Interest Check: Legend of the Five Rings
I've always houseruled that the arrow price/time is for a dozen, and I would strongly encourage our GM to do the same. His choice though
I approve wholeheartedly of this notion. Particularly if arrows are not easily recovered (which given the taboo on touching dead people, I guess is the case).

It would also be sensible for a number of arrows be included when you get a bow by other means. On this note, it should be pointed out that graduates of the Tsuruchi Archer School receive a bow and 20 arrows.

Exactly, and the price per arrow seems ridiculous otherwise. I think it may have merely been an editing oversight, and honestly it's not a game breaking house rule.

Guess who realized he doesn't have time for the game anymore?

Sorry Griever and Unicorns, but I'm gonna bow out...man, and just when I got a solid concept of Iuchi Hayase down. Ah well.

Have fun everyone ^^

    Game of Twenty Questions:

    01. What Clan does your Character belong to?

    Mantis

    02. What family does your Character belong to?

    Tsuruchi

    03. Is your Character a Bushi, Shugenja, or Courtier?

    Bushi

    04. How would others describe your Character's appearance?

Young, attractive, muscular. He has beautiful hair and a charming smile, but it seems less refined than one would expect from a samurai.

    05. What is your Character's primary motivation?

To not get caught in his lie by being the best samurai he can, even if it won't be as good as a regular samurai

    06. Who is the person your Character trusts most in the World?

His father, the man who now calls him his son

    07. What is your Character's Greatest...

    07a. Strength?

    Dedication to his lie

    07b. Weakness?

Fear of giving away his secret

    08. What does your Character think of Bushido?

It is a great honor to be a samurai, but how do they manage to keep it up every day

    09. What is your Character's opinion of their Clan?

These guys are the greatest people he has ever met. They are rich, powerful, worldly, and have entire fleets of ships.

    10. Is your Character married?

Not yet. They have a couple of people lined up for me, but the negotiations are lagging behind. A few things need to be worked out, and my father hopes that I can improve my lot

    11. Does your Character have any prejudices?

Dragon Clan. Why do they live so far from the water?

    12. To whom does your Character owe the most loyalty?

Father. I have to since he turned me from some lowly fishing boy to a samurai.

    13. What are your Character's...

    13a. Favorite thing?

    Going fishing

    13b. Least favorite thing?

Drawing a sword against another person

    14. Does your Character have any recurring mannerisms?

    15. What about your Character's emotions?

They get really mixed up. He hasn't been a samurai his whole life, only half of it. It has been a big adjustment. 9 years a samurai, and I am expected to be as composed as those that grew up as it.

    16. How would your Character handle a subordinate's improper behavior?

A stern talking to and redefining of their role.

    17. How would your Character's parents describe him?

Dead. Oh, you mean... Yeah, he is a good kid that has demonstrated his abilities more recently.

    18. What is your Character's highest ambition?

Not get killed, earn the respect of his fellow samurai

    19. How religious is your Character?

He used to be very religious, but that has diminished since he became a samurai

    20. How will your Character die?

He will drown in a storm when he gets swept from the ship he is sailing

Two possible routes to take this based off of the interest I've seen so far.

Code of Honor

An adaptation of the Otokodate story. Mechanically, we would have everyone play a ronin for this one.

You are ronin. Your family has turned their backs on you, and you believe yourself to be better without. Married not to a clan, you and your fellows instead roam the lands looking for injustice and corruption wherever it may rear its ugly head. And your latest bout of roving has brought you to a small mountain village beset by bandits lording their strength over the weak villagers. Their pleas have fallen on deaf ears...until now.

Clothed in Emerald

An adaptation of the Magistrates story. Mechanically, this would allow many backgrounds to gather, but would have an inclination towards accepting proper samurai (see "not ronin").

Where the Emperor points, the arms of the Emerald Champion move. You and your fellows are those arms. As Emerald Magistrates, you have been tasked with collecting Imperial taxes from the town of Yumekoto, an idyllic destination nestled in a fertile valley. Never has the town been a source for problems or trouble, which makes this string of delinquency all the more worrisome...

I think I am getting some of the hang of the basics at this point. I could go for either. Ronin would be more problematic in some ways, but you never know.

See, I'd have to make entirely different characters for the Ronin game... butttt... I'd like them too. Daigotsu Bushi ahoy!

Whilst Code of Honor works best for me considering my ronin-ness, my ronin is willing to accept orders from magistrates should it come to the other one. But if it is strictly no ronin, no exceptions, I can change, :D

My character would much prefer the emerald magistrates, but i think the former might be more fun.

So. I think I may have found a hiccup in your ronin game plans. You said you wanted to stick to the core rules. But ronin abilities only go to tier 1 in the core book. You would need the expansions to get any higher tiered abilities for an all ronin game.

The benefit of having everyone as ronin would be tilted as you would need to reference multiple books to keep track of everything.

Just my two cents.

The general consensus so far seems to be towards Code of Honor (unless I've completely misread your intentions, if so then please correct me).

I'll go ahead and get the submission ready. Once again, I'll only be accepting 3-5 Applications for the game.

This is entirely true...granted, a background of being on a pilgrimage could be used when creating a Clan Ronin. Couple that with a decision that given you're on a respected pilgrimage, you would be able to progress past Rank 1.

Or, we could go with your suggestion and include other source material for the sake of being able to advance in the Ronin Paths. What do you all think?

How much of a problem depends entirely on how you want the campaign to develop after the initial adventure. If the characters within a relatively short time get the opportunity to rejoin the clans with honor, or at least receive training at their dojos, you might not need those extra supplements.
90% of further ronin ranks is in Enemies of the Empire, a good book I strongly suggest for the GM
I'll try to pick it up when I get home from work. Thank you.
A lot of us have submitted characters, how are you going to decide who's in or not?
The selection process will be a pick of characters submitted to the game (once I finish the application, mind you) numbering between 3 to 5 players. Characters will be submitted for a period of 2 weeks after which choices will be made.

Experience or inexperience will not be put into account. How early you had a concrete character idea will also not be considered. All I will be looking at will be your character sheet's mechanics, the character itself, and your willingness to commit to a fairly regular posting cycle.

I'd like to be as fair as possible and let everyone have an equal chance at enjoying themselves :)

If you're judging based on mechanics, character quality and posting commitment, you're not giving everyone an equal chance. You're favoring the good players. Jus' sayin' :P

Also I would predict very little new activity in the second week, and indeed towards the end of the first, but if you're partly taking the time to familiarize yourself with the system, setting and adventure, that is of course fully understandable :)

Should we consider posting multiple characters or is it one character per player.

I can start properly doing up a character (sheet + background + stuff) once I know exactly what you need from us, besides the sheet and a backstory.

I have all but two books of the current edition so if you're wondering which are a good buy or not or what has specifics, ask away :)
