I haven't read them in forever,but I don't think so? The books are SUPER different from the movies.
Essentially, there's a war between Vikings and dragons (also dragons can talk and hiccup speaks dragon and toothless is essentially a terrible terror) and at the end of it, the leader of the dragon army makes a truce and the rebellious dragons go into hiding until "humans can be trusted to live in peace with dragons." Theres also mention of a deadly plague. But nothing is ever actually specified, and many of the dragons stick around with the viking so. Who knows for sure.
I always kind of liked that ending though because it implies that, even today in our perfectly average world, dragons are hiding away somewhere and one day may return. Which is a fun and wondrous implication
