Fantasy Koulwarth: The Initiation

Magic confounds logic! Also that pulley could be rearranging the rooms, but even if we leave through phasing, we can always come back. I just want to learn as many spells as possible!

I don't really want to phase through the door, and don't expect it to go amazingly, but at the same time I just gotta know what happens if we phase through the door, so let's do it. If anything goes wrong, we can spend some time thinking on our mistakes by the fireside. That's what it's there for, after all.
Aymer will be perfectly okay with this.

"I think I have an idea that can avoid us breaking through a wall," you say, and Aymer looks at you with a raised eyebrow. "We could try using another spell to--"

"No way," Aymer says, shaking his head for emphasis. "No magic."

"What? Why not?"

"It's... not a good idea," he decides. "It's too risky, and I just don't wanna do it. End of discussion."

You frown, and decide to:

Call him a chicken.
Plead with him.
Do the spell against his will.
Drop the whole thing.

(Shh, you never noticed that xD)

Sounds pretty dumb since we are the ones doing the spell, but he must have some reason. Let's just drop it for now.

Aymer probably wouldn't want to see us blow ourselves up, so we'll drop it and perhaps check out something else before we have a relax. Middle bookshelves, anyone?

You sigh. "Okay, fine. No magic." 'For now,' you add internally.

Aymer says nothing, but he looks a little more pleased than before. +2 Relationship!

He still seems intent on finding a way to smash through the wall. You wonder if he thinks about the consequences of that, considering his desire for secrecy.

You figure it's best to consider the other options, but then... you could always try to attempt to phase through the wall without Aymer (or his knowledge).

In the end, you decide to:

Find something to help break through the wall.
Phase through the wall on your own.
Gather the group and tell them about the mechanism.
Keep it hush-hush and only recruit one person from the group to help you (phasing or otherwise).
Drop the entire pulley situation and look somewhere else.

It's time to gather the group. Doesn't make sense to have everyone else continue searching when we already found something.

Hey, there's no winning solution here. Either we go look at something else or we focus on this door, and someone's not gonna be too happy with whatever we pick. At least, that's what I'm thinking right now.

I would've rather had just one other person (most likely secret boy Laeroth) in the know, and figured this out. We could certainly make much faster process with everyone knowing, even though Aymer wouldn't like that. May as well go with the Vip3R's choice, since I'm sure if we either break or phase through the wall they're bound to find out anyways.

"Hey! Everyone, come here! We found something!" you call, hands cupped around your mouth. You feel Aymer's eyes burning into the back of your head, but before either of you can say anything, the other kids head over, leaving your actions undiscussed at present. It does obviously bother him, though, as he glares at you for the entirety of the following conversation. -5 Relationship!

Meriel is the first to reach you, with Roran and Elmyra following close behind (the latter much too excited for her ward's liking). Viessa walks up beside Aymer, still looking a bit grumpy but not particularly angry anymore. Laeroth is nowhere to be found.

"What is it? What'd you find?" Elmyra asks excitedly. "Does it lead out of here?"

Aymer sighs loudly.

"Well, I used a spell and was able to detect a mechanism behind this wall. It looks like a pulley of some sort," you explain.

At the mention of the spell, Meriel perks up. It does still seem to be a sore subject (if her once-red eyes are anything to go by), but doesn't look offended or hurt that you managed to do it; rather, she looks proud of you, and almost idolizing. +1 Relationship!

"So how do we get to this pulley thing?" Viessa asks, running her hand over the wall. She doesn't seem to be asking anyone in particular.

"There's no switch to open the wall?" Roran asks, and you shake your head.

"Not that I saw."

Roran nods, thinking. "There must be some way to get in there, though..."

"Can't we just smash through the wall?!" Elmyra suggests, and Aymer sighs loudly again.

"I was thinking of a spell to phase through it, myself," you offer.

"Ooh! That's even cooler!"

You glance around again, still noting the slight decline in your number. "Has anyone seen Laeroth?" you ask, and some look around as well, shaking their heads. "Should we look for him?"

"It's a small room; he's fine," Aymer rolls his eyes. "He can catch up later. Let's focus on what's actually important right now."

The others (save Viessa) seem unsure, and they glance between you and Aymer, as if waiting to see what you will say in response.

You decide to:

Go look for Laeroth on your own.
Have the whole group look for Laeroth.
Try breaking through the wall.
Try phasing through the wall.

Well, we should go look for Laeroth. Remember, he knows more than we do about this place. I don't think that he will talk if the whole groupe finds him, though. Better try to find him on our own and let the others discuss about the mecanism that we found. Who knows? They could even succeed to activate it.

"Finding Laeroth is important," you say firmly. "You all stay here and brainstorm; I'll go look for him."

"Will do," Roran affirms, nodding, and the others watch you as you head off.

Without question, you first head up to the balcony where you last saw the boy. There are more bookshelves along the wall, and a chair in front of a desk about a yard away from you. You note that the desk is covered messily with books and scattered papers. The balcony creaks beneath your every footfall, making you a little wary where you step.

However, Laeroth is nowhere to be seen.

You figure your next choice of action should be to:

Call his name.
Examine the desk.
Examine the bookshelves.
Try using your mechanism-detection spell in case there is something else small nearby.
Peer out over the balcony and get a bird's-eye-view of the rest of the room.

I have a feeling that whatever is on the desk has a lot to do with Laeroth's disappearance, let's check the desk first.

You move forward to the desk and examine what's on it. There are about five books -- St. Eldas' Magic Theory is among them, you notice -- stacked in the corner. The others read Lost Souls, The Spiritual Plane, Forgotten Magic vol 3, and The Boy Who Came Back to Life.

The papers, on the other hand, are covered in various scribblings that don't appear to be in any language you know, but one word you do make out: 'ELSEWHERE', written in all capital letters.

You decide to:

Call Laeroth's name.
Examine the books.
Examine the papers.
Examine the bookshelves behind you.
Try using your mechanism-detection spell in case there is something else small nearby.
Peer out over the balcony and get a bird's-eye-view of the rest of the room.
Call someone from the group to help you. (write in)
Forget Laeroth and rejoin the group.

It would be wise to create a bound with Viessa before we find ourselves in a situation where she refuses to rescue us, or worse, that she doesn't trust us enough to rescue her. I'm gonna jump on the opportunity and call Viessa. One of us could look at the books (Forgotten Magic and The Spiritual Plane are calling me) while the other examines the paper.

I agree, two people are better than one, and both the papers and books hold the key to unlocking where Laeroth went.

"Hey, Viessa!" you call down to the group, leaning over the railing so as to make eye contact with the girl in question. "Can you come and help me?" You smile at her, trying to soothe the animosity between you, but even from a distance, you can see her roll her eyes.

"I can. Doesn't mean I will," she huffs, not bothering to even look at you.

"Please?" you offer. "I would really appreciate it."

A moment passes, wherein you notice Roran's internal debate over whether or not he should step in and volunteer to go in Viessa's stead. Eventually, though, she sighs and crosses her arms.

"Fine," she mutters through gritted teeth, beginning to move towards the balcony. "But I still don't like you, got it?" she adds as she reaches the top.

You nod understandingly. You accept that she still dislikes you for now, but that doesn't mean that you will give up trying to befriend her.

"So, what do you want?" Viessa asks. "I'm guessing whatever-his-name-was isn't around here, right?"

"Yeah. This was where I last saw him, so I came here first." You point at the desk. "I found some books and a paper over there; I think it has something to do with wherever he went."

Viessa doesn't look impressed, but she complies. "Okay," she mumbles, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "What about them?"

"This paper, for one," you say, holding it up for her to see.

"...'Elsewhere'...?" she reads, taking it from your hands. "That's a bit cryptic. But he did kinda seem that type."

"The books have interesting titles too."

These she reads silently. "What do you think it means?"

"I dunno. I was wondering if maybe you could help me figure it out."

She eyes you suspiciously, but then nods, examining the paper closer. "...Okay. I'll see what I can do." She seems a little appreciative that she was your first choice. +3 Relationship!

"Thanks so much!" you reply genuinely, and she waves her hand dismissively.

As you have already decided to examine the books, you decide your first read shall be:

St. Eldas' Magic Theory. It may include new spells to help you locate Laeroth!
Lost Souls. Laeroth is lost, right?
The Spiritual Plane. Perhaps that's where Laeroth disappeared to... another dimension?
Forgotten Magic, vol 3. Laeroth might have used something written in it to disappear!
The Boy Who Came Back to Life. It doesn't look too related to the current situation (it's a children's storybook at best), but it still looks like a fun read!

By the looks of it, The Spiritual Plane probably has the most to do with finding Laeroth, but I can't pass up the opportunity to learn some new spells.

Let's read Forgotten Magic, vol 3.

Did you know there's a special achievement for reading all volumes of Forgotten Magic?
Let's go ahead and take a look at that book, then. At this rate, our talents of wizardry will beat Laeroth's in no time. Then, we'll be able to find him for sure.

You flip open the third volume of Forgotten Magic. Inside, you skim through pages upon pages of spells that have apparently been lost to time. Most are either practically useless (detangling a knot, for example) or quite dark (such as brainwashing). Either way, you do learn a lot abpit the nature and different uses of magic. +1 Intelligence!

You find one spell of possible interest, which entails making the user incorporeal. So, basically, the phasing spell you were thinking of learning. This may have been what Laeroth did, but it may not. You could try it, but you don't know if randomly making yourself intangible is the best idea without supervised practice.

You decide to:

Try the spell.
Read another book and leave the spell alone for now; you may come back to it, but you want to keep your options open.
Forget the spell and read another book.
Forget the spell and the books; look somewhere else.

Wait, before I vote: do we know how to make ourselves going back to our tangible state? If yes, go for the spell. If not, let's read another book and leave the spell alone for now. Maybe The Spiritual Plane?

I see no harm in delaying the use of the spell, let's continue to learn as many spells as possible. Hit me up with some more books!
