Fantasy Farewell to Kings: Elide’s Tale

Elide escaped from the balloon, crumbling to the ground with a sob. Katrina stumbled her way out, letting out a long sigh of relief. She was finally out.

Leona moved beside Eli and gave her a shoulder to cry on. “It’ll be alright. I’m sure any second Bart will come up the hill to join us again, maybe on a stolen carriage. Have faith.”

She shook her head and sobbed, gripping onto Leona, her body shaking slightly. She felt sick and weak, but most importantly, she felt alone.

Leona rubbed her back and emitted healing energy to wash away her sick feeling.
It would be unwise to stay here for very long. Katrina wasted no time in distancing herself from the other two. Evening was approaching, and there was no sign of Bart.

Elide sniffed, her touch helping comfort her. "L-Let's find somewhere to stay for the night." She murmured quietly, pushing herself to her feet, wiping away tears.

Leona looked around and then followed Eli into the woods. They had very little in terms of supplies, only what Eli could bring in a pinch. They had no food or shelter tools.
“That renegade couldn’t wait to abandon us. You’re the only person I can trust, Eli...” saying that out loud saddened Leona, who had abandoned friends and family to become an enemy of the state. The truth had forced her into this world of darkness, and only her faith as a guiding light.

Elide had gathered some supplies, building a small shelter for the two of them. She prepared a small fire before ducking beneath the shelter's protective roof. She called upon her powers, trying to reach out to Bart once again.

He was alive, but also very far away. His essence was fleeting, like he had been gravely wounded in battle and then healed of those wounds.

——————
“is this the one from the other night?” Lady Jane asked.
“Yes, the one who killed your assassin. I recognize the tattoo” Her lackey spoke attentively.
“Very good. Make sure he stays alive.” She said and walked away.

Inside a moist dungeon cell was an unconscious Bart chained to the wall. The magic lights followed the inquisitors, and black shadows fell over him.

Bart? Bart... Can you hear me? Elide felt relieved, knowing he was alive

“He’s sleeping. All tuckered out from his big battle, he he he.” An older lady’s voice spoke instead of Bart. It could only be the other person with Eli’s powers.

“It’s a shame I couldn’t have tea with you again. Was the big city too much for a little girl?”

A feeling of disgust and hatred overcame her. "Leave him alone you bitch." Anger fueling every word

“I would, but only if you take his place in my dungeon. Did you think there’d be no consequences for a kingslayer, bratty child? Your Bart understands why he’s here. Don’t worry, you’ll join him soon enough. A summary execution is in order.”

Leona looked up and saw Eli inside her own head with tears hitting her clenched fists.
“Eli?.... Eli snap out of it!” She slapped Elide across the face.

Pain rippled across her face as the slap was delivered. She shook her head, regaining herself. "Sorry... I tried to reach him... She's in my head." She said quietly with a gulp.

“So stop trying to reach him. The fabric is connecting you to him, but she’s close enough to hijack it.” Leona huffed. She had learned a lot about how the aether functioned.
“We won’t be safe as long as you’re tied to him. I suggest you cut the connection, else she’ll start tracking us.”

"I-I don't know if I can... It's all I have left of him." She murmured quietly, anxiously running a hand through her white hair.

“We can’t help it. All that will do is get us caught quicker. Bart would have probably wanted us to get far away from Dominion. What was that place he said was helping you guys, the Wolf club?”

She released a sigh, knowing she was right. Elide broke the connection, feeling like a part of her died. "Y-Yes... Wolfhead Guild." She said quietly

“Well, maybe if we find a guild member they can help us find somewhere to hide.”

No sooner did she say this, that a rustling in the bushes revealed a woman with red hair and a feathered cap.

“Did somebody say Wolfhead” Tess asked with her silky voice. She was dressed in a strange robe made of canvas and leaves.

"Tess!" Elide exclaimed, throwing her arms around the woman, embracing her tightly, tears falling from her face once again.

“Oof, hey!” Tess embraced her friend. “It’s been awhile. Still making friends I see?” She looked at Leona and patted Eli on the back.
“Seeing the chaos around Dominion I guessed your mission was a success?”

Tess’ eyes widened and she held Eli tighter.

“She killed the high priest.” Leona said. “Then we managed to escape the city. Bart stayed behind so we weren’t followed. He sacrificed himself for us.”

“That idiot... that...” now Tess was crying too. Even Leona started getting teary eyed thinking about how he acted so heroically to save them from capture.

Elide crumbled to the ground, holding Tess close. "He-He's still alive... I-I think," she sobbed

Tess sobbed and then took in a big breath.
“Of course he is. That big doofus can’t die like some prisoner. Just-just try to think positive about it, okay?”

She sniffed, wiping her eyes, the tears not wanting to stop. "I-I'm going to get him back... It's me they want."
