou didn’t respond right away. The sound of the water gently lapping against the edges of the bath filled the silence as Lucina’s fingers moved through her hair. It was oddly soothing—comforting, even—but the question left her feeling exposed in a way she hadn’t expected.
Her eyes stayed fixed on the water’s surface, watching the ripples shift and settle.
“…Something like that,” she said quietly, voice barely above a whisper.
She didn’t flinch, didn’t tense—but there was a stillness to her, like a held breath. “It’s… complicated,” she added after a moment, her tone soft. Not defensive. Not ashamed. Just… distant. Careful.
“I was never supposed to inherit. That wasn’t the plan. But plans changed.”
Her fingers slid under the water, brushing against the hilt of the rapier even though it wasn’t there, out of habit. Her next words came slower, like she had to feel her way through them.
“Someone… made sure things went their way. Someone who wanted power more than anything else.”
Lou’s mouth twisted faintly—bitterness, or maybe regret. She leaned back slightly into the water, letting her hair float as Lucina rinsed a bit of the soap away.
“I didn’t want it. Any of it. So I left.”
She paused there, as if she could’ve said more—but chose not to. Not yet.
Then, glancing over her shoulder, she met Lucina’s eyes. There was no fear in her gaze. Just quiet resolve.
“I’m not hiding. I just… don’t know who I am without all that. Not yet.”
And for the first time, the title she was running from didn’t seem quite as heavy when she said, “Lou’s enough for now. Don’t you think?”
