As she went further into to detail about why she stopped him from killing Braden he looked up. His eyes were starting to puff up, trying to hold back his tears. It broke his heart to see her so downtrodden and to know that he was the cause of the majority of it. She was his little sister and causing her pain wasn't something he was supposed to do - wasn't something he meant to do. "I don't understand," he started, voice cracking. "How you can protect someone who nearly killed you." Alex hadn't spoken about that night at the Mercury and for reason. He was there when Harper had woken up in the back of that ambulance. He was the one who'd taken her out of the building. And it hurt him thinking about it. "Do you know how hard that night was? To see you fighting for your life while there wasn't a damn thing I could do?" He paused, turning his attention to Billy. "Or how hard it was knowing that while I was on a date you were at risk of losing your life? I'd risk whatever I need to to make sure that doesn't happen."
Alex loved Callum more than words could express. The things he would do and hoops he'd jump through for him were endless. The same went for Spencer and Billy and Harper. If he had to kill for his son or his immediate family then he would; no one would hurt his family and get away with it. He understood what Harper was saying, the consequences of him killing his son's uncle. It would affect him and perhaps his relationship with Callum. But, that was if he told him. And when it came to his conscience and having to look into Callum's eyes knowing that he had, he was sure he'd be able to get over it. He continued to listen, watching as Harper continued her ranting and for a moment he thought his anger subsided. The more she spoke the more he understood her reasonings and her side of things. But the moment she stated he called her a slut her frowned and sat up in his seat. "Hey! I never slut shamed you for that," he pointedly said. "I'm not a fucking hypocrite; I don't care what you do and who you do it with. That dig at Jeremy had nothing to do with you." He then realized that making such a jab at the man made her feel like some whore, which was never his intention.
"Okay, look," he stood up, starting to grow frustrated with her yelling. "I shouldn't have said what I said and outed your relationship with Jeremy and for that I'm sorry," he said genuinely, "But that had nothing to do with you and everything to do with him." Though he tried to keep his tone neutral that internal anger he felt at himself and her for berating and yelling at him was bubbling up. It wasn't until she brought up Laura and rejected his words that he finally had enough. He snapped. "You don't think any of us feel fucking trapped?! Like the weight of what happened to mom isn't as suffocating?!" Alex had never realized nor admitted how Laura's death had affected him in the long run. How making a promise to protect his sister had led him to make stupid and rash decisions, leading to Harper feeling suffocated herself. "I'm so sorry that everything we did. Every measure we took to protect you was so awful, Harper," he said, pressing his hand against his chest. "I really, truly am." His voice, though angry, was genuinely sincere. "So what do you want from us, huh? You want us to back off? Done. You want us to stop butting into your life? Done." Hot tears started falling down his cheeks, unable to keep them at bay.
Alex stormed over to her, gently placing his hands on her cheeks. His eyes had gone puffy, and red - the tears not stopping. "But remember this. We do care about you, Harper. More than you could ever possibly understand. More than you could ever accept. You're a pathetic mess? I'M a pathetic mess. And just like Trevor, I made a mess. But you- you are nothing Laura and if you are that's the bright part of who she was." He fell silent, searching her eyes for any sign that she understood and believed him. Spencer spoke up once more and Alex dropped his hands - moving back away from her. His eyes hit the floor listening as the man suggested they came back later to their conversation when they'd all had a chance to calm down. Alex wasn't sure, at that moment, how much good that would do but he was willing to try. He was willing to do anything he could or needed to in order to fix what he felt he had gone and fucked up. When his older brother was done talking, he sniffled and nodded his head, but said nothing more. What more was there to say?
