The Clever Paradox
It’s not a car ride without music. Ryan thought to himself as he pressed the radio on. He briefly glanced at the car’s rearview mirror noting that the familiar BMW was following them. Fast rides and great cars were part of Ryan’s ultimate interests. The speed limit was usually optional for him. However with a bunch of people in his car and Nathan’s Beamer trailing them, he had to stick to the legal standards . . . or at most five miles per hour above it.
Above the music Finn’s voice could be heard complimenting the Range Rover they were in. “Thanks got it last year,” Ryan replied keeping both of his eyes on the road. It truly seemed to be something a bit out of a middle class twenty-one year old’s financial league. As an intern over the previous school year, Ryan managed to score a contract with the Jaguar auto company. His clever mind was able to patch a vital hole that some computer engineers and Information Technology employees left hanging. How “vital” was it? It caused a private credit breach in their systems. As a form of payment, Ryan chose a new car over the guarantee of having a future with Jaguar. Why you may ask? Chase, Ryan’s older brother, tried to persuade him to join the military. The option at the time seemed very tempting to the lad. Even in the car Ryan debated about whether he should join the military or not. He wasn’t interested in the Army which his brother was in; however, the Air Force was pretty appealing to him.
What seemed to be a foreign line coming from the song turned out to be Fred pulling out an Italian phrase about Ryan’s car. “Grazie, my bro,” Ryan responded knowing only the mere basics of the language. Fred had a follow up question though that Ryan wasn’t even sure of. “I don’t know. We kinda just drifted apart,” He shrugged making a left turn onto a new street. It was true, after high school everyone went on to do his or her own thing. The occurrence didn’t surprise Ryan since it only seemed natural due to the group’s long distance relations.
Ryan’s mind began to linger in the seemingly last few moments of their high school group memories. The thoughts ended once he heard Mallory’s teasing tone and swiftly looked at the Power Ranger she held next to his face, “Yes.” He was still kind of in a daze after his mind traveled back in time. Fortunately, Ryan did a double take and rapidly eyed the figure once again. Benji… He thought to himself before redeeming his true answer. “I mean no! It’s my younger brother’s . . . must’ve left it,” Ryan corrected before hearing one of his current favorite songs come on.
Ryan slightly increased the volume and glanced in his rear mirror checking if Nathan was following them still. Almost shyly he began to lip sync to the song Waving Through A Window by Ben Platt. The shyness of course faded away once it got to the chorus. “Waving through a window,” Ryan mouthed glancing at the serious Addiebear next to him. Broadway plays have been all the hype since Hamilton; however, Ryan was a theatre geek even before that production. Was lip syncing embarrassing? Maybe, but what did he care? It was fun.
