With every ambulance that Bruce had to let past him, his heart sunk a little further. Who was it for this time? Who was it carrying? He had just got off the phone with one of their overseas suppliers, securing their next shipment of cocaine, and was about ready to join Spencer’s birthday party at the Mercury nightclub when the phone had rung again. Knowing that Shona was in labour, he expected it to be the news that his grandnephew or grandniece had been born. But it was nothing so positive. Ever since he had thrown the receiver down, each minute that went by felt like an hour - he couldn’t run to his car fast enough, every road seemed busier than usual and the rising black smoke that billowed into the distant sky was taunting him.
After weaving between the cavalry of ambulances, Bruce finally parked up and ran over to the mass of people being treated around the back of the nightclub. “Darcey?” he yelled above the chaos, his head turning to scan the area. “Harper, Billy, Alex, where are ya’?!”
With the number of ambulances arriving and leaving, he figured the crowd must have thinned a bit by now. He hoped so, anyway, otherwise it would seem that not many had managed to escape the club in time. In such a rush to leave the house, Bruce had forgotten to bring his glasses and combined with the smoke that polluted the surrounding air, he was struggling to identify the people around him. He thought he saw Spencer in the distance, but since he knew his nephew should be at the hospital with Shona, he dismissed his faulty vision and continued searching for the others. Eventually he got closer and saw that it was indeed his nephew, and the woman with her hands on his shoulder was Darcey.
“Oh my god,” Bruce blurted out, bounding over to the pair. Straight away he swept Spencer into a tight embrace, reaching up behind him to hold his head steady as he kissed him firmly on the temple. “My boy,” he said, his voice cracking, before turning to Darcey. His arm coiled around her shoulders and he kissed her on the cheek. “Are you two alright? You ain’t waitin’ for an ambulance?” Bruce could feel a familiar pain swarm through his chest as the thought of losing his family stirred up painful memories of his late wife and children. “I’m parked up just over there, I’ll drive ya’ both to the hospital -” At the idea of leaving, Bruce looked over Darcey’s shoulder at the crowd before facing Spencer again. “Where are the others? Harper, Billy, Alex - where are they? Did they get out? Where are they?”
