Yume

Fireflies danced amidst the silvery glow of the moon, dotting the picturesque glade with twinkling lights. Above them was a beautiful canopy of deep green leaves, blowing in a gentle breeze and causing the shadows on the ground to wave about like water.

Water...

Yume whipped out her catalyst on instinct, swinging it around wildly at every little motion, as if every bit and piece was ready to strike. Her heart quickened, breathing speeding up faster and faster. Curse this place, and all like them! "Why here!?" she lamented, crying out loud to the sky. "Stupid nature!"

Eventually, she caught sight of another, who soon found a wand ominously pointed at him. Yume's face was stricken with panic, but she quickly realized what was going on and lowered the wand (though still held onto it). "A-are you...?" she trailed off. Obviously he was the date and not some murderous spirit. She knew that. "S-Sorry... uhm... I'm Yume." Probably not her worst first impression, but pretty close.

Luca stepped out from the shadows, his expression a blend of amusement and understanding as he took in Yume’s frantic energy. The enchanting glade, with its dancing fireflies and gentle breeze, felt almost surreal against the backdrop of her panic.

“Ah, Yume,” he said, his voice smooth and calming. “There’s no need for alarm. Nature can be both beautiful and bewildering, can’t it? But I assure you, the only spirits here tonight are the ones that bless us with their light.” He gestured toward the twinkling fireflies, a playful smile creeping onto his lips.

“Your instincts are admirable, though,” he continued, his tone light. “In a world as unpredictable as ours, it’s wise to be prepared for anything. But perhaps we can channel that energy into something more productive. After all, the night is young.” He’d put his hand out for a shake “I’m Luca, Luca Blazeheart.”

Well... that had been a real failure of a first impression, on Yume's part. She laughed to try and shrug it off, but it was forced and just made the situation even worse.

"Sorry, it's just the last few spirits I met in a place like this tried to bless me in half," she answered, trying her hand at being more honest about it. "I'm Yume." A silence followed, where a last name probably should've gone, and yet never came. Instead, she stepped forward and shook Luca's hand, visibly relaxing a bit in the process. "Nice to meet you, my fine gentlem— ohmygosh, is this sword yours!?"

Suddenly, Yume swung herself around to Luca's back, inspecting the fine runic blade with awe. It was rather awkward, considering she was hovering so close, he couldn't actually get a handle on it without the risk of cutting her. It was either that or let her continue fawning over it from behind.

"Wooow, it's beautiful! You can even see it glowing with magic, nice touch! You know, I'm something of an artificer myself~! I love runes!" After a few minutes, Yume finally returned Luca's personal space back to him, instead holding up her wrist. A fine bracelet glowed with similar-looking runes, only yellow, in her case. "I made this myself. It gives me a little boost when I need to dodge an attack. Wanna see~?"

Yume wandered back one more step and held her hands behind her back cutely. "Try to hit me~! I'll be fine, I promise~" she giggled, throwing Luca a pleading look. "And no holding back! That'd be less fun."

Luca chuckled softly, his eyes glinting with amusement as Yume tried to recover from her awkward introduction. “It’s alright, We all have our moments,” he said, his voice smooth and reassuring. The way she laughed, albeit forced, made him feel a mix of sympathy and intrigue. her honesty peaked his interest; it revealed a layer of vulnerability beneath her spirited exterior.

As she stepped forward to shake his hand, he felt her tension ease slightly, and he matched her smile with one of his own. “Nice to meet you too,” he replied, his tone warm as he sensed her curiosity bubbling beneath the surface. “And yes, the sword is mine,” he added.

When she swung around to inspect the blade, he couldn’t help but feel a rush of amusement at her enthusiasm. “Careful now,” he cautioned lightly, though his eyes sparkled with delight. “It’s not just for show; it has quite the edge.” He remained still, allowing her to marvel at the runes etched into the sword, the faint glow a testament to its magical properties.

When she finally stepped back, revealing her own glowing bracelet, his interest piqued. “You made that yourself?” he asked, genuine admiration in his voice. “That’s quite impressive!” He leaned in slightly, inspecting the intricate designs that mirrored the runes on his sword. “A boost for dodging attacks, you say? Clever. Runic magic can be quite useful in a pinch.”

Then came her playful challenge, and Luca’s lips curled into a smirk. “On three, then,” he said, his tone light but focused. “One… two… three!” He made a quick, feigned strike toward her, careful to keep it just out of reach, allowing her to demonstrate her dodging skills.“Let’s see what you’ve got!” he called, a challenge sparking in his voice.

Yume

Yume felt herself slowly relax in Luca's presence. He had a calming confidence about him that made her feel at ease, even in the midst of all the deadly nature. "I'd hope so. A sword without an edge is just a... paddle, I guess~" That'd almost sounded wise. Luckily, she saved face at the last moment.

"Mhm. Runes are a beautiful sort of magic: like enchanting with art!" She braced herself, throwing Luca a confident smile as he began his countdown. It was kinda insane she'd even asked for this, but there was no chance her bracelet would fail her. Absolute confidence!

"Eep!" Yume squeaked heroically, as she thrust out her hand with the bracelet. At once, the two were blown apart by a powerful explosion of wind, and in the blink of an eye, Yume was standing several feet away. Success!

"Awwh, you held back!" Yume teased, running back up to Luca. "I'm not sure if I'm flattered or disappointed. Maybe I'm relieved, instead: that sword is a little spookier than I expected, ehehe~" she chuckled, scratching the back of her head.

Playfully running up behind Luca and placing her head on his shoulder, Yume poked him a few times. "I wanna see it actually hit something, though. How about that tree?" she pointed ahead in such an unspecific way, it could've referred to any of dozens. "It'll be cathartic for me too. I'll imagine it was the tree that hurt a friend of mine~"

While he was distracted, she stole a quick surprise kiss, before jumping back to give him some room. "Go, my champion!" Yume cheered, raising her fist in the air.

Luca felt something in his stomach as he watched the girl praise him and thank him. He didn’t like it, not at all. The feeling of course. A feeling. He hated when those would come. It felt like butterflies had fluttered in his stomach as he watched his cheeks turn red. He was vulnerable and exposed, he hated that. Then she put her head on his shoulder and it multiplied tenfold. Damn it, this wasn’t what he wanted. He hated not having control over it. How was someone as simple as her controlling him! He’d nod in a daze to her every word as thoughts flowed through his mind. “Yeah, yep.”

Luca felt the kiss on his cheek and his heart stuttered a bit. For a fraction of a second his facade cracked and his eyes glowed with a light and the smile on his face seemed a little more real. He’d stop and assess himself. What was that. That.. feeling. That was a feeling. It was good. He liked it. Is that what she felt? He shook himself out of the daze as he turned to her and pumped his fist in the air “Yeah!” He would do more about it later but for now, he needed to get this done. He aimed his sword at the tree breathing in and out, before running forward and slashing the tree. It seemed almost instantaneous as he blurred, the weapon glowing in the dim light. He’d recoil off the tree and backflip onto the floor. It felt natural and he shook his hand and legs to make sure they were okay. There was a deep cut in the tree, showing a testament to the sharpness of the blade. “I need to get an enchantment on the runes, hopefully a flame one someday, but other than that it really just glows. It’s neat for a sword i found on a temple floor.” Maybe this girl would be more useful to him than he thought. If he could just get control of the situation, he could find out why she was so happy and bubbly, or how she made him feel like that. Or maybe even-

If there was one thing Yume loved, it was a reaction. Something almost explosive! That’s how she’d describe it with Luca: an explosion of red on his face. With so many others, it’d be an eyeroll, or a shrug, or a spear through the gut, but this was simply delightful.

She was gonna have fun with this~

"Wow, yikes. I’m definitely glad you held back," she corrected, staring at the deep cut that could’ve been her body. "If you want an enchantment, that’d be mithril. You mix it up in the chalk and add a bit of the magic you want. Too bad there’s none here, or I could flame up your sword, and you could burn down this forest in exchange. A win-win!"

Daintily stepping forward, Yume ran a finger over the flat edge of the sword, smiling as she inspected it. "I could teach you a bit of enchantment if you want…" she began, before looking up into Luca’s eyes with a teasing grin, "…but I think I already enchanted your cheeks with enough fire for one night~!"

"you really gonna keep doing this?" He said as she listed off the requirements for enchanting before putting the information in the back of his head. She would hit him with a teasing grin and he'd smile at the enchanting pun before getting down low "I can play the same game" he'd put his sword away and step back, finding somewhere on the floor to sit and putting his hand for her to sit next to him "we've barely gotten to know each other!" the slight tint of a blush was still visible on his face.
