Fandom Into the fire (1x1 MzHyde/Gallifrog)

John watched the fighters with intense scrutiny. He was damn impressed at their speed, skills and agility. Their movements were smooth and instinctive. Clearly Jay was a natural, her fluidity suggested years and years of training. To him it seemed more than likely she had taught Elliott some his skills. None of the blows actually landed on each other prompting John to ask.

"They're pulling their blows aren't they?" "You're sharp, just like El says. Yes.... and no." Saoirse responded "think of this as more of a kata. This is a series of moves testing the opponents speed, reflexes and weaknesses. They always do this first, mainly to show off, before the they speed up for the real fight."

Well if this was them warming up, the main fight was going to be spectacular John thought. Jay dodged Elliott' headblow by backflipping right over his head, their sticls clashing as she was in midair. She landed in a roll behind him

Kay looked at them both as they explained they were only warming up and sort of holding back. She wasn't sure if that made her less nervous or more so.

She just nodded and looked back at the two of them training. Her grip loosened slightly on John's arm. It wasn't much mind but it was noticable. She must have come across as such a wimp to everyone she thought. She hopes she was wrong in her thinking but she doubted it.

She kept repeating to herself in her mind that it's just a big old spectacle and no need to worry, but it didn't exactly do much.

John noticed that Kay's grip had released slightly. He wasn't sure why she was so worked up, but the shadows cast obscured her hands from the view of the rest of them. A.J. and Scott had one arm each wrapped around the other. Toby was perched on the back of the couch (which had been dragged from the general room) leaning forwwards with interest. Kane's head was resting on his propped up knee, while Saoirse was sitting on one foot.

The two fighters suddenly stopped, drew their sticks towards themselves and took two steps backwards perfectly in sync. They locked eyes and slowly began to circle each other, their bare feet moving soundlessly on the worn mats. There was something predatorial in their movements. John found that he was holding his breath waiting for the first strike. The only sound was the humming of the air system.

Kay watched on whilst calming herself down. She felt ridiculous finding this giving her flash backs to the attack on her.

She watched as Elliott and Jay were in perfect sync when they stopped before circling each other. The silence was deafening for Kay. She too, waited for the strike wondering who would make it. The wait was almost crippling to her and she wondered how on earth these people found such excitement and entertainment out of this kind of thing.

Training she understood, and earlier in the day she was so up for seeing Elliott in action, but now she was here she wasn't so sure.

It was Jay who struck first, her stick a blur shooting towards Elliott's chest as she pivoted forwards. Elliott managed to dodge it by a hair, sending his own return strike at her legs. She evaded that and swung the staff in a circular motion, raining down blows for all angles at the black haired male. There was something both terifying and awe inspiring about her speed.

Elliott had no choice but to try and side step out. But it wasn't easy with the barage of staff blows. In the end his only option was to jump backwards flip, using the staff like a pole vaulting pole. He then returned the blows, the two ducking and weaving and striking with furious fast paced speed. The sound of their sticks was like a crescendo drumroll bouncing off the walls

Kay couldn't peel her eyes away from the two of them. The speed was indeed terrifying to her. She was equally impressed by Elliott's evading skills and in a way way, pride washed over her when watching him.

She kept watching despite at several times, she flinched because it was so close she was convinced a hit would come any second. Kay kept her hold on John the entire time still. At one almost hit, she needed a break. "I'll be right back, save my seat" she said to John, standing up and walking to the back so she couldn't see it as much.

She took in deep breaths slow and steady, and leaned against the wall.

It was shortly after Kay left the room that Elliott was hit, the blow sent him flying backwards, but it also revealed the tell tale after glow of the mage armour that both Elliott and Jay had had cast on themselves. They weren't stupid enough to fight unarmoured, a staff could break bones when misused, and with their speed, neither wanted to risk it.

"You son of a bitch Elliott" John groaned very loudly. Loud enough for everybody including Elliott to hear. Elliott smirked, as did Jay. He had been genuinely fearful for his adoptive kids safety. It wasn't visible in his face, but Kay would no doubt have felt how tense the muscles in his arms and shoulders were. He slumped back in the seat, relieved. He noticed the expressions on the faces of the assembled others. "what?" He asked defensively "he's my stupid kid"

Elliott scrambled to his feet and launched himself at Jay with a flurry of blows. Noticing Kay leave, John sighed, he should probably go after her. He was torn between making sure she was ok and watching his kid.

Kay couldn't watch anymore. She thought she could handle it, and just be normal so soon after but she oh so wrong. She heard the call out by John and thought she should head back, but there were enough people between her and John that panic kicked in.

Realisation hit her like a ton of bricks that she was alone and last time she separated from John she was kidnapped. She tried to steady her breathing but she couldn't. Her chest got so tight, she thought she was going to die but it was a panic attack. She pressed herself against the back wall. "Never should have left Kay....." She gasped out to herself. She just wanted a break from watching and to feel a tiny bit of air that was at the back. She now fully regretted that decision.

Her vision was getting light spots. "No no no...." She panicked more

Scott seemed to just know that something was wrong, he couldn't explain it, he just knew it. He gestured at John to go "go. Elliott'll be fine, but I'm not so sure about her." His voice was like a butterfly knife, softly spoken, elegant, but completly deadly.

John nodded and stood up. "if they kill each other, that's on you guys" He walked out of the room not quite sure where exactly Kay had gone. He heard the sound of her loosing it. oh geez, what have you got yourself into johnny boy? he thought interanally. His eyes adjusted to the light quickly and he made his way over to her, and hesitantly put an arm around her.

(My last post)

Kay hadn't even noticed John appear until she felt an arm around her. She flinched but looking up she saw John. She buried herself into him, trying so hard to not faint and desperately trying to regulate her breathing again.

She focused on his heart beat to try and match it to her breathing. "don't ...let me..pass out..." She breathed, holding back tears from the panic rather than from being emotional. She was hating being seen like this. She hated the damsel in distress trope, and yet here she was falling into that trap.

John would rather have faced another horde of carrion crows (without any antimatter nearby) than have to deal with somebody in clear emotional distress. But he didn't get a choice in the matter, so he might as well try and be of some sort of use. Don't let her pass out? Now that was something he could deal with. That was a situation he was prepared for.

She needed something to shock her out of her state of clear emotional distress. And John had just the thing. Reaching into one pocket he pulled out a black syringe (kind of like an epi-pen). There was a bat brand on it. It contained adrenaline, and would definitly shock Kay into not fainting. He pressed down the stopper, realesaing the adrenaline into her bloodstream.

Kay wondered the hell he was about to inject her with but before she could protest, she got a large shot of the adrenaline and she instantly knew what his thinking was.

"Fuck!" She exclaimed out of the shock. Instantly her eyes refocused and her heartbeat sped up before slowing down back to a normal speed. "Thanks..." She told him. "You just randomly carry adrenaline in your pocket?" She asked him. The after effects made her a little shaky but it was slowly subsiding.

"Kind of yeah." He shrugged as if it was the most normal thing in the world. Unconsciously he twirled the now empty cannister around his fingers. "I learned that trick from a.......well not a friend" he thought for a minute, trying to come up with a way to say 'Batman' without saying Batman. It was surprisngly hard.

"A guy who spends most of his time hating my existance and trying to piss me off. He's annoying as hell, but every once in a while he comes up with a nugget of wisdom." Batman was the best of a bad lot in john's opinion.

Kay nodded. "Well...thanks. I'm glad you do... Realised the kidnapping has affected me more than I thought" she admitted. This whole time she hadn't let go of him. She learned to not press for more details if John didn't initially give them to her. It was how he was and she had to accept that.

"I went to head back to you and being alone and the crowd just freaked me out" she explained. "I'm sorry you had to come to me, I know you're not exactly... How do I put it? The type to run to a girl's troubles" she tried to word it without offending him, but she felt she failed miserably.

John laughed at her description, it was accurate, far more accurate than it had any right to be. "you got that much right, give me a horde of demons any day." He wasn't at all offended, more of amused that he didn't have to pretend actually knew what he was doing.

His tone got more serious "the whole kidnapping thing? Word of warning. You're not ever going to forget it, but it will get easier....in time."

She sighed with relief when he laughed at her description. She was so glad he wasn't offended. She looked up at him when he became serious again and she just nodded.

"Figured as much..." She replied. She ran a hand through her hair sighing. "I guess what doesn't kill me makes me stronger or some bullshit" she smirked. "And considering I can't die..." She began saying trailing off. "But on a serious note, I'm glad you came to find me either way. Shows you're not 100% an asshole" she added, playfully hitting his arm.

"Something like that." He replied. For John it was whatever didn't kill him either a) got killed by him or b) made him more determined than ever to get even. And John took vengeance seriously.

"No I'm more of 30% exhaustion, 50% broody angst 10% sarcasm and 20% don't care"

Kay laughed, but she knew he was serious. It was one of those 'its funny because it's true' scenarios for her. She would retort with something about herself but she didn't know what with that wouldn't make things stupidly awkward. "I'm 50% sass and I have no idea what else" she honestly said.

Truth was, she probably would have replied with something like '40% into fucked up guys like yourself and 10% messed up myself' but she knew better than to say that. Even if fibre in her being just wanted to slam him against the wall in that very moment.

"Fair enough. So are you going to stay and stare at this corridor for the forseable future or what?" He asked. He did want to get back to see how Elliott was doing against Jay, who was an extremly impressive opponent. He'd have to weasel her story out of somebody. She couldn't have become as good as she was without some kind of formal training.

She shook her head. "No...let's go back" she said. She felt she had taken him away from Elliott for too long. She didn't fully want to watch but she knew watching was the better of the two unappealing options.

"Just accept it Kay...you'll never have the bottle to show him and he'll never gain any affection of any kind towards to you" she thought to herself, despite feeling like she'd be happy just being used as a one night stand or some crap. She shook her thoughts out of her head. She was here to support Elliott, not work herself up

"You sure?" John asked, not one hundred percent certain that she actually meant it. Plus he was suspicious by nature, and it was his default to doubt people. Plus she'd been through a lot these past few days, so he might as well try and act like he was a normal person for once in his life. Not the guy who killed most of his family and friends through his use and zbuse of magic.

She didn't 100% mean it by any means, but she couldn't be selfish and tear him away from his son. She wasn't that person. "I'm sure" she said, even she could tell she wasn't fooling anyone. "I'm not gonna pull you away from your kid John." She then told him truthfully.

He was seriously making it difficult for her not to kiss him right then and there. The last thing she wanted was to make things awkward between them aswell.

(I'm gonna be on at very strange times today, it's both my birthday and the annual band concert)

Even John could tell she didn't want to go back. But she did mean the bit about not pulling him away from Elliott. Which put him in an awkward position. "he's wearing mage armour, so he won't get hurt. Bruised pride maybe, but nothing close to the level of injuries you'd normally sustain in that kind of combat. No wonder they are so willing to show off that much. I wouldn't be surprised if they started doing parkour while fighting. It's not just me who thinks she trained him? Is it?" yes, he was rambling slightly, but so what? He could do that if he wanted to

(happy birthday! And good luck for the concert tonight!)

Kay looked up at him when he explained about Elliott taking all the precautions possible to be okay. That actually made her just that bit happier. She smiled slightly when he kept rambling on, she hadn't seen John like this before and it endeared her to him even more.

She knew she should just answer his question. Her answer would have been how no, he wasn't the only one to think that. From what she stayed to watch, it was quite clear Jay had some hand in training Elliott at least.

Then she couldn't take it anymore. She grabbed either side of his face pulling him down to her, as she went up onto tip toes and just kissed him. The kiss was strong and meaningful. She held it there for a few moments before pulling away. She just stared at him, not sure if she wanted to apologise for her brash action or not.

(Thanks! And thanks! I'm gonna need it)

Before he could say anything, Kay grabbed him and kissed him. It was completly out of the blue, so his first emotion was shock. That however wore off pretty fast. His next thought was oh shit it's happening again. It was predictable circle, he saves somebody, lets them get too close, one or both develop feelings and then the final stagd, the one he had been hoping would be avoided. Death.

The one thing that he could never stop, and never cheat- Death. Sure he'd delayed it, and once bent the princes of hell to his will, making them resurrect him. But the death of others, he couldn't stop that. In fact he caused it. Almost everybody he ever met died or worse. And now it was happening again.

And that was visible on his face, completely overtaking everything else. The look of somebody who knew their life was completly and utterly fucked.
