There was a promising young sorcerer born into the Kamo Clan. His name was Mahito Kamo born with the curse technique Idle Transfiguration. He became one of the few special grade sorcerers of his era before he abruptly disappeared. His disappearance was also followed by the disappearance of the entire Kamo Clan.
This removed the balance of power between the Gojo and Zenin clans. Both clans wanted to become the top of the Jujutsu World. The Zenin Clan took theirs headquarters to Kyoto while the Gojo Clan headquartered themselves in Tokyo both at the foci of Jujutsu World. Conflict was imminent but it took an entire generation for it to start.
It was started when the Six Eyes User Satoru Gojo refused to sacrifice the Star Plasma Vessel Riko Amanai to Tengen. The Zenin clan had taken hostage Megumi Fushiguro to send Toji Fushiguro after the girl. Gojo managed to subdue and bring the Toji Fushiguro to his side with the promise of rescuing his child. Gojo not only took Megumi but also rescued several black sheep among the Zenin clans children.
The Zenin clan declared war after this starting the ten years of war within Jujutsu Society. Between the exorcism of curse spirits, Sorcerers tend to be recruited to either the Gojo side or the Zenin side. The Gojo side are the radical faction while the Zenin are seen as conservatives. There are some sorcerers who choose to stay out of the conflict between clans in favor of doing their actual job. Even then sometimes that does not stop them from being caught in the crossfire or having to deal with the collateral damage.
