Fantasy Farewell to Kings: Elide’s Tale

Leona interjected. “No you are not!” Her tiny voice growing louder. “That’s exactly what the inquisition wants! You would make his sacrifice pointless if you tried that.”

Tess looked over.“I don’t know who she is, but I have to agree. The hive is all pissed off. It’ll be at least a month before we could even attempt to make it inside. I’m sure there will be wanted posters too.”

Her heart froze at the idea that she could be spending a month without him. Hell she hadn't even slept alone in a long ass time. Elide allowed herself to drop to the ground. She laid on the bottom of the shelter she had created. She stared up at the ceiling, not even sure what to do now. Could she just sit here knowing Bart was suffering for her afflictions?

Tess knelt down beside her. “Hey, just so you know, Bart was always kinda like a brother to me. The guild is my family, so that means you’re family too. Winter and the others will definitely want to get him back. You aren’t alone.”

She glanced at her, offering her a weak smile before retreating farther into the shelter. Elide curled up, closing her eyes tightly. She allowed herself to cry herself to sleep.

In her dream, she found herself in a gray abyss with purple light cascading down. Instead of the normal sword spirit, a ghostly image of her father appeared.
“Ah. My child has returned to the abyss.” He snickered. “Are you finally ready to join the perfect silence? It seems like you have few options left.”

She let out a long and dry laugh. "You wish I did. I will get him back. I have love in my heart, unlike you." She spat.

The image of her father shifted back into the sword spirit. “Oh yes, love is special. Bart wasn’t afraid to let loose and create a path of destruction for you. Yet here you are with a demon ready to do the same, and you holding its leash. I say kill these two and let the demon tear the capital city wide open!”

The spirit sighed. “Once again you take the more difficult path. I only hope you aren’t expecting us to save your hide before signing the contract. I’ll be here waiting when you are.”

"Wait... D-Do you think we could just knock them out for a while? Maybe enough time for me to get back there..." She asked

The spirit chuckled and extended an arm with a scroll in it.
“Just sign this and all your troubles will be over.”

"What are you getting out of all of this?" She asked with a frown.

She bit her lip and took the scroll, scanning over the details. "Lots... But I need to know what."

“Whatever you give, I shall take. What I take, gives me strength. Give me everything, and Dominion shall see ruination.”

"Can you promise me something before I sign this?" She asked quietly

"Can you promise me that no one I love will be harmed, and that I will be able to control you when the deed is completed." She murmured quietly

“Well that depends on you, and what you sacrifice. I can guarantee those things if you sacrifice your entire being. I shall carry out your will to the fullest.”

Suddenly, the head of Leona appeared in front of her.
“Are you seriously considering this, after what we just discussed? Your impulsiveness got us here in the first place. Why won’t you let me help you?”
Then Tess appeared as well.
“Same, sister. The last thing Bart wants to see is you missing a limb or two. You can’t trust a demon.”
And finally, Bart who appeared as his entire body.
“I’m going to be okay Liddie. You have to be strong, and use your head. I love you because no matter what, you always stay true to yourself.”

She dropped to her knees and began to cry. "I don't want to let you down." She cried at his feet, knowing it was only an illusion.

The image of Bart approached and hugged her tightly. She could feel his body and his warmth.
“You could never do that. As long as you never give up or forget about me. Be strong, Elide. As strong as you can be. That means trusting your people to be strong as well, and helping when they can’t.”
The images of the others approached her as well. Everyone was hugging Elide.

The sword spirit wanted to gag or cringe at this display of affection.

Bart stroked her hair and stayed that way until Elide‘s eyes started to open upon the forest. Tess was cooking breakfast on an iron pan. There was a man sitting on a log with blue tinted hair and a brown jacket. Eli didn’t remember who it was until she recognized Bart’s bulbous nose sitting on his face. It was his younger brother Winter.

She pushed herself up, wiping away stray tears an empty feeling resting in her chest, the lingering feeling of Bart's arms around her cut deep into her flesh

“You’re up. Feeling better I hope? Some breakfast oughta help.” Tess said. Leona was off somewhere praying to her sun goddess. Winter was quiet but looked Eli’s way. This was the first time Winter had nothing to say. No jerk comment or snide remark. He didn’t seem in the mood.
