I haven't read them in forever, but I don't think so? The books are SUPER different from the movies.
Essentially, there's a war between Vikings and dragons (also dragons can talk and hiccup speaks dragon and toothless is essentially a terrible terror) and at the end of it, the leader of the dragon army makes a truce and the rebellious dragons go into hiding until "humans can be trusted to live in peace with dragons." Theres also mention of a deadly plague. But nothing is ever actually specified, and many of the dragons stick around with the viking so. Who knows for sure.
I always kind of liked that ending though because it implies that, even today in our perfectly average world, dragons are hiding away somewhere and one day may return. Which is a fun and wondrous implication

Personally I think that they will find the rest of the nightfuries hidden in some sort of cave system/underground utopia (and find it due to the female nightfury, because only her and Toothless can't revive the rest of the species). Toothless is extremely agile, active at night, and in the show I believe he possessed echo location; all of which would lend well for a species that lived in dark enclosed spaces.

My worry isn't so much his death, but whatever causes the issue this time around will necessitate the dragons sacrificing themselves or being sent/trapped away for the foreseeable future (such as within that hidden location.....actually I wouldn't be surprised if Hiccup/maybe even all of the original riders, got stuck with them and was assumed lost forever). We'll probably end up with a bittersweet ending or a downer ending with a hope spot.

I agree theres like, an underground system of caves. I think tho that the white night fury is from a group of albino furies. They're likely the only ones left because the non-albino furies were hunted to near extinction

Wait there's a white one?

*Nevermind lol, I'll wait till the film comes out. I'd rather know less and be surprised.
