- Someone asked me today if I remembered how it all went down. As if it didn't happen just 16 months ago and anyone could forget.
I didn't. I remember when our homes and towns turned into graveyards. When planes fell out of the sky, trains stopped running, and the whole world went dark. I remember the screams, the chaos. How some of us lost their minds. Some others lost much more.
You know what I remember the most? The way it felt to hold you in my arms for the last time.
I'm sorry.
Just.
I miss you.
So. God. Damn. Much.
These people I now run with, they're not good people. But everybody else is either gone or about to die. And they look out for each other. They keep everyone fed and safe here. Sometimes you just have to trade your freedom and pride. The hardest was to trade my values but who am I to judge if what they do works, while everything else in this world falls apart.
Tomorrow we're going to another town. We have our scouts already among the people there. They won't stand a chance.
I'm sorry I'm no longer the man you married. He's long gone.
β
Were you looking for that one high quality zombie apocalypse story where you could experience the raw, gritty life of a survivor at the end of the world? With just the right blend of plot and sandbox?
We got you.
Welcome to this carefully designed depiction of desolated America with more dead than living walking the land. Yet it's the living that you really need to watch out for.
This roleplay tells a story of those who made it. Who lost everything that mattered only to find there's still something worth fighting for. Something to be a part of. People who need you.
But don't forget, the world is out to get you. Pick a side and brace, your loyalties will be tested. Your loved ones might die. Your enemies might thrive. Come and see how far you will go to protect what you're still fighting for.
β There are three kinds of people in this world.
Bad ones
Those you follow
And those you need to protect.
I don't know which one I am anymore. β
Would you like to join but you're not sure if this roleplay is for you? Or maybe you simply don't have the time or attention span for a long term commitment? Don't worry, we thought of a solution.
There are two casts, the main one with main characters that are expected and allowed to be the part of the story possibly until its very last chapter. And the supporting cast, with temporary or periodic characters that join the rp either for a limited time (dying, leaving, or getting lost prematurely) or are part of the story but appear only occasionally (when desired by the player or needed for the sake of the plot).
We're curious about your character and their place in the story so go ahead and pitch your concept to us!
Here you have two communities where you could place them. If you're out of ideas and need inspiration we prepared various roles (not gender locked) within them that you can choose from and tweak to your liking.
There are no purely good or bad guys in this world but for the sake of this thread that's the distinction we used. Here:
THE GOOD GUYS
Synopsis:
Community of refugees in the Northview High School in a small town in South Indiana. It originated as a pocket of locals who barricaded the compound and later granted shelter to a larger group of an overrun community from Knox.
Northview HS is now home to over 40 people from all walks of life led by a young veteran-turned-teacher and a few-person Council supporting him. Their day-to-day is filled with hard labor to keep the campus safe and in a working order, as well as regular scavenging trips. Each time further and further from the safety of the Northview High walls as the supplies become scarce in the area.
Character Ideas:
β’ Council Member - someone who is respected by the group and represents the views of some of the people. Maybe they were a politician or an activist back in the day, or maybe someone completely different like aβ¦babysitter? Surprise us.
β’ Ex Leadership - someone who was in charge of the fallen community of Knox. Who misses the old order and doesn't wish the new leader of Northview well. Will they become a problem?
β’ Old Timer - an elderly person with traditional values and maybe a little obsolete world views. Perhaps someone who has useful skills like gardening or keeping farm animals. Or knitting. Would they become the group's parental figure or the grumpy old person?
β’ Black Sheep Turned Hero - maybe this person was part of a street gang back in the day, dealing drugs or worse. But they proved their value and they're appreciated as one of the useful community members, ready to do whatever it takes to protect their new brothers and sisters.
β’ Spiritual Leader or Fortune Teller - maybe they were part of a cult, or a newly self proclaimed prophet? Or maybe they claim that they can still see human aura around undead, or even communicate with them... Whoever they are, they might either help people cope with the new reality or make them worse with their outlandish ideas.
THE BAD GUYS
Synopsis:
Lincoln State Correctional Center in Ohio, now simply called "Lincoln" by the residents who call themselves The Samaritans. They are a well-organized, ruthless group that thrives on "hostile takeovers" of smaller communities they encounter.
Their naturally fortified base might be a safe haven for some but it's hell for others. Prison origins and pack mentality - it's a harsh reality where a bunch of top dogs and their "dictator" are in charge of the majority. Majority of the hard working people, some of them rescued survivors, others assimilated involuntarily.
There are rumours of some Lincoln residents preparing to rebel against the tyranny but nobody knows if they're true.
Character Ideas (general and specific):
* keep in mind that any Samaritan can be one of the secret rebels if that's the path you want to take
- Privileged ex-cons - special kind of members who are either high ranked Samaritans and ex-prison gang bosses, their loyal "soldiers", or the people who are close to them (family members, lovers). The high ranked Samaritans are usually supervising all crucial sectors like the food services, weaponry, pit fighting, other.
- Other Privileged - the minority of the Privileged are not ex convicts but extremely valuable assets, awarded for their merit with a comfortable and secure life, like eg an energy source genius, or some most high ranking enforcer, or scout etc.
- Enforcers/Sentry - even an organization with criminal origins has its police. Enforcers act as guards, pacifiers, or escorts for important people and shipments. Maybe they were correctional officers back in prison days? Or maybe they are power-high ex-prisoners playing cops. Or just normal people who have the right size, skill, or authority and notice an opportunity in such line of work.
- Scavengers/Scouts - these are the people who lead the scavenge runs, who go out into the world to find whatever they can to bring back to the base. They're valued among the community. They also have direct opportunity to steal or smuggle some goods to make personal profit without the knowledge of the men in charge. As long as they don't get caught.
- Priest - maybe he was working in Death Row, giving the last rites to those destined to die. Or maybe he worked in a local parish not that far from the prison. Did he let the life of sinners seduce him or did he remain the moral compass these lost men and women need if they ever want to seek redemption. (Optionally this could be a female Pastor)
- Prostitute - maybe they had such lifestyle before the outbreak. Or maybe they fell for a convict and after the outbreak they travelled all the way to meet their loved one only to learn the inmate was dead or a different person. Left on the mercy of Samaritans and not having any special talents other than their looks, they were coerced into becoming a prostitute
- Stripper - maybe they are a good friend of the bartender and together gather a lot of information, knowing a lot of Samaritan secrets.
- Cook/kitchen help - were they the old Correctional Food Service Officer preparing and serving meals? Or maybe they didn't work in prison at all. Maybe they weren't even a professional before the outbreak but they're resourceful and dedicated.
- A Real Bad Guy - BROWNIE POINTS IF YOU CHOOSE THIS ONE and can believably portray someone who is a sociopath, or a very ruthless, or out of sorts, or self-serving individual, or just extremely good at doing the dirty job for the leader.
THE STRAYS
If your idea for a lone survivor encountering one of the communities will match the plot we will consider incorporating them into it! But please keep in mind that the vast majority of the cast should already be part of one of the two communities.
Of course you'll be given an opportunity to talk OOC about your character's place and relationships within the community as well as write out flashbacks if you feel like it.
We're all about making this an immersive and fun experience for everyone!
β Don't do this alone. You will not make it alone.
But make sure you know what you're made of.
When your friends turn into foes.
When it's you who's the enemy. β
1. Use common sense and respect your roleplay partners by constructively communicating issues and alerting about absence. Follow the GMs' decisions and RPN rules.
That said plotting, In Character drama, feedback, and fresh ideas are most welcome!
2. This is a long-term, relaxed-paced roleplay with the minimum of two, proofed paragraphs per reply every week or so. We don't expect walls of purple prose but we value writing that shows some effort.
We also welcome the so-called "collab posts" where two or more characters carry out a dialogue or interaction that is later pieced together as a single post on the forum. Just ask and we're happy to show examples!
3. There's a lot of room for character development as well as the overarching plot split into Chapters that helps set direction and offers "checkpoints" on the way to the goal. So you can join us just for one Scene, one Chapter, or for the whole story! But please make sure to tell us which is your preference - if you're planning to join the main or the supporting cast.
4. Dark, mature, controversial themes like violence, abuse, strong language, substance use, sexual topics, some shades of bigotry, and other will be present within this story (RPN rules apply).
It's not for the faint of heart and even though personally we're all about love, diversity, and equality this is a realistic take on the prospective future, far from the ideal one we'd like.
Please be at least 18+ when expressing interest.
If in doubt, ask! We're happy to answer all of your questions and guide you through the joining process.
