I think it's thing that Hogward makes every new student do. (There's also theory that house parting is under fidelius charm that was put on hat, when it get destroyed, every one who had been parted with hat turned to secret keeper. Reason how Harry could tell about hat at end of film and book)

By to way Japan's magical education is to 17 years too, from 11 it's board school (to 7-10 years old it's day school) so there's probably stuff at first year that she doesn't know. (and some easy stuff she knows already) only she hasn't gone school completely at 10 years old, as her parents where killed then.
