The young man wasn't one for balls, but he was told that anyone who was anyone might be of attendance. Sadly, that's what he needed. To meet the right people to help him achieve his goals. He cared little for the costume he had to don and left it to the judgment of the tailor he hired. Looking back, the young man had wished to have overseen the making of his attire as it felt a bit too much for his taste. However, there was nothing he could do now. It was a lesson he learned for some other time.
For most of the night, the young man kept to himself as he found mingling with others a much more difficult task than he had imagined. Standing alone in a corner or leaning against a wall or pillar, he simply watched the other guests enjoy the night festivities. This was certainly not his type of crowd. The chattering slowly died down for a moment as they were treated to a musical display of ice and what the young man assumed to be magic. It made several of the guests gather in one spot, making it easier to discern who he had to approach. Or so he thought.
Not familiar with the specifics of small talk and chitchat, the young man failed to get near anyone as most started to resume whatever conversation they were previously in. But then, a hooded figure suddenly spoke out loud and caught the young man's attention. There wasn't anyone beside him, so he might have been talking to himself. This was probably the opportunity he had been looking for all throughout the night. It would have been a shame if he wasted it.
Though somewhat intimidating in appearance, the young man decided to approach the hooded figure. "Sorry for eavesdropping, but it sounds like you weren't too excited to come here." In a way, the young man was in the same boat. He was at the ball more out of perceived necessity than actual want or interest. "If you don't mind me asking, what brings someone like you to an event like this?" Hopefully, the young man's decision to strike a conversation would lead to something fruitful.
