What is a Heavy Metal?
Heavy Metals are, in the broadest sense, humans who have undergone metallic, if not cybernetic, augmentation. Corporations of this era refined Technologies of the the past 3 centuries in the latter half of this century to replace or augment portions of the human body. Heavy Metal augmentations come in a variety of types, shapes, sizes and specializations. Debatably more machine than man, Heavy Metal are cyborgs of the 21st century. All Heavy Metal have at least 80% organic brain matter, and thus are not considered “robots,” despite the popularity of that (derogatory) term.
The legal systems of every jurisdiction that allows augmenting considers these individuals human where applicable under law. In most countries, augmenting a person against their will is illegal and receives the same enforcement as gross medical malpractice or attempted murder. The SPW Foundation's official stance is that it makes no distinction between these cyborgs and humans apart from the possible accommodations an individual may require. SPW has hired many HeavyMetal individuals and its progressive anti-harassment policy specifically prohibits discrimination based on modification or lack thereof. Unfortunately, the wider world is still having trouble accepting HeavyMetal in daily human society. Heavy Metal in some areas have developed counter-culture societies of their own as a reaction to the discrimination of society.
Heavy Metal are more susceptible to damage from the same sorts of elements or circumstances that electronic devices are. However, they are considered sturdier and more physically resilient than humans. Heavy Metal require regular maintenance. It is recommended for these individuals be accompanied by an Engineer on extended excursions. If you are a Heavy Metal in need of an Engineer companion, please contact the Speedwagon Foundation - we will provide support.
