Fantasy Monster Cafe

cheshirekitt

I'd take a monster to prom
It is quiet in the cafe, it's just beginning to open and the sky is only beginning to darken, not many customers will be arriving soon as most of them are nocturnal and the suns rays are still able to hurt them in some way. Though it isn't busy right now in terms of customers the staff are busy all the same, a large werewolf man is seen dragging a lamia out of a room, the snake already dressed but still half asleep, the sun making him lazy with it's heat.

Wolfgang, the owner of the cafe huffs as he heaves Jeremy into the cafe area "Jeremy customers will be here any second pull yourself together boy!" He says gruffly to the weary eyed lamia who just simply yawns, showing off his sharp tongue and teeth.

"But boss, there's no one here yet...." Jeremy complains as Wolfgang pushes him into a 'standing' position near the door so he can greet people and seat them however he simply coils up on the floor instead, clearly not moving unless something makes it worth his while.

Xeren silently came out of the oven, coughing dust. "Ahem spit...doo da free lala de ya deeee" he sung a little tune putting on apron. "Now to...start, we will start, with my culinary art and then cut through veggies and fruuuit~"

Pulling out a knife, he hacked a whole range of fruits and veg.

A light stream of water washed over the mint leaves behind the cafe counter. Aspen hummed quietly as she watered, pleased that one of her favorite plants was thriving. It was the last of the clay pots that needed tending to that evening, now she could finally begin to work. Right before she was about to call out to Jeremy to help her find one of tea strainers; (I swear, they turn up in the oddest of places!) the door swung open with such force it startled the poor nymph. As she flinched, her mask slid into her face, promptly hitting her on the nose.

"Ow...." She mumbled, pushing it back into her red hair. Why was Levi always so rambunctious and loud? Still, Aspen couldn't stay mad at her for long. She was simply too cute for her to be cross with! Maybe one day the nymph would get up and scold to the little one, but today was not that day.

"Good evening you two!" The young lady called out to the newcomers. "And good evening to you as well Jeremy! Do you or Wolfgang need me to help with anything at all? By the way, one of my tea strainers disappeared again, do you have any idea to where it might be?"

Aspen smiled at the young hybrid child, head spinning with all of her questions. It took a moment for the nymph to decipher the speech that rolled off the girl's tongue at five miles per hour. "Why thank you Livi! And of course I'll help get you some food, but you've got to promise to help me find something as soon as we're done! Would you like any hot chocolate before we go off to the kitchen?" Aspen figured it was a terrible idea to offer coffee, Naisha had enough on his hands already without a caffeine crazy wolf girl running around. And Wolfgang certainly wouldn't be happy about it. The least she could offer was a sugar high though. Everyone needed a little sweetness in their life!

"How have you and Naisha been, by the way?" Aspen inquired as she fastened her apron on. It was one of her favorite things about her job. It was light brown with two patchwork pockets sewn into the front. One held her pan flute (What kind of nymph went anywhere with out their pan flute!?) and the other held a small paperback copy of her favorite Grimm story, The Cat And The Mouse In Partnership. (A little dark, but a good read) "Doing well?"

Sarya had been sleeping in the rafters, perfectly content to remain up there until she was needed for business. The door slamming open sent enough vibrations through the building and her web to wake her, however, and she peered blearily down at the two people who had come into the cafe. Naisha and Livi... Livi sure was a lively one, but she truly amused Sarya. She wondered what it would be like to have that kind of energy. She was grateful for Naisha, at any rate, who seemed to keep the wolf girl in line in a way. Her focus moved around the cafe to the different beings in it, to Jeremy who was curled on the floor, Aspen who seemed to be getting something for Livi, and Xeren who was cooking away in the kitchen. Some of the aromas had risen far enough to reach Sarya and she smiled, preferring Xeren's cooking to anything she had ever caught in her web.

Using her web she carefully lowered herself to the ground in the back, stretching a moment before looking around to see if anyone needed assistance with anything... but everything seemed covered for the moment so she hovered in the background, moving over to the bar where she could watch Livi and Aspen closer, but attempting to stay far enough away as not to intrude.

Nicholas kept a close eye on the clock as the minutes ticked away towards evening. He had gone into the cafe earlier in the day once... and it had been a rather awkward occurrence. If he felt like he didn't belong on a regular evening, the obviousness of him sticking out like a sore thumb when no one else around was unavoidable even for him. Placing a finger into the pages of his book to hold his spot, he finally decided it would be a decent time to head down- early enough that he could get his corner table but late enough that other patrons would he coming in soon. He slipped quietly out of his apartment- not wanting to deal with the questions of where he keeps disappearing to late at night, only to return at dawn, - and made his way over to the cafe.

"Jeremy," He said, noticing the snake man- in face he almost tripped over him- "You may want to sleep elsewhere- lest your tail get trodden on." He warned, kneeling to nudge the naga's shoulder in case that was needed. He usually didn't bother the people in the cafe too much, unless he had questions that he felt weren't too prying to ask, but he was concerned about someone stepping on the man and that truly wouldn't do. He'd never seen a grumpy Jeremy... and he'd rather like to keep it that way.

Jeremy mumbled something, slowly rising to Nicholas' height and slumping on his shoulder, his tail beginning to wrap around the other "Good...uhhhh...Good morning sir how may I help you today?" The young Lamia yawned mid sentence "Are you alone today and where will sir be sitting?"

Wolfgang emerged from one of the back rooms, his office to look out into the main floor of the cafe and shook his head "Look alive people we've got customers already for the love of god get your act together! Aspen! Get me a coffee and I'll give you some work to do!" he bellowed.

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/66ff528a0703b566af1a0a0dc3c1cd0c.jpg.0603bfed035c52dfe1e7f94ff9421f71.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="73230" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/66ff528a0703b566af1a0a0dc3c1cd0c.jpg.0603bfed035c52dfe1e7f94ff9421f71.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

Feeling he had accomplished what needed to be done, Nicholas was ready to turn and leave the lamia... until he felt a weight slump into his shoulder and something vaguely creepy coiling around him. He really hadn't had too much contact with Jeremy to have dealt with this before, but instead of panicking he focused on what the half asleep snake man asked him.

"I uh... just wanted to get a table here. It's just me." He said, trying to keep his voice even. He glanced down at his legs and then back at Jeremy, wondering if the Lamia was consciously aware of what he was doing or if it was just reflex. "If you coil around me anymore, I'm not going to be able to move." He observed quietly, trying so very hard not to squirm yet failing miserably. His book was tightly gripped in his left hand, place still held by a finger, while the other arm flailed about- trying to figure out if he should help hold Jeremy up or if he should be pushing the snake man away or what.

Just before evening, Sarya was finding, was a favorite part of the day for her. Especially when Jeremy was still asleep. She flinched as the boss yelled for them to get their acts together and quickly went about setting a table for one for Nicholas, over in the corner where he usually sat. Once she had finished setting that up, she made her way over to the table, spindly legs carrying her gracefully.

"Aspen, while you're working on an order for Mr. Wolfgang, could you also start working on the black coffee order for Nicholas? He's a bit tied up at the moment..." She said, a smile curling her lips as she looked over at the trapped man. It was about time he started actually talking to the workers here instead of sulking in the corner like he usually did. It gave Sarya pause...perhaps it would be best if she moved his table closer to the center where he'd have no choice but to interact. Grinning, she picked up and reset the table that was closer to the bar and halfway between the entrance and the back wall.

"Maybe I don't want you to move." The larger man hissed playfully in the others ear, giving one last tight squeeze to Nicholas before relaxing completely and letting him go, slithering towards the table Sarya had set for him "Right this way sir."

"W-Well." Nicholas stammered, trying to figure out the best way to respond to that. He couldn't think of anything besides how red his face must be turning at the moment, and ducked his head so that his long curtain of silvery hair fell across the side of his face. His breath released in a gush when he was released and then it came to mind what he could of said. So he said it, even though his response was late: "If you're busy keeping me tied up all night, who'll tend to the other guests? You know no one does it quite as well as you do." Nicholas pointed out before following Jeremy to the table, His eyes widened slightly at where he was being seated, but he didn't argue it. His gaze sought out Sarya a moment, and have her a deadly glare before he took his seat at the table. "Thanks." He said to Jeremy before picking up the menu that had been left for him and hiding his face in it.

Jeremy stilled at his comment, a sly grin appearing over his face. "That makes it sound like you'd be willing to let me tie you up sir. There are other waitors and waitresses here who can handle my adoring fans but only one person could tie you up as good as I here little mouse." He chuckled lightly "Speaking of, Sarya! High five me girl, the table placement couldn't have been better had I done it myself!" Jeremy held his hand in the air towards the woman.

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/66ff528a0703b566af1a0a0dc3c1cd0c.jpg.1d2dc8eeb66e7a37afed0a57f67a16f7.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="73238" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/66ff528a0703b566af1a0a0dc3c1cd0c.jpg.1d2dc8eeb66e7a37afed0a57f67a16f7.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

Taking a deep breath and releasing it slowly, Nicholas glanced over the top of his menu at Jeremy. "There isn't much I wouldn't be willing to allow if it meant I could keep coming here." He said, making sure his voice wouldn't carry far beyond Jeremy. "And I don't doubt you would be the best at it." He admitted. His face darkened further at being called 'mouse'... it reminded him just where he was on the food chain at this place. Being a human when everything else was some kind of mythical legend made it a bit daunting, and extremely humbling... which is why he preferred the table at the back. He had never been told he couldn't come here, but then he had never been told his kind were allowed here, either. So he always felt like he was walking a tight rope- which both exhilarated him yet kept him on his toes.

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/monster_6___spider_girl___arachne_by_myrmirada-d5l3smk.png.fb2833a38b4c077ee994a37402bca701.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="73239" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/monster_6___spider_girl___arachne_by_myrmirada-d5l3smk.png.fb2833a38b4c077ee994a37402bca701.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

Sarya blinked in confusion at Jeremy's request, before coming over to the table and tapping her hand lightly against his. She quickly withdrew her hand back to herself, crossing her arms in an unsure gesture. She met Jeremy's next glare with a calm, neutral look of her own, before turning her attention back to Jeremy.

"He's always so.... unnoticed." She stated softly, hoping that would explain her reasoning entirely. She kept an eye on Aspen, hoping the coffee would be completed soon. "I'd also like to point out... I might have the upper hand when tying people up." She said with a coy grin, gesturing to the lovely scattering of spider silk across the ceiling. "I was built for it." The only problem was if she was tying people up she knew they wouldn't enjoy it, and judging by the flush in Nicholas' cheeks he had been enjoying what Jeremy was doing.

Sarya always felt envy towards the lumia. Despite being similar to her, half of him a creature that most people despised, he was able to make people adore him anyway... where as the best thing she could usually accomplish was get people to scream. She understood their fear, of course, but she wished she knew how to twist that fear the way Jeremy did. Make the people desire it, instead of continue to fear it. It was a crazy wish, but yet she still longed for people not to hate her for what she was. Spiders could be beautiful.

"I know your reasoning behind it and you did splendidly!" He cheered "And I think madame you're wrong there, you produce your rope whereas I am the rope." Jeremy winked in the direction of Nicholas "Though I don't doubt there would be a lot of ladies and men eagre to have you tie them up my dear madame, if only you had the confidence to do so." He sighed and shook his head sadly before turning toward Nicholas "You might not want to look so appetising little mouse or I might just eat you on the spot." The Lamia licked his lips, sharp tongue darting out.

Wilhelm walked through the darkened city till he found the Cafe. As he opened the door, he saw Jeremy and Sarya chatting to each other. He'd never admit it, but the spider woman frightened him a bit. It wasn't personal, he just had a bad experience with one when he was a child. "Ah, good day everyone," he said in a loud and clear voice, "how have you all been? Have you missed your old story teller?"

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/66ff528a0703b566af1a0a0dc3c1cd0c.jpg.a8b48f084e8938355bd2a9c2e89489c3.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="73241" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/66ff528a0703b566af1a0a0dc3c1cd0c.jpg.a8b48f084e8938355bd2a9c2e89489c3.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

Having been watching the conversation between Sarya and Jeremy, Nicholas caught the wink. It was definitely more appealing to be tied up by something that was alive and nonthreatening. Actual rope, like what Sarya had, seemed less appealing. Perhaps that was just because he would feel like a fly in a spider's web. Which... he had never thought of it that way before but he wondered if human really was on Jeremy and Sarya's menu. His face paled a little at the thought, and he swallowed audibly- especially when the Lamia showed off his lethal teeth and tongue. He was definitely the prey in this scenario, and he was just lucky the predators hadn't decided they were hungry.

"I suppose I wouldn't want that." Nicholas replied to Jeremy's suggestion of being careful, or the Lamia would have to eat him. He didn't know where some of the things he said came from... it just felt like the right thing to say.

When the door opened and another man came in, Nicholas watched his entrance with interest. He didn't look any different, just appeared human the way he was. Perhaps he wsn't the only human who came to the cafe often. But don't forget, Nick, some mythical creatures are able to appear human. It might be a disguise. He thought to himself. His mind caught on the words 'story teller' and his interest was truly piqued now. What stories would this man have to tell?

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/monster_6___spider_girl___arachne_by_myrmirada-d5l3smk.png.f717ea30c0dc38bc835d4831279d2566.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="73242" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/monster_6___spider_girl___arachne_by_myrmirada-d5l3smk.png.f717ea30c0dc38bc835d4831279d2566.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

Sarya watched his expressional gesture to Nicholas and how the man reacted, and felt a little out of her league for challenging Jeremy. Her wounds to her pride were soothed by his reminder that there were people who wouldn't mind being tied up by her. Though she didn't quite believe him, it was kind of him to say and it made her feel better. He had always been good about that- about not gloating that he was more loved then anyone in this cafe, and more desired. The days the patrons didn't get to interact with Jeremy were days a lot of people left unhappy.

At the entrance of yet another customer, Sarya's eyes lit up.

"Wilhelm." Though softly spoken, her words had a way of carrying- like a bell on a soft breeze. She smiled, her fangs showing as she looked the immortal up and down. "It has been a long time since you graced us with your stories. Of course we noticed your absence." She approached the man, giving a small bow. "How can we be of service?"

"Oh you really wouldn't want that now? You're contradicting yourself there mousie, you practically asked me to coil around you earlier, I assumed eating something was on the agenda." He snickered before turning his attention towards the door "Now If you don't mind sir, I've an arachnophobe to save from our precious madame." Jeremy bowed before making his way towards Sarya and Wilhelm. "Sarya, do go keep the little mouse company would you? This one fears you'll eat him. He's going through some correctional therapy soon I hope or I'm going to have to be his regular waiter. That's another thing you'd be good at my dear! Therapeutic correction!" He exclaimed like he had just had a sudden epiphany.

Wilhelm smiled at both Jeremy and Sarya, "Ah it's been too long. I'd like a well lit table please, and I'd like to know who that gentleman is that Jeremy was toying with. Once that's out of the way, I shall tell you any story you'd like."

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/monster_6___spider_girl___arachne_by_myrmirada-d5l3smk.png.37934891e4bd710eb407098de6de2607.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="73249" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/monster_6___spider_girl___arachne_by_myrmirada-d5l3smk.png.37934891e4bd710eb407098de6de2607.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

Sarya looked at Jeremy in surprise when she was steered away from Wilhelm. She didn't quite understand what he was talking about, but she allowed herself to go back to Nicholas' side, watching Jeremy in interest as he spoke to Wilhelm. When he asked about Nicholas, Sarya moved behind the silver haired man and leaned against the chair he was sitting in, arms folded caross the top and head resting on her arms.

"Wilhelm, this is Nicholas. He's also a regular, though he shows up much more regularly then you do." She again gave him a fanged smile, truly glad to see the story teller despite Jeremy's confusing words. She patted Nicholas on the head, leaving the table preparation to Jeremy this time since he said he'd be waiting on Wilhelm. No reason to step on anyone's toes here- which was actually hard for her not to do, considering how many legs she had to keep an eye on.

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/66ff528a0703b566af1a0a0dc3c1cd0c.jpg.ac7f88a66eab0abebe3294aeb414a62a.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="73248" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/66ff528a0703b566af1a0a0dc3c1cd0c.jpg.ac7f88a66eab0abebe3294aeb414a62a.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

"I'm just not sure if I'd appreciate being eaten after the fact, as appealing as it is to me now." He muttered. He had never really been the type to take interest in other men... but Jeremy seemed to break most men of that... turning their sexualities from straight to straight and Jeremy. Because who could resist Jeremy's charm when he was really pouring it on. Honestly Nicholas didn't think anyone could, much less a human.

When the other man took interest in him, he gave a slight wave, trying not to follow Sarya' with his gaze as she moved around him. He felt a little... well... put in his place when he received the pat to the head but supposed it could be worse. Again, he was lucky to even be allowed in here considering the usual patrons. Which made him question this WIlhelm person. What was he to be so friendly with everyone else?

"What kinds of stories do you have to tell?" He asked, thirsting for knowledge. At least with talking, he wasn't being quite so flustered by Jeremy... and if this stranger truly had an interesting tale to tell, all the better.

"Wilhelm allow me to escort you to the table, Nicholas is another mouse like you, it's not often we get two human patrons in the same day!" He chuckled before leaning in to whisper to Wilhelm with a serious face "Sarya does not know you are afraid of her kind yet so I advise you continue to act like you are not for the time being, she has very little self confidence as it is and I will not tolerate you destroying it." Once done he turned towards Nicholas with a cheery smile " Little mouse, this man has many stories and I suggest you listen to them and give him your full attention! If I find your gaze trailing off elsewhere I'll have to take you to the back room." He wiggled his eyebrows as he pulled a chair out for Wilhelm.

Wilhelm nodded at Nicholas then thanked Jeremy for his help, and advice. He then took his seat across from Nicholas and struck up a conversation, "Don't let Jeremy get under your skin Nicholas, for as long as I've known him his been a flirt. He's even tried to flirting with me a few times, but just ignore him and he'll move onto someone else, probably. Now, tell young Nicholas, what were your thoughts when you first came to this humble Cafe?"

Xeren rubbed his eyes, in slight annoyence but smiled at the thought of someone so enthusiastic about his food. In a minute he made some pancake batter, opened the fridge to his chocolate supply getting m&ms, chocolate chips and maple syrup. As he did this he heard scuttling like spider legs wriggling. "So she's up already?...."

He then cooked the batter on a frying pan, waiting before flipping it high in the air as it landed perfectly in the pan.

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/66ff528a0703b566af1a0a0dc3c1cd0c.jpg.320365ef31670dd0db01af692c028bcb.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="73255" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_09/66ff528a0703b566af1a0a0dc3c1cd0c.jpg.320365ef31670dd0db01af692c028bcb.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

Nicholas nodded at Wilhelm's words, though he couldn't help but look over at Jeremy again. "I... I really don't mind." He replied, his tone remaining quiet. "I'm just happy to be allowed here." He added before glancing over at Wilhelm with widening eyes. "But, I mean... you probably knew that, right? If you didn't... please don't make me leave. I know I'm not... but are you? I mean... well I''m just not a mythical legend... are you the same as me?" He was able to get that in somewhere between when Wilhelm told him about Jeremy's attempted flirting, and Wilhelm's question about what Nicholas thought of the place.

"When I first came here?" He said, picking up his menu so that he'd have something to hide behind if he needed it. "I thought that everyone had really amazing costumes and that this was some halloween themed place. I felt a bit out of place, but I liked it anyway... I was going to buy my own costume for the next time I came in, actually." He had been considering buying a simple pair of fangs and a high collared cloak. Something simple, not flashy, where he felt he'd be able to blend in without being completely out of place.

Sarya had kept her place on the back of Nicholas' chair until Wilhelm sat down. Then she heard the familiar sizzle of Xeren at work, and politely excused herself. Considering how Jeremy had been quick to get her busy with something else, Sarya wondered if Jeremy thought her to be slacking at her job. So... best go hide in the kitchen with Xeren until she was actually needed.

"Another interesting evening. It looks like Wilhelm has finally decided to rejoin us." Sarya murmured as she watched Xeren flip a pancake with ease, the cooking batter settling perfectly back into the pan. "That's a lot of chocolate for one set of pancakes." She mused, walking up along the far wall to get a better view of Xeren's cooking, while also staying out of the way. She settled herself there, wondering for a moment what it must be like to have feet that could only stay on the ground and not walk up walls and ceilings the way she could.

Xeren saw Sarya "ahh good evening madmoisel, and how are we this fine evening, also to answer your question...more is better, that's my motto" eventually he finished the stack of pancakes. "Whoooooooo ordered the chocolate chip pancakes, with mams, maple syrup a and a Dr pepper" he hollered out, his voice could make a crowd of people seem mute.

He suddenly blinked realising he forgot the bacon and gummy bears "god damp it!"

Wilhelm chuckled a bit at Nicholas, "I can understand wanting to fit in, but if you did do that they may have taken offence. But you didn't so that's good. Oh and to and we your question, yes I am human, but there a few things about me that differ from you. For instance I tell stories, as you probably already know, mostly to just interact with people. And I also am immortal, which is actually a very big difference. I may look like I'm 24, but I am actually a few centuries old. I'm curious, what stories about your life are you willing to tell? Perhaps your life may make for an interesting tale"

"I am well, thank you for asking Xeren." She replied. It never ceased to amuse her how the man could be polite one moment and go to shouting out orders the next second. She shook her head at the 'more is better' but as long as the customer liked it, there was no reason to chastise Xeren for the seeming fact that there was more chocolate then pancake in that mix. She couldn't help the soft chuckle that escaped her as he called out the order.

"Must you always holler that way? You very well know Livi came in and ordered it for herself, the hyperactive little mutt." She said this in a very loving voice- well as loving as Sarya had ever been heard to be. She was truly quite fond of the customers who came in and the people she worked with. "If you'd like, I can bring it over to her." She added. "Considering that is my job, after all."

Nicholas kept glancing between Jeremy and Wilhelm, trying to focus on what Wilhelm was saying but remembering the teasing threat that the serpent man had given. He flushed before shaking his head and returning his attention to Wilhelm. "I could see how that could have been offensive." He murmured in agreement.

"I-Immortal?" He sputtered, shaking his head. "That is quite the difference." He agreed. "Are all creatures immortal or do Lamia and other creatures have life spans, like humans do?"

When Wilhelm inquired after his life, he shook his head. "I'm sure my life appears quite dull in comparison to what you have lived through, and what the other beings in this building have done. In fact, I'm actually quite boring." His voice continued to shrink in on itself against his will. He felt so inferior to the creatures around him.

Jeremy hissed a warning towards Wilhelm "Ignore me? And I don't just flirt with everyone all the time only the people I like." he huffed clearly insulted and not wanting to make such a bad impression on Nicholas "Now old man what do you want food and drink wise?" he seethed clearly annoyed, tail thrashing behind him.
