Fantasy Kaedros the Undying

Well then, let me have a try with this character sketch of mine...

Vital Statistics

Name: Leira Souther

Age: 29

Height:5'8" / 1,78m

Weight: 140 pounds /64 kg

Physical Description: Leira has the typical stature of someone who prefers knowledge over a regular eating shedule - rather skinny, she certainly doesn't look like an impressive warrior at all. She normally wears a long, blue robe showing her affinity to the peacemakers, and a light, leather armor over it. Her thin, pale face is surrounded by untamed, black brown hair. Her narrow lips almost always carry a confident smile, and her dark green eyes seem to tell everyone that she knows more than all the others.

Background: daughter of a wealthy merchant family that married into nobility three generations ago, primarily active in trades with the southern cities, Leira got trained at the Dornosian academy for magic.

Nation of Origin: southern Helendorn, Dornosian

Professional

Trade: mage - specialized on protective combat spells.

Trade rank (apprentice, journeyman…): journeyman

Primary skills: magic, keeping focus, sensing magical changes, minor hand-to-hand combat

Magic

Please see the Magic thread for information on how to fill this section out. Everyone gets fire for free

Elemental affinity:

1. Water

2. Air

3. Fire

4. Earth

Spells/cantrips: List all the spells that your character knows. What do they do and how long does it take to Focus to cast it? These should be mostly centered on your primary elemental affinities.

1. Fire, instant Focus- can start a fire using any easily-flammable fuel source, such as dry wood, tinder, oil.

2. Sense magic - instant. Having studied the elements quite a bit, the caster can notice major changes caused by magic around him. Minor spells are normally too many in numbers to realize all of them.

3. Pacify - focus target-dependent. The caster uses magic to lower the targets aggression.

4. Gust of wind - dependent on the weight of the target. The caster calls the wind to throw the target back on the ground.

5. Deflect arrows - dependent on what is accomplished: Sending them back to the bowmen is almost impossible in time, changing its way only slightly doesn't take too much focus. The caster changes the directions of arrows, making those of allies hit better and those of enemies hit worse. (probably should include other flying objects, too, e.g. spears, stones etc)

6. Fog - a couple of seconds, shorter if the air is wet. The caster gets the water in the air to rain out, providing protection from sight and fire attacks to those close to her.

7. Negate - depends on the spell, approximately as much as the other caster. The caster tries to negate the effect of another casters spell - resulting in everything going the natural way instead of manipulated by magic.

8. Lightning bolt - 1 second. The caster calls a bolt of air energy, hitting a single target.

Magic types:

1.) Fire

2.), 7.) all types

3.), 6.), 8.) Water/Air

4.), 5.) Air

Random thoughts:

Probably belongs to one of the bigger houses of the blue-coats. How is mage training done in this world? Is there some kind of academy, or would I get taught by parents etc. at home?

Ability-wise, I tried to go with a rather defensive set of skills - I'm not too interested in killing people. I don't know if things like 2.) are possible, but I'd imagine that a trained mage might notice those kind of changes. If not, 7.) is probably rather useless aswell, and I might want to change that, too.

Is there anything typical for the people of Khelos? I'd like my character to have been there for a few years to test her skills in diplomacy, and she might have adapted to one or two things...

About the rank: I'm imagining her to have passed the status of a novice, but not being a master of some kind yet. So how would I call something in-between? Would the age be appropriate, or should I add another couple of years?

Any additional thoughts would be appreciated - tell me what's unfitting, and I'll try to adapt.

Let me just tag @Xylin again so that she can take a look at the post above when she's got the time. Or is it too late to join?

I'm putting her details in English since you went all European on me. She's about a 140 pounds and 5'8".

If she's 29 and a mage then she probably went to an academy. Some simple spells one would learn at home but if you're going to focus on being a magician, then that is all you do and you'd have been sent to a school to learn it. Or your parents, if they were wealthy enough, would have hired tutors. It is possible that you would have gone with your parents to Khelos for diplomatic reasons. It is even possible that you have brought some Khelosian diplomats into Helen to discuss some sort of trade or something with the king. Dornosians are always at the heart of negotiations as this is where they excel.

As far as her skill set, people used to be an apprentice, then they graduated to a journeyman, from there they would become a master. If you wanna think of it in terms of education you could think of elementary-high school as an apprentanceship, getting your BA would be like getting a journeyman whereas getting a PhD would be like becoming a master. In order to become a master in a trade/craft, you have to have produced a masterpiece. Then you'd be allowed to join the guild.

Whatever her trade is, at 29 she'd be close to becoming a master of her trade.

I am going to let @Captain Hesperus take a look at your character sheet as well, then we'll need to see where we should plug you in.

Great! I'll wait for the Captain's suggestions then :)

I just added the English units to the cs for a better reference later on - sorry I forgot to do that in the first place...

Is there an academy for magic in Dornos itself? If so, that one would probably be my choice. I like the idea of being part of one of the wealtihier families, but still taking the usual approach to learn magic. If it sounds reasonable, I would have been at the academy until i was 27, then left in company of a tutor to help my parents on their latest diplomatic journey. I'm now back on my way to Helen to finish the deal they negotiated (wools/clothes/something like that), accompanied by a delegation of the respective city down there - with my parents staying in the south, just so that I can prove myself for once.

What would be the "masterpiece" of a battle mage? If it's surviving a battle, that would give me a reason why I would never want to earn the title of a master... I'd go with journeyman for now, and battle mage as my main trade - with Leira preferring to call herself a "diplomat" instead.

To be honest, much of your learning will either be in diplomacy or magic. If your tuition was divided by training in diplomacy or magic, then you'd have fewer spells at your command. I know the Captain will have ideas on that. Diplomacy could be something you learned at your parents' knee.

And, when it comes to magic, a masterpiece would be inventing a new magic, some new spell that has not yet been thought of. It is only a success if other people can Focus their will, say whatever 'magic' words you come up with and get the exact same result. The words themselves are unimportant. At 29, she probably hasn't yet mastered the ability to create her own spell, but she might be working on one. Also as far as families go, the highest Dornosian family would be the Clan Chief of Dornos. Should there be peace, he'd be king. You could always create a family of either aristocratic, noble, or even royal blood for your character.

I prefer specializing in magic - so let me try to get rid of the diplomacy part: Leira studied at the academy until 27, then joined her parents' latest journey to the south as part of their guard , probably in company of a tutor of some sort to still improve while seeing more of the world than just Dornosian walls. With the first negotiations successful, the respective city sends a delegation to Helen, with Leira and a few others from Dornos accompanying them as a symbolic escort. That way, I'd at least have some kind of reason to show up at court. Would that be more appropriate?

I'm not aiming for royal blood or something like that - maybe just a family that got quite wealthy by its trades with the Khelosian cities and married into nobility a few generations ago (if something like that happens...)?

As for the spell - I'll think about that one a bit more, so Leira probably is only at the beginning to form something meaningful, if at all. Maybe she'll develop an idea over time...

@Xylin

Ya, she can be from a wealthy trading family that married into a noble household. That has always been very common. You can decide how far back her nobility goes.

I went with three generations - with my great-grandfather entering the marriage. I was quite busy over the weekend, but at least changed the most important things in the cs according to your suggestions (or at least I hope so).

@Xylin

It looks good. I am going to place her in with Sirinial so that she's part of his team that brought the Cortovians up to Helen.

Sounds good to me - just tag me when you find a good opportunity for her to get involved. Thanks for your help!
