Fantasy Howl's Flying Castle - OOC

Well.... okay so this guy is based in the world I created for the stories I've been writing and basically, he was a doctor in life. Like world renowned physician and he traveled all over healing people and stuff. So he is away on what he expects to be his last trip away from his family and he is treating someone of the royal family and saves their life, he then gets a letter telling him that his wife and son are sick. So of course he races home right away but by the time he gets there, its too late and his family has died. So he spends some time in misery despite the fact that he was given the title of count because of his work with the royals and just the fact that he is so well known but he can't share it with the ones that he was doing it for so that he wouldn't have to travel anymore and eventually he kills himself.
 
But, in this universe there is a thing called the abyss, basically it's this vast expanse of darkness that covers the whole lower half of the world and anyone who actually manages to survive when they enter it, lose their mind at least a little. Like there was a man that went in and came back out then spent the rest of his life building a wall to encircle the darkness and keep it walled off from the rest of the world. The abyss is a physical part between life and death and anything that dies or has a half life goes there. There is a whole council of minor dieties that rule in the abyss and they basically keep souls coming and going to where they are supposed to be. They also are the keepers of granting returns to the mortal world in order to maintain balance. So they see the promise of the doctor and know he has a good heart and think that it's a waste to let him move on. So they want to grant him eternal life in the form of a vampire. Of course he doesn't want to harm others, that goes against who he was in life so the idea of drinking blood is out of the question, so they present him with another option. He can sustain his life force by drawing sickness and sad memories from the people he treats and that will maintain his eternal life. He still has to eat because that sustains his physical form. He is at his weakest right after he feeds because he physically takes on whatever was ailing his patients when he treated them, but his powers are at their strongest at the same time. It's his sort of self punishment for not being there when his family needed him the most, but at the same time he is glad that he can still help other families even better than he could before.

Epic backstory. Very epic and tragic. No wonder you didn't want to change it.
