Fantasy Koulwarth: The Initiation

The first choice reminds me of those movie scenes where someone pushes the people in danger out of the way and then takes their place instead. I think a better tactic would be to distract the creature while everyone gets armed, I'm sure our agility rolls will only get better, although a shield would help. So let's grab that when we have the chance.

"Hey! Over here!" you yell, and the monster is startled enough that its aim twitches, barely missing Roran and Laeroth, who dive sideways to the floor.

With the creature's interest redirected, it hurriedly focuses back on you. However, it doesn't attack, instead staring at you, as though trying to anticipate your next move.

You:

Grab a weapon.
Mirror the creature by staring at it, unmoving.
Try to talk to it.
Signal to the others to attack it while its distracted.

I'm pretty sure fighting this thing is our whole purpose of being here, hence the weapons and basically everything the creature's been doing so far. I'm waiting for the well-dressed man who's going to step inside and congratulate us on figuring out what we were supposed to do after we take this thing out.

At any rate, I don't want to risk seeing how hard this guy can slug us by using chess or diplomacy, so it's time to signal the attack. Take him out, boys!

You lock eye contact with the first person you see, who happens to be Roran. With a slight tilt of your head, you signal to him to attack the creature while it's preoccupied with you.

He catches on quickly, and with a second glance between the creature and you, nods to confirm his understanding. He, in turn, signals to Viessa, Elmyra, and Aymer. Meriel seems too frightened to make a move, so Laeroth sneaks her into the corner and stands in front of her protectively. Viessa snatches a spear from the rack, Elmyra grabs what looks like a crossbow, Aymer takes a sword, and Roran readies a shield along with his axe.

With a nod to each other, all four of them charge at the creature, swinging (or shooting) their weapons as violently as they can. The creature is surprised, but not entirely unsuspecting. It whirls, screeching, and shadowy smoke begins to emanate from its apparent wounds as one clawed hand flails and swipes into Elmyra.

The girl goes tumbling across the room, a dark line across her torso, and she lays there for a momet before weakly trying to prop herself up.

You hear a high-pitched sob, and you see Meriel burst into tears. The creature, though injured, is still kicking, and turns to the two unarmed and apparently defenseless kids.

You decide to:

Grab a weapon and help Meriel & Laeroth.
Try to heal Elmyra.
Quickly come up with a plan in the group.

I was thinking about the plan, but not sure how well that's going to pan out while the creature's got his eyes on those kids.
Whether or not the others follow our lead, I believe we're going to need to take matters into our own hands, grab a weapon, and stop that creature from doing anything to Meriel & Laeroth.

I agree, we don't have time to formulate a plan or preoccupy ourselves with one member of our team who is (for now) "safely" out of the way when we have two people in immediate danger. Let's grab a spear and charge the monster, hopefully we can use it to fend it off while inflicting some damage. The length should definitely help us stay out of harm's way.

You dart over to the weapons rack as the creature advances on Meriel, who is sobbing and cowering, and Laeroth, who is staring at it with a rather relaxed demeanor.

"Move, you idiots!" Aymer yells, but you aren't sure if it is directed at Meriel and Laeroth, or the others, who stand between him and the creature.

With a quick glance over your options, you immediately choose:

A shortsword.
A bow.
A crossbow.
A greatsword.
A spear.
Throwing knives.
A dagger.
An axe.
Brass knuckles.
A hammer.
A staff.

You grab a spear and heft it over towards the creature. It is a lot heavier than you anticipated, so it swings in a wide circle. However, it does successfully leave a large arching scar across the creature's back.

Instinctually, the creature leaps forward towards Meriel and Laeroth, screeching all the while. You hear someone's voice cry out, and then there is a loud sound like an explosion, and the room fills with light.

When you open your eyes, the shadowy creature is gone, and everyone, including yourself, is on the ground, save for Laeroth, who is still standing and staring at where the creature had been.

Everyone is silent for a few moments.

"What. Was. That?!" Viessa gasps, struggling to get to her feet but finding herself weak in the knees.

"Which part?" Aymer adds in sarcastically, using a weapons rack as support.

"Everything! I mean, what's the deal with that monster thing, and that light stuff! And what's the big idea about that kid bringing us in here? I mean, where is he anyway? Did he set this up?"

"I'm gonna kill him," Aymer growls, then groans at Viessa. "Please stop talking. You're as bad as--"

"Elmyra!" Roran interrupts, rushing over to the girl still on the floor, motionless.

Everyone seems more than a bit shaken up. You decide to check in on:

Meriel. She was pretty scared.
Laeroth. He doesn't seem deterred at all, which is strange.
Elmyra. She got hit pretty hard.
Roran. He was a big help rounding up the others.
Viessa. She looks like her head's going to explode.
Aymer. Someone needs to calm him down.

I see no reason not to give in to the impulse of running straight to Elmyra, who seems to be in totally bad shape right now.
Seems she's unable to get up after being the only one to take a hit from that creature. We'd better see what's up.

I didn't see the relationship meters, I saw the injured girl on the ground. Though Roran is also rushing over to help Elmyra, so either way we've got her covered.

(Ah, I had a feeling Laeroth had something up his sleeve. Good thing we worked on our relationship with him earlier, he could prove to be a valuable ally or dangerous foe)

At first I was leaning towards checking on Meriel or Elmyra, since they are the most shaken up, then I reasoned that maybe if we check on Roran, he could help us gather everyone up. However, I realize this is likely a relationship boost choice, so I think it would make the most sense to have a better relationship with Laeroth, considering how strong he is.

You head over to Elmyra and Roran at a moderately quick pace. Elmyra is sitting up now, rubbing her head and eyes sluggishly, while Roran is on his knees, trying to help her stay upright.

"Are you okay?" you ask without thinking, and Elmyra blinks up at you.

"I've been better," she laughs humorlessly, and touches her torso where the creature hit her absentmindedly. "It doesn't really hurt where it hit me. It's mostly my head when I fell. And I got the wind knocked out of me." She laughs, and Roran touches a hand to her shoulder.

"Careful, don't move too much. We don't know what damage that thing did to you. You could end up worsening it." He speaks like he knows medical practice, yet it is evident by his hands hovering around her that he doesn't know what action to take.

"Thanks for asking," Elmyra smiles, looking at the two of you. +5 Relationship!

You smile and nod, unsure of what exactly to say. Roran smiles at you too, and you decide to say something to him, too, while you're there.

"Thanks for the backup," you tell him. "We couldn't have taken that thing out without you."

Roran's face reddens slightly, and he looks away sheepishly. "Thanks," he says softly. "But I didn't really do anything. You were the leader." He gives you a grateful look, likely for the battle, but it seems like a bit also comes from your checking in. +5 Relationship!

Roran turns away from you and looks back to Elmyra to continue 'treating' her, so you think about checking in with someone else, since you seem to have all the time in the world.

You decide to talk to:

Meriel. She was pretty scared.
Laeroth. He doesn't seem deterred at all, which is strange.
Viessa. She looks like her head's going to explode.
Aymer. Someone needs to calm him down.

(Ooh, is this a hint that talking to Laeroth is a bad idea? So many hard decisions here, haha)

So many tired adages I could bring up here, but I think the reward of talking to Laeroth is worth the risk, so let's go talk to him.

You decide to talk to Laeroth, as he seems to be acting suspiciously. (Though, when is he not?) He is still standing in front of Meriel, who has moved back against the wall, still crying, but a bit more composed.

Laeroth doesn't look at you as you approach, his eyes still fixed on where the creature was.

"Hey, Laeroth," you say softly. He doesn't respond, but you don't think he's ignoring you, rather lost in thought.

To get his attention, you:

Touch his shoulder and shake him a bit.
Call his name a bit louder.
Wave a hand in front of his face.
Do nothing. This isn't worth your time.

Laeroth's probably zoned out and that's fine. I think any of the three options will grab his attention, with a descending order of subtlety.

I was originally going to give him the shoulder shake, but saying his name louder is a tried and true action. Everyone's seen it done before.

Hmm, I was thinking that maybe shaking him might startle him and cause him to overreact, and waving a hand in front of him seems a bit rude. Let's just subtly say his name louder.

"Laeroth," you say again, but he doesn't respond. "Laeroth. Hello? Are you okay...?"

On 'okay', the boy's head jerks up and he locks eyes with you. He stares at you for a few seconds, then blinks.

"Thank you," he says quietly, almost a whisper. +3 Relationship!

"What?"

"I'm not injured. But my head hurts." He lifts a hand to his forehead and gingerly massages his temple. "It was very bright."

"Oh. Yeah, it was."

He looks at you, the faintest trace of a smile on his lips, but he doesn't seem like he plans on saying anything more (unless you initiate, that is).

Noticing this, you think it best to:

Ask what he thinks that light was.
Ask what he thinks that creature was.
Accuse him of almost killing you all with a magic light blast.
Say nothing and leave the conversation.

(All good, I'll be busy Monday and Tuesday, so I might not get the chance to respond.)

The last two choices seem downright rude and completely counterproductive to what we have been trying to accomplish so far. Of the two remaining options, I would prefer to find out what that light was.

1.

Ooh, I better not forget about this one.

I would like to ask about the light as well. That creature has been dealt with and we shouldn't be too concerned about that right now, but that light was quite interesting. Perhaps Laeroth knows about it.

"So..." you begin awkwardly. "What do you think that was? The bright light? Whatever it was, it totally incinerated that monster thing."

"No," he says quickly.

"Hm?"

"It didn't incinerate it. It didn't kill it."

"Wait, what? So what did it do? Is it still alive?!"

"Yes."

"Wha-- well, where is it?"

"I don't know. Somewhere else."

"Won't it come back?"

"Yes, probably."

"That's comforting," you mumble sarcastically.

"No, not really." Laeroth raises an eyebrow at you in confusion, apparently not understanding your sarcasm.

"So how do you know so much about it? The light, i mean?" You have a gut feeling that he had something to do with it, but you dont want to jump to conclusions.

Laeroth says nothing for a few moments, then shrugs, wincing slightly. "I just do," he says finally.

You aren't entirely satisfied with that answer, but it doesn't look like you'll be getting a better one any time soon by going with this tactic.

He blinks at you, and you decide to:

Ask what he thinks that creature was.
Accuse him of almost killing you all with a magic light blast.

Well, he definitely couldn't have killed us with a magic light blast, so we don't need to worry about that one anymore.

Seems like Laeroth is a guy who knows things, though. How about we ask for his thoughts on that creature?

Yeah, I think it was a sort of cleansing spell or maybe it imprisons all malevolent spirits in the area. Regardless, I think we should question Laeroth about the creature.
