Graded [Azuran City] The Celestine Academy for Seekers of Lore and Legends

After it appeared that his spell had worked, Thomas releases it with a sigh, rubbing his temples due to an unforeseen headache which had just hit him. Echo looks much more healed now with his temporal restoration and Eris with her much better healing abilities. Strength doesn't happen right away, therefore he needs to do everything he can to gain the mastery he always dreamed of. Before he arrived to this area, he was living with his parents and practicing his current spells. Suddenly, he heard about a fire that had broken out in a nearby village. Thomas ran as fast as he could to get to this village in time but by then most of the carnage was already done. He saved as many villagers as he could, using time skip to send the villagers one hour into the future while everything was being cleaned up and the fires were being extinguished. But there were a lot of burnt corpses he was unable to help. It was his first time seeing such a brutal sight, and he fell to the ground screaming in pain, anguish and despair with tears falling down his face, mourning the loss of some villagers who had once been his very good friends. He stayed there for several hours wallowing in his weakness, vowing that something like this would never happen again.

And yet, here he was in the school, something much the same having happened a few minutes ago. Thomas was somewhat emotional which was surprising for men in this world. But this time only silent tears fell from his face as he looked up to meet Echo's eyes, and just then saw her tablet with what she wrote on it. "Different... Body parts?" He hadn't thought about targeting different body parts before, and now that he has been told about it, he will remember that for sure to help in the next deadly fight when that day chose to arrive. He clasped Echo's hands and smiled, thanking her profusely. "That's brilliant! I will remember that, and someday I'll use what you have told me just now to save thousands of lives! And I'll tell them all about you and how amazing you are..." Wait, did I really just say that out loud? Thomas' face turns bright red, realizing he may have gone a tad too far. Everything just came spilling out of him in words about Echo which had been moving through his brain for some time now. He sheepishly lets go of her hands and laughs nervously, scratching his head randomly.

Noelle's music helped to soothe the weary recruits. Not all wanted to continue. Some had failed both with the block and now succumbed to the onslaught of Volthor. Even if Thomas, Noelle, and especially Eris were able to restore their bodies, their mettle as adventures and seekers of lore and fortune had been tested. Some were found wanting. Thus from the original thirty, only twenty recruits remained. As the majority of the focus and effort was on helping and sorting out the students, few if any were paying attention to Amanda.

"Sir Braxus," Amanda addressed him, her voice respectful but concerned. "Given the circumstances and the forbidden magic that Potter employed, what do you intend to do with him? Will he be held here or escorted to the capital for judgment? He has committed a taboo and as such the kingdom will undoubtidly call for his exile if not worse" She knew that Sir Braxus's decision would likely carry significant consequences for Potter's future, and Amanda was curious to see how the academy would handle this complex situation. That being said, would the Dragonborn be so bold as to harbor a criminal in the presence of a baron's aid? [Law Expert]

Braxus turned his smoldering gaze on Amanda as the young mage questioned him about the summoner boy's fate. Smoke curled from his nostrils, a sign of building annoyance. Braxus drew himself up to his full imposing height, wings half unfurling. This upstart newcomer dared lecture him about protocol?

"Another word, and I'll have you up before the disciplinary committee for interfering with academy affairs," he growled. "This is your only warning, recruit. Professors do not answer to students. Know your place and shut your mouth before you find yourself expelled before your first day of class."

His tone brooked no argument. Meddling in administrative matters had earned Amanda a firm reprimand. Like any dragon, Braxus's pride was not to be trifled with, even by well-meaning youths.

He walked over to Bartholomew after Eris's magic had healed his face. "Had enough for today?"

"No, Sir Braxus. I am happy to continue." Bartholomew seethed as he observed the first-years receiving praise and congratulations after the battle. It was so unfair! He had worked for years to gain status at the academy through bullying and displays of power. Yet these newcomers waltzed in and immediately outshone him, without even trying! The smug looks on their faces as they embraced and laughed together made Bartholomew's blood boil. That ridiculous mermaid Noelle slipping past him with her trickery. The haughty know-it-all Amanda daring to lecture a professor on protocol. And worst of all, the scrawny time mage Thomas showing off such flashy magic and acting the hero.

Bartholomew scowled and rubbed his healed cheek. He could still feel the sting of his warped, gangrenous face before the healers tended to him. Curse that demon for marring his flawless features! Though the flesh wound was repaired, Bartholomew's ego had taken a severe bruising this day.

These first-years needed to be taught a lesson in respecting their elders. Bartholomew vowed he would find a way to get back at them for this humiliation. Perhaps an "accidental" potions mishap in class? Or he could whisper vicious rumors to undermine their social standing. Oh, the agonizing trials he would put them through once classes started!

For now, he bit his tongue, not wanting to anger Braxus further. But his resentment simmered below the surface as he plotted petty schemes of revenge. No upstart runts would shown him up for long - he would make their lives at the academy utterly miserable if it was the last thing he did!

After dismissing Amanda, Sir Braxus strode over to where the unconscious Potter was being tended by Dante and the other professors. The summoner's wounds had been healed, but he remained unresponsive.

"How is the fool?" Braxus rumbled, peering down at Potter's pale face.

Dante shook his head. "Alive, but whatever backlash that demon unleashed has sent his mind far away. I've tried every reviving enchantment short of resurrection."

The tiefling warlock sighed, running a hand through his white hair. "Reckless rituals - they always end in catastrophe. We'll be lucky if he wakes at all, if ever or if he is at all sane."

Braxus snorted, smoke streaming from his nostrils. "Many lessons for the recruits today." His tone was stern, but not entirely devoid of sympathy. Even reckless youths did not fully deserve such grim fates.

"Send him to the infirmary and let the Headmaster sort it out." Braxus clasped Dante's shoulder firmly before moving to address the weary but triumphant students.

As the chaos died down, Braxus called the weary but satisfied students to gather round.

"You've all shown spirit and skill today, initiates. But your trials are not over yet." The old dragonborn's voice rumbled through the hall. At a gesture, the remaining student proctors began handing out puzzling contraptions - slender metal boxes with intricate rune locks.

"Inside each is a gossamer cocoon, spun by the rare Twilight Gem butterflies," Braxus explained. "But beware - some may carry a vile Ignoble Hell Fly parasite." His lip curled in distaste.

"Work in groups of four. Unlock the puzzle box and inspect the cocoon within. Resolve any infested before they are consumed in hellish fire. Aid the rest so the Gem may emerge unharmed. Let's see if you have the wisdom to know the difference."

As the initiates formed their teams, the proctors distributed the mystical containers. Each was decorated with delicate celestial motifs and hummed with latent magic. Just handling them seemed to impart a sense of their importance.

The initiates bent their heads together, studying the intricate locks and debating approaches in hushed voices. All were aware of the precious cargo within, and the dire consequences of making the wrong choice. Soft chimes and clicks echoed around the hall as they began manipulating the sliding puzzle boxes.

This trial would test their powers of deduction, observation, and care in equal measure. And the fate of a rare, invaluable magical creature rested on their success...

OOC: For the third and final challenge of the entrance exam, you need to form a "party of four" that balances out your skills and abilities. Then you will need to solve seven challenges:
Here are 7 potential challenges related to the cocoon puzzle trial, with difficulty levels:

  1. Deciphering the Rune Lock (Difficulty: 6). Figuring out how to properly align the mystical runes to unlock the box. Requires magical aptitude, intellect, and pattern recognition.
  2. Handling the Delicate Cocoon (Difficulty: 5). Removing the cocoon without damaging the precious silk. Needs a gentle touch and care in manipulation.
  3. Detecting Parasite Signs (Difficulty: 7). Identifying subtle visual or auditory cues that signal an Ignoble Hell Fly infestation. Hard to spot - may require multiple perceptions.
    1. Success 1: IF 1+ party members team up and hit the difficulty you pass and are able to move to the next step.
    2. Success 2: IF your party is able to get a success twice, then you gain an "insight". Insights can either:
      1. (a) lower the difficulty of a subsequent task by the amount the difficulty is exceeded. 7 = +1; 8 = +2; 9 = +3. OR
      2. (b) change the nature of subsequent challenge by figuring out some unique dimension of it that wasn't previously realized, which is like a player introduced "twist".
  4. Purifying Corrupted Cocoons (Difficulty: 8). Using spells or alchemical concoctions to cleanse infected cocoons without destroying them. Very challenging blend of skills.
  5. Coaxing an Emergence (Difficulty: 6). Guiding a healthy butterfly out of its cocoon without disturbing the silk. Requires patience and a nurturing approach.
  6. If you fail:
    1. Fending Off Hell Flies (Difficulty: 7 x2). Battling a swarm of angry parasites if incorrectly aids an infested cocoon. Combat ability and area attacks helpful.
  7. Preserving the Cocoon (Difficulty: 5). Keeping the intact cocoon in good condition after the butterfly emerges for harvest. Just needs care when handling.
You are free to describe how you do it and narrate your success if you are able to accomplish this as a group. Good luck!

Amanda was taken aback by the intensity of Sir Braxus's response. The dragonborn warrior's warning was stern and unyielding, making it clear that questioning his authority in this matter was not to be tolerated. She swallowed her concerns and nodded, understanding that her inquiry had crossed a line. Amanda had sought clarification, not confrontation, and she now realized that challenging a senior professor's decision was not a wise course of action. She had much to learn about the academy's hierarchy and protocols.

"I apologize, Sir Braxus," Amanda replied, her tone respectful and contrite. "I meant no disrespect. I will heed your counsel and defer to the academy's procedures." She lowered her gaze, acknowledging her error in judgment.

With that, Amanda stepped back, allowing the academy's staff to handle the aftermath of the chaotic exam. Her focus had been on ensuring that the situation was addressed appropriately, but now she understood that she needed to trust in the academy's established procedures and the wisdom of its professors. She resolved to learn from this experience and approach such matters with greater caution in the future.

That being said, she did gain a valuable glimpse of insight into Sir Braxus and the academy at large. Her question and the subsequent result had made clear the academy was far more shady than Amanda originally thought. Did the count know of this? Clearly, this wasn't the first time forbidden magic had been used on campus. That combined with the store of artifacts the academy held within its walls left Amanda quite curious as to just how much leeway the Academy really had and by extension The Imperial Logia Academy of Ryken.

A notion she would be sure to research later. Given she wouldn't be having classes anyway.

But now with the weight of the aftermath now solely on the academy's shoulders, Amanda was free to relax and catch her breath before the next exam.

Amanda listened attentively to Sir Braxus's instructions, her earlier encounter with the chaotic summoning fresh in her mind. This new trial, involving delicate butterfly cocoons and the potential for parasitic infestations, intrigued her. It was another test of their abilities and decision-making, a challenge she was ready to face.

As the puzzle boxes were distributed, Amanda joined a group with Noelle, Echo, and Thomas. She was familiar with Noelle from their earlier encounter, and Echo and Thomas had shown their prowess during the earlier confrontation with the demon. With the box in front of them, Amanda examined the intricate locks and listened to her teammates' thoughts on how to approach the task. She shared her own insights, suggesting they start by unlocking the box and looking for any clues that might reveal whether a cocoon was infested.

"We should be methodical," Amanda suggested. "First, let's identify the runes and their significance. Then, we can examine the cocoons carefully, looking for any signs of the Gem or any abnormalities. If we're unsure about the cocoon, we should isolate it until we're certain. Safety first."

She took a moment to admire the craftsmanship of the puzzle box before she began working on unlocking it. Her nimble fingers moved with nimble precision as she attempted to decipher the runes and open the container. Amanda was determined to approach this challenge with the same meticulous care she applied to her own tinkering and engineering work. That being said this little trinket was nothing compared to the fowl enigma she had previously decoded alongside Noelle. In fact, it was rather anticlimactic how easily the mechanism was solved but then again this was a class orientated around adventurers for the most part. What was she to expect as a crafter? [10,000 Hours? Rookie Numbers! (F)]

Within a few moments, the box was opened and the cocoon was revealed for the group to see.

With utmost care, Amanda reached inside the box, her fingers trembling slightly with anticipation. She cradled the cocoon delicately, ensuring not to apply any unnecessary pressure. It was a fragile thing, and she had no intention of harming the precious creature within. [A Crafters Touch (E)]

"Got it," she whispered to her team, her eyes focused on the cocoon. "Now, let's examine it closely to make sure it's safe." Amanda turned her attention to the cocoon, inspecting it for any signs of infestation or abnormalities, all the while keeping her touch gentle and cautious. [A Gamer's 6th Sense (D)]

Thomas watches with silent wonder how Amanda seemingly flawlessly completes the first three puzzles. This girl is quite knowledgeable, maybe he could learn some things from her in his pursuit to become a strong chronomancer. He tries to not let his wonder show on his face, so he puts his mind to figuring out how the fourth step is solved. Purification isn't his expertise at all, but maybe temporal restoration would do something useful. If not, and a swarm ends up attacking, he has time warp to get rid of five hell flies temporarily. WAIT! Echo was saying I could target things other than the whole enemy, in which case I wouldn't need to send the entire form of the flies. Okay, that's the plan if this doesn't work.

Thomas uses [Temporal Restoration] on the cocoon purely as an experimental move to see what would happen. Once again, the shimmery green color of his time magic flows out from his hands in a 15 foot radius. He knows healing doesn't count as purification, but maybe if it's combined with something else it would work. "I don't know if this will work, but anyone else can jump in if they have an idea of how to purify the cocoon. My temporal restoration by itself isn't purification, it only heals small cuts and bruises. I'm sure we can pull this off without a hitch, we've got the right people around for it to work. I can keep this up for a good amount of time."

Echo Halflight
Echo watched Thomas with a raised eyebrow for a moment, it was true that she was amazing, the prodigal daughter of the Tuatha, but something about his behavior right after saying it had a certain 'je ne sais quoi' to it. If she weren't mute, it might have made her laugh.

The exam continued, that know-it-all having received a stern talking to from the dragonkin, and the entrants were divided into groups of four. It went without saying that her and Thomas would be half the team, and the other half ended up being an aquatic and the know-it-all; still though, she supposed if one had to put up with a know-it-all, there was no better time to do so.

She had no notion of operating the puzzle box herself, walking in a straight line was a difficult enough feat at times, she was certain to break something delicate if she were given the item. Instead, she watched with Thomas in wonder as Amanda deftly twisted and turned the mechanisms of the box until it had unraveled itself and revealed the chrysalis inside. Woefully out of her depth when it came to matters of subtlety such as this, Echo simply watched with keen interest, activating her Balor's Eye and doing her best to assist Amanda in ascertaining the quality of the cocoon.

Her spear was held loosely in a reverse grip. Ignoble Hell Parasites were unknown to her, but the name left little to the imagination and she was sure to get a kick out of spearing them out of the air, if all else failed.

Eris sighed in relief as the evil god was put down; looking around at the chaos, she saw the mute fae girl she had met at Tripoint. She was curious about that spear, though it seemed to come at a cost to her, at least by the looks of it. She then shifted her gaze toward the student who had caused the whole situation, though he seemed to be getting tended to, so she didn't see the need to rush over and figure out what was happening. From where she was standing, the whole incident was due to the student's inability to control their summoning, though the summon he picked wasn't the best one to use in this situation.

She didn't want to be the one to deal with the boy's actions, so she felt it was best to allow the full-time staff deal with the situation as Amanda talked to Sir Braxus, Eris focused her attention on the two. She agreed with Amanda, though the professor also did have a point shouting what the law required didn't matter in this situation. But at the same time how Braxus responded was uncalled for in her opinion. Something she would bring up at a later date but, the examination had to go on and it seemed like they were eager for the next test. When Eris was confident that most of the injured had their wounds healed to the best of the magic she was currently using she dropped her barrier as the light disappeared.

I wonder what the next test will be? However, I think I will take a little more of an alert stance based on that last test. Eris thought to herself as she joined Sir Braxus as he explained the next part of the exam. To which Eris cocked an eyebrow as the test was explained to the group. Her eyes scanned over the group of students as she was curious to see who was going to form up with whom. She figured this was a test of character and problem-solving. But who was going to solve the puzzle first? That was the million-dollar question. So she seems to be taking charge now that is interesting, though will the others listen? Eris thought to herself resting her gaze on Amanda watching from afar.

The player characters Amanda, Thomas, Echo, and Noelle formed one of the quads for the cocoon challenge. The other groups consisted of:
  • Rowan, Iris, Hazel & Jade: These elf siblings and cousins worked seamlessly together, combining their natural attunement to nature with advanced magic.
  • Damien, Cassius, Octavia & Lilith: Four intimidating tiefling youths who used their infernal gifts to spot occult dangers.
  • Cedric, Neville, Luna & Cho: Eccentric outcasts who saw things differently, for better or worse. Luna's intuitions were uncanny, but so were her eyes which looked like two full moons.
  • Godric, Helga, Rowena & Salazar: Prodigies from the upper crust of Ryke who accomplished much when working together. Salazar seemed to have little patience for the others.
The other quads set to work inspecting their puzzle boxes and cocoons, conversing in hushed tones. The vaulted hall was filled with the soft sounds of sliding runes, muted clicks, and the occasional excited "Aha!" as groups deciphered their locks.

As Amanda's group swiftly unlocked their puzzle box and extracted the cocoon, murmurs rippled through the hall. The other students couldn't help but take notice as Amanda moved through the initial steps with seemingly effortless skill.

At one table, the tiefling quad stared stone-faced, refusing to show any reaction. Though perhaps irked at being upstaged, they remained focused on their own puzzle.

The elf siblings smiled and gave nods of acknowledgement at Amanda's feat. "Well done!" Iris said warmly. They continued trying to coax their own box open through songs and spells.

Meanwhile, the eccentric group containing Luna completely ignored the happenings around them, too engrossed in their attempt to dismantle the entire puzzle. "If we take it apart piece by piece, the cocoon is sure to emerge," Luna declared dreamily.

The rich, noble class group seemed torn between admiration and envy. "Hmph, I should have recruited Amanda," Salazar muttered under his breath, even as the others congratulated Amanda's team.

Most dramatic was the quartet containing the bombastic Godric. In his enthusiasm, Godric had accidentally cracked their puzzle box, eliciting groans from his teammates. "Gads! Our box is damaged thanks to my oafish blunder," Godric lamented. "We shall have to acquire another and learn from the diligent example set by Amanda's group!"

To which, Salazar shouted, "You idiot, there aren't any more boxes. It's not like we go back in time and-" Salazar paused, looking towards Thomas. He gathered up the box and walked towards Thomas, "I know we are rivals, but would you do me a solid favor and rewind time like you do?" He paused, watching Amanda lift out the cocoon and hand it to the rest of her group. "I'll wait." He sighed as Thomas and Echo went to work.

As Amanda carefully inspected the unwrapped cocoon, Thomas channeled his temporal magic over it, watching for any signs of change. Meanwhile, Echo focused her preternatural senses, peering intently for any abnormalities.

At first, nothing seemed amiss with the cocoon's smooth, glimmering surface. But under their combined scrutiny, faint discrepancies became apparent. Strange shadowy markings marred one side, and an ominous faint hissing emanated from within. It was subtle but something was inside. A rasping, almost like many small wings fluttering. And the silk seemed...tainted, somehow. By joining their talents, Thomas and Echo had uncovered clear evidence of an Ignoble Hell Fly infestation.

At the next table over, the intimidating tiefling quad was swiftly gaining ground on Amanda's team. Damien's innate infernal magic made short work of deciphering the runes, while Lilith handled the cocoon with unexpected care. Cassius and Octavia soon confirmed signs of corruption through eerie chants.

Emboldened by their early successes, the tieflings decided to attempt purifying the cocoon rather than burning it outright. But their skills at cleansing rituals fell short. As Damien gingerly helped the cocoon open, a swarm of furious Hell Flies erupted forth!

Chaos erupted at the tieflings' table. The ravenous parasites immediately set upon the startled students, biting and stinging viciously. Octavia shrieked as the hellish insects tangled in her long hair. Cassius swatted desperately at the cloud, but the flies evaded his clumsy blows.

Lilith responded quickly, conjuring a burst of eldritch fire to incinerate several of the nasty bugs. "We've got to contain them before they spread!" she yelled over the angry buzzing.

But more flies continued forcing their way from the splitting cocoon. Soon the tieflings were surrounded by a whirling vortex of snapping jaws and lashing stingers. Their earlier confidence had led them to disaster! Now they struggled just to survive the frenzied insectoid onslaught.

The other students looked on in dismay, heeding this stark warning about acting rashly before confirming their choices. Pausing to confer could make all the difference between success and calamity.

Just when it seemed the situation couldn't get worse for the embattled tieflings, it took a truly gruesome turn. The vicious Hell Flies began burrowing directly into their flesh, implanting writhing maggots beneath their skin!

Cassius howled as one of the gleaming white grubs emerged from a bloody hole in his forearm. He clawed frantically at the wound, trying to extract the horror, but it had already burrowed deep into his tissues. More larvae could be seen squirming under his skin, migrating through his muscles.

Octavia collapsed to her knees, gagging as maggots pushed up under the surface of her neck. Tears streamed from her eyes at the nightmarish infestation. "Get them out of me!" she pleaded to no avail, as the things had already taken up residence inside her.

Seeing two of their own already overwhelmed by the parasitic invasion, Damien and Lilith redoubled their mystical counterattacks. Lilith immolated a whole section of her robes that had become covered in the wriggling menaces. Damien summoned a banishing rune that dissolved several flies into acrid smoke. But the reprieve was short-lived.

The rapacious Hell Flies had found fertile living hosts in the tieflings' bodies. Soon, the tiny white grubs were streaming from multiple entry wounds, a nightmarish flow of squirming maggots. The tieflings' screams of revulsion and agony echoed through the hall as the parasites claimed them.

Several of the other quads just stared on in horror!

Sir Braxus stoically watched the chaos unfold like a statue, unmoving and aloof.

OOC: State of Affairs. 3/7 successes. 2/7 current failures unless you use combo or team-up or stunts.

  1. Deciphering the Rune Lock (Difficulty: 6). Figuring out how to properly align the mystical runes to unlock the box. Requires magical aptitude, intellect, and pattern recognition.
    1. >>Amanda Success !!
  2. Handling the Delicate Cocoon (Difficulty: 5). Removing the cocoon without damaging the precious silk. Needs a gentle touch and care in manipulation.
    1. >>Amanda Success !!
    2. >> Amanda Success !!
    3. Success 2: IF your party is able to get a success twice, then you gain an "insight". Insights can either:
    4. >> Echo has 5, would need to get higher with support from Thomas/Noelle.
    1. >> Thomas Domain Effectiveness is: 7 Magic E (2) + Catalyst E (2) + Intelligence D (3), would need to get higher with support from Echo/Noelle.

Optionally, you can help with the horrible Hell Fly infestation unless saxon saxon decides to intervene. That's up to Eris. If other players want to help you can, but you'd use up one of your remaining actions. Since Amanda is done and perhaps bored, I'll let her contribute an action towards helping if she wants.

Also, Darkbloom Darkbloom can help out the group of rich, Nobles by turning back time with the time domain, but watch your available actions! You only have 2 left. Amanda could potentially offer some guidance or hints.

He heard a lot of things mentioned about Amanda, not being particularly surprised because he had watched her solve the first three puzzles. Yes, everyone on his team was lucky to have her assistance, since he also wasn't sure how he would've began. While Thomas was attempting to use temporal restoration on the cocoon, one of the students on the other team walked up to him with a cocoon.

He was temporarily speechless. Rival...? When did that happen? If Thomas had a free hand to scratch his head he would. Before he could reply though, there was some panic over at the tiefling's table. He looked to see what was happening, hearing the sound of the hissing from that table's cocoon. Shortly after that, all hell flies broke loose, swarming around the tieflings and causing a most unsettling sight. Thomas felt his domain itching to be used, so to stop the events at the tiefling table he uses [Domain - Time]. A large green, shimmery clock appears in the space above everyone. The clock hands start rotating slowly backwards and speed up as time is reversed to Thomas' desired stopping point, which is about a minute before the cocoon erupts. The time domain clock disappears as time is restored to a previous point. Thomas can see the black spots starting to appear on their cocoon. He shouts over to the tieflings, "BURN IT! YOU AREN'T GOING TO BE ABLE TO PURIFY THE COCOON! Trust me, this is for all your sakes!" Thomas cries, hoping his expression looks urgent and pleading enough to change the mind of the tieflings to burn the cocoon instead of attempting to purify it.

The healing was a success. Partially thanks to Noelle’s music. Or she makes herself believe. Still several of the candidates had decided to quit after the first two tests. A bummer. But something that was to be expected. An encounter with such a demon is a test of someone's morale.
Although she was occupied with playing the music for now Noelle did notice that Sir Braxus seemed to be dissatisfied with Amanda. Unaware of the girl’s disrespect towards the teacher’s authority. It made her worried. It would be bad if she lost the currently only familiar person she knew here.
When the tests were ready to continue Noelle listened diligently to what the teacher had to say. The next test was to help a butterfly in the puzzle box emerge from its cocoon and not turn into some hellish pest. Noelle has grouped up with Amanda, the strong fae and the time mage. Not a bad team.
It was amazing to see how fast Amanda was able to open the lockbox revealing the cocoon inside. Noelle wanted to help with examining the cocoon for any infections together with Amanda and Echo. She could listen if anything sounded out of order like she tried with the enigma before. Then she got a spring of inspiration. She vaguely remembered that one could send high-frequency sound into something and then listen to the echo of it to find things inside of the object without the need to physically disturb it. It was worth a shot. Noelle focused on the cocoon, raised her lyre and pulled string unleashing her [So-nar] at the cocoon. a high-pitched note was sent towards the cocoon while Noelle closed her eyes and listened in the hope she could hear something from the cocoon to identify if something was wrong or not.

As Amanda's classmates offered their kind words and expressions of admiration, her face would break into a faint but genuine smile. It wasn't in her nature to seek the spotlight or bask in praise, but the camaraderie and acknowledgment from her peers were undoubtedly heartening.

She'd give a nod of gratitude, her eyes briefly meeting those of her classmates as a sign of appreciation for their encouragement.

Amanda then took a moment to refocus the group's attention on the task at hand, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and efficiency in solving the puzzle boxes and ensuring the safety of the Twilight Gem butterflies. Ensurance that very likely had just saved her group from a gruesome faith as was apparent given the sudden outburst of screaming.

Indeed the situation had escalated into a horrifying ordeal as the Hell Flies burrowed into the tiefling quad's bodies, causing excruciating pain and chaos. While other students watched in shock and fear, Amanda's group had uncovered a different kind of infestation within their own cocoon - a chilling sign that their initial impression had been incorrect.

Amanda knew that swift action was required. Ignoble Hell Flies were not to be underestimated, and she had to prevent their spread. She turned to her teammates, a sense of urgency in her voice.

"We've got an infested cocoon here," Amanda warned her group. "Here, Let me help you Echo and Noelle, try and pinpoint the core of the infection so Thomas can better deal with it."

Thomas couldn't rewind time yet. His domain was time but time was a higher truth that was like grasping handfuls of sand. It was possible to grab but hard to hold and impossible to do much with. While he fails to rewind time in the way he'd hoped, nevertheless Thomas is able to affect the flies by entangling their current state with their past state. It was something akin to a combination of mind control and nullification in a way that caused the flies to think they were once more within the cocoon waiting to emerge. With some quick work and teamwork, the tiefling group was able to get the infestation under control. However, the flies had ruined the cocoon and Sir Praxis deemed them failures.

Meanwhile, Salazar watched Thomas' time manipulation with interest in his eyes. Although Thomas tried to use his time reversal magics on the broken box, it didn't seem to work. Perhaps the intricies were too much for Thomas' current proficiency. Still Thomas gained some insights into the nature of time and its flows. However, Salazar was less then pleased that this Hail Mary hadn't worked. "Pity," Salazar said, leaving Thomas.

Meanwhile, with Noelle's help and Amanda's support, the trio with Echo were able to not only detect new and unusual characteristics of the parasitic Hell Flies within the cocoon but even identify new and unusual ways Thomas might purify. the corrupted cocoon. Indeed, it was with his partial successes and failures that Thomas understood how to isolate and paralyze the as yet immature Hell Flies within the cocoon.

OOC: State of Affairs. 5/7 successes. Just two more steps to go: Coaxing an Emergence (Difficulty 6) and Preserving the Cocoon (Difficulty 5).

    2. >> Amanda Success !!
    3. Success 2: IF your party is able to get a success twice, then you gain an "insight". Insights can either:
    4. Success Echo and Noelle and Amanda team up (Team-up plus Noelle's Combo) 7 = +1
    1. >> Thomas Domain Effectiveness is: 9, Success!!
  5. Coaxing an Emergence (Difficulty: 6). Guiding a healthy butterfly out of its cocoon without disturbing the silk. Requires patience and a nurturing approach.
  6. Preserving the Cocoon (Difficulty: 5). Keeping the intact cocoon in good condition after the butterfly emerges for harvest. Just needs care when handling.

As hard as Thomas had tried to rewind time, it didn't work. However, there was another interesting effect that happened. In the eyes of Thomas it appeared as if the flies believed nothing had happened yet. His head was hurting from the effort of controlling time the way he imagined, but it seems the tieflings are all right. Thomas gave a sigh of relief as he turned to Salazar to try rewinding time on his cocoon but no such luck. The magic surrounding the cocoon was much too complex for him to begin understanding, which he found quite intriguing. Even though things haven't been going the way he wanted, some semblance of understanding was beginning to form in his mind as the magic of time was touching his fingertips and then quickly escaping like trying to hold fistfuls of sand. This will require a lot more study in the future at the academy. But then his outing with Echo came to mind, and he turns to look in her direction. After the cocoon has been successfully purified he goes to stand or sit next to her. "Hey, that first test was crazy wasn't it?" Nervous laughter escapes his lips unintentionally as his close proximity to her is affecting his ability to think straight. "By the way, I think a trip into the city sounds amazing, especially with you!" He quickly looks away, embarrassed and bashful by his straight-forwardness. Maybe the presence of that rude, uncouth proctor was urging him on to win over Echo as soon as he can. Although Thomas preferred a slow process, some guys won't give him that chance. Alas, the team still has two more challenges to complete. Thomas makes a mental note to find and talk to the tieflings and Salazar later. He looks at Noelle, who has the quite impressive music magic. "Hey, I think you would be the best for this next part. You can use your instrument and if you want, your voice to coax the butterfly's emergence."

The chamber was abuzz with a mixture of tension and anticipation as Amanda's group neared the culmination of their efforts. The delicate gossamer cocoon lay before them, bathed in a soft, otherworldly glow. It was a testament to the Twilight Gem butterfly's exquisite craftsmanship. But beneath its fragile exterior, the subtle hum of magic hinted at the mysteries it held within.

Amanda approached the cocoon with reverence, her nimble fingers trembling ever so slightly with a blend of excitement and caution. The eyes of her teammates and the surrounding students were fixed on her as she prepared to unlock the cocoon's secrets.

Amanda's hands delicately hovered over the cocoon. Her fingertips barely made contact with the luminescent silk.

Her first task was to determine the condition of the butterfly within. With the touch of a gloved finger, she lightly tapped the cocoon, eliciting a faint, melodic chime that resonated through the room. The sound reverberated with the essence of the Twilight Gem butterfly, its presence within the cocoon confirmed.

A soft, inquisitive hum escaped her lips as she carefully inspected the cocoon, searching for any irregularities or signs of distress. Her trained eye discerned the delicate patterns and gradients in the silken structure, as if reading the butterfly's life story etched into the fabric.

With gentle, measured movements, Amanda then began to manipulate the cocoon's surface. Her fingertips traced the minuscule runes etched into the silk, deciphering their purpose. Each rune represented a layer of enchantment, a safeguard designed to protect the precious inhabitant within. As her gloved fingers danced over the runes, she whispered words of encouragement to the butterfly within, as though sharing a silent conversation. [10,000 Hours? Rookie Numbers! (F)]

The first layer unfurled like a delicate petal, revealing the inner sanctum of the cocoon. Inside, the Twilight Gem butterfly shimmered with ethereal radiance, its wings adorned with iridescent patterns that seemed to shift and change with every passing second. It was a sight to behold, a living work of art forged by nature's magic.

Amanda's hands continued their precise dance as she coaxed the butterfly further from its cocoon. She spoke soothingly, her voice a soft, melodic cadence that echoed through the chamber. The enchantments responded to her guidance, allowing the butterfly to emerge gracefully, its fragile form bathed in the soft, radiant glow of the cocoon.

As the butterfly unfurled its wings, a sense of wonder filled the room. It hovered in the air for a moment, its translucent wings catching the ambient light. The delicate creature was a symbol of beauty, resilience, and the intricate balance of nature's wonders.

Amanda extended her gloved hand, her heart filled with reverence for the Twilight Gem butterfly. With a gentle, open palm, she offered the creature a choice – to return to the cocoon or to venture forth into the world beyond. It was a moment of mutual understanding, a silent contract between human and butterfly.

For a heartbeat, the butterfly hesitated, its iridescent wings quivering in the air. Then, as if acknowledging Amanda's respect, it alighted on her outstretched hand. The sensation of its touch was a whisper of enchantment, a connection forged between two beings.

With utmost care, Amanda cradled the butterfly, her gloved fingers barely brushing its fragile form. She marveled at its iridescent wings, the delicate veins that carried the essence of magic, and the ethereal patterns that seemed to dance with life.

With the butterfly now safe, Amanda's attention turned to the delicate cocoon left behind. The intricate patterns on the cocoon seemed to shimmer with a subtle, otherworldly light, a testament to the Twilight Gem butterfly's ethereal nature.

Gently, she reached for the cocoon, her fingertips barely making contact with the surface. Amanda knew that even the slightest disturbance could disrupt the fragile structure, and she proceeded with utmost caution. Her hands, which had deftly handled spells and mechanisms, now moved with a tenderness reserved for the most delicate of treasures. [A Crafters Touch (E)]

As her fingers closed around the cocoon, Amanda could feel its smooth, cool texture. It was as if she held a piece of pure magic in her hands, a testament to the natural world's capacity for wonder. The cocoon responded to her touch, emitting a soft, melodious hum, a harmonious resonance that seemed to echo through the hall.

With great care, Amanda lifted the cocoon from its resting place and placed it on a small, velvet-lined tray that had been prepared. The tray provided a stable and secure surface, ensuring that the cocoon would remain undisturbed during its journey. It was an object of rare beauty, a testament to the intricate design of nature itself.

Amanda took a moment to study the cocoon, admiring its intricate patterns and the delicate shades of color that adorned its surface. It was a work of art crafted by the butterfly over the course of its metamorphosis, a masterpiece of nature's design.

As she prepared to store the cocoon safely for further study, Amanda couldn't help but feel a deep sense of reverence. In this moment, she was not just a mage or an artificer; she was a guardian of nature's wonders, entrusted with the care of a rare and precious gift.

Turning to her team she offered them a smile and then announced loudly so as to catch one of the proctor's attention "That's all the tasks complete. Well done everyone!"

Appraisal D on Amanda

Eris watched the groups from afar as she didn't want to intervene with their processes. She took particular note of Amanda who seemed to be the group's brains and main pivot point. Leaning forward a bit as she rested her weight against her quarterstaff. While it's encouraged to work together, there is a point that you need someone too much, especially as an adventurer that could be dangerous. She thought to herself, letting out a small sigh though she couldn't argue with the results. Closing her eyes she thought for a moment if she was just going to let it go and let them learn it another time or not.

Taking a few steps forward, brought her hand up to her mouth and cleared her throat.
"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. As an adventurer you must face many challenges alone. Seek comfort in the joys that companions bring you. But...But do not forget that there will be times when you must complete something alone. Enjoy the time you have with your fellow students but do not neglect your own strengths. You will not always have them and when you don't have them even in the darkest of times seek the light in the darkness," Eris concluded as she looked at each of the students and used Appraisal D on Amanda.

The End...of the entrance exam.
As the exam continued, the varied fortunes of the student groups illustrated the importance of caution, preparation, and teamwork.

Despite their initial confidence, the tieflings' reckless mistake left them overrun by the voracious Hell Flies. They would bear the horrific scars of this failure for some time.

The eccentric group of outcasts fared little better. In dismantling their puzzle box completely, they had irreparably damaged the priceless cocoon within. Luna insisted they could still communicate with its essence, but the practical objective had been lost.

The elf siblings managed to successfully aid the emergence of a Gem butterfly from their cocoon through their attunement to nature. However, their delicate handling damaged the precious silk, preventing them from harvesting it properly.

And the damaged box proved too great an obstacle for Godric's noble class group to overcome, despite Salazar's pleas to Thomas. In the end, no cocoon emerged from their fractured container at all.

Of all the students, Amanda's team performed the best. Through care, skill, and teamwork they opened the puzzle box unharmed, correctly diagnosed an infested cocoon, purified it, and extracted the intact silk after the butterfly emerged.

When Braxus surveyed their unblemished work, even his stony demeanor was impressed. "Not horrible at all," he rumbled. "You may lack experience, but you've kept level heads under pressure and worked together. That will serve you well if you aim to become heroes."

Likewise, Sir Braxus approached Eris, "Check on the ones we want to keep on, send the others to the infirmary. Lead the chosen to the

For Amanda, Thomas, Echo and Noelle, surviving the harrowing events of the exam was another step forward in their journey. They had proven their worth to the academy, and to each other. Many trials still awaited, but together they had the potential for greatness.

---

The vaulted Feasting Hall of Champions had been transformed for the closing ceremony. Small circular tables dotted the grand space, lit by the flickering glow of candlelight. The heavy silence felt somber compared to the excitement of that morning.

Clearly, the day's trials had whittled the crowds down considerably. Only about a third of the newcomers remained of the hundreds hopefuls who had arrived in the morning. Some nursed bandaged wounds, while others simply looked drained from the ordeals faced.

At the head table, Headmaster Iando Starseeker rose solemnly. His silver hair shone in the candlelight as he delivered a short welcome speech to those remaining.

"You have all shown courage and persistence today," he intoned. "The path of the hero is never easy. Take pride that you have passed the first of many tests."

The headmaster went on to describe dormitories available on campus, arrangements at local inns, and other mundane details for new students. But his words felt distant. The heavy weight of the day's events still hung over the hall. Indeed, he spent an inordinate amount of time talking about the incredible lore contained in the Museum of Lore and Legends and invited the chosen to spend the afternoon walking through to see what great things laid ahead.

Whispered conversations confirmed that the battle with the demon Volthor had been an unusual trial, even by this academy's standards. Some counted themselves lucky to have arrived after that incident.

Finally, meal platters appeared on the tables via enchantment. But the new students picked at their food, too weary to have much appetite. The adrenaline had faded, leaving them numb and thoughtful.

Tomorrow their classes and training would begin in earnest. But tonight, rest and reflection were needed to process everything they had endured thus far. The road ahead promised more challenges...yet for those remaining, the first steps had been conquered.

Thomas, Noelle, and Echo were free to celebrate that night and had accomplished their goals of sticking together and learning more about their skills. They were now official students of the Academy! Of course, they'd have to pay for tuition either their assets they had or by taking on the odd F-grade tasks the Academy regularly put out.

Likewise, Eris had done well and would always be welcomed to teach classes or help proctor other trials the students might face.

---

For others, the wealthy, connected, and/or profoundly skilled, it would be quite different. As the subdued gathering wound down, Headmaster Iando discreetly approached ten select students, including Amanda and Salazar. In hushed tones, he extended them a special invitation.

"You have all exhibited extraordinary gifts today," Iando told the surprised youths. "I believe you possess the skills to immediately undertake the final exams and trials usually reserved for third-years. Pass these, and you shall graduate the academy this very week."

Excited murmurs rippled through the chosen few. Graduating in mere days was an almost unheard of feat. But Iando saw untapped potential in these promising pupils. With the right nudges, they could unlock it swiftly.

"Make your choice before tomorrow and inform the exam proctors," Iando instructed. "Be ready to be tested as never before." With those ominous words hanging in the air, the Headmaster swept away in a swirl of embroidered robes.

The candidates he had selected buzzed with nervous speculation. Even Salazar seemed caught off guard by the sudden opportunity. Those like Amanda realized their talents had marked them for greatness...whether they felt ready or not.

As the night deepened, the chosen few were left to ponder if they dared seize this accelerated path to glory. The final trials awaited them in the hallowed Museum of Lore and Legends, a place that might become their new home should they succeed...

The next day, several of them took up Iando. For Amanda, given her skills and titles, the final exams were easily accomplished and resolved. She had accomplished what she'd set out for. Hopefully the Duke would be happy with his investment.

Amanda sat in the tranquil courtyard of the academy, the soft murmur of the breeze rustling through the trees providing a soothing backdrop to her thoughts. She held her newly acquired certificates in her hands, the culmination of years of dedication and hard work. Her journey from a humble farmstead in Kirkwall to the prestigious academy was a testament to her determination and unwavering pursuit of knowledge.

As she gazed at the certificates, memories of late-night study sessions, challenges, and her previous life flooded her mind. She had overcome every obstacle in her path, proving her mettle as a scholar, craftswoman, and advisor. But now, with graduation upon her, Amanda found herself at a crossroads, contemplating the road ahead.

Her thoughts turned to Aria, her beloved partner, and confidante. Her parents, brother, friends, and the citizens of Caelia.

With a sense of purpose burning within her, Amanda looked beyond the courtyard, her gaze fixed on the horizon. She knew that her journey was far from over. The certificates in her hands were not the culmination of her efforts but rather a stepping stone to greater heights. Amanda aspired to become a beacon of knowledge, a guiding force in the realms, and a champion for peace and prosperity.

Determination welled up inside her as she made a silent vow. She would not rest on her laurels; instead, she would push herself harder than ever before. Her ambition was not solely for her own glory but for the betterment of Ryke, for the benefit of all its inhabitants.

As she set her sights on her future, a remarkable transformation began. Her body seemed to respond to the intensity of her ambition, undergoing a subtle metamorphosis. It was as if the very essence of her being was evolving, aligning with her newfound purpose.

Physical changes manifested as her aura pulsed with newfound power. Her eyes, once filled with determination, now sparkled with a luminous intensity, radiating wisdom and confidence. The energy within her surged, and she felt a profound connection to the mystical forces of the world.

Amanda knew that this transformation was not just a reflection of her ambition; it was a manifestation of her potential. She had become a vessel for knowledge, a conduit for change, and a guardian of Ryke's future.

With her certificates in hand and her heart ablaze with purpose, Amanda stood up from her spot in the courtyard. Her steps were filled with purpose as she walked toward her future, ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that awaited her.

For the sake of her loved ones, for the betterment of Ryke, and for the pursuit of peace and prosperity, Amanda was determined to become the greatest aid in all the realms. Her journey had only just begun, and she was prepared to face it with unwavering resolve and boundless determination.

Following behind her Mistress, Gloria smiled to herself. It seemed she was to have her work cut out for her.

Thomas heaves a sigh of relief. The tests were over, at least the entrance exam tests. He's sure there'll be more tests as the school progresses, so he'll have to hit the books hard and fast to keep up his momentum he gained coming into the academy. He feels glad for the students able to graduate early, and it appears Amanda is one of those people. The group was able to successfully coax out the butterfly largely with her help. Thomas feels like he didn't do too much himself other than pass the fourth challenge, which he made look easy with his temporal healing skill but was quite a handful. The academy ushered the students who passed to the Feasting Hall of champions, where tables were set up and assortments of food. Thomas was quite sapped of his strength for the day, merely picking at his plate, not really eating much. He scanned the room for Echo but didn't see her, so he pushed it out of his mind for the moment and went to find a few people. First, he located Salazar at a table across the room. He approaches the table meekly, his eyes downcast at first. "Good... good evening!" He was off to an awkward start, but wouldn't let that deter him. "I don't know what you meant when you said I was your rival earlier. This is my first time attending any sort of school because my parents taught me all the other basic things to get by until now. I tried my best to rewind time for your box, I really did. But its magic is so incredibly intricate, it was impossible for my current level of abilities..." It might make for an interesting challenge once I become a lot stronger and more knowledgeable about time magic. At that point, I will return here and see if I can't get in on a teaching gig like Eris has... Thomas became quite lost in thought. He wouldn't even notice if anyone were to walk up to him or walk away. At some point, however, he snaps out of his reverie and looks around, visibly confused. "Huh..." he shrugs it off and speaks final farewells to anyone gathered around him. There's another group he wants to check in on, but something is probing at his mind to take care of first.

This time around, Thomas takes his time and a more scrutinizing search for Echo. He categorizes the room in his head into sections. Once he's finished scouring all the tables for any sign of Echo without seeing her, he starts to wander around the school. Along the way, he peers into empty classrooms and... some not so empty classrooms where couples are doing couples things without obvious approval. He quickly moves on from those classrooms, searching the rest and not seeing a single sign of her anywhere. No... we were going to go to the cafe together. And do many more things... I had a whole big list... Thomas believes he has searched everywhere, not seeing any sign of Echo. She left sometime between the end of the last trial and walking to the Feasting Hall. He's quite sure he's alone, so he slumps down against a wall, burying his face in his hands. Oh, how terribly it hurt to know that someone deeply cared about was gone without a second thought. He had wanted to find out a way to get her voice back but now that will never happen... Some time passes, and Thomas stops wallowing on the floor at long last. After all, there's still people he needs to find. He stands up and returns to the food area. Thanks to his scrutinizing search of all the tables, he knows exactly where the tieflings are sitting. Or maybe they're all standing, talking to others. If the tieflings are separated he tries his best to get them all together. If they're not spread out he joins the group, giving apologetic eyes for interrupting. "Excuse me, but I need to speak to all of you." Once he's certain he has their attention, he bows deeply. "I AM SORRY!" He blurts out. "I wanted to reverse time to stop the hell flies from dealing more damage but... I wasn't strong enough. I tried my very best and I can only hope you all will forgive me for being unable to do anything else!" He remains bowing until he hears from one of the tieflings.

ISEKAI HELL GRADE

Aftermath

The Celestine Academy in the City of Azuran has seen quite the group of new students this year, the actions of the first year students haven't gone unnoticed by the staff. While some of them may have looked like they were going to be kicked out from the exams many of hte students passed. Though they were soon to realize they were now under more eyes than before thanks to their performance. Professors and some of the older students even know their names! However there are rumors that the Academy sweeps many things under the rug though none of these rumors can be confirmed at this time.
